SPEARFISH — Art Welsh, 65, Spearfish, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Survivors include his wife, Evonne Welsh, Spearfish; his mother, Mary Welsh, New Underwood; five sons, Peter Welsh, Key West, Fla., John Welsh, Phoenix, Richard Welsh, Allen, Texas, and Joseph and Patrick Welsh, both of Milwaukee, Wis.; three daughters, Wendy Knackert and Paula Welsh, both of Milwaukee, and Christine Gustafson, Ewen, Mich.; two brothers, Wesley Welsh, Wall, and Dr. Gary Welsh, Rapid City; one sister, Laura Jean Gunn, Wasta; and nine grandchildren.

Services are pending with Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish.

Mary Ellen Volk

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Mary Ellen Volk, 56, a Scottsdale, Ariz., resident, and former Rapid City resident, died at a Scottsdale Hospital Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001.

She was born April 7, 1944, at Colorado Springs, Colo., the daughter of Edward and Leola (Liebert) Sullivan. She was the youngest of eight children and spent her childhood in Wilroad Gardens, Kansas, moving to Rapid City in 1959. Mary Ellen married Michael Volk on May 27, 1960, at Newcastle, Wyo. They made their home in Rapid City until moving to Scottsdale, Ariz., in 1997.

While residing in Rapid City she was employed as a bookkeeper with Doyle Estes Law Firm, Casey Peterson & Associates, Black Hills Oil and M.G. Oil. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the family-run business. She was employed as the office manager/controller with Fiberlink Technology at Phoenix.

Survivors include her husband, Michael Volk, Scottsdale, Ariz.; three sons, Steve Volk, and his wife Jennifer, and their daughter, Megan, Rapid City, Richard Volk, and his wife, Lenora, and their daughters, Terra Battles, Christy Volk and Alicia Volk, and sons, Michael Volk and Travis Volk, Parker, Colo., and Jeffery Volk, and his wife, Shannon, and their children, Erik, Kevin, Kyle and Brittany, Tempe, Ariz.; a daughter, Kimberly McDonald, and her husband, Dennis, and their daughter, Kaitlyn, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Marguerite Hoelscher, and her husband, Jerome, Corpus Christi, Texas; five brothers, Phelan Sullivan, and his wife, Arlene, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jerry Sullivan, and his wife Alice, Hill City, S.D., Bill Sullivan, and his wife, Verena, Loveland, Colo., Don Sullivan, and his wife, Peg, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jim Sullivan, and his wife, Cheryl, Denver; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Joann Egbert.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Christian wake services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church, with Rev. Bryan Sorensen presiding.

Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Francis L. Marshall Jr.

MARTIN - Francis L. Marshall Jr., 50, Martin, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, from natural causes at Martin Hospital in Martin.

Survivors include his son, Francis Marshall III, Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Maryrose Marshall-Moran, Duran, Penn.; three stepsons, Richard Left Hand, Lower Brule, Leonard Black Cat, Allen, and Austin Black Cat, Sioux Falls; a stepdaughter, Jackie Rynders, Rapid City; eight sisters, Pauline Gerry and Annie Brown Bear, both of Allen, Delores Plenty Arrows, Lucinda DuBray, Goldie DuBray, Suzanne Marshall and Donna Marshall, all of Martin, and Linda Walton, Alliance, Neb.; and five brothers, Kenneth, Eric, Ronald and Corbin Marshall, all of Martin, and Eddie Marshall, Allen.

The first-night wake was Monday, Feb. 5, at C.A.P. Building in Martin. The second-night wake will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at C.A.P. Building in Allen.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at C.A.P. Building in Allen, with the Rev. Daniel Makes Good and the Rev. Abraham Tobacco officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be performed by Mr. John Around Him.

Burial will be in Body of Christ Cemetery, Yellow Bear Canyon, in Allen.

Steven Allen Chase

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Steven Allen Chase, 46, Las Vegas, formerly of Belle Fourche and Bison, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, near Las Vegas.

