Orva Louise Richardson
RAPID CITY - Orva Louise Richardson, 85, of Rapid City, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at her home after bravely battling cancer.
Orva was born Nov. 21, 1915, at Canning, to Herbert and Myrtle (Shull) Hilgenbocker. Her early years of schooling were in Hayti and Pierre, and she graduated from Rapid City High School in 1934. She was married on Dec. 20, 1934, to Olney A. Richardson. The couple lived in Lead, where her husband worked at the Homestake Mine.
In 1937, Orva and Olney moved to Pedro, where they ranched for 10 years. In 1947, they moved to Rapid City, where they owned and operated the Hitchin' Post cafe for 14 years. In 1963, the couple opened Olney's Liquor Store and operated it for 16 years, until her retirement in 1979.
Orva started china painting under Lottie Henry in 1967. Two years later, she and Mrs. Henry started the China Art Guild, a club affiliated with the World Organization of China Painters. She soon opened her home to china painters, and that hospitality continued throughout her lifetime. Porcelain artists from all over the United States held seminars in her studio. In the 31 years that she was a member of the China Art Guild, she held various offices and often hosted many parties for the group. The lower level of her home was a showcase of painted china, and many people have been the recipients of her pieces. For many years, people have gathered in her studio two days or more each week to practice their porcelain artistry and to share in fellowship and food.
Orva enjoyed going to her daughter's cabin at Angostura. She loved being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Of course, she planted a large garden at Angostura, growing everything from tomatoes to cantaloupe.
Her later years were comforted by the companionship and love of her pug, "Peggy Sue."
She is survived by one daughter, Reva Blundell, and her friend, Dorlan Rathke of Rapid City; a daughter-in-law, Karen Richardson of Custer; four grandchildren, Todd Blundell of Farmersville, Calif., Nancee Driscoll and her husband, Kevin, of Washington, D.C., Troy Richardson and his wife, Christi, of Rapid City, and Timm Richardson of Custer; seven great-grandchildren, Mckena, Garett and Logan Driscoll, Tyler, Tara and Kayla Richardson, and Keri Blundell of Apopka, Fla.; one great-great-grandchild, Rayna Ann Day of Apopka, Fla.; one brother, Merle Collier, and his wife, Vivian, of Huron; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Olney, in 1983; and a son, Arthur, in July of 2000.
