Joseph Engebretson

RAPID CITY - Joseph Engebretson, 46, of Rapid City, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He was born on Nov. 23, 1954, in Milbank, to Vernon and Agnes (Lieffort) Engebretson. Joe graduated from Milbank High School and entered the Air Force in 1975. He was a security officer in the Air Force and received an honorable discharge in 1979. He had been employed in the S.D. National Guard in several positions, the last being Pay Voucher Examiner. His Guard family was very important to him and his wife.

In 1989, he married Heidi Hoffman, his soul mate, who was fortunate enough to share the past 12 years with him. In 1994, their lives were blessed with the adoption of their lovely daughter, Kiah. Joe was a devoted and loving husband, "Daddy," son and brother. His family was the center of his existence and the love of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Heidi Engebretson, and daughter, Kiah, of Rapid City; mother, Agnes Engebretson of Milbank; sister, Mary Spellman of Dixon, Ill.; sister-in-law, Leslie Engebretson of Omaha, Neb.; close family member, Jeanne Lacher of Devils Lake, N.D.; and numerous nieces, nephews and many loving friends.

In life, Joe touched many souls with his fun-loving ways; and in death, he gave the gift of life to many others through the donation of his organs.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15 at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 16, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Rapid City, with Rev. Michel Mulloy presiding.

Inurnment will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 19, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by the South Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. Friends may gather at the funeral home on Monday for the 9:15 a.m. procession to the cemetery.

The family has established a memorial fund for his daughter Kiah's education.

Harvey J. Brunner

HILL CITY - Harvey J. Brunner, 87, Hill City, died at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Custer on Tuesday, March 13, 2001.

He was born on Aug. 19, 1913, at Sabatha, Kan., the son of Gottlieb and Lucinda (Minger) Brunner.

On April 18, 1936, he married Marguerite Smith in Orange City, Iowa, and moved to Hudson, where they made their home for the next 27 years. While living in Hudson, Harvey owned a blacksmith and machine shop, served as a volunteer fireman, and enjoyed coon hunting.

In 1963, he and Marguerite moved to the Black Hills and eventually settled on a small ranch east of Keystone, where they raised horses and cattle. In addition, Harvey continued to show horses, volunteer with the Hayward Fire Department and guide trail rides. Between 1982 and 1984, he taught blacksmithing as a participant in a special program through the University of South Dakota at Vermillion.

Harvey and his wife retired to the HillYo Apartments in 1995 in Hill City, where he resided until 1999. Since that time he had lived at Colonial Manor in Custer.

He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge for 55 years, belonging to the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry in Yankton, the Hudson Masonic Lodge, the Mount Aetna Lodge 128 in Keystone and NAJA Cowboys in the NAJA Temple in Deadwood.

Respected for his talent at the forge, Harvey held a lifetime honorary membership in the Dakota Artist Blacksmith's Association. He loved to ride horseback all of his life and enjoyed memberships with both the Custer Trail Ride Association and the Buckaroos until last year.

Survivors include two sons, Howard G. Brunner and his wife, Sharon, Hill City, and James Brunner, Custer; six grandchildren, Jan Beeman, Martin Brunner, James Brunner, Erin Brunner, Ronda Sherman and Gary Lytle; two sisters, Sarah Volmer, Tennessee, and Nettie Kopp, Fairview, Kan.; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marguerite on Nov. 25, 1997; five brothers; and one sister.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at United Church of Christ in Keystone, with Rev. Barbara Gammeter officiating.

Burial will be at Keystone Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Charles W. Sharp

RAPID CITY - Charles W. Sharp, Rapid City, 71, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Charles was born Aug. 17, 1929, at White River to Les and Helen (White) Sharp. As a young child, he was raised by his grandmother, Minnie Sharp, and his uncle and aunt, Dwight and Dolores Sharp of Long Valley. He attended school at White River, Long Valley and Fort Morgan, Colo.

He married Verna Mae Terkildsen on Jan. 26, 1951. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past January.

Charles was called into the Army during the Korean Conflict, and he served his country with pride. He received the Korean Service Medal, with two Bronze Service Stars, Combat Infantry Badge and UN Service Medal. After his honorable discharge, he moved his family from Long Valley to Rapid City. There he drove gas-transport trucks for Johnston Fuel Liners, Ruan Transport and hauled cattle for Ralph Neff Trucking. He had his own business, Chuck's Truck Service, for five years, and then was employed as a mechanic for Barber Transportation where he retired from the Teamsters Union. He then opened Sharp's Auction for seven years and owned and operated the Town and Country 2nd Hand store in Kadoka, until he was forced to retire due to illness in 1999. Charles enjoyed fishing and, in earlier years, camping in the back of a pickup truck with his family and friends, and teaching his kids to water ski at Angostura. He could do anything whether it was mechanics, wiring, carpentry, plumbing, etc. He taught NRA Gun Safety for several years.

He drove many miles without an accident.

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1273 of Rapid City, member of South Park United Church of Christ, member of the NRA.

