Michael Zakery Walczak

RAPID CITY — Michael Zakery Walczak, "MZ," 16, Rapid City, died at his home Monday, Feb. 5, 2001.

Michael was born in Casper, Wyo., on March 9, 1984.

Michael was a very caring and sensitive young man who found that life was just too difficult to deal with. This had to be said.

In recent months, he had set his sights on going to culinary school in Dallas, Texas. He wanted to become a chef; in fact, he recently made of his own creation, a sweet-and-sour pork with rice dish for the whole family. It was outstanding! He was laying the foundation while working at the Radisson Hotel.

Michael was a very talented artist and had the imagination to go with it. He saw things as only an artist could. It was another way he was able to express himself.

He also loved writing poetry. When spoken words wouldn't come, his written words expressed his thoughts. He had insights that many people his age couldn't grasp, depth beyond his years.

His favorite hobby was snowboarding, which is something time didn't allow enough of. He was a risk taker, but would take it to his limits. Around our house, he was a "Jack of all trades." There wasn't anything he wouldn't do. One of his favorite projects was to decorate the house before Christmas, no matter where we lived. By the time he was done, you would have thought that our house was a scene from the movie "Christmas Vacation." He was always wanting to add more.

In honor and memory of our son, his Christmas lights will be on day and night Thursday and Friday of this week. Enjoy and remember!

Realized or not, he was growing to be "a man for all seasons."

He will be forever missed by the entire family and those who really knew him.

Survivors include his parents, Jim and Sandy Walczak, a brother, Steven Walczak, and two sisters, Crystal Walczak and April Walczak, all of Rapid City; aunts, Diane Flanigan, Meno Falls, Wis., and Michele Leibundgut, Stevens Point, Wis.; great-grandmothers, Theola Wicks, Joplin, Mo., and Jewell Maxie, Big Lake, Texas; and grandparents, Vinita McIntire, Joplin, Mo., and Samuel Starnes, Casper, Wyo.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church, with the Rev. Andrzej Wyrostek presiding. Inurnment will be at a later date.

A memorial has been established in his name.

Pallbearers will be Steven Walczak, Jesse Mutschelknause, Derek DeYoung, Cody Romey, Luke Schwitezer, Luke Scott and John Slocum.
