Donnajane 'D.J.' Bowden Hatala

RAPID CITY - Donnajane "D.J." Bowden Hatala, 69, of Rapid City, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at a local nursing home.

She is survived by two brothers, Gene Bowden of Great Falls, Mont., and Duane Bowden of Maryland; a half-brother, Huey Long of Grand Island, Neb.; her foster son, Arnie Hernandez of Rapid City, whom she raised for the past 30 years; a lifetime friend, Ilene Combstock of Rapid City, whom she considered a sister; one niece, Susan Sorbel, and her husband, Dan, of Rapid City; two great-nieces; and three great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael J. Hatala; her parents; one sister; and two brothers.

Her hobbies included gardening, china painting, Japanese flower arranging and doll making.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2001, at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, with Rev. Ron Jensen officiating.

Visitation will be at Rooks & Kirk Funeral Home on Friday from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., when family and friends will gather at the funeral home for the procession to the cemetery.

Roy F. Jones

NEWCASTLE, Wyo. - Roy F. Jones, 96, Newcastle, Wyo., died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Colonial Manor in Custer.

Survivors include his son, Jim Jones, Newcastle, Wyo.; and two daughters, Mabell Aldridge, Newcastle, Wyo., and Barbara Schmitz, Sinclair, Wyo.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Worden Chapel in Newcastle, Wyo., with the Rev. Charles Dutcher officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newcastle, Wyo.

Iola R. Merwin

HOT SPRINGS - Iola R. Merwin, 82, Hot Springs, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Sturgis Community Health Care Facility, Sturgis.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Rooks, Isburg, McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs. Funeral services for Iola Merwin will be at 3 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2001, at the chapel, with the Rev. Peter Dahlberg officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Oral.

Iola was born in Alexandria, Minn., to John and Rose (Foote) Buell Oct. 28, 1918. In 1940, she married Kenneth Nyberg, and to this union were born two children, Wayne and Janice. On Dec. 8, 1944, Iola married Eugene Merwin and were blessed with two children, Mildred and Betty.

Iola lived in Hot Springs most of her life. She worked at the Hot Springs Lee Store for many years. She was very active with the Brownies. She also enjoyed fishing and camping with her family and really enjoyed working with crafts and baking.

Iola is survived by one son, Wayne Nyberg, Pleasanton, Calif.; three daughters, Jan Wilson and husband Bud, Murrietta, Calif., Betty Edleman and husband Royce of Sturgis, Millie Jahrig, Brewton, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Iola was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, in 1986; a grandson in 1988; two sisters; and one brother.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks, Isburg, McColley's Chapel of the Hills, Hot Springs.

Eleanor J. (Sun Bear) Flynn

RAPID CITY - Eleanor J. (Sun Bear) Flynn, 65, Rapid City, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in Rapid City.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Flynn, Rapid City; two sons, Robert Sun Bear, Rapid City, and Thomas Scott Flynn, Dallas, Texas; a daughter, Dawn Lewis, Rapid City; a brother, John Ghost, Manderson; five sisters, Wanda Thayer, Hermosa, and Joyce and Janice Little Dog, Daria Swain and Cynthia Plenty Arrows, all of Manderson; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A two-night wake will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Manderson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at the church, with the Rev. Jim Ryan, S.J., officiating. Burial will be at Standing Bear Cemetery in White Horse Creek in Manderson.

Sioux Funeral Home in Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Martha Brady

OGALLALA, Neb. - Martha Brady, 46, Ogallala, Neb., died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Neb.

Survivors include her husband, Lucio Munoz, Ogallala, Neb.; four sons, Martin, Jesse, Enez and Ecequiel Brady, all of Ogallala, Neb.; a daughter, Alvina Brady, Ogallala, Neb.; a brother, Arthur Brady, Pine Ridge; a sister, Lorraine Tracke, Howes; and four grandchildren.

A one-night wake will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Wakpamni CAP Building, east of Pine Ridge.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at Wakpamni CAP Building, with the Rev. Bill Pauly, S.J., as celebrant. Burial will be at Holy Rosary Mission Cemetery in Pine Ridge.

Sioux Funeral Home in Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Lawson F. Waters

PINE RIDGE - Lawson F. Waters, 68, Pine Ridge, died Monday, March 19, 2001, in Eagle Butte.

Survivors include two sons, Austin Waters Jr., Lame Deer, Mont., and Jerome Waters, Milwaukee, Wis.; two daughters, Patty Waters, Milwaukee, Wis., and Tana Waters, Portland, Ore.; a sister, Norma Mills, Eagle Butte; and seven grandchildren.

A one-night wake will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge, with the Rev. Wajira Namphet as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Anne's Catholic Cemetery in Wolf Creek.

Sioux Funeral Home in Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

William F. 'Willie' Boyce

RHAME, N.D. - William F. "Willie" Boyce, 72, Rhame, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.

Survivors include his wife, Peg Boyce, Rhame; three sons, Scott Boyce, Bowman, Jeff Boyce, Beulah, and Todd Susag, Fargo; two daughters, Pam Maher, Fargo, and Pam Susag, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one sister, Rolene Taylor, Bowman, two half-sisters, Sharon Rutherford, Rapid City, and Carolyn Sonderal, McFarland, Wis.; one half-brother, Myron Nelson, Rapid City; and seven grandchildren.

A family service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Krebsbach Funeral Service in Bowman.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Friday, March 23, at First Lutheran Church in Rhame, with the Rev. Becca Krogstad officiating. Burial will be at Tuttle Cemetery in Rhame.

