Ralph J. Tieszen

RAPID CITY - Ralph J. Tieszen, 74, of Rapid City, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital after a long illness.

He was born on Feb. 19, 1927, in Marion, to John F. and Justina (Kliewer) Tieszen. He attended Canistota schools and graduated from Canistota High School. He also attended and graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. He served in the military and was a veteran of World War II.

On March 1, 1949, he married Velna Wingert, his high school sweetheart, in Canistota. Ralph served as state director of South Dakota Job Service, retiring in 1978 after 30 years. The couple moved to Peoria, Ariz., in 1979, and returned to Rapid City in 1987.

Ralph was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion and the Elks.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Velna "Bee" Tieszen, Rapid City; two sons, Brig. Gen. Randal M. Tieszen and his wife, Kathy, currently serving in Germany, and First Sgt. (Ret.) Timothy G. Tieszen and his wife, Yun Kyong, of Wichita, Kan.; two daughters, Donna Marie Chiles and her husband, Dewey, of Longmont, Colo., and Renee A. Mulvey and her husband, Kevin, of Altoona, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Capt. Mathew James Tieszen, Kristine Ann Handel, Rebecca Marie Tieszen, Lisa Marie Ecker, David Jeffrey Ecker, Aaron Michael Grant and Jillane Mulvey; and two great-grandchildren, Savannah Rose Handel and Acacia Marie Ecker.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. A Christian wake service, with rosary, will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 21. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 22, at Blessed Sacrament Church, with the Rev. David Orians presiding. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City.

A memorial has been established to the Cornerstone Rescue Mission.

Alice Scheurer

RAPID CITY - Alice Scheurer, 67, Rapid City, died at Rapid City Regional Hospital Sunday, March 18, 2001.

She was born Aug. 9, 1933, at Vale. She moved to Rapid City, as a child, with her family and attended Rapid City schools, graduating from Rapid City High School.

Alice married Dale Scheurer on April 20, 1952, in Rapid City. They lived for a brief time in Oakland, Calif., while Dale was in the military. They returned to Rapid City and have lived here since that time. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She also was active in playing bridge and was a past president of the Black Hills Bridge Club. She loved to bowl and was active with bowling leagues.

Survivors include her husband, Dale Scheurer, Rapid City; two sons, Steve Scheurer and Stan Scheurer, and their families, all of Rapid City; a daughter, Sandra Fairbrother, and her family, Kearney, Neb.; her mother, Gladys Wilson, Rapid City; a twin sister, Alta Roberts, Rapid City; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, with Dale Bartscher officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the American Cancer Society and First Christian Church.

Leighton Rich

RAPID CITY - Leighton Rich, 36, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Sioux Falls.

Survivors include six children, Tonya and Robin, both of Minneapolis, Wallace, Cody, Chavez and Justice, all of Rapid City; his father, Arley, and wife Gaylene, Rapid City; three brothers, Wesley, Idaho, Arley and Arlen, both of Rapid City; and two sisters, Arla and Janine, both of California.

A one-night wake service will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at Oyate Center in Rapid City, with viewing until the service on Friday.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 23, at Oyate Center in Rapid City, with the Rev. Wendell Ghost Bear and the Rev. Darrell New officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.

Rooks & Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

June Pinkerton

NEMO - June Pinkerton died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Sturgis.

Funeral services for June A. Pinkerton, 78, Nemo, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the Little White Church in Hill City, with Pastor Bill Savery officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be at Black Hills National Cemetery at 1 p.m.

June Ardell Caldwell was born June 5, 1922, at Branson, Colo., to Hoke C. and Sarah B. (McVay) Caldwell. The family moved to South Dakota in 1932. June graduated from Hill City High School. She received her degree in nursing in Denver. She served her country as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army on the European Front in World War II. On Oct. 7, 1945, she married Robert R. Pinkerton at Brodus, Mont. She continued her nursing in Idaho and at Colonial Manor in Custer for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Kim Sundquist and companion, Larry Rhodes, Nemo; a son, Randy B. Pinkerton and wife, Annie, of Hill City; one grandson, Scott Pinkerton and wife, Jennifer, Corvallis, Ore.; one sister, Sally St. Pierre, Wallingford, Conn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, Bob, preceded her in death in 1998. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Billie in 1994, and Carroll in January 2001.

Arrangements are in the care of Rooks, Isburg, McColley Chapel in Custer.

Bessie Mae Schreiber

AGAR - Bessie Mae Schreiber, 89, Agar, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.

Survivors include her children, Walter Schreiber, Edward Schreiber and Marion Schreiber, all of Agar, Robert Schreiber, Foley, Ala., Joan Bush, Pierre, and Jean Willis, Denver; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a brother, Floyd Torbert; two sisters, Buelah Webb and LaVon Veteto, both of Clinton, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to the conclusion of the prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Agar Methodist Church in Agar, with the Rev. Mary Lee Lint officiating. Burial will be at Onida Cemetery.

Helen LuEtta ‘Lu' Hopkins

TACOMA, Wash. — Helen LuEtta "Lu" Hopkins, 69, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, in Tacoma.

