Florence Krug

AVON -- Florence R. Krug, 96, of Avon died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in Tyndall, SD.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church in Avon. Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery, rural Springfield. Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel in Avon.

Florence R. Krug was born March 30, 1908, at Avon, South Dakota, the daughter of Henry O. and Ida Mae (James) Krug. She died Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Center in Tyndall, SD. Florence had attained the age of 96 years, 10 months and three days.

Florence graduated from Avon High School and from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield with a four year degree. Florence taught school for three years in rural Charles Mix County, 12 years in rural Bon Homme County and 30 years in the Tyndall Public School system. She was proud to have been a teacher for 45 years.

Florence was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Avon and served as President of United Presbyterian Women for three years. She was also active in Rebecca Circle, the Avon Flower Club, P.E.O. of Tyndall, and was a past member of S.D.E.A. and N.E.A. Florence enjoyed crocheting, knitting, tatting and reading.

Thankful for having shared her life are her sister-in-law, Helen Krug of Avon.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Blanche; brother, Ben; and a nephew, Clinton.

Theresa Lydon

COLERIDGE, Neb. -- Theresa A. Lydon, 100, of Coleridge, Neb., died Wednesday (February 2, 2005) at Park View Haven Nursing Home in Coleridge.
Funeral services are pending at the Wintz Funeral Home in Coleridge.

Jean Vardsveen

Jean M. Vardsveen, 85, of Yankton died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2005) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.
Memorial service is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton, with the Rev. David Lund officiating. Inurnment is in the Yankton Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Phyllis Benson

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. -- Phyllis Benson, 75, of South Sioux City, Neb., died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2005) at Matney Colonial Manor, South Sioux City.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Viborg.

Visitation begins one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Viborg Funeral Home.

Ruben Bertsch

EATON, Colo. -- Ruben Bertsch, age 86, of Eaton, Colorado, died December 15, 2004, at Life Care Center in Greeley, Colorado.
He was born at home on June 3, 1918, in Freeman, SD, to Emanuel and Henrietta (Stolher) Bertsch. He was the 3rd child of 15 and was the 1st son. He grew up at Freeman (Farm) SD On February 11, 1945, he married Hattie Stoebner. They moved to Forbes, ND, where he farmed and did carpenter work. In May 1967, they moved to Loveland, CO, where he built his home on Horseshoe Lake. He worked as a carpenter in Loveland for 4 years and then went to work at Kodak, where he retired in 1983. Hattie passed away on July 4, 1978. Ruben then married A. Ruth Gann on June 2, 1979.

He was very active in church activities and was a member of the Peace Reformed Church in Loveland and the Grace Reformed Church in Greeley. Ruben loved his garden and roses. He enjoyed his carpentry work and building dog houses. He enjoyed his family and liked to travel.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Bertsch of Eaton; daughter: Myra Criswell (Manard) of Loveland; sons: Richard (Darlene) Gann of Eaton and Larry (Sandy) Gann of Eaton; sisters: Leontina McKay of Cherokee, IA; Linda Bell of Hutchison, KS; Ida Doyle of Yankton, SD; brothers: Gideon Bertsch of Menno, SD; Lorenz Bertsch of Loveland, CO; Edward Bertsch of Tennessee; Leroy Bertsch of Arizona; 4 grandchildren: Melvin Criswell, Mark Criswell, Tammy Cussins and Tom Gann; 9 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 1st wife, Hattie; son, Gerald Lee; a daughter, Marlys May; 4 sisters, 3 brothers, 3 great-grandchildren

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at Stoddard Funeral Home, Greeley. Interment will be in the Tripp City Cemetery in Tripp, South Dakota

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday at Stoddard Funeral Home.

Colette Schiefen

LE MARS, Iowa -- Colette A. Schiefen, 89, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Monday January 31, 2005, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
The former Colette Ann Nepple was born October 26, 1915, on the family farm in Carroll County, just east of Templeton. She received her education at the parochial school in Templeton. As a young woman, Colette moved to Merrill where she was the housekeeper for Msgr. Zeno Reising at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church for nine years.

On January 31, 1950, Colette married Theodore Schiefen at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. The couple made their home west of Le Mars and farmed their entire married lives. Theodore passed away on February 20, 1968. In 1982, Colette moved into Le Mars.

