BLACK HAWK - Vera V. Miller, 76, Black Hawk, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Miller, Black Hawk; a son, Richard Marston, Black Hawk; a daughter, Linda Niemi, Cody, Wyo.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

No services are planned.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Nadine L. Barton

SAN DIEGO - Nadine L. Barton, 93, San Diego, and formerly of Moorcroft, Wyo., died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, in San Diego.

Survivors include her husband, John Barton; four grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at Moorcroft Christian School in Moorcroft, Wyo., with Randall Blakeman officiating. Burial will follow at Moorcroft Cemetery.

Gladys A. Nelson

GILLETTE, Wyo. - Gladys A. Nelson, 85, Gillette, Wyo., formerly of Spearfish, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Nelson, Evanston, Wyo., and Sara Delahoyde, Gillette, Wyo.; a son, Bruce Nelson, Gillette, Wyo.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Gertrude Evans, Pierre; and a brother, Richard Nelson, Vale, Ore.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 15, at United Church of Christ in Spearfish, with the Rev. Mel Miller officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Dean L. Merkwan

MITCHELL — Dean L. Merkwan, 57, Mitchell, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at his home in Mitchell.

He was born Jan. 25, 1944, in Tyndall, to Steve and Ella (Vilhauer) Merkwan. In December 2000, he had his leg amputated because of diabetes complications. He received an artificial leg on March 6, 2001. Dean died March 8, 2001, at his home at the age of 57 years, one month and 14 days.

Dean graduated in 1962 from Avon High School, where he was chosen homecoming king his senior year. He was very active in all sports, band and chorus. After high school graduation, he attended Dakota Wesleyan University at Mitchell, where he was an outstanding football player. After graduation, he worked at Hormel, sold insurance and was employed at a grocery store and hardware store. Dean was named to the all-tournament team as first baseman at the 1973 South Dakota State Amateur Baseball Tournament in Yankton. He loved sports, especially baseball. He was given a lifetime pass to the State amateur baseball games in 1988.

Dean married Nina Bechtold on June 25, 1965. Two daughters were born to this union.

Dean married Sally Tschetter on Jan. 2, 1979, at Mitchell. A son and daughter were born to this union.

Dean was a big supporter of lots of sports, liked to travel, had an interest in old cars, was a great handyman and enjoyed working with wood. He was very devoted to his family. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mitchell.

Thankful for having shared his life are his wife, Sally, of Mitchell; his children: Trisha and husband Alan Javers of Sioux Falls, Travis, a student at North Dakota State, Fargo, N.D., Tara, at home; three grandchildren, Dustin, Spencer and Landon Javers of Sioux Falls; one sister, Betty Lou Harmacek of Avon; one brother, Gary Merkwan and wife Twila of Pierre; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, brother-in-law and mother-in-law.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Bittner Funeral Chapel, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, at the First Presbyterian Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.

Nilda Budmayr

BELLE FOURCHE — Nilda Budmayr, 51, Belle Fourche, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Leslie Budmayr, Belle Fourche; two daughters, Jennifer Lynn Galloway Budmayr and Amber Eileen Budmayr, both of Belle Fourche; one son, Justin Miles Budmayr, Sarasota, Fla.; her father, Battista Gianino, Boyes, Mont.; one sister, Wende Gianino, Boyes; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.

Ilene Mae (Simmons) Sokol

CUSTER — Ilene Mae (Simmons) Sokol, 61, Custer, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at her home in Custer.

She was born Oct. 13, 1939, in Parkston to Joe and Frances Simmons. She attended high school in New Underwood. Ilene worked for the U.S. Army National Guard for 30 years. She married Bob Sokol on the 21st of August, 1993, at Custer Community Church. Ilene enjoyed the outdoors and hiking in the Black Hills, traveling and fishing.

Her survivors include her husband, Bob Sokol, Custer; two sons, Loren DeGeest, Rapid City, and Scott DeGeest, Denver; one daughter, Monica Foster, Seattle; two brothers, Clifford Simmons, New Underwood, and James Simmons, Williamsburg, Pa.; one sister, Joan Thorson, Keystone; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Tiffney and Kristopher DeGeest; and three step-grandchildren, Kristine, Hannah and Isaac Sokol.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Nadine Marie DeGeest; her parents, Joe and Frances Simmons; and brothers Donald and Duane Simmons.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 12, at Canyon Lake United Church of Christ in Rapid City, with the Rev. Lowell Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.

A memorial has been established to Hospice of Custer.

Rev. Gordon W. Goodsell

RAPID CITY — Rev. Gordon W. Goodsell, 83, Rapid City, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Goodsell, Rapid City; a son, Verne Goodsell, and his wife, Karen, Rapid City; three daughters, Janice Stanifer, and her husband, David, Adrian, Mich., Marilyn Goodsell, Eugene, Ore., and Carol Cavins, and her husband, Michael, Chelmsford, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, at the First Wesleyan Church, Rapid City, with Rev. Glenn Wessel and Rev. Dale Wagner officiating. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Edward Morris Bruce

BLACK HAWK — Edward Morris Bruce, 89, Black Hawk, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at a local Rapid City nursing home.

Edward was born May 27, 1911, in Valentine, Neb. He later moved with his family to a Montana homestead. Edward married Bernice Perry in April 1938, in Baker, Mont. They lived in Baker and Miles City, Mont., before moving to the Black Hills. He farmed with his family and later on his own. He also owned and operated a repair business and later was employed as a pipeline welder for Montana Dakota Utilities for many years before retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Bruce, Black Hawk; four sons, Wayne Bruce, Black Hawk, Ronnie Bruce, Dexter, Mich., Doug Bruce, Black Hawk, and Barry and his wife, Faye Bruce, Black Hawk; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Bruce; parents, William and Barbara Bruce; three brothers, Clarence, Maynard and James; and one sister, Myrtle.

Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Behrens Mortuary. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 12, at Behrens Mortuary Chapel in Rapid City, with the Rev. Bruce Baum officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.

Edward's family wishes all memorials be sent to charities of your personal choice.

Gladys A. Nelson

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Gladys A. Nelson, 85, Gillette, and formerly of Spearfish, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include one son, Bruce Nelson, Gillette; two daughters, Sandra Nelson, Evanston, and Sara Delahoyde; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

Hans M. Hoeppner

PIERRE — Hans M. Hoepner, 84, Pierre, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at St. Mary's Health Center.

Arrangements are pending with Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre.

Madonna R. (Blue Horse) Beard

HERMOSA — Madonna R. (Blue Horse) Beard, 60, Hermosa, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Preston Beard, Puerta Vallarta, Mexico; a son, John Beard, Hermosa; two daughters, Rebecca Conca, Hermosa, and Joy Beard, Denver; and six grandchildren.

A one-night wake will begin at 5 p.m. Monday, March 12, at Mother Butler Center in Rapid City, with a rosary service at 7 p.m.

Traditional Lakota services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, at Mother Butler Center in Rapid City, with the Rev. Pat McCorkel officiating. Burial will be at Holy Rosary Mission Cemetery in Pine Ridge.

Sioux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William ‘Bill' Pettit

COLOME — William "Bill" Pettit, 58, Colome, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Gregory Community Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Delores Pettit, Colome; a daughter, Stacy Pettit, Colome; two sons, Shawn Pettit, Goodland, Kan., and Steven Pettit, Mesa, Ariz.; nine sisters, Mavis O'Bryan, Colome, Lyola Eckstaine, Mary Zimmerman and Tammy Pettit, all of Winner, Barbara Sell, Springview, Neb., Nancy Edwards, Anchorage, Alaska, Patty Wegenhaupt, Goodyear, Ariz., Carol

Herrmann, Mesa, and Dorothy Skrlant, Vermillion; two brothers, Gordon Pettit, Sydney, Neb., and Doug Pettit, Nebraska.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Immaculate Conception Church in Winner, with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, at the church. Burial will be in Winner Cemetery.

Theodore Robert Wilder

BLACK HAWK — Theodore Robert Wilder, 70, Black Hawk, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 9 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and Monday one hour prior to the services at Fort Meade.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 12, 2001, at 9 a.m. at the Historic Fort Meade Chapel, with Chaplain Paul Lupkes officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Theodore was born October 3, 1930, at Sioux City, Iowa, to Clifford and Edith (Jones) Wilder. He grew up in the Sioux City area. He married Jean Ann Hamilton at Sioux City on July 27, 1955. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served until his retirement in 1974 with the rank of M/Gy/Sgt.

Survivors include his former wife of 40 years, Jean Ann Wilder, Madison, Wis.; two daughters, Cyndy Lawler and her daughter, Elizabeth, Madison, Wis., and Leilani Schirmer and her husband, Jeffrey, and their children, Melissa and Brandon, Eagan, Minn.; son-in-law, Mark Miller, and his children, Charles, Patrick and Kislia, Richmond, Va.; special friend, Diane Crossman, Black Hawk; two brothers and their wives, Cliff and Penny Wilder, Calif., and Michael and Sandy Wilder, Iowa; and six sisters, Betty Benty, Wash., Lola Jean Albeck and her husband, Dean, Nikki Magnetti, Vicki Von Minden, and Nikki Jean Johnson and her husband, Rick, all of Iowa, and Tracy Sampson and her husband, Kevin, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Laura Jane Wilder Miller; and one brother, James.

A memorial has been established to the Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Jack Nelson

EDGEMONT — Jack Nelson passed away March 6, 2001, in Little Rock, Arkansas, while receiving treatment for Multiple Myeloma.

He was born in Longmont, Colo., October 6, 1939, to Margaret (Burns) and Ray L. Nelson. He grew up on the family irrigated farm, graduated from high school in Erie, Colo., and attended college at Colorado State University. Upon graduation in 1961, he married Virginia Emery of rural Custer, S,D,, on June 23, 1961. After farming in Colorado for a year, the Nelsons moved to Edgemont, South Dakota, where they spent the next 35 years raising their family and establishing Nelson's Oil & Gas, Inc., the family business his two sons operate to this date. In 1995, Jack and Ginger moved to a home near Rapid City. There, he enjoyed golfing, motorcycles, volunteer work driving the Naja Shrine Children's Hospital van to Minneapolis, and volunteering at the Pennington County Sheriff's Office.

He is survived by his wife, Ginger, sons Brian (Cyndi) and Richard (Stefanie) of Hot Springs, and five grandchildren, Andrew, Jennifer, Sarah, David and Adam, whom he dearly loved and enjoyed. He is also survived by one brother, Ralph, Longmont, Colo., and one sister, Geri Sarconi (Tony), Espanola, N.M.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Margaret (Burns) Nelson, of Longmont, Colo.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the United Churches in Edgemont, S.D., with the Rev. Marion Gray officiating.

The family requests donations to Jack Nelson Memorial Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers. Memorial donations can be sent to Isburg-McColley Chapel, 401 N. Garden, Hot Springs, SD 57747.
