Agnes Blom

RAPID CITY — Agnes Blom, 69, Rapid City, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at her home in Rapid City.

Survivors include her husband, Henry Blom, Rapid City; two daughters, Nikki Geary and Susan Albers, both of Rapid City; four sisters, Katherine Plocek, Spearfish, Dena Mitchell, Lemmon, and Ann Becker and Amy Burkhartsmier, both of Moscow, Idaho; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was a longtime employee of SCI.

Funeral arrangements were handled by the Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Home in Rapid City.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Katherine Ellefson

CUSTER — Katherine Ellefson, 71, Custer, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Custer Community Hospital in Custer.

Arrangements are pending with Isburg-McColley's Chapels in Custer.

Mary Ellen Volk

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Mary Ellen Volk, 56, Scottsdale, Ariz., resident and former Rapid City resident, died at a Scottsdale hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001.

She was born April 7, 1944, at Colorado Springs, Colo., the daughter of Edward and Leola (Liebert) Sullivan. She was the youngest of eight children and spent her childhood in Wilroad Gardens, Kansas, moving to Rapid City in 1959. Mary Ellen married Michael Volk on May 27, 1960, at Newcastle, Wyo. They made their home in Rapid City until moving to Scottsdale, Ariz., in 1997.

While residing in Rapid City, she was employed as a bookkeeper with Doyle Estes Law Firm, Casey Peterson & Associates, Black Hills Oil and M.G. Oil. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the family run business. She was employed as the office manager/controller with Fiberlink Technology at Phoenix, Ariz.

Survivors include her husband, Michael Volk, Scottsdale, Ariz.; three sons, Steve Volk, and his wife Jennifer, and their daughter, Megan, Rapid City, Richard Volk, and his wife,

Lenora, and their daughters, Terra Battles, Christy Volk and Alicia Volk, and sons, Michael Volk and Travis Volk, Parker, Colo., and Jeffery Volk, and his wife, Shannon, and their children, Erik, Kevin, Kyle and Brittany, Tempe, Ariz.; a sister, Marguerite Hoelscher, and her husband, Jerome, Corpus Christi, Texas; five brothers, Phelan Sullivan, and his wife, Arlene, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jerry Sullivan, and his wife Alice, Hill City, S.D., Bill Sullivan, and his wife, Verena, Loveland, Colo., Don Sullivan, and his wife, Peg, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jim Sullivan, and his wife, Cheryl, Denver, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Joann Egbert.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Christian wake services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Church, with Rev. Bryan Sorensen presiding.

Interment will be at the Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Katharine M. Norton

RAPID CITY — Katharine Martens Norton, 86, Rapid City, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at a Rapid City nursing home after two years of a debilitating illness.

She was born in Pierre on July 23, 1914, the daughter of Glenn W. and Florence (Gold) Martens. Her father was an eminent South Dakota attorney in the early decades of the century. She attended Pierre Schools. In high school, she was the valedictorian and was chosen by the class as the most prominent girl in the various school activities. She then went to the University of South Dakota where she majored in English and Speech. In her senior year, she was president of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and also president of the Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board academic society sororities. She participated in all aspects of undergraduate theatrical events.

Katharine first came to Rapid City as a teacher of high school English. Later, she and a college friend were granted the contract to run Bluebell Lodge. The state released them from their contract when the outbreak of World War II stopped tourism. Katharine later worked at what is now the U.S. Bank and as a physician's secretary.

On June 5, 1946, she married James J. Norton in the First Methodist Church in Pierre. Her husband's work as a geologist caused the couple to live in many places: Custer, Nyack, New York, Falls Church, Virginia, Wheat Ridge, Colo., Washington, D.C., Africa, Chile, Jeddeh, Saudi Arabia, Hill City and Wheat Ridge, Colo., a second time. Following retirement in 1984, the couple moved to Rapid City. Their travels took them to all fifty states, Canada, much of South America, England, Europe, the Middle East and east Africa.

Katharine was a longtime member of PEO, most recently in Rapid City, but earlier in Denver and in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Darton Geological Society. She was also a member of the South Dakota Ornithological Union. She was a life member of the South Dakota State Historical Society.

Survivors include her husband, James J. Norton, of Westhills; a sister, Ruth Lamont, and her husband, Robert B. Lamont, Aberdeen; her husband's brother and sister and their spouses, Phil and Betty Norton, Dayton, Ohio, and Jeannette and Maynard Bertram, Bloomfield, Connecticut; a niece, Elizabeth Groves, and her husband, Jason, Rapid City; and numerous nieces and nephews and their offspring living elsewhere in the United States. Katharine's only child was stillborn in 1949 and is buried in Pierre, S.D.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, with Rev. Randy Cross officiating.

Interment will be at the Mt. View Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the South Dakota State Historical Society, 900 Governor's Drive, Pierre, SD 57501-2217.

Henrietta Nelson

LAKE ANDES — Henrietta Nelson, 79, Lake Andes, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Lake Andes Healthcare Center in Lake Andes.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Kunz, formerly of Rapid City.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Clements-Wiese Funeral Home in Lake Andes.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at First Lutheran Church in Lake Andes. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Lake Andes.

Dr. Bonnie Jewitt

SPEARFISH — Dr. Bonnie Jewitt, 77, Spearfish, died February 1, 2001, at Lookout Memorial Hospital, Spearfish.

