Alitha M. Pollman, age 92, of Menno, SD passed away at the Dow-Rummel Village, Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Grace Lutheran Church, Menno, SD with Rev. Theresa Jacobson officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery, Menno, SD. Visitations will be 5 to 8 PM, Tuesday, at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Menno, with a Scripture service at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Alitha was born on January 21, 1921 in Wittenberg Township, Hutchinson County, South Dakota to Walter and Louise (Huber) Knittel. She attended Roosevelt District 36 grade school and graduated from Menno High School in 1938.

During summer months, she did housekeeping for several families and then worked at the local Gamble's Store for John Hellwig. After the sale of the Gamble's Store, she worked for Russell Parks Drug Store. On October 4, 1940, she married Jacob S. Pollman with whom she had four children.

In 1943, she joined her husband who had been drafted into the US Army and was stationed in Amarillo, Texas. After her husband was sent overseas, she and daughter, Lonna returned to Menno. She then worked at the Menno Bakery for Reiny Frasch and later for LuVern Mettler. She also did rug weaving at home. She was then asked to work as a cook at the Mobil Gas Cafe owned by Duane Bartling and later Oscar Pfiefle. During this time, she also began work at the Menno Livestock office on sale days. In April of 1966, she was hired at the Menno Farmers Union Coop as Assistant Bookkeeper and remained there until 2000 when she began part time work at Country Pride until her retirement.

Alitha was a grateful member of AL-ANON for some 35 years. She held offices at Menno Grace Lutheran Church where she was baptized and confirmed and was a life time member. She also served as church secretary for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Louise (Huber) Knittel, her infant daughter, Lonnie Gay, husband, Jacob Pollman, and sisters, Janice Buehner and Wilma Liebel.

She is survived by her daughters, Lonna (Frank) Drew, and Glenda (Eddie) Laugle, and son, Dell (Deb) Pollman; grandchildren: Darin Guthmiller, Jeniffer (Loren) Schultz, Josh (Jennifer) Pollman, and Jay (Lisa) Pollman; six step grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and seven step great grandchildren.

Robert W. "Bob" Record, age 88, of Menno, SD passed away Wednesday, January 02, 2013 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno, SD. Memorial services will be 4:00 PM, Sunday, January 6, 2013 at the Salem Reformed Church, Menno, with Rev. Michael Hecht officiating. Burial of Robert's cremated remains will be at a later date at the Galveston Cemetery, Galveston, IN. The Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Menno, SD is assisting with the services.

Robert Wayne Record was born March 9, 1924 to Carl and Edna (Ellis) Record at Kokomo, Indiana. Robert was drafted into the United States Army at the age of 20, and served in the Philippines from January 1945-November 1946. After his return, he worked for Haynes International, Inc. in Kokomo, Indiana for 30 years. He was also engaged in custom farming with his brothers. He married Daisy Hicks in 1948. She passed away in 1978.

On October 22, 1988, he married Ruth Seidel in Menno where they made their home. Bob & Ruth enjoyed many winters together in Apache Junction, Arizona.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Menno; step-son Lee (Gloria) Seidel, Eau Claire, WI; 7 step-grandchildren and their families : Michelle Herman, Birmingham, AL; Mark (Lisa) Seidel, Eleanor and Nolan, Madison, WI; Lisa (Larry) Klaudt, Logan, Menno, SD; Amy Seidel (Jeff Miller), Anja and Soren, Iowa City, IA; Kristi (Jason) Sayler, Jenna and Morgan, Sioux Falls, SD; Travis (Linda) Herman, Nicholas and Jack, Mitchellville, IA; Janae Herman, Rapid City, SD. 2 brothers: Pat (Linda) Record, Kokomo, IN and Red (Gracie) Record, Logansport, IN and sister-in-law, Bernice Record, Logansport, IN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Daisy, two infant children, two brothers, a sister and a sister-in-law, step-daughter Delileah and her husband Gary Herman.

Helen Ripple, age 92 of Yankton passed away Friday, December 7, 2012 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Lesterville with Rev. Joe Forcelle officiating. Burial will be in the Polish Cemetery, rural Lesterville. Visitations will begin at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:30 PM followed by a Scripture service at 8:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are: David Walloch, Kenny Sayler, Joe Walloch, Steve Fryda, Jared Stark and Aaron Pietz.

Helen was born on August 27, 1920 in Yankton County to William and Mary (Nedved) Pishek. She attended Country School near Tabor and graduated from Tabor High School in 1939. After high school, she cleaned and did housework for many people in the surrounding area then in 1949, she went to work at the Pioneer Bakery in Yankton. On February 16, 1949, she was united in marriage to Edwin Ripple at the Congregational Church in Yankton. Helen and Edwin farmed for many years in Yankton County until they both retired. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Lesterville, SD. Helen loved traveling, gardening, tending to her flower gardens, but especially enjoyed playing the accordion. Helen and Edwin did not have children but enjoyed always meeting friendly people and smiling faces.

