To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven. A TIME TO BE BORN ...
Florence Bernice Oliver (Burris) was born July 27, 1913, near Canton, on the Oliver homestead. She was the youngest daughter of Ralph E. Oliver and Georgianna "Maude" (Griswold) Oliver.
Her early education took place at Kerley country school. In 1931, she was graduated from Canton High School, and continued her education, attending South Dakota State College, and earning a bachelor's degree in home economics in 1935.
A TIME TO LOVE ...
From 1935 to 1937, Florence taught home economics at Colton High School.
Later, while teaching at Miller High School (1939-1940), she met her future husband, Benjamin B. Burris.
They were married June 2, 1942, at the Methodist Church in Canton.
A TIME TO BUILD UP ...
The couple moved to Spearfish in 1946 and spent the rest of their life together there. They raised four children, who survive her. Florence will be remembered for her devotion to her family.

Florence was a lifelong member of United Methodist Church, Spearfish. She attended regularly, assisted with Bible School, was a member of Esther Circle and helped prepare and serve numerous church dinners.
A TIME TO PLANT ...
Florence enjoyed all aspects of home economics and practiced all facets while raising her family. She was an accomplished seamstress and shared her talents by doing sewing alternations. In the past, she designed and constructed the coronation robes (which are still in use today) for Spearfish High School, BHSC, the Snow Queen, and Methodist School of Nursing in Mitchell. Florence will be remembered by many of her friends and family members for her chocolate-chip cookies. Besides sewing, her hobbies were flower gardening and knitting, and crocheting afghans and baby blankets.
The community also was the recipient of the gift of Florence's service. Over the years, she participated in the Cancer, Heart, Easter Seal and March of Dimes fund drives. Also, with her husband, Florence was involved with the promotions for the renovation of the Spearfish Methodist Church, the building of Lookout Memorial Hospital, where she was later on the hospital auxiliary; and the construction of the community swimming pool.