Survivors include his mother, Yvonne Tovaas, Belle Fourche; two brothers, Jeril Tovaas and Carney Tovaas, both of Belle Fourche; and two sisters, Iris Boone, Carson City, Nev., and Kristy Donner, Hettinger, N.D.

Services are pending at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.

Lydia Meyer

NEWTON FALLS, Ohio - Lydia Meyer, 87, Newton Falls, Ohio, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at St. Joseph's Health Center in Newton Falls, Ohio.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Meyer, Newton Falls; one son, Donald Meyer, Canoga Park, Calif.; three daughters, Eleanor Rush, Newton Falls, Ohio, Carol Howard, Pierre, S.D., and Darlene Thorson, Rapid City; two brothers, Gottlieb Scholl, Rio Dell, Calif., and David Scholl, Nampa, Idaho; four sisters, Ruth Schnell, Morrill, Neb., Betty Jean Hulpke, Fallbrook, Calif.; Miriam Bliss, Plain City, Ohio, and Orlinda Bobbio, Glendale, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Newton Falls, with the Rev. Stephen Spurlock officiating. Burial will be in Newton Falls Township Cemetery in Newton Falls.

Dirk Randal Moore

CRAWFORD, Neb. - Dirk Randal Moore, 36, Crawford, Neb., died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Gaye Craig-Moore, Crawford; his parents, Kenneth and Betty Moore, Abilene, Texas; his maternal grandmother, Inez Tucker, Abilene; one sister, Renea Moore, Abilene; one brother, Glenn Moore, Abilene; two step-sons, Thomas McNickle, Clyde, Texas, and Don Hardin, Abilene; five stepdaughters, Colett Olsen, Austin, Texas, Lori Bailey, Florida, Julie Hardin and Jana Hardin, both of Clyde, Texas, and Jennifer Gibbins, San Antonio, Texas; and eight step-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Crawford Cemetery in Crawford with the Rev. Mike Stotts officiating. Arrangements are with Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Lyle E. Miller

BOWMAN, N.D. - Lyle E. Miller, 86, Bowman, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Miller, Bowman; a son, Jim Miller, Bowman; two daughters, Lola Oja and Bonnie Bowers, both of Buffalo, S.D.; a sister, Elaine Hanson, Rhame; a brother, Vernon Miller, Rhame; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A family service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Krebsbach Funeral Home in Bowman.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Bowman Lutheran Church in Bowman, with the Rev. Becca Krogstad officiating.

Burial will follow at Bowman Cemetery in Bowman.

Daniel A. Nelson

RAPID CITY - Daniel A. Nelson, 47, Rapid City, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Nelson, Rapid City; a son, Dana Nelson, Rapid City; a daughter, Neasha Nelson, Rapid City; his mother, Reva Nelson, Colman; and his father, Stuart Nelson, Alzada, Mont.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

John 'Jack' Gale

EDGEMONT - John "Jack" Gale, 65, Edgemont, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Lena Gale, Hot Springs; two sons, John Gale Jr., Redfield, and Joe Gale, Denver; four daughters, Brenda Gale, Smyrna, Tenn., Betty Ann Medson, Oelrichs, Lena Lynn Gale, Cheriton, Va., and Juanita Burdette, Hot Springs; a sister, Sally Gale, Cheriton; one nephew; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at Isburg-Vandebossche Chapel of Edgemont.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at United Church in Edgemont, with the Rev. Marion Gray officiating. Burial will be in Edgemont Cemetery in Edgemont.

Irmgard E. Neumiller

NEWELL - Irmgard E. Neumiller, 74, Newell, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Survivors include her husband, Bernard Neumiller, Newell; a brother, Hans Grunkemeyer, Germany; a sister, Hilda Langer, Germany; one aunt, Frida Massberg, Germany; and several nieces and nephews in Germany.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, and from 8 a.m. until service time Friday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, with Chaplain Simon Looking Elk officiating.

Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Florentine M. Baumeister Colgrove

LEMMON - Florentine M. Baumeister Colgrove, 93, Lemmon, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon.