Colette was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and the Christian Mother's Society.

Survivors include four children: Maryjane Tapper and her husband, Gaylen of Akron, Lanice Engebretson and her husband, Fred of Scarville, IA, Fred Schiefen and his wife, Judy of Le Mars, and Grace Ann Schiefen and her husband, John Gunderson of Irene, SD; 11 grandchildren: Michael and T.J. Tapper; Ann, Ryan, and Chris Engebretson; Ted, Tonya, Tracy, and Travis Schiefen; and Andy and Nicky Gunderson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Theodore; a daughter, Theresia Oetken in 1989; five brothers: Ed, Alphonse, Lawrence, Herbert and Norbert Nepple; and two sisters in infancy: Mary and Magdela.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday February 2, 2005, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, with Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home with a 4:00 p.m. Christian Mother's rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Scriptural Wake Service.

Visitation will resume one hour prior to funeral service at St. Joseph's Church on Wednesday.

Ty Robertson

WAGNER -- Ty Donald Robertson, infant son of Michael and Michelle (Peters) Robertson of rural Wagner, was born and died Sunday (Jan. 2, 2005) at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran Church, Wagner, with burial in the ZCBJ Cemetery, rural Wagner.

A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Wagner, is in charge of arrangements.

Sharon Buchholtz

WINNER -- Sharon Buchholtz, age 61, of Winner, SD, died January 6, 2005, at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center.
Sharon Eriksen, daughter of Jeanne Eriksen and Marvin Edward Eriksen, was born June 12, 1943, in Gregory, South Dakota. She graduated from Winner High School in 1961. She graduated from Greene's Beauty College in December 1961 and owned her own beauty shop for several years. She was later employed as a typist for court reporter Roger Paschke and then as a substitute teacher for Todd County School system. In January of 1985, Sharon and her husband, George, established Winner Alcohol and Drug Counseling Services. Sharon attended the University of South Dakota and earned her CCDC III on April 23, 1998.

Sharon was named the director of Winner Alcohol and Drug Counseling Services in 1995. Sharon and her staff have provided chemical dependency services in the Sixth Judicial Circuit to Tripp, Todd, Gregory, Bennett, Jones, Lyman and Mellette counties. For more than two years, she devoted additional time to drive to Rapid City on a weekly basis to provide services to juveniles in the Seventh Judicial Circuit to Pennington County. The South Dakota Corrections Association recognized her for her work when she received the prestigious 2001-2002 Outstanding Service Award. In 1999, Sharon received the Distinguished Service Award from the South Dakota Chemical Dependency Association. Sharon had a positive impact on the lives of many clients and their families. She wasn't in the business to make money, she was there to make a difference and help the people who needed it. Sharon would not give up on anyone and she wouldn't give up on a task until a solution was found. She has demonstrated her commitment to those who suffered from chemical dependency by being professional, astute, tough and yet compassionate. Her professionalism and knowledge was surpassed only by her friendliness and cooperation to work closely with the court system.

She married George Buchholtz on May 22, 1965, in Winner, South Dakota. Sharon is survived by her two sons: Brian (Kristal) Buchholtz of Pierre, South Dakota, and Bradley (Jenny) Buchholtz of Yankton, South Dakota. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: Karissa, Auston and Isaac Buchholtz of Pierre, South Dakota, and Sidney and Samantha Buchholtz of Yankton, SD. She is also survived by her cousin, Marlene Burdick of Winner, South Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her mom and her husband, George Buchholtz, who died on February 15, 1998.

Sharon was a member of the United Methodist Church of Winner, South Dakota and at the time of her death was a member of the church board. She was a member of the Lioness Club, the American Legion and the Winner Chamber of Commerce. She also served as a Cub Scout Leader. Sharon was also a member of the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors, the South Dakota Chemical Dependency Association and the South Dakota Corrections Association.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 10, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Winner. Burial will be in the Winner Cemetery.

Visitation will begin on Sunday, January 9, 2005, from 4-8 p.m. at Mason Funeral Home in Winner.