Krebsbach Funeral Service of Bowman, is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Louise Tapio

PINE RIDGE - Shirley Louise Tapio, 66, died March 19, 2001, at the Pine Ridge Hospital. She was born Sept. 3, 1934, to Martin and Louise Shangreau of Potato Creek.

On Sept. 13, 1954, she married her husband and high school sweetheart, G. Wayne Tapio in Pine Ridge. From this marriage came five children, Dale Wayne, Lyle Martin, Harlan, Letoy and Bobby.

In 1959, she traveled with her husband and family to Crownpoint, N.M., Toadlena, N.M., and Teec Nos Pos, Ariz., where she worked for the Indian Health Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

She returned home to Pine Ridge Village in 1971, where she worked for Indian Health Service. She retired on Dec. 28, 1999, after 40 years of outstanding, dedicated and quality service to the Oyate.

She graduated from Pine Ridge High in May of 1954. She was salutatorian of her graduating class, a four-year cheerleader, member of the "O" Club, member of the Chorus and Glee Club, and served on many high school clubs and committees, which included the vice-president of her class.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Parish Council and sang in the choir for many years. She also worked with many youth activities at Sacred Heart.

She worked for many years with youth activities in the Pine Ridge Village District: Den Mother for Cub Scouts, worked with Boy Scouts, youth boxing club, basketball, football and baseball leagues, in which her sons all participated. She also worked in the Girl Scout program, which her daughter was a member of.

She is survived by her husband, G. Wayne Tapio; her sons, Dale Wayne Tapio, Pine Ridge, Marty and Mary Jo Tapio, Pine Ridge, Bobby Tapio, South Falls; and her daughter, Letoy Rae and Roy Martinez of Pine Ridge. Sisters, Ann and Tom Conroy and family of Batesland, Cecelia (Sister Babe) and Billy Cottier and family of Pine Ridge, Mildred Apple and family of Potato Creek, Bernice Watters and family, Catherine Steele and family of Pine Ridge, Betty and George Wilson and family of Pine Ridge, Jean and Levi Good Crow and family of Pine Ridge, Jackie Mousseau and family of Pine Ridge, Patricia Red Shirt and family of Pine Ridge; and brother-in-law, Delbert R. Tapio of Pine Ridge. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Myron Tapio, Camp Lajune, N.C., and Roy Jr. and Dereck Wayne and Kristi of Pine Ridge; and three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Harlan Louis Tapio; four brothers, Calvin, Wesley, Charley and Bernard; one sister, Flora Bradford; and brothers-in-laws, John Apple Sr., Link Bradford and Jim Watters Sr.; her parents, Martin and Louise Shangreau; and in-laws, Raymond and Bertha Tapio.

She enjoyed being with her family and her many friends and listening to western music. She was known and will be remembered by many as a "quiet and very wonderful and caring lady who never hurt anyone."

Services are scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2001, at Pine Ridge High School, with the Rev. Steve Sanford officiating.

A memorial fund will be established in her name to assist families of the Pine Ridge Reservation who must travel to and stay in other cities (Rapid City, Minneapolis, Denver, etc.) to be near loved ones with cancer.

John R. Corey

RAPID CITY - John R. Corey, 78, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Survivors include his daughter, Linda Williams, Rapid City; two sons, John Corey, Onawa, Iowa, and Robert Corey, Sioux City, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Behrens Mortuary Chapel in Rapid City, with the Rev. Michael Hight officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by Sturgis Honor Guard.

Virginia Granter

MITCHELL - Virginia Granter, 81, Mitchell, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Studer, Rapid City, and Lisa Lippert, Cedar Falls, Iowa; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 23, at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.

Evalena Collins

RAPID CITY - Evalena Collins, 93, Rapid City, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at a local nursing home.

She was born Feb. 18, 1908, in Medill, Mo., to Henry W. and Flora Jane Keester. Evalena moved to Imlay in 1909 with her parents, where she attended grade school. Later, she attended high school at Rapid City Central High School. She also attended Black Hills Normal School in Spearfish.

Evalena married Albert A. Collins in 1927.

Survivors include one son, Albert Collins Jr., Rapid City; two daughters, Fern D. Quinn and Ella Mae Dalton, both of Rapid City; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and one sister, Daisy, and her husband, Ben Schellenger, Rapid City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Collins; four sisters, Ida, Della, Pansy and Lillian; and four brothers, Harry, Ray, Ross and James.

Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City, with the Rev. Bruce Baum officiating.

Services arrangements are under the direction of Behrens Mortuary, Rapid City.

Alice Ruth Dahl

PARADISE, Calif. - Alice Ruth Dahl, 77, Paradise, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Feather River Hospital in Paradise.

Survivors include two daughters, Irene Ferdig, Lodi, Calif., and Elaine Kirby, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son, George Coates, Arvada, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Niki Woodward, Scottsdale, Ariz.; two stepgrandchildren; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four brothers, Harold Honadel, Edgemont, S.D., Howard Honadel, Newcastle, Wyo., Alfred Honadel, Spearfish, S.D., and Richard Honadel, Evanston, Wyo.; and a sister, Betty Scott, Loveland, Colo.

Services were held Tuesday, March 20, at Paradise Cemetery in Paradise. Burial was at Paradise Cemetery.

Paradise Chapel of the Pines Funeral Home in Paradise was in charge of arrangements.
