George Stec

RAPID CITY — George Stec, 70, Rapid City, died at his home Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, after a long illness.

George was born to Anton and Agnes (Lazarowicz) Stec on Feb. 15, 1930, at Long Pine, Neb. He graduated from Rock County High School in Bassett, Neb., and entered the U.S. Air Force in 1951. He was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1955, serving as a radio and ECM operator on a test flight crew and later on a B-36 crew.

On Oct. 23, 1954, George was united in marriage to Shirley Mutchler at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Rapid City. To this union two children were born, Michael and Maureen.

After George's discharge from the Air Force, he attended National College in Rapid City. In 1956, he accepted a position with the U.S. Post Office and continued his studies at NCB night school for four long years, earning his diploma in Business Administration and Accounting in 1960.

He spent 32 years at the Post Office, 22 of those as a letter carrier and the last 10 years traveling western South Dakota as a Postal Systems Examiner. He retired May 1, 1988. After his retirement, he worked with the Stec's Advertising family business with his wife, Shirley, and son Michael, and he continued in that endeavor until December 1, when his illness forced him to be confined to his home.

George was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Fraternal Order of Elks and the American Legion. He served as chairman of the Supervisory Committee of the Black Hills Federal Credit Union for several years. George was a man of many talents as well as a loving husband, a compassionate father and a kind and patient grandpa. He was always quick with a witty word, and his wonderfully dry sense of humor will be missed by his family and friends. He was a hard worker, and he taught his children and grandchildren many things, most recently during his illness when he modeled for us all tremendous willpower and selflessness. Even at his worst moments, his concern was for those who cared for him.

Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Shirley, Rapid City; a son, Michael, and his wife, Janice; a daughter, Maureen, (Stec) Zimney and her husband, Barry, all of Rapid City; four grandchildren, Jarod and Nickolas Stec, and Luke and Laura Zimney, all of Rapid City; three brothers, Alfred and Stanley Stec, Long Pine, Neb.; Peter Stec, Ogallala, Neb.; three sisters, Pauline Kosmicki, Denver, Bernice Voller, Beatrice, Neb., Teresa Morrison, Ainsworth, Neb.; an aunt, Frances Lazarowicz of Colome; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Anton and Agnes Stec, George was preceded in death by three brothers, Greg, Leo and Anthony Stec.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, with family members present beginning at 5 p.m.

Christian Wake Services will be at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Rapid City with Msgr. William O'Connell presiding. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City.