Glenn Schmidt

WINNER -- Glenn Schmidt, age 84, of Winner, SD, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2005, at the Winner Regional Nursing Home.
Glenn Everett Schmidt, the son of Joseph and Anna (Brunse) Schmidt was born August 12, 1920, in Tripp County, South Dakota. He grew up and attended rural school in the Colome area and graduated from Colome High School. Glenn enlisted in the Army in June 1942. He served overseas with the 6th Air Force in Panama and the Galapagos Islands. He was a Radar Technician with the 554th Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion. Glenn was Honorably Discharged in December 1945. After his discharge, Glenn returned to Winner and married Martha Behrens on September 4, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winner.

While raising his family of three sons, Glenn worked for Miller Brothers Auto and General Motor Equipment. Glenn was also active in the VFW and the America Legion. After retiring in 1985, Glenn stayed very active in his community. He enjoyed camping with his family, hunting with his sons, and fishing with his friends. Glenn took great pride in his grandchildren and made numerous wooden toys for them to enjoy. He enjoyed wood working and was very active in his church.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Martha of Winner, SD; three sons: Reginald of Chicago, IL; Steven (Peggy) of Yankton, SD; and Larry of Winner, SD; his grandchildren: Eric (Kim) of Shawnee, OK; Jeffrey and Stephanie of Yankton, SD; and his great-grandchildren: Evan and Elizabeth of Shawnee, OK; and one brother, Paul (Francis) Schmidt of Winner, SD.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald; and two brothers in infancy.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Winner. Burial will be in the Winner Cemetery.

Mason Funeral Home, Winner, is in charge of the arrangements.

Ejner Frandsen

LAKE ANDES -- Ejner Frandsen, 77, of Lake Andes died Monday (Jan. 24, 2005) at his home in Lake Andes.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Lake Andes.

Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Koehn Brothers Funeral Home, Lake Andes.

Gloria Sheldon

Gloria C. Sheldon, 79, of Yankton died Tuesday (Jan. 25, 2005) at the Wakonda Heritage Manor in Wakonda.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Wintz & Ray Funeral Home, Yankton, with the Rev. Nelson Stone officiating. Burial is in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton.

Visitation is from 1-8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Agnes Sayler

MENNO -- Agnes Viola (Ulmer) Sayler, 88, of Menno died Tuesday (Jan. 25, 2005) at the Freeman Medical Center, Freeman.
Memorial service is 2 p.m. Friday at the Salem Reformed Church in Menno with the Rev. Michael Hecht officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the Menno Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4-9 p.m. Thursday at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno, with the family present from 6-9 p.m. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.

Kathleen D. Hansen

Kathleen D. Hansen, age 75, of Yankton, died Saturday, January 15, 2005, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
A memorial mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Reverend Ken Bain officiating.

Inurnment will be at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Crofton, Nebraska. Aaron Hansen will act as a pallbearer.

Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.

Kathleen was born April 16, 1929, at Orchard, Nebraska, to Edward and Genevieve (Gaffney) Flood. She grew up in O'Neill, Nebraska, and graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1947. She received a degree in vocal music from St. Mary's College in Xavier, Kansas in 1951. On September 25, 1951, she married Joseph F. Hansen at O'Neill, Nebraska. They lived in Norfolk after their marriage until moving to Crofton in 1964. She then taught music at St. Rose and Crofton Public Elementary Schools in Crofton. She also taught music at Bloomfield Elementary School. In 1979, she received her Master's Degree of Fine Arts at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. She taught vocal music at the University until 1992. In 1997, they moved to Yankton where she was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. She was a former member and choir director of St. Rose Catholic Church in Crofton. She loved to spend time with her family, particularly with her grandchildren and great granddaughter.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph of Yankton; six children and their spouses: Anthony and May Hansen of Elkhorn, Nebraska; Mark E. Hansen and his fiancee, Darla Carter of Elk Point, South Dakota; Brian and Susan Hansen of Montgomery, Alabama; David and Laurie Hansen of Crofton; Marie and Larry Kappel of Omaha, Nebraska; and Dr. Robert Hansen of Seattle, Washington; seven grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and one sister, Betty Wolfe of O'Neill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Bill Hansen; and two brothers, John and Francis Flood.