Helen is survived by two nieces, Gladys McCoy of Clermont, FL and Ruth (Paul) Ehmcke of Woodbury, MN; a nephew, Richard Hubacek of Sandy, OR; six great nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Frances R. Rokusek, age 94, of Tabor, SD passed away early Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Avera St. Michael's Nursing Home, Tyndall, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Monday, January 28, 2013 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, with Rev. Joe Forcelle celebrating and Msgr. Carlton Hermann con-celebrating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Tabor, with a wake service at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Frances was born March 7, 1917 in Brainard, NE to John and Frances (Novak) Fiala, and was one of three children. Frances graduated from Crete High School and married James Rokusek on March 25, 1940 in Oakes, ND. James was her lifelong soul partner whom she cherished forever. Frances and Jim spent 47 summers at Okobogi selling Sno Kones and Carmel Corn. The winter months were spent in Tabor at the Wonder Shop. She was a member of the Tabor Chamber of Commerce, Czech Heritage Society, Catholic Sokol Social Club, Tabor Senior Citizens Center, and a lifelong member of St. Wenceslaus Parish and Altar Society. She was a member of the Kortan-Hatwan American Legion Auxiliary of which she held many different offices and was especially honored to be Chaplain.

She is survived by her son, Tom (Norma) Rokusek of George, IA; daughter, Kay (Dave) Kline of Mitchell, SD; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James, parents, sister, Alice (Fiala) Rokusek and brother, John Fiala.

Blaine D. "Bud" Sagmoe, age 71 of Yankton, SD passed away Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. He battled with brain cancer for 21 1/2 months. Funeral services will be 1:30 pm, Monday, February 25, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton, SD with Rev. Dave Wildermuth officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Sunday, February 24, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are John Sagmoe, Benjamin Sagmoe, Brett Marlette, Mark Clayton, Jim Zoeller, and Brian Fedde. Honorary Pallbearers are Clarence Hauger, Cy Groetken, Charles Bender, and Boyd Jones, his nieces and nephews, Terri Lynn LaFargue, Terri Lee Licktieg, Paul Berg, Kristin Meyer, Steven Meyer, and Molly Scherff.

Blaine was born September 22, 1941, in Dell Rapids, SD, to Phillip and Anna (Sward) Sagmoe. He was baptized and confirmed at Dell Rapids Lutheran Church and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1964. He graduated at Dell Rapids High School and took one semester at SDSU. He married Judy Leuning on April 13, 1963 at Dell Rapids Lutheran Church. Blaine was a member of Sportsman Club in Dell Rapids and Sertoma Club in earlier years in Yankton. He worked at the Lumber Yard in Dell Rapids, then at Hanson Glass and Paint in Sioux Falls, SD. He then moved to Yankton in July of 1964 after purchasing the Fejfar Paint Store, which became Yankton Glass & Paint and then the name changed to Yankton Paint and Decorating, which he owned and operated for 42 years, until his retirement on January 1, 2007. He made the most of these years enjoying his hobbies: Hunting, fishing, traveling, boating on Lewis and Clark Lake, and golfing with his family and friends. He took a special joy when his daughters and their families would visit and enjoyed using "grandpa's toys".

He is survived by his wife, Judy Kay; daughters, Sonya (Chris) Nielson from Grand Forks, ND and Linda (Carey) Sagmoe-Peterson; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers, John (Verna) Sagmoe of Dixon, IL, and Don (Marsha) Sagmoe of Dell Rapids, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Bernt & Dorothea Sagmoe, and John & Amelia Sward.

Earl Milford Saugstad, age 92 died Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, SD with Rev. Dave Lund officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories, Yankton, SD with Military Graveside Rites by Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post 791, Yankton, SD and SDARNG Honor Guard of Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation will begin at 6:00 PM, Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Opsahl Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory with a Masonic service at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Loy Gravholt, David Thompson, Gordon Thompson, Jim Flynn, Don List and Marlys List.

Earl was born August 15, 1920 at Volin, SD to Oliver N. and Ida (Lee) Saugstad. He was baptized and confirmed at Trondhjem Lutheran Church, Volin, SD. He attended West Prairie and Lindbergh Grade Schools and graduating in 1939 from Irene High School. He worked for Bank of America, in Madera, CA for 2 years as a bookkeeper and teller. On January 22, 1941, he married Elizabeth (Bette) McManus at Ireton, IA. On June 20, 1943, twin sons, Errol and Garell were born. In July 1943, he went to work for the Freeman Company in Yankton, SD as a machinist and plant manager for 46 years, retiring in March 1989. He served in the United States Army during World War II from June 30, 1944 to January 3, 1946, his rank was Technician Fourth Grade.

