Mavis Darlene Plunkett

HURON — Mavis Darlene Plunkett, 68, Huron, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Huron Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Plunkett, Huron; one son, Allen Plunkett, San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Pamela Schilling of Black Hawk, and Sandra Hathaway, Huron; six grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Jacobson, Rapid City, and Delvin Jacobson, Black Hawk; two sisters, Phyllis Swartz, El Paso, Texas, and Marvelyn Plunkett, Evansville, Ind.

Friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening and Friday morning at Welter Funeral Home in Huron. The family will be present from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at American Lutheran Church in Huron, with the Rev. Steven Grandsrud officiating.

Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Ella Mae Knutson

BISON — Ella Mae Knutson, 89, Bison, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000 at a Bismarck, N.D. hospital.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Knutson, Seaford, Va., and James Knutson, Bloomington, Minn.; five grandsons; one great-grandson; two sisters, Isabel Shinabarger, Bison, and June Lewis, Sturgis; and one brother, Boyd McKitrick, Bowman, N.D.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan 3, at Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon, and also one hour before services at the church in Bison.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at First Presbyterian Church in Bison, with the Rev. Florence Hoff officiating.

Burial will be at the Bison Cemetery.

Daniel William Painter

RAPID CITY — Born March 21, 1951, to Robert and Betty Painter in Plentywood, Mont., Daniel William Painter moved with his family to Custer in 1956. Dan attended Four Mile Country School, and junior high and high school in Custer, graduating in 1969. He then attended Chadron State College for two years. Then he enlisted in the Navy in 1971 as an Air Traffic Controller.

During his career in the Navy, he was stationed in Georgia, Texas, the Philippines and California.

Following honorable discharge from the Navy in 1980, he moved to Custer, where he was employed by Paulton Trucking for two years. Dan was hired by the FAA in 1982 as an Air Traffic Controller, and was transferred to Birmingham, Ala.

After Alabama, Dan was transferred to Atlanta, and finally to Rapid City in 1984. He retired from the FAA in 1996.

On Dec. 22, 1971, Dan married Adele Scott in Custer. To this union were born two children, Jennifer and Scott.

Dan's love for the Lord was clearly evident through his love of family and years of service in both the church and summer youth camps. Dan directed junior high camps for six years.

Dan's humor, and his love of music and life were a blessing to all who knew him. Dan's life was full of ministry, friends, family and activities; including a love for nature and outdoors, sports and photography.

Meeting the needs of others was the focus of Dan's life, whatever he was involved in. He was a fantastic support for his family and those who surrounded him.

After an accident in October of 2000, he went home to be with the Lord on December 29, 2000. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include is wife, Adele Painter, Custer; son Scott Painter, Custer; daughter Jennifer (Painter) Cowles and her husband, Ben, of Folsom, Calif.; parents Bob and Betty Painter of Custer; and sister Robbie Murchison and husband Al of Rapid City. Dan was a grandfather-to-be.

Services for Dan Painter will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at Custer Community Church. There will be visitation one hour before service on Thursday.

Public visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Isburg-McColley's Funeral Chapel in Custer.

A memorial has been established for Huntington's Disease Foundation, and donations can be made in his honor.

"For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Phil. 1:21.

Philip 'Comer' Good Buffalo

PINE RIDGE — Philip "Comer" Good Buffalo, 81, Pine Ridge, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.

Survivors include his son, Benedict Good Buffalo, Chadron, Neb.; one daughter, Maxine Brings Him Back, Vancouver, Wash.; adopted daughter, Caroline Two Bulls, Rapid City; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

One-night wake will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Oglala Recreation Center in Oglala.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at Oglala Recreation Center, with the Rev. Ben Tyon officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Sioux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Antoine W. Blue Bird

PINE RIDGE — Antoine W. Blue Bird, 45, Pine Ridge, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his daughter, Antonia Blue Bird, Pine Ridge; his mother, Edna Apple, Pine Ridge; four brothers, Jerry Bear Shield Sr., Robert Red Shirt Sr., Darrell Spotted Elk and Darrell Blue Bird, all of Pine Ridge; and three sisters, Sterling Sitting Hawk, Albuquerque, N.M., Julianna Munoz, North Platte, Neb., and Theresa Waters, Pine Ridge.

One-night wake services will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at Wakpamni CAP building in Pine Ridge.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Wakpamni CAP building.

Burial will be at Holy Rosary Mission Catholic Cemetery in Pine Ridge.

Sioux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley L. Lampert

RAPID CITY — Shirley L. Lampert, 79, Rapid City and formerly of Philip, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Shirley L. Rumsey was born Oct. 4, 1921, at Kadoka, the daughter of Steve and Katie (Deadrich) Rumsey. She grew up and received her education in Kadoka.

Shirley was united in marriage to Robert H. "Bob" Lampert on Sept. 20, 1941, at South Sioux City, Neb.

They owned and operated the Lampert Ranch south of Philip until semi-retiring in 1972, at which time they moved to their property in Rapid Valley.

After her husband's death on Dec. 9, 1983, Shirley continued to make her home in Rapid Valley.

Shirley was an active member of the United Church in Philip.

She was a member of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association, the National Cattlewomen's Association (Black Hills Chapter) and the White River Grazing District.

