TYNDALL -- Gregory "Greg" Hoch, 57, Tyndall, died Monday, January 10, 2005, at St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall.
Visitation is from 1:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel, Tyndall, South Dakota.

Wake service is 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Tyndall, South Dakota.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 13, 2005, at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Tyndall, South Dakota, with the Rev. Fr. Gerald Thury officiating.

Honorary Casketbearers are Hayes Balvin, Billy Balvin, Charlie Campbell, Jim Guy, Irene Herman, Betty Ranek, Laurie Bass and Barbara Weber.

Casketbearers are Jim Koenig, Gary LaCompte, Laddie Schuh, Rodney Skorpik, Ron Wagner and Dr. Scott Weber.

Interment is in St. Leo's Catholic Cemetery, Tyndall, South Dakota.

Gregory James Hoch was born on February 7, 1947, in Brookings, South Dakota to William and Vera (Balvin) Hoch. Greg was captain of the varsity football and basketball teams at Tyndall High School and graduated as Salutatorian in 1965. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from South Dakota State University with a degree in Pharmacy in 1970. After earning his degree, Greg returned to Tyndall to work in the family drugstore.

Greg loved adventure and travel and his journeys took him to Africa, India, China, Peru and Alaska. One of his most memorable trips was mountain climbing in the Himalayas.

Greg cared deeply about his profession and the people of Tyndall. He spent long hours working in the drugstore and studying pharmaceutical journals.

Greg's memory will be cherished by his parents, Bill and Vera Hoch of Tyndall and his sister, Jeanne Hoch of Berea, Kentucky.

Carli Eckert

WAKONDA -- Carli McKenna Eckert, 4, of Wakonda, SD, died as a result of a house fire, Friday, January 7, 2005.
She was involved in tap and ballet dance class. She loved to play dress up. She was our little princess. Carli loved to spend time playing with her brothers and sister. All of the kids loved spending time with their family at the river or wherever they may have been.

Survivors include parents, Brian & Rhonda, Wakonda; grandparents: Bob & Lois Anderson, Volin, SD; LeRoy & Grace Eckert, Bath, PA; great-grandmothers: Marie Wiberg, Alcester, & Minnie Anderson, Volin; aunts & uncles: Terry & Annie Anderson, Sturgis, SD; Shawn & Jennifer Anderson, Gayville, SD; Darcy & Dennis Nagel, Rapid City, SD; Eileen & Robbie Taylor, Bath, PA; cousins: Jacob, Zachary, Dagny, Zane, Chance, Scout, Ashley, Lindsay; also numerous great aunts and uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at the Wakonda High School Gymnasium. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the services on Tuesday. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery rural Wakonda.

Hansen Funeral Home, Irene, is in charge of arrangements.

Louise Wilken

BLOOMFIELD, Neb. -- Louise L. Wilken, age 84, of Bloomfield, Nebraska, died Friday (Jan. 21, 2005) at Sunset View Assisted Living in Bloomfield, Nebraska.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Bloomfield, Nebraska, with Pastor Tom Miller officiating. Music will be provided by organist Joan Hoppe and vocalists: Rod Eisenhaur, Michelle, Alyssa and Amanda Sage. Interment is in the Bloomfield Cemetery, Bloomfield, Nebraska.

Pallbearers are Kelly Wilken, Mallorie Wilken, Heide Wilken, Bradley Wilken, Joel Goetsch, Steven Black and Darren Garrean.

Honorary pallbearers are grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brockhaus-Scott Funeral Home, Bloomfield, Nebraska.

Louise was the youngest of 11 children born to John and Dora (Koertje) Ermels May 8, 1920, on a farm eight and one half miles north of Bloomfield, NE. She was baptized June 20, 1920, and confirmed April 14, 1935, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Bloomfield.

She attended East Star Rural School through the eighth grade. Her formal education ended after the eighth grade, allowing her to care for her parents. She still found time for her love of music by playing piano and accordion for church functions, barn dances and social activities with her brothers: Albert and Joe.

On March 3, 1940, Louise was united in marriage to Raymond Wilken at St. Mark's Lutheran Church by Pastor H. O. Rhode. After their marriage they moved to a farm six miles southwest of Crofton, NE where they lived for 40 years. Seven children were born to this union: Arlyce, Kathleen, Dennis, Duane, Dean, Dianne and Craig. In 1980, Ray and Louise retired from farming and moved to Bloomfield where they bought a home.