Survivors include four sons, Buelis Baumeister, Lemmon, Edwin Baumeister, Pahrump, Nev., Norman Baumeister, Moxee, Wash., and James Baumeister, Cedar Falls, Iowa; one brother, Vincent Erz, Spearfish; four stepchildren, Sheila Erickson, Terry Colgrove, Dwight Colgrove and Jack Colgrove; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon. A parish vigil service and rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Prince of Peace Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon, with the Rev. Dennis Riss officiating. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery in Lemmon.

Olinda LaFave

PIERRE — Olinda LaFave, 92, Pierre, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Maryhouse Nursing Center in Pierre.

Survivors include three sons, Dennis LaFave, Seattle, Lonnie LaFave, Onida, and Eldon LaFave, Pierre; a daughter, Belva Wood, North Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters-in-law, Eva Parsons, Sturgis, and Marge LaFave, Bonesteel; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Congregational Church of Christ in Pierre, with the Rev. Roger Easland officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre.

E.E. ‘Van' VanDeventer

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — E.E. "Van" VanDeventer, age 78, a resident of Cleveland, a retired Lieutenant Colonel with the United States Air Force, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001. Mr. VanDeventer was a command navigator in WWII and Vietnam and served his country for over 27 years total, 22 of which where in active duty. During this time, he received 13 awards, including an Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation and the Vietnam Service Medal Bronze Star. Before and after his military service, he pursued a career as a minister in the Church of God of Prophecy. He was licensed as a Minister in 1948 and ordained a Bishop in 1974. His two pastorates were in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. He and his wife served Tomlinson College in many capacities. During his tenure under General Appointment for the Church of God of Prophecy, he served as Mission Representative to Africa, Europe and the Middle East and Overseer of 15 countries. He was the son of the late Fred E. and Roszella VanDeventer of Dodge, North Dakota.

He is survived by his wife and companion of 54 years, Joyce Carol Tibke VanDeventer of Cleveland, Tenn., and formerly of Dupree, South Dakota; his son, Allan D. VanDeventer, Ph. D., of Reston, Va.; daughter, Jovonna "Jodi" Riggins, P.A., of Cleveland; four grandchildren, Zachary Riggins, Sascha Wise, Andrea Riggins and Cory VanDeventer; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Amanda Wise; three brothers, Eugene, Virgil and Vernon VanDeventer; and two sisters, Estelle Wessell and Yvonne Bowen.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the Kieth Street Church of God of Prophecy in Cleveland, Tenn., with Rev. Guy Lindsey officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service time. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Chattanooga, Tennessee, National Cemetery, with Full Military Honors. Following the committal service, friends and family are invited to celebrate the life of Mr. VanDeventer at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Jordan-Stephens Family Life Center, Kieth Street Church of God of Prophecy.

The family will receive friends today from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the North Chapel of the Buckner-Rush Funeral Homes, 2600 North Ocoee Street, Cleveland, Tenn.

The family requests that Memorials be made to the Jordan-Stephens Family Life Center at the Kieth Street Church of God of Prophecy.

Katherine Ellefson

CUSTER — Katherine Ellefson, 71, Custer, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Custer Community Hospital in Custer.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Ackerman, Denver, and Gregory Ackerman, Custer; a daughter, Carol Barker, Newcastle, Wyo.; a brother, Cletis Lack, Casper, Wyo.; three sisters, Mildred Hyndman, Idaho, Marilyn Stephenson, Buffalo, Wyo., and Josephine Osberg, Torrington, Wyo.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Isburg-McColley's Chapels in Custer.

RAPID CITY — Jewel V. Davis, 87, Rapid City, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Andrew Davis, Rapid City; two daughters, Joy Byer, Nashville, Tenn., and Eunice Davis, Poplar, Mont.; two sons, Robert Davis, Okeechobee, Fla., and William Davis, Silver Spring, Md.; four sisters, Crystal Gray, Hico, Texas, Mable Alexander, Fort Worth, Texas, and Opal Yankie and Grace Pundt, both of China Spring, Texas; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks & Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.