He was a member of St. John's Masonic Lodge #1 A.F. and A.M. a 32nd degree of Scottish Rite Consistary, El Riad Shrine, Royal Arch Mason, Night Templar, and Lewis & Clark Shrine Club. He was a life member of Moose Lodge #1356, B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 994, member of Roy Anderson American Legion Post #12 and life member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He was survived by six grandchildren: Laura (Bill) Stubbs of Olathe, KS, Katie (Eric) Neuman of Denver, CO, Lisa (Gary) Jeffries of Pittsburg, PA, Tim Saugstad of Denver, CO, Jennifer Larsen (Ken Kinzler) of Chicago, IL and Greg (Tammy) Larsen of Tacoma, WA; six great grandchildren, Austin and Ben Stubbs of Olathe, KS, Theo and Sullivan of Denver, CO, Cortney Jeffries of Pittsburg, PA, and Lily Larsen of Chicago, IL; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friend, Phyllis Erickson of Yankton, SD.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth and sons, Errol and Garell, sisters: Myrtle Knox, Alice Thompson, Gladys Thompson, Inez Gravholt, Fern Larson and Esther Flynn.

Terrell Curtis "Terry" Schanche, age 82, of Yankton, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2012 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, August 23, 2012 at the United Church of Christ (Congregational), Yankton, SD with Rev. Paul Opsahl officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Wednesday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton with a prayer servce at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Dave Schanche, Dale Schanche, Harold Cook, Tim Schaeffer, Kenny Schanche and Delmar Nelson. Honorary Pallbearers will be John Kenna, Cori Stahlecker, Vincent Kenna, Cara Stahlecker, Martin Kenna and Devin Stahlecker.

Terrell (Terry) was born to Clarence and Twila Schanche on August 23rd, 1929 in Lesterville, South Dakota. Terry was raised on the family farm in rural Lesterville. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Menno. Terry attended school in Lesterville and also worked on the family farm. In 1951, Terry married Jacqueline Albert. To this union they had 4 daughters, Pam, Charlotte, Terri and Kristi. Terry continued to work on the farm during this time.

In 1958, Terry drove truck for Chauncy Brewer & Son. In 1962 Terry and his family moved to Oregon. Terry worked for Ralston Purina Company for 11 years.

In 1971, Terry married Ruth Mueller. Terry and Ruth spent a few years in Oregon until returning to Yankton, South Dakota in 1973. Terry worked at Ford Garage, Cimpl Meat Packing Company, Agland Fertilizer and Wal-Mart until his retirement.

Terry and Ruth enjoyed hosting family and friends at the Schanche "Funhouse." Terry enjoyed polka music, tending his garden, tinkering in the garage and collecting his model tractors. Grandpa Terry also enjoyed putting together puzzles and watching his westerns and 3 Stooges.

Terry was also a member of the Tri-State Old Iron Association. Terry was a warm, fun loving, easy going father, step-father, grandfather and husband. We love you Terry! We will miss you dearly.

Terry is survived by his daughter's Pam (Harold) Cook, Terri (Earl) Bell; stepdaughters Connie Kenna and Susan Stahlecker ; his 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; his sister's Adelle Nelson, Sharon (Bob) Nagel; his brother's C.A.(Ruth) Schanche and Delmar Schanche; sister's in law Edna Fargo and Mary Schanche.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ruth; his daughter's Charlotte and Kristi; grandchildren Tony and Andy; his brother's Cletus and Donald; one son in law and numerous sister in laws and brother in laws.

Melvin L. Schmidt, age 87, of Yankton, SD passed away early Sunday, December 02, 2012 at the Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Holy Family Parish, St. Helena, NE, with Rev. Eric Olson officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by the Wynot American Legion Post #31. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a Wake service at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Scott Schmidt, Greg Schmidt, Lyle Schulte, Lary Schulte, Mike Steinberg, and Marty Steinberg.

Melvin was born at home on December 5, 1924 to Henry T. and Agnes C. (Betz) Schmidt. He attended Immaculate Conception School in St. Helena, NE. He served his country as a Navy Seaman 1st Class as a cook on the destroyer ship USS Waldron during WWII from February 23, 1945 to July 6, 1946 when he was honorably discharged. After returning home from the service he drove the road maintainer for Cedar County, NE and farmed on the family homestead for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791, Yankton, and the Wynot American Legion Post #31, Wynot, NE.

He was well known for his delicious homemade chicken noodle soup. He enjoyed playing Bingo, hunting, fishing, and playing cards with his family and friends. After retirement he enjoyed meeting friends at Hy-Vee for coffee. He was a jolly, kind, gentle soul, was greatly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Melvin is survived by his sister Janeane Steinberg of Yankton, SD, sister-in-law Analyn Schmidt of Yankton, SD and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister Mary, brothers: Kenneth, Leroy, and Laverl "Babe", a sister Kleone "Dodie" Schulte, sister-in-law Shirley Schmidt, brothers-in-law, Richard "Harry" Schulte and John P. "Jack" Steinberg, nephew Charles Schmidt, great nieces Allison and Marie Schulte and her baby Caisee Vennard.
