Howard Kelley

RAPID CITY - Howard Kelley, 80, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at his home following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2001, at First Baptist Church, 707 St. Patrick St., in Rapid City, with the Rev. Truman Sproles and the Rev. Arthur Johns officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Rooks & Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Howard was born March 1, 1921, at Norwood, Mo., to William Jacob and Iva Maude (Nall) Kelley. His family moved to the Black Hills, settling in the Deadwood area, where Howard was raised and graduated from high school.

He enlisted in the Army and attended Radio School at Kansas City, Mo., followed by radar training at Murphy Island, Fla., New Orleans, La., and Cramwell, England. He was a member of the 878 Signal Corps Unit, specializing in IFF equipment. The mobile unit was attached to the Air Corps (now Air Force) and followed the 1st Army in its sector. Howard received various decorations and citations during his military service and was honorably discharged.

Howard married Louise Scott on March 1, 1961. He had a long career with the U.S. Forest Service, serving in various capacities on district forests and the Black Hills National Forest Supervisory Office in Custer.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Rapid City and an associate member of Bellevue Heights Church, American Baptist in Sun City, Ariz., where they lived during the winter months.

Survivors include his wife, Louise; two sisters, Hazel Roberts, Santa Paula, Calif., and Edith Crippen, Glendale, Ariz.; and one brother, Robert W. Kelley of Rapid City. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Floyd Carl and Lyle Tipton.

Memorial gifts may be designated to the American Lung Association, American Heart Association and Hospice of the Hills.

Francis Holden

WINNER - Francis Holden, 90, Winner, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Winner Regional Healthcare Center.

Survivors include his children, Mary Allan, Jerome, Idaho, Betty Littau, Oregon City, Ore., Jack Holden, Armore, Okla., Bill Holden, Belvidere, Ill., and Linda Schilling, Oregon City; and a sister, Marie Foster.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner. Burial will be at Colome Cemetery in Colome.

Donald Kaiser

SPEARFISH - Donald Kaiser, 71, Spearfish, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Kaiser, Spearfish; his children, Daniel Kaiser, Dick Kaiser, Donnelle Culver, Donnalee Smith, and Doug Kaiser, all of Spearfish.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

David Tracy

RAPID CITY - David Tracy, 40, Rapid City, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Tracy, Rapid City; a daughter, Nicolette Tracy, Rapid City; his father, Roy Tracy, Moore, S.C.; grand-father, C.W. Brewton, Conroe, Texas; a brother, Howard Tracy, Lubbock, Texas; and two sisters, Barbara Wheeler, Charlotte, N.C., and Teresa Burton, Spartanburg, S.C.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks & Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Barbara Dvorak

PIERRE - Barbara Dvorak, 79, Pierre, formerly of Winner, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Sub Acute Care Center in Pierre.

Survivors include her daughter, Lois Docken, Pierre; two sons, Ed Dvorak, Frazier Park, Calif., and Ken Dvorak, Fort Pierre; three sisters, Olga Ehlers, Waco, Neb., Selma Alcorn, Redding, Calif., and Verona Price, Auburn, Calif.; four brothers, Bill Walters, Burke, Hank Walters, Joshua Tree, Calif., Carl Walters, Fort Pierre, and Harold Walters, Tustin, Calif.; four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Winner United Methodist Church in Winner, with the Rev. Ross Reinhiller officiating. Burial will be at Winner City Cemetery.

Hofmeister Chapels of Pierre is in charge of arrangements.

Donimic Janis

EAGLE BUTTE - The services and burial have been changed for Donimic "Mickey" Lorenzo Janis, 59, Eagle Butte, whose obituary was on the Journal Web site Friday.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Cherry Creek Gym in Cherry Creek.

Burial will be at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cemetery in Cherry Creek.

Hildor R. Peterson

RAPID CITY - Hildor R. Peterson, 67, Rapid City, died of cancer Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Custer Community Hospital.

Hildor Roberta Emma Bietz was born June 20, 1933, at Kaylor, to Emil and Emma (Winters) Bietz.

She attended school in South Dakota and Minnesota.

She married Melvin Jerke on Dec. 27, 1951, at Parkston. He died in 1967. They lived in Mitchell, Nebraska and Kansas, and moved to Rapid City in 1965.

While living in Mitchell, she worked at Snow's Ice Cream Parlor.

She married John Peterson on April 20, 1969, in Rapid City.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband, John Peterson; three daughters, Kathryn Derry and her husband, Craig, Patricia Tschetter and her husband, James, Brenda Graham and her husband, Chris, all of Rapid City; five grandchildren; one stepson, Kavin Peterson and his wife, Diane, of California; stepdaughter-in-law, Marilyn Peterson of Minnesota; four stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Hubert Bietz and Leland Bietz of Rapid City; and a sister, Priscilla Olsen of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her first husband; her parents; a sister, Darlene, in infancy; and a stepson, Rick.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2001, at Behrens Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Duane Duley officiating.

Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Lula McLaughlin

PIERRE - Lula McLaughlin, 93, Pierre, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Maryhouse Nursing Care Center in Pierre.

Survivors include her son, Willis McLaughlin, Pierre; a daughter, Beverly Griffith, Rapid City; a brother, Harrold Smith, Vivian; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, at Vivian City Cemetery.

Hofmeister Chapels in Pierre is in charge of arrangements.

Bertha Helen Bell

SPEARFISH - Bertha Helen Bell, 101, longtime Spearfish resident, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility, Spearfish.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2001, at United Methodist Church, Spearfish, with the Rev. Kip Roozen and the Rev. Peter Moe, Rapid City, officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Spearfish.

Mrs. Bell was born Sept. 23, 1899, in Antelope Creek, Morton County, N.D., to Charles and Rose (Heil) Stoller. She grew up in North Dakota and attended rural schools there. When she was a young lady, she enjoyed dancing and often danced to Lawrence Welk and his band.

On July 4, 1915, she married Guy Pierce Bell in McIntosh. The couple lived in Elgin, N.D., until 1931, when they moved to Spearfish. She remained in Spearfish for 70 years.

Mrs. Bell had a life span that touched three centuries; she saw many changes in that time. She was very fortunate to have lived in her home past her 100th birthday. Her family totaled 101 descendants, at her age of 101.

Mrs. Bell was a member of Spearfish Senior Citizens Center and was one of the first members of the Happy Times Band and the chorus. She continued playing with the band through February of this year. She was a member of United Methodist Church, Spearfish. She enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens. For over 50 years, she participated in the Black Hills Passion Play and was a loyal, enthusiastic fan of the L.A. Dodgers.

Survivors include three daughters, Ruby Thomas, Garnette (and Lyle) Ainsworth, and Sonya (and Augie) Albers; and two sons, Tom Bell and Roger Bell, all of Spearfish; two daughters-in-law, Bobbie Bell and Betty Bell, both of Spearfish; one sister, Violet Lund Hansen, Kalispell, Mont.; 21 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, LeRoy (Bud) Bell and Doug Bell; and eight sisters and brothers.

A memorial has been established for the United Methodist Church, Spearfish.

Mrs. Bell's children wish to extend grateful thanks for the special loving care given to their mother by Dr. Roderick McVeety; and her granddaughter, LeeAnn Bell, RN. This expression of tenderness will be remembered always.

Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish, has been entrusted with arrangements.

Robert E. Britton

HOT SPRINGS - Robert E. Britton, 76, Hot Springs, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Hot Springs Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Britton, Hot Springs; a son, Richard Britton, Hot Springs; two brothers, John "Richard" Britton, rural Hot Springs, and Charles Britton, Buffalo Gap; a sister, Karen McCleery, Rapid City; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at Rooks, Isburg, McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Rooks, Isburg, McColley's Chapel of the Hills, with the Rev. Peter Dahlberg officiating.

Burial will be at Buffalo Gap Cemetery in Buffalo Gap.

Josephine A. Denton

DUPREE - Josephine A. Denton, 84, Dupree, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Hillcrest Care Center in Hettinger, N.D.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Erdman, Ralph; four sons, James Denton, New Baden, Ill., Robert Denton, Mineral Wells, Texas, Galen Denton, Dupree, and Monte Denton, Waseca, Minn.; a sister, Rose Griffith, Rapid City; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dupree, with a rosary service at 7 p.m., and one hour before services at the church on Saturday, March 17.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dupree, with the Rev. Anthony Kluckman, SCJ, officiating. Burial will be at Dupree Cemetery.

Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home of Hettinger is in charge of arrangements.

Donimic 'Mickey' Lorenzo Janis

EAGLE BUTTE - Donimic "Mickey" Lorenzo Janis, 59, Eagle Butte, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Lucinda Janis, Eagle Butte; a son, Vini Janis; a daughter, Rochilli Souksavath; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; five sisters, Ima Jean Stone Man, Gail Hawk, Dolinda Edmans, Edith Cope and Sharon; and eight brothers, Dicky Edmans, Gilbert Edmans Jr., Willy Bettelyoun, Alvin Bettelyoun, Gordon Bettelyoun, Tony Janis, Rodney Janis and Lamonie Janis.

A two-night wake begins Saturday, March 17, at HV Johnston Cultural Center in Eagle Butte and continues Sunday, March 18, at Oyate Center in Rapid City.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Oyate Center in Rapid City, with David Laysbad, Darrel New, Ernest Tail, Nathan Elk and Keith Rich officiating. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg is in charge of arrangements.
