Grace C. Hawk

LEWISTON, Idaho - Grace C. Hawk, 59, Lewiston, died Friday, March 2, in Lewiston.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Violet and Merlin Hawk, Lewiston; her children, Ron Hawk, Hamilton, Ohio, and Tonia Reed, Asotin; three grandchildren; two sisters, Bonita Austin, Lewiston, and Artis Owens, Cave Junction, Ore.; and a brother, Alvin Baker, McCall.

Services were held at Faith Tabernacle Church in Lewiston.

Lawrence Joseph Pekarek

HIGHMORE - Lawrence Joseph Pekarek, 70, Highmore, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Pekarek, Highmore; two daughters, Connie Dupont, Rapid City, and Kayleen Peterson, Winner; a son, Dan Pekarek, Highmore; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Leona Wade, Great Falls, Mont., Marion McCance, Gregory, and Shirley Garrigan, Highmore.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Luze Funeral Home in Highmore, with scripture services at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Highmore.

Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Highmore, with the Rev. John Short officiating.

Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Highmore.

A.C. Ettswold

LETCHER - A.C. Ettswold, 81, Letcher, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in Naples, Fla.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Ettswold, Letcher; four children, Diana Campbell, Pierre, Delores Mutziger, Savage, Minn., Polly Von Eschen, Rockford, Mich., and Bus Ettswold, Letcher; a sister, Helen DeMott, Virginia Beach, Va.; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Letcher.

Burial, with military rites, will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

Bertha Helen Bell

SPEARFISH - Bertha Helen Bell, 101, Spearfish, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Survivors include three daughters, Ruby Thomas, Garnette Ainsworth, and Sonya Albers, all of Spearfish; and two sons, Tom Bell and Roger Bell, both of Spearfish.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

Charles 'Pete' Wilson

BUENA PARK, Calif. - Charles "Pete" Wilson, 77, formerly of Rapid City, died March 6 of a heart attack at his home in Buena Park, Calif. He was born May 19, 1923, at the family ranch at Elm Springs, S.D., to Robert and Mabel (Bowman) Wilson. He attended grade school in the Elm Springs community and graduated from Wasta High School.

He entered the U.S. Army, where he served during WWII in both the Philippines and Japan. After the war, Pete returned briefly to the ranch but soon moved to Denver, where he attended refrigeration school.

He married Dolores VanTilborg in Cawker City, Kan., on Nov. 27, 1949. Their son, Charles, was born in Denver. They moved to Rapid City in 1950, where two daughters were born. He worked for the South Dakota Cement Plant for 16 years.

The family moved in 1966 to Buena Park, where Pete worked for Douglas Aircraft Co. until his retirement in 1992.

Survivors include Dolores, his wife of 51 years, Buena Park; a son, Charles Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Parker, Colo.; two daughters, Sharlene Coury of Trabuco Canyon, and Donna Puglisi and her husband, Gerry, of Dana Point; four grandchildren, Shannon of Riverside, Nicole Wilson of Parker, Colo., Forrest and Benjamin Coury of Trabuco Canyon; one great-granddaughter, Kaylynn Escamilla of Riverside; his sister, Mildred Radeleff of Pomona; one brother, Jack Wilson, and his wife, Mary, of Piedmont, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Mary Meredith; and two brothers, Gerald and Harold.

Memorial services were held Saturday, March 10, at Calvary Chapel at Capistrano Beach.

Orville E. Leighty

RAPID CITY - Orville E. Leighty, 81, Rapid City, died Tuesday, March 19, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Orville was born Feb. 25, 1920, at Highmore, the son of Earl and Della (Reisner) Leighty. He moved to Seneca, with his family as a young boy, graduating from Seneca High School in 1940. Orville married Lucille Hanson in 1940, and they lived in Seattle, Huron, Seneca and Faulkton. In 1978, they retired from Bachmayer Lumber Co., moving to Rochford, and built their own home. They lived there until 1983, moving to Rapid City in 1983. They spent winters in Mesa, Ariz. Lucille preceded Orville in death in 1988.

In 1989, Orville married Inez Boettcher. They lived in Rapid City, spending their winters in Mesa, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife, Inez Leighty, Rapid City; two sons, Ron Leighty and his wife, Toni, Rapid City, and Barry Leighty and his wife, Gloria, Golden, Colo.; a sister, Deloris Van Erem, Lennox; four grandchildren, Brook Leighty and his wife, Jenny, Rapid City, Kirby Leighty and his wife, Kerry, Chandler, Ariz., Rob Leighty and his wife, Tiffany, Aurora, Colo., and Melissa Mitchell and her husband, Butch, Aurora, Colo.; six great-grandchildren; and stepchildren, Al Lorenz and his wife, Nancy, Fountain Springs, Ariz., Dave Sebring and his wife, Linda, Mesa, Ariz., Bill Boettcher and his wife, Roxie, Missoula, Mont., and Bob Boettcher, Wheatland, Wyo.