He is survived by his wife, Verna Mae Sharp of Rapid City; his mother, Helen Halligan of Fort Morgan, Colo.; one son, Doug Sharp of Rapid City; three daughters, Debi Collins and her husband, Ross, Robin Muir and her husband, Rick Muir, and Sheri Muir, all of Rapid City; and his cherished grandchildren, Chuck, Cne', Wyatt, Jacob, Lance, Chad, Clay, Jessie, Brittany, Nick, Tim and Dani; five sisters, Darlene Landburg and her husband, Ed, Janie Bowers, Pam Vancil and her husband, John, Doris Kissler and her husband, Dave, all of Colorado, and Wanda Altergott and her husband, Fred of Tucson, Ariz.; one brother, Gary Sharp and his wife, Marie of Denver; and his special aunts, Dolores Sharp and Vi Marlow; and a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Chuck, in 1978; his precious grandson, Jamie, in 1993; his father; one sister, Sharon; and a brother, Donnie.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Behrens Mortuary.

Funeral services will be Thursday, March 15, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at South Park United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Bruce Herrboldt officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1273 of Rapid City will provide military honors.

Stanley G. Cosgrove

RAPID CITY - Stanley G. Cosgrove, 62, Rapid City, passed away after a long illness of cancer on Monday, March 12, 2001, at his home in Rapid City.

He was born in Rapid City on Sept. 10, 1938, and remained here most of his life.

He joined the United States Air Force in 1956 and was discharged in 1960. He was a firefighter for the Rapid City Fire Department for 29-1/2 years, retiring as captain.

He was a member of the First Church of God in Rapid City.

He married Gloria Work on Dec. 8, 1962.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Cosgrove, Rapid City; one son, Rick Cosgrove, and one daughter, Dawn Sterling, both of Rapid City; one brother, Jerry Cosgrove of Frisco, Calif.; four sisters, Sybil Cunningham and her husband, John, Millie Johnson and her husband, Ralph, all of Rockford, Ill., Joan Wolfe and her husband, Russ of Cannon City, Colo.; Marjorie DeWard of Tucson, Ariz., and brother-in-law, Les Renner of Rapid City; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces; and wonderful friends and church family.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Stanley Cosgrove II; one brother, Archie Cosgrove Jr.; one sister, Eva Renner; his father and mother, Archie and Ruby Cosgrove.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Behrens Mortuary.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2001, at Behrens Mortuary Chapel, with Rev. Norman Middleton.

Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Military honors will be provided with the Sturgis Honor Guard.

Memorial has been established to First Church of God.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

A.L. 'Red' Mutchler

RAPID CITY - A.L. "Red" Mutchler, 79, died March 12, 2001, at a local nursing home.

He was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Yankton County to Roy and Amelia (Kremer) Mutchler. When he was a small boy, his family moved to a ranch on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. The family later returned to a farm near Yankton.

He came to Rapid City in 1941 and worked in the parts department for Black Hills Oldsmobile-Cadillac.

He married Mary Slowey in Yankton on Jan. 17, 1942. They lived in Rapid City until he entered the U.S. Army.

He was a combat veteran of World War II, serving in Africa and Italy for two years. His military record includes nine Battle Stars and two Presidential Unit citations.

After being discharged in August 1945, he returned to Rapid City and continued to be employed by Black Hills Oldsmobile.

In 1948, he bought the ninth and Main Mobile station in Rapid City, which he operated until 1952. In 1953, he bought the Carter Oil station at Third and St. Joseph streets. In 1955, he sold the stations and was employed as a special agent for New York Life Insurance Co. He was a top producer in the local agency for 22 years, retiring in 1977.

He was Post Commander of Rushmore VFW Post 1273 in Rapid City in 1949 and 1950. He was active for many years in the operations of the VFW. He was a life member since 1950 of the local Moose Lodge. He served on the Rapid City Zoning Board of Appeals for 12 years, being reappointed by the various mayors. As his young sons were growing, he was active in Cub and Boy Scouts, always the cook for their many outings.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Mutchler; their four children, Robert, and his wife, Brenda, of Loveland, Colo., Mary Jane Ryan, and her husband, Gerry, of Helena, Mont., Rita Hyk, and her husband, Stephen, of Rapid City, and Thomas, and his wife, Laura, of Billings, Mont.; seven grandchildren; his sister, Shirley Stec, Rapid City; and an aunt, Dorothy (Mutchler) Chambers, Casper, Wyo.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilfred "Pete" Mutchler and Harold Mutchler.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Rev. Brian Christensen officiating.

Burial, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273, will be at Black Hills National Cemetery. A memorial has been established.

Carolyn Rosemary Ruff

ALEXANDREA, Minn. - Carolyn Rosemary Ruff, 74, Alexandrea, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandrea.

Survivors include two sons, Timothy Roy Ruff, Missoula, Mont., and Steven George Ruff, Coon Rapids, Minn.; a granddaughter; a sister, Betty Helmer, Belle Fourche; and a stepsister, Helen Stearns, Belle Fourche.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, March 16, at Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 16, at First Congregation Church in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Buck Malone officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.

Joseph E. Engebretson

RAPID CITY - Joseph E. Engebretson, 46, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Heidi Engebretson, Rapid City; a daughter, Kiah Engebretson, Rapid City; his mother, Agnes Engebretson, Milbank; and a sister, Mary Spellman, Dixon, Ill.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Christina Martinez

WOUNDED KNEE - Christina Martinez, 73, Wounded Knee, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Meadowbrook Manor in Rapid City.

Survivors include a son, Leonard Martinez, Wounded Knee; two daughters, Daisy Rouillard and Annabelle Martinez, both of Wounded Knee; two sisters, Lavina Gay, Wounded Knee, and Martha American Horse, Gordon, Neb.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A two-night wake service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wounded Knee.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 16, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wounded Knee, with the Rev. Daniel Makes Good officiating. Burial will be at Mediator Episcopal Cemetery in Kyle.