She was born October 6, 1923, in Pringle, S.D., to Michael and Grace (Davidson) Zeimet. She was raised in Pringle and graduated from Custer High School. She attended Black Hills Teachers College, receiving her teacher's certificate, and taught at rural schools in Custer and Fall River County. In 1944, she enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp and received an honorable discharge in 1945. She returned to Spearfish to complete her education, receiving her Bachelor's Degree from Black Hills Teachers College. She continued her education, attending the University of Wyoming. She received her Master's and Doctorate in education.

On July 29, 1949, she married Dr. Keith Jewitt in Rapid City. In 1955, the couple moved to Spearfish, where she taught elementary education at Black Hills State College, and served as a consultant for early-childhood-education programs at Pine Ridge for many years. She retired in 1985.

Bonnie was a member of the Spearfish United Church of Christ, Kappa Delta Pi and Delta Kappa Gamma. She enjoyed reading and traveling. She loved her children and grandchildren very much; they thought that she made the best brownies in the world.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Keith Jewitt, Spearfish; two sons, Dr. Thomas (and Mavis) Jewitt, Fort Meade, and Dr. Steven (and Maureen) Jewitt, Seattle, Wash.; one brother, James (and Sue) Zeimet, Pringle, S.D.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and five sisters.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, February 5, 2001, at Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2001, at the United Church of Christ, Spearfish, with Rev. Mel Miller officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6 at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis.

In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund in Bonnie's memory has been established.

Fidler Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.

Bernadene Lee

STONEVILLE — Bernadene Lee, 90, Stoneville, S.D., died Friday, February 2, 2001, at the Sturgis Community Health Center.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 7, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Central Meade County Community Center at Union Center, with Rev. Wes Labrier officiating. Burial will be Wednesday at the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis at 2 p.m.

Bernadene was born January 3, 1911, in a log house at Marcus, S.D., to John W. and Luceita (Crowell) Howie. She attended grade school in rural Meade County, with the first school being a converted homestead shack. She met her future husband, Lloyd Lee, while attending high school at Stoneville. She then finished high school in Sturgis and attended Spearfish Normal School, where she received her first-grade certificate to teach. She taught school in rural Meade County for 22 years. Bernadene said, "If I could have three wishes granted, the first one would be to have helped each one of my students in at least one way." Those students attended the following schools: Berada, Howie, Sunny Slope, South Pleasant View, Lucerne, Fairpoint, United and Squaw Butte.

She married Lloyd L. Lee, a teacher, on June 24, 1933. The couple moved to various schools, where he taught until they moved to the farm near Stoneville in 1942.

Celebrating her life are five children: four daughters, Dolores E. Fallon, and her husband, William, Sturgis, Donna E. Cammack, and her husband, Floyd, Stoneville, Karen L. Kinney, and her husband, Gene, Sturgis, and Sandra N. Veal, Germany. And one son, Lucky L. Lee, and his wife, Irene, of Rapid City. One sister, Zula I. Lee, Rapid City; 20 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren also survive her.

Her parents, her husband and one brother, James Howie, preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established to the Union Center Community Church Building Fund.

Bessie Marie Mallmann

RAPID CITY — Bessie Marie

Mallmann, 100, Rapid City, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her nephew, Gilbert Roupe, Hermosa.

Arrangements are pending with Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Louis J. 'Punk' Pettit

CUSTER — Louis J. "Punk" Pettit, 78, passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at his home in rural Custer, S.D., after coping with cancer and emphysema for the past three years.

Louis James Pettit was born February 27, 1922, to Louis and Mildred (McVay) Pettit at Boulder, Colo., where his father was temporarily employed in the mining industry. The family returned to Hill City, where Punk grew up and attended school, graduating in 1939. After working various jobs, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1942. He served as an engineer gunner on a B-17 crew, Fifteenth U.S. Army Air Corp in Italy. He completed 51 bombing missions and was honorably discharged in 1945. Upon returning to Hill City, he was employed at various occupations, from butcher to mink farming.

Punk married Frances Belmont on June 5, 1949. The couple resided in Hill City following their marriage, moving to Custer in 1957. He was employed at the Evergreen Laundry prior to becoming employed with the maintenance crew at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. He retired from the National Park Service in 1988.

Over the years, he has been involved in his community, serving as PTA President, Custer City Councilman and a member of the Custer County Weed Board. He was a life member of the Custer VFW, a 50-year member of the Hill City Masonic Lodge and a member of the Custer Community Church.

Punk was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting, with a gun and a camera. In later years, he enjoyed tending his cows. One of his greatest joys was tending his peonies and sharing the beautiful blossoms with his friends and family. As a husband and father, family man, friend and lover of life, he savored each moment of life. He truly enjoyed all people, especially his coffee buddies.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Pettit, Custer; three daughters, Janet Reindl and her husband, Darryl, Pam Hammond and her husband, Jim, all of Custer, and Nancy Budden and her husband, Chris, Rapid City; nine grandchildren, Staci Baloun and her husband, Tom, Travis, Sara and Tamara Reindl, Debby and Thayne Hammon, Jeannie Bolton, and Jessie and Will Budden; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Georgia Nelson; and a brother, Herman Edwards.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City, and one hour prior to services at the church. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Custer Community Church, with Rev. Keith Ballinger and Rev. Lowell Nelson officiating.

Interment will be at the Hill City Cemetery, with military honors provided by Custer VFW Post 3442.

A memorial has been established to the National Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.
