Goldie Wiley
SANTEE, Neb. -- Goldie (Sister) Faye Redwing Wiley (Hekta Tunwanwin), 73, of Santee, Nebraska, journeyed to the Spirit World on Monday, February 7, 2005, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota.
Services will be Thursday, February 10, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at the Dakota Oyate Oyanke Community Center, in Santee, Nebraska, with Ron Thomas, Rick Thomas and Father David Titus officiating. The drum group will be Mato Pejuta, with grandsons, Redwing Thomas, Carlos John and Wakinyan Thomas. Burial will be in the Holy Faith Cemetery in Hobu Creek, on the Santee Sioux Nation Reservation.
Traditional Dakota Prayer Ceremonies and visitation will be Tuesday and Wednesday, February 8th and 9th at 7:00 p.m. at the Dakota Oyate Oyanke Community Center in Santee, Nebraska.
Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton is in charge of the arrangements.
Goldie was born June 20, 1931, in Santee, Nebraska, the daughter of Jessie and Lucy Lulu (Tuttle) Redwing. She received her education at the Santee Tribe Reservation School, Pierre Indian School and St. Mary's School for Indian Girls. She was a homemaker.
She married Robert L. Goulette in 1948, in Sioux City, Iowa, and to this union two children were born, Robert (Pat) Goulette of Wagner, SD and Thelma (Ron) Thomas of Santee, NE. She married Clifton F. Wiley in 1958, in Sioux City, Iowa. He died in December 1999. She adopted and raised her sister's sons Terry John and Robert Peterson. She was mom to nephews Larry and Ron Redwing, Eddie, Walter, Michael, and Lonnie John after the deaths of her brother and sister, Alex and Myrtle Redwing.
She was a member of the Santee Sioux Nation, a full blood Mdewakanton Dakota. She was the granddaughter of Alexander Redwing and the great-granddaughter of Dowansa, Mdewakanton Dakota Warriors, during the 1862 Sioux Up-Rising or otherwise known as the Dakota Conflict of 1862. She was the granddaughter of John and Ellen (Stone) Tuttle and great-granddaughter of Tawiyaka who survived the Tribal removal from Minnesota to Nebraska in 1866.
She is survived by four children: Robert (Pat) Goulette of Wagner, SD and Thelma (Ron) Thomas, Terry John, Robert Pederson all of Santee, NE; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren (12 boys and 3 girls); a sister, Mary Ellen Redwing Lakas of South Sioux City, NE; a special niece who she called little sister, Pat Redwing Halstead; her adopted sisters and brother, Martha Pike, Bernice Blakney and Robert Bickerstaff, Sr.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; four sisters (recently a sister Verna Wall); and a special grandson, Tony (Tatanka Cistina) Thomas.
Pallbearers will be James Star Comes Out, Robert Bickerstaff Jr., Melvin Pike, Robbie Goulette, David Halstead, Michael John, Jr., Darwin Rouillard, Tacanku Thomas and Devin Goulette. Honorary pallbearers are the Mato Wakan Wiwang Wacisapi, Dorothy Thomas, Marge Magnuson, Kitty Redwing, Delores Redwing, Alice Rouillard, Joyce Thomas, Edith Bickerstaff, Martha Thomas, Saunie Wilson, Wanda John, Germaine John and Tashina Denney.
Roger Albers
HARTINGTON, Neb. -- Roger Albers, age 73, of Hartington, Nebraska, died Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Beverly Healthcare Center in Hartington.
Funeral Services will be on Monday, February 14, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with the Rev. John Pietramale officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's Cemetery in Hartington, Nebraska
Visitation will be on Sunday, February 13th from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington with a rosary at 2:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Nicholas Bigner, Zachary Miller, John Buschelman, Todd Albers, Russ Albers, William Kalin II, DeWayne Kalin and Joey Kalin.
Roger was born on September 17, 1931, in Fordyce, Nebraska, to William Herman and Vera (Heitman) Albers. He grew up in the Fordyce and Hartington area and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1949. Roger worked for his dad on the farm prior to his marriage to Betty Kalin on October 20, 1953, in Hartington. He and Betty then bought a farm and lived there for almost 50 years. Roger has been a nursing home resident since October of 2003. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, perpetual adoration, Knights of Columbus. Roger did personal income tax returns for many people for over 30 years and also worked for the ASCS office in Hartington for 25 years. He loved traveling, camping, and dancing.