Orville was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Lucille.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, March 18 at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 19 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Randy Cross officiating.

Burial, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273, will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Harvey J. Brunner

HILL CITY - Harvey J. Brunner, 87, Hill City, died at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Custer on Tuesday, March 13, 2001.

He was born on Aug. 19, 1913, at Sabatha, Kan., the son of Gottlieb and Lucinda (Minger) Brunner.

On April 18, 1936, he married Marguerite Smith in Orange City, Iowa, and moved to Hudson, where they made their home for the next 27 years. While living in Hudson, Harvey owned a blacksmith and machine shop, served as a volunteer fireman and enjoyed coon hunting.

In 1963, he and Marguerite moved to the Black Hills and eventually settled on a small ranch east of Keystone, where they raised horses and cattle. In addition, Harvey continued to shoe horses, volunteer with the Hayward Fire Department and guide trail rides. From 1982 to 1984, he taught blacksmithing as a participant in a special program through the University of South Dakota at Vermillion.

Harvey and his wife retired to the HillYo Apartments in 1995 in Hill City, where he resided until 1999. Since that time, he had lived at Colonial Manor in Custer.

He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge for 55 years, belonging to the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry in Yankton, the Hudson Masonic Lodge, the Mount Aetna Lodge 128 in Keystone and NAJA Cowboys in the NAJA Temple in Deadwood.

Respected for his talent at the forge, Harvey held a lifetime honorary membership in the Dakota Artist Blacksmith's Association. He loved to ride horseback all of his life and enjoyed memberships with both the Custer Trail Ride Association and the Buckaroos until last year.

Survivors include two sons, Howard G. Brunner and his wife, Sharon, Hill City, and James Brunner, Custer; six grandchildren, Jan Beeman, Martin Brunner, James Brunner, Erin Brunner, Ronda Sherman and Gary Lytle; two sisters, Sarah Volmer, Tennessee, and Nettie Kopp, Fairview, Kan.; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marguerite on Nov. 25, 1997; five brothers; and one sister.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, March 16, at United Church of Christ in Keystone, with the Rev. Barbara Gammeter officiating.

Burial will be at Keystone Cemetery.

All Western South Dakota Buckaroos are considered honorary pallbearers.

A memorial has been established.

Orville E. Leighty

RAPID CITY - Orville E. Leighty, 81, Rapid City, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Inez Leighty, Rapid City; two sons, Ron Leighty, Rapid City, and Barry Leighty, Golden, Colo.; a sister, Delores Van Erem, Lennox; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Stanley G. Cosgrove

RAPID CITY - Stanley G. Cosgrove, 62, Rapid City, passed away after a long illness of cancer on Monday, March 12, 2001, at his home in Rapid City.

He was born in Rapid City on Sept. 10, 1938, and remained here most of his life.

He joined the United States Air Force in 1956 and was discharged in 1960. He was a firefighter for the Rapid City Fire Department for 29-1/2 years, retiring as a captain.

He was a member of First Church of God in Rapid City.

He married Gloria Work on Dec. 8, 1962.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Cosgrove, Rapid City; one son, Rick Cosgrove and his wife, Julie, and one daughter, Dawn Sterling and her husband, Rodney, all of Rapid City; two grandchildren, Nickolas and Alexandra Sterling, Rapid City; one brother, Jerry Cosgrove of Frisco, Calif.; four sisters, Sybil Cunningham and her husband, John, and Millie Johnson and her husband, Ralph, all of Rockford, Ill., Joan Wolfe and her husband, Russ, of Cannon City, Colo., and Marjorie DeWard of Tucson, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Les Renner of Rapid City; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces, and wonderful friends and church family.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Stanley Cosgrove II; one brother, Archie Cosgrove Jr.; one sister, Eva Renner; and his father and mother, Archie and Ruby Cosgrove.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Behrens Mortuary.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2001, at Behrens Mortuary Chapel, with Rev. Norman Middleton officiating.

Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Honor Guard.

A memorial has been established to First Church of God.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Hugh L. Hafner

BISON - Hugh L. Hafner, 90, Bison, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Hettinger Hospital in Hettinger, N.D.

Survivors include his wife, Stella Hafner, Bison; four children, Orein Hafner, Joann Aaker, Don Hafner and Clyde Hafner; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three brothers, LeRoy Hafner, Carthage, Tenn., Norman Hafner, Bishop, Calif., and Wayne Hafner, Butte, Mont.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon and before services in Bison.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at Bison American Lutheran Church in Bison, with the Rev. Lance Yohe officiating. Burial will be at Bison Cemetery.