Being and active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Louise took part in activities where she taught Sunday school, served on Church Council, and was active in WELCA. She sang for funerals, directed choirs, and was instrumental in quilting and Bible Study Groups. Besides being a very active farmer's wife and mother, she was a member of an Extension Club, the Bloomfield Women's Club and various card clubs and community choirs.

As a 4-H leader for 17 years, she shared her love of sewing, decorating, singing, cooking, and baking with many young women along with her daughters. Her expertise in sewing included wedding dresses, men's suits, coats, drapes, upholstering furniture, and alterations. She also found time to board hunters from various states during pheasant season. In later years, she volunteered at the Good Samaritan Center sharing her many talents. Another of her favorite talents was sewing quilts and knitting afghans for her children and grand children.

Extended family was very important to her and she promoted and encouraged attendance at family reunions. She and Raymond took many trips to see family in Colorado, Canada, Iowa, Montana and California. They also traveled for leisure to Branson, Las Vegas, Germany, Washington D.C. and New York. After her husband's death, Louise's travels included the Holy Land, Florida and Wisconsin. On November 8, 2004, Louise moved into the Sunset View Assisted Living.

She is survived by children and their spouses: Arlyce and Jerry Black of Littleton, CO, Kathleen and Mike Garrean of Omaha, NE, Duane Wilken of Bloomfield, Dean and Sandy Wilken of Bloomfield, Dianne Goetsch of Fond du Lac, WI, Craig and Rita Wilken of Crofton; one brother, Edwin Ermels of Bloomfield; 23 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in May of 1993; son, Dennis; five brothers; and 4 sisters.

Gerald DeJong

Committal services for Gerald DeJong, 63, formerly of Springfield, will be 3:30 p.m. Friday, November 26, 2004, at the Emanuel Cemetery, rural Springfield, with military honors.

Gerald DeJong, son of William and Fannie DeJong, was born July 22, 1941. He died November 22, 2004, at Fitzgibben Hospital in Marshall, MO. Gerald attained the age of 63 years and four months.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy (Snyder) DeJong of Slater, MO; son, Bruce and granddaughter, Danielle, both of Denver, CO; four brothers: Willis and wife, Marjorie of Avon; Eldon and wife, Alberta of Springfield; Merrill and wife, Vonnie of Darien, WI; and Ray of Denver, CO; one sister, Irene Oliver and husband, Lloyd of Corsica; sister-in-law, Lorraine DeJong of Springfield; and many other relatives.

Gerald was preceded in death by a son, Russell; and three brothers: George, Wayne and an infant brother, LeRoy.

Cleo Kosters

BURBANK -- Cleo Jean Kosters, 74, of Burbank, SD, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2005) at Sister James Care Center, Yankton.
Cleo was born Oct. 27, 1930, at Rock Valley, Iowa, to Alden Eggleston and Della Nelson. She graduated from Rock Valley (Iowa) High School in 1948, attended Westmar College, LeMars, Iowa; Northwestern, Orange City, Iowa; and received a PHD from USD in library science. She was an elementary school teacher and was librarian for Rock Valley schools. She was president of the Vermillion Civic Council, charter member of the Vermillion Red Classic Chicks, VFW Auxiliary, ESA, and Historical Society.

She was a member of United Methodist Church, Vermillion.

She married William Kosters Feb. 18, 1951, in Rock Valley. He died April 7, 1977. She had lived in Vermillion since 1970.

Survivors include her brother, Rollin Eggleston of Glen Carbon, Ill.; a sister: Christine DiPirro of Orchard Park, N.Y.; nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law: Sara Eggleston, Charlotte, N.C.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at United Methodist Church, Vermillion. Burial is in Rock Valley Cemetery, Rock Valley, Iowa.

Visitation is from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion. Visitation is also from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at Pioneer Methodist Church in Rock Valley, Iowa, with a prayer service at 3 p.m.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother Nelson.

Michael Hansen

LEHI, Utah -- Michael Alan Hansen, 34, Lehi, Utah, died Jan. 18, 2005, from injuries sustained in an airplane crash.
Memorial services were Jan. 22, 2005, in the Wing Mortuary Chapel, Lehi, Utah.

