"Bud went to work at Homestake Mining Co. in 1953 and worked until his retirement in 1983, after 30 years of dedicated service. His duties included Miner 1st Class, Raiseman, Drifter and Supervisor. Bud became a Supervisor in 1972 and held that position until his retirement. One of Bud's greatest contributions to the mine was to instill a positive 'Can Do' attitude within the crews he supervised. He was greatly respected by them, they valued his opinion, and were always ready for his next story. Bud's greatest loves were for family and fishing. He took care of both with a passion. He loved to chase the chinook salmon along the face of Oahe Dam with his boat full of family and friends. As you drive across the Dam in the future and happen to see a Blue Boat named 'FRIENDSHIP,' give a honk or a wave, and you may see a smile as wide as Oahe itself, and it will brighten up your day." Quote by James R. Wieser, March 28, 2001.

V. Yvonne Ericsson

ALADDIN, Wyo. - V. Yvonne Ericsson, 90, Aladdin, Wyo., died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Virginia Yvonne Ericsson was born in the northern Cave Hills of Harding County, S.D., on April 22, 1910, to Lelia Dorothea (Ashburn) and James Albert Clarkson. Yvonne's father had established the ranch in 1888, while it was still Dakota Territory, and Yvonne experienced many of the things we associate with the Old West: riding her horse to school six miles each way, herding sheep and trailing cattle. She loved the prairie and became acquainted with all of the natural grasses, flowers and living creatures. Many depended on her knowledge of the wildlife and the plants of the area.

After her first eight years of schooling in Harding County, she boarded in Spearfish for high school and graduated in 1929. Working in the Buffalo Bank for a year before she and her sister, Maria, attended the University of South Dakota was a deciding factor in Yvonne's college major, which was Economics.

On Sept. 2, 1933, Yvonne married Arnold Lorenzo (Eric) Ericsson in Pierre, S.D., where she was employed in the State House. The couple moved to Belle Fourche, where they raised their family of three sons and three daughters.

Community service was important to Yvonne. She was a Girl Scout leader for 35 consecutive years, during which she took troops to camps at Red Rocks in Colorado and Minnesota. She traveled to Washington, D.C., with the troop of her youngest daughter, Lynn, and was a Cub Scout Den Mother for her sons' troops.

She helped formulate the Bit and Spur Club and was active on trail rides for years, and she rode in the quadrille on her favorite horse, Starlight.

She was a member of the DAR, Manthono Club, Beta Sigma Phi and Eastern Star.

She wanted her children to have the opportunity to explore. Every summer, a well-planned trip took the family to different parts of the United States, Mexico and Canada. In later years, she and Eric traveled to Europe and Scandinavia, but she felt that nothing compared to the beauty of the Diamond E Ranch on the Belle Fourche River in the Bear Lodge of Wyoming, where she spent the last 35 years of her life.

In the early 1980s, Yvonne lost all but her peripheral vision to macular degeneration. This meant that her favorite pastime of reading would no longer be a part of her life, but she did not lose her zest for living. Her memory was absolutely amazing, and both sides of her family, the Clarksons and the Ericssons, called upon that memory for facts, details and dates.

She was quite a lady. Her surviving three sons and two daughters will miss her gentle ways and understanding heart. Donna Freemole and husband Kenneth of Casper, Wyo.; Ronald and wife Jean of Alzada, Mont.; Roland and wife Mary Ellen, Las Vegas; Beverly Keegan, Tallahassee, Fla.; and Lee, Casper, Wyo.

She left her seven grandchildren a great heritage. Julie Anderson, Rapid City, Scott Ericsson, Alpine, Texas, Kathleen Chaney, Atlanta, David Freemole, Casper, Ann Miller, Atlanta, Meredith Ericsson, Los Angeles, and Leslie Ericsson, Scottsdale, Ariz. Nine great-grandchildren survive her, as do five nephews and three nieces.

Her husband, Eric, and her daughter Lynn preceded her in death, as did her sister Maria and her brother James.

Yvonne chose not to have a service other than the family distribution of her ashes.

A memorial has been established to the V. Yvonne Ericsson Trust.

The Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
