Mildred Nell Barr Sanders

KALISPELL, Mont. — Mildred Nell Barr Sanders, age 91, passed away on Jan. 12, 2001.

Our wonderful and dearly beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister passed away quietly Friday evening. Her kindness to others and loving support of family will always be remembered. Mildred was admired by all who knew her, not only because she was a woman without guile but because she truly loved life and chose to see the good in others. She epitomized lifelong learning and deeply appreciated the earth's beauty. Always the student and the teacher, Mildred deeply cared about others. One could not leave the presence of Mildred Sanders and not be profoundly influenced to be a better person.

Mildred, the sixth of nine children, was born Aug. 23, 1909, on the family farm near Belvidere, S.D., to Edward Albert and Lydia Barbara Baughman Barr. She attended schools in and near Belvidere and attended college at the University of South Dakota and the University of Wisconsin. After receiving her teaching certificate, she taught school in western South Dakota. Before getting married, Mildred worked as an interior decorator for a Rapid City furniture store, where she became acquainted with the Sanders family.

On March 16, 1942, in Cheyenne, Wyo., Mildred married Roy Harland Sanders, a Black Hills rancher. They ranched in the Black Hills for almost 31 years before moving to Dupuyer, Mont., where they ranched for three years before retiring on the Flathead River near Kalispell. Mildred, always education-minded, was interested in reading geology, family history, politics, community causes and anything that lifted and challenged the mind. As well, she was involved in Red Cross home nursing for a number of years. She was an avid gardener and loved nature and accompanying Roy into the Bob Marshall on horseback. She was very dedicated to her church callings and was a devoted grandmother, mother and faithful wife. The family would like to thank the staff of both Immanuel Lutheran Home and Harmony House for their support and care of Mildred.

Mildred is survived by her husband, Roy; son, Daniel Barr Sanders, and wife, Pat, of Kalispell; daughters, Laurel Jeanne (Gary) Kramer of Orem, Utah, and Kathryn Ann (John) Stott of Hayden Lake, Idaho; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Harriet Marsh Connelly of Rapid City, S.D.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1380 Whitefish Stage Road, Kalispell. Friends are invited to call at the church one hour prior to services. Burial will follow at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery. The family request memorials in Mildred's name to either Immanuel Lutheran Home or Hospice.

Buffalo Hill Funeral Home in Kalispell is caring for the family.