Helen LuEtta "Lu" Hopkins was born Feb. 11, 1932, in Brunswick, Neb. She resided in Steilacoom for the past 22 years. LuEtta spent most of her youth in Rapid City, South Dakota, where she met her loving, surviving husband of 50 years, Cyril G. Hopkins, known as "Hoppy." He was in the U.S. Air Force, and they traveled extensively around the country and Japan before retiring at McChord AFB in 1968. During the latter years of "Hoppy's" commitment to the Air Force and up until September of 1977, "Hoppy" and "Lu" became partners in "Hopkins Builders Inc.," building homes in Lakewood and also Anchorage, Alaska. This partnership would not have been possible without Lu's unfailing commitment to her husband and family. She will be greatly missed for her love and dedication to the family and home. During this 50-year union, "Lu" was a full-time homemaker and mother to their three children: Nancy and Frank Berlen (daughter and son-in-law), Mike and Bea Hopkins (son and daughter-in-law) from Anchorage, Alaska, and Bruce Hopkins from Susanville, California.

"Lu" is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn "Lynn" and Norm Rynders of Rapid City, South Dakota; five grandchildren: Corrine and Courtney Berlen, Amy and Ben Hopkins, Brian Hopkins; and one great-granddaughter, due in May 2001. LuEtta's parents, Flora and Gerry Miller of Rapid City, South Dakota, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Mountain View Funeral Home in Tacoma. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at the Mountain View Garden Chapel in Tacoma. Reception to follow at "Lu" and Hoppy's residence in Steilacoom.

Alice Scheurer

RAPID CITY — Alice Scheurer, 67, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Dale Scheurer, Rapid City; one daughter, Sandra Fairbrother, Kearney, Neb.; two sons, Steve Scheurer and Stan Scheurer, both of Rapid City; her mother, Gladys Wilson, Rapid City; one sister, Alta Roberts, Rapid City; and seven grandchildren.

Connie R. Grenstiner

DEADWOOD — Connie R. Grenstiner, 49, Deadwood, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Edwin R. Grenstiner, Deadwood; one son, Jason Edwin Grenstiner, Deadwood; two daughters, Brandi Leigh Grenstiner-Hamilton and Lacey Anne Grenstiner, both of Deadwood; her parents, Gerald "Mike" and Elaine Porter, Deadwood; one brother, Jerry Porter, Lead; one sister, Shary Porter, Deadwood; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, and one hour before services, which will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.

Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Deadwood.

Thomas Herbert Tefertiller

SUNDANCE, Wyo. — Thomas Herbert Tefertiller, 72, Sundance, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, March 21, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and one hour prior to

services at the chapel at Fort Meade on Wednesday.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Historic Fort Meade Chapel, with Chaplain Moe Greiner officiating. Burial with military honors follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

"Herb" was born May 23, 1928, at Noble, Okla., to Thomas Howard and Pearl (Brown) Tefertiller. He attended various schools until he went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad. On September 11, 1948, he joined the Navy and served his country

until his honorable discharge in 1950. In December of 1950, he married Loreen Scotton at Wellington, Kan. Then he began a lifelong career in the drilling industry, encompassing oil, exploration and water wells.

He married Alta Sullivan in September of 1985 in Spearfish. The couple resided in Sundance for the last 10 years, where Herb enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and antique restoration of clocks and furniture.

Survivors include his wife, Alta Tefertiller, Sundance; one daughter, Diana Smith, and her husband, Richard, Aspen Park, Colo.; son Terry Tefertiller and his wife, Stacy, Evergreen, Colo., son Greg Tefertiller and his wife, Lauri, Spearfish; stepson Wayne Sullivan, Farmington, Ark.; stepdaughter Lori Glenn and her husband, Bobby, Gillette, Wyo.; stepdaughter Terri Sue Carney and her husband, Jim, Farmington, Ark.; three sisters, May Shivers and her husband, Gerald, Norman, Okla., June Cypert and her husband, Lee, Purcell, Okla., and Sylvia McPherson and her husband, Gene, Norman, Okla.,; also 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 34 years, Loreen; brothers Claude and Ray; sisters Mabel, Goldie and Margaret; and one granddaughter, Jessie Lynn Tefertiller.

A memorial has been established.

Robert Price

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, Mont. — Robert Price, 83, White Sulphur Springs, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at White Sulphur Springs.

Survivors include one son, Sumner Price, Mountain Home, Idaho; two daughters, Miriam Barth, White Sulphur Springs, and Adrienne Price, Pahrump, Nev.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

John R. Corey

RAPID CITY — John R. Corey, 79, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Williams, Rapid City; two sons, John Corey, Onawa, Iowa, and Robert Corey, Sioux City, Iowa; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Darlene.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.

Helen Conklin

PIERRE — Helen Conklin, 86, Pierre and formerly of Midland, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at Maryhouse Sub Acute Center in Pierre.

Survivors include her son, Jerry of Pierre; one daughter, Mary Ann of Fort Pierre; one sister, Ruth Gravel of Alabama; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre. Services will be at 2 p.m. CST Tuesday, March 20, at Midland Cemetery in Midland.