She was a former member of the Philip Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 100 as well as an honorary member of Rapid City Elks Lodge 1187.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two daughters, Viola Moody and her husband, Donald, of Philip, and Norma Lampert-Jiskra of Guildford, Conn.; a sister, Muriel Neisses of Powell, Wyo.; a sister-in-law, Ann Rumsey of Rapid City; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Robert H. Lampert, she was preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Katie; two brothers, Bob Rumsey and Bill Rumsey; and three sisters, Lu Parke, Sophia Babby and Bernice Miles.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, and from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at Rush Funeral Chapel in Philip, and also one hour before services at the Church.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at the United Church in Philip, with Pastor Don Lagge officiating.

Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery of Philip.

A memorial is established to the United Church of Philip.

George Frederick Denker

STURGIS — George Frederick Denker, 27, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Sturgis, in a car accident.

Survivors include his parents, Gary and Arlene Denker, Spearfish; one sister, Carrie Jackovich, Spearfish; and his grandmother, Vera Denker, Caldwell, Idaho.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery.

RAPID CITY — In loving memory of Bryan C. Rose, 37, Bryan C. Rose Jr., 5, and Danielle L. Rose, 3. They were lost to all of us in a tragic car accident in Lusk, Wyo. on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000.

Survivors include wife and mother Angela Rose of Rapid City; sons and brothers Caleb and Mitchell Rose of Rapid City; daughters and sisters April and Bryanna Rose of Rapid City; mother and grandmother LaVaun Rose of Rapid City; father and mother-in-law and grandparents David and Victoria Macdonald of Mesa, Ariz.; Bryan's sisters and brothers Kathy and Richard Miller of Lincoln, Neb., Billy Rose of Knoxville, Tenn., Jeff and LaVerne Rose of Rapid City, Elliott and Dianne Rose of Sacramento, Calif., Bob and Carol Tomlin of Duncan, Okla., Johnny Lee Gray of Scottsbluff, Neb.; Bryan's brother-in-law Paul Byron of Orlando, Fla., and his sister-in-law Jesse Macdonald of Las Vegas; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Bryan was a 1981 graduate of Central High School in Rapid City and served in the United States Air Force. He married Angela Macdonald on Dec. 15, 1984, in Rapid City. They sealed as an eternal family in the Bern, Switzerland, Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 12, 1986.

Bryan ran various enterprises in Rapid City such as Hotel Source and the Cock & Bull Restaurant. He served in many capacities in the community, including duties in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The babies, Bryan Jr. and Danielle, were just beginning their short lives and touched each of us with their sweet spirits. In death as in life, young Bryan and Danielle will walk together side by side, giving each other strength and companionship as they always have. Their pure innocence and joy showed us all unconditional love.

It is the heart that experiences God, not the reason!

Visitation will be at Rooks & Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, and then at the church on Friday for one hour before services.

Services are set for 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rapid City, with Bishop Lidvin Kjerengtroen officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with American Legion Post 22 of Rapid City performing military honors.

Henry Garfield Paulsen

STURGIS — Henry Garfield Paulsen, 92, Sturgis, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Paulsen, Whitewood; and two sons, Bob Paulsen, Sturgis, and Albert Paulsen, Arizona.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 a.m. until service time Thursday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Howard Smith officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Howard J. ‘Wally' Wallis

SUMMIT, N.J. — Howard J. "Wally" Wallis, 88, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Friendship Village of South Hills.

Howard J. Wallis was born Aug. 12, 1912, in Mitchell, S.D. He was formerly a resident of Summit for more than 40 years. Wally graduated with a BSEE from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in June 1934. He spent two years as a surveyor with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey and afterward joined Bell Telephone Laboratories where he worked for the next 41 years and retired as an executive director in August 1977. For nearly half of his career, Wally was responsible for the construction of Bell Lab facilities, including major buildings at Murray Hill, Piscataway, Whippany and Holmdel, N.J., and Indian Hill in Naperville, Ill.

Wally was a state chairman of the Research and Development Council of New Jersey; chairman of the Red Cross of Summit; organized and for three years was general chairman of the Summit Combined Spring Fund Drive where he served on the board as president of the United Campaign of Summit and New Providence, receiving the organization's first Outstanding Citizenship Award; an active member and president of the Jewett Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America; president of the Summit Junior High and Summit High School PTAs; a volunteer member of the Summit Paramedic Squad; member of the executive council and vice president of the Watchung Area Council of Boy Scouts; board member and vice president of the Summit Community Council; Board of Trustees member of the Summit Visiting Nurses Association; chairman of the Summit Area Civil Defense Emergency Response Team; a member of the Old Guard of Summit, where he served as president; sang in the choir of the Summit United Methodist Church; a member of the Masons since 1946, the N.J. Chamber of Commerce, the American Management Association — member of the All AMA Planning Committee; the Canoe Brook Country Club — Board of Trustees and chairman of the Planning Committee, and the Sigma Tau National Honorary Engineering Fraternity from 1934.

Beloved husband of the late Elsie Diehl Wallis; his wife, Kay James Wallis of Berkeley Heights, N.J.; loving father of Kay of Lakewood, Ohio, Barbara of Upper St. Clair, Pa., and Bill of Castle Rock, Colo.; brother of Walter of Tacoma, Wash., and Wilma Landmesser of Erie, Pa.; grandfather of Emily Lilly of Greenbelt, Md., and Jillian of Claremont, Calif.; and great-grandfather of Savanah and Jerilyn of Greenbelt.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the United Methodist Church of Summit.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the United Methodist Church of Summit, 17 Kent Place Blvd., Summit, NJ 07901 or the Red Cross of Summit, 695 Springfield Ave., Summit, NJ 07901.