Michael was born May 14, 1970, in Yankton, S.D. He attended Wynot Public Schools, Wynot, graduating from high school in 1988. He enlisted in the Army National Guard while still in high school and during his service, rose to the rank of E-4 Specialist. Upon completion of basic training, Michael attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, majoring in business management.

After college, Michael started a career in golf course maintenance, working as superintendent at Knolls Country Club, Himark Country Club and Yankee Hills Country Club, all in Lincoln.

He married Sandi Renee Hanson, Aug. 17, 1996, in Pierre, S.D., and March 25, 2001, their son, Alex Michael, was born. A baby daughter is expected in April.

Michael Hansen was co-founder and CEO of Golf Resource Group, Inc., and was a specialist in analyzing and developing solutions for complex agronomic conditions. Before co-founding Golf Resource Group, Michael was Vice President of Golf Operations for Bratt Inc., a nationally renowned landscape construction company. During his tenure at Bratt, Michael completed multiple renovation projects and agronomic consulting throughout the state of Utah including the construction and grow-in of Saratoga Springs Golf Course, an 18-hole golf course in Saratoga Spring, Utah. He maintained a Class-A status with the Golf Course Superintendents Association and has been a member for 10 years.

Michael loved all sports. He was a standout athlete in high school, lettering in all sports offered. He had just learned to snowboard and had taught his three-year-old son to ski and snowboard. He was also an avid runner and completed the Honolulu marathon in December.

Michael is survived by his wife, Sandi; son, Alex; parents, Denise and Eddie Stratman, Wynot; Gene and Marilyn Hansen, Sioux City, Iowa; his sister, Terri Jo Dawson and her husband, Dexter Dawson, Omaha; two nieces, Emily and Megan; one nephew, Jayden; three stepbrothers: Randy, Gary and Mark and Judy Stratman, a stepsister, Karen and Jay Heimes, all of Wynot; and a number of family members and many close friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

A memorial service will be held, Jan. 29, 2 p.m., at the Himark Golf Course, 8901 Augusta Dr., Lincoln.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made at Wells Fargo Bank on behalf of the Michael A. Hansen family.

Martha Binder

Martha Binder, age 108, of Yankton and formerly of Tabor, passed away Monday, January 17, 2005, at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton where she had been residing since 1995.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 20, 2005, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor, SD with Rev. Joe Puthenkulathil and Msgr. Carlton Hermann officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitations will from 3-9 p.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton with a 7:00 p.m. rosary and 7:30 p.m. Scripture service. Visitations will resume at 9:00 a.m. and continue until the time of service at the Kostel Funeral Home, Tabor.

Pallbearers are John Binder, Tim Binder, Joe Gratzfeld Jr., David Gratzfeld, Bob Ryken and Greg Ryken.

Martha, whose life spanned three centuries, was born on July 29, 1896, in Tabor, SD to John and Rose (Honner) Wagner. She married Charles Binder on November 21, 1916, at Tabor, SD. After their marriage, they homesteaded to Montana for a few years and then moved back to Tabor. They farmed in the Tabor, Tripp, and Scotland area until they retired to Tabor in 1951. After moving to Tabor, she worked for Mr. And Mrs. Laddie Kostel Sr. for many years as well as cleaning and cooking at the rectory at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Together they raised a family of 11 children, eight of whom are still living.

Martha was a very loving mother and homemaker. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, an honorary member of the Altar Rosary Society, and a 47-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She joined the Century Club in 1996. She had the honor of becoming the oldest living person in South Dakota, which made her the Centenarian of the Year for 2003. Martha also participated in The Genetics of Longevity, New England Centenarian Study through the Boston Medical Center.

She kept very busy with gardening, canning, baking kolaches, rye bread, apple pies and many other goodies. She also enjoyed doing quilting and patching. Her favorite pastime was having all the family together sharing a meal and caring for all the little grandchildren and many other children in the Tabor area.

Martha is a survivor of the Great Depression. She never learned to drive a car, but she could plow with horses with her Dad. Martha was the last of the Wagner family, which included 6 brothers and 4 sisters.

Grateful for having shared her life are four daughters: Lydia (Virgil) Willman, Yankton, SD; Phyll (George) Pfeiffer, Aberdeen, SD; Sylvia (Joe) Gratzfeld, Yankton, SD; and Sophia (Ronald) Ryken, Irene, SD; four sons: Albert (Elvira) Binder, Yankton, SD; Paul (Marjean) Binder, Tripp, SD; Raymond Binder, Corson, SD and Donald (Cleo) Binder, Highmore, SD; 21 grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 16 step-great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren, 5 step-great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. We will always love and miss her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sons, three grandsons, one great-grandson, one great-granddaughter, one step-great-great-granddaughter, four sisters (two in infancy), six brothers (one in infancy) and two daughters-in-law.

Delores Kool

Delores A. Kool, age 87, of Yankton passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 24, 2005, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton with Rev. Ken Bain officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitations will be from 4-9 p.m. Sunday, January 23, 2005, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton with a 7:00 p.m. rosary and 7:30 p.m. Scripture service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers are her grandsons: Todd Kool, Brad Kool, Rob Kool, Mike Kool, Troy Jordahl, Kevin Jordahl and Tim Schieffer.

Honorary pallbearers are her grandsons: Paul Kool, Brian Kool and Brent Kool.

Delores was born on August 8, 1917, to Bernard and Caroline (Bruening) Hegge in Constance, Nebraska. She was united in marriage to Richard L. Kool on July 18, 1941, and to this union five children were born. After raising her family, she worked at the Crofton Public Schools, Headstart, and Cottonwood Villa in Crofton, NE and Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.

She was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Christian Mothers and the Senior Citizens Center in Yankton, SD. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was very outgoing and had many friends. Her favorite pastimes were spending time with her family and friends, playing cards and bingo.

Her memory will be cherished by her three sons: Richard E. (Bonnie) Kool of Grand Island, NE, Robert (Dodie) Kool of Gayville, SD and Randall (Lynn) Kool of Fountain, CO; two daughters: Corriene (Ellef) Jordahl of Yankton, SD and Linda (Harley) Schieffer of Clarinda, IA; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

Hildegarde M. Bruening

HARTINGTON, Neb. -- Hildegarde M. Bruening, age 91, of Hartington, Nebraska, died Tuesday, February 01, 2005, at the Stanton Health Center in Stanton, Nebraska.
Funeral Services will be on Friday, February 4, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington, Nebraska with the Rev. John Pietramale and Monsignor Cyril Werner officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's cemetery in Hartington, Nebraska.

Visitation will be on Thursday, February 3rd from 1:00-8:00 p.m. with a 2:00 p.m. rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Vigil Service at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.

Pallbearers will be Shannon Bruening-Hughes, Matthew Petta, David Petta, Katrina Bruening, Elizabeth Bruening, Nichole Petta, Darrell Peitz, Jim Peitz and Bill Yates.

Hildegarde was born January 14, 1914, at Hartington to Theodore and Christine (Eskins) Peitz. She grew up in the Hartington area and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1930. She received her teaching certificate from Wayne State College in Wayne. She taught country school in the St. Helena area for a number of years and then worked at the Wynot Bank and the ASCS office in Hartington. She married Floranz A. "Hans" Bruening April 8, 1942, in Hartington. He died December 2, 1983, at the age of 74. After her marriage they farmed in the St. Helena area for several years and then farmed in the Wynot area until moving into Hartington in 1977. She worked in the Holy Trinity cafeteria from 1977 to 1989. In 1998, she moved to the Skyview Villa assisted living in Norfolk. In 2004, she became a resident of the Stanton Health Center.

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and Catholic Daughters of America. She was a former member of the Sts. Philip and James Catholic Church in St. James and was very active in the altar society. She was a former 4H leader. She enjoyed spending time with her family and loved to garden.

She is survived by three children and their spouses: David and Patricia Bruening, Omaha; Marilynn Bruening, Lincoln; Kaye and Bill Petta, Norfolk; 6 grandchildren: Shannon Bruening-Hughes and her husband, Steve, Matthew and Holly Petta, Katrina Bruening, David and Marci Petta, Elizabeth Bruening, Nichole Petta; two great-grandsons, Aidan and Michael Petta; 1 sister, Teresa and husband, John Thielen, Arvada, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Donavan; 3 brothers: F.J., Joseph, and Alphonse Peitz; 2 sisters: Marie McCarry and Leone Solis.