Survivors are his Wife, Betty of Hartington; Four Daughters and husbands: Debbie and Dr. James Tierney, Racine, Wisconsin; Denise and Kevin Miller, Chadron, NE; Cheryl and Barry Buschelman, North Liberty, Iowa; and Sheila and Dave Bigner, Sioux Falls, SD; 10 Granddaughters and 3 Grandsons; 2 Brothers and wives: Lloyd and Nellie Albers, West Union, Iowa; and Charles and Janet Albers, Hartington, NE; and 2 Sisters: MaryEllen Walker, Alexandria, VA; and Margaret Mary and husband Dennis Johnson, Volin, SD.
Preceded in death by his parents.
Agnes Hajek
TYNDALL -- Agnes Hajek, 90, of Tyndall, died Wednesday, February 9, 2005, at St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall.
Memorial service is 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 14, 2005, at United Methodist Church, Tyndall, South Dakota, with the Rev. Phil Lint officiating. Music will be provided by organist Diane Bryan and soloist the Rev. Mary-Lee Lint. Interment is in the Czech National Cemetery, Tyndall, South Dakota.
Agnes Adella Hajek was born on September 20, 1914, in Bon Homme County to John and Rose (Safranek) Chyba. She was married to Charles Hajek on April 5, 1934, at the home of Mrs. Anton Bambas, Charles' sister. Before her marriage, she was active in the Czech Organization and a leader in the Sokols in the ZCBJ Hall. The Sokol group performed at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1933. After Charles' death in 1972, Agnes worked for the Bon Homme County Sheriff's Department cooking meals for the prisoners and also worked on the election board.
Agnes was a member of the Tyndall United Methodist Women and the Senior Citizens. She loved to play cards, grow flowers, crochet afghans and bake hoska and apple strudels.
Arrangements are under the direction of Goglin-Kelley Funeral Home of Tyndall.
Agnes is survived by her daughter, Corinne Hajek and husband, Brian Scheuch of LaConner, Washington; two sons: Daryl Hajek of Henderson, Nevada and Dick Hajek and wife, Rita of Tyndall; eight grandchildren: Cary Hajek and wife, Dorothy of Tyndall, Teresa (Hajek) Carlson of Watertown, South Dakota, Mike Hajek and wife, Lori of Tyndall, Jim Hajek and wife, Lisa of Denver, Colorado, Jackie (Hajek) Davis and husband, Shay of Mitchell, South Dakota, Natalie (Herman) Wermus and husband, Chris of Bellingham, Washington, Ben Herman of LaConner, Washington and Chris Hajek of Las Vegas, Nevada; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers and a sister.
Theodore 'Ted' Fennema
AVON -- Theodore "Ted" Fennema, 88, of Avon died Thursday, February 10, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in Tyndall, SD.
A memorial gathering will be held Sunday, February 13, 2005, from 2-4 p.m. at the Avon American Legion Hall in Avon. Interment will be held at the Tyndall Cemetery in Tyndall, SD, at a later date.
Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel in Avon is in charge of arrangements.
Theodore "Ted" Fennema was born in rural Dante, South Dakota on May 23, 1916, the son of Garret and Gertie (Knoll) Fennema. He died Thursday, February 10, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Center in Tyndall, SD. Ted had attained the age of 88 years, eight months and 18 days.
Ted attended rural school in Charles Mix County and graduated from Avon High School in 1934. He graduated from Southern Normal Teachers College in Springfield with a BS in Education.
Ted served in the US Army Air Corps during WW II.
Ted married Margery Harding on March 10, 1947, in Lake Andes, SD. Ted taught school for a couple of years and then spent the rest of his life farming and raising cattle on the farmstead in the Avon/Dante area. He was very proud of his cattle.
Ted was a member of the Farmers Union, American Hereford Association and served on the board of the Avon Farmers Elevator and as Secretary of the Ft. Randall Hereford Association for many years.
Ted will be remembered for his enjoyment of playing ball in his younger years, bowling, playing pinochle, dancing, enjoying coffee with friends, family gatherings, writing, rhyming and attending cattle sales.
Thankful for having shared his life are his wife, Margery Fennema, of Avon; daughter, LuEllen and husband, Vennie Heibel, of Pierre; two sons: Gary and wife, Pam Fennema, of Avon and Gale Fennema, of Dante; seven grandchildren: Brett, Scott, Lee, Keith, Katie, Teddy and Marie; one sister, Grace Fennema of Dante; special friend, Louise Troll of Dante; and many friends.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Don and Pete.
Donna Stevens
HARTINGTON, Neb. -- Donna M. Stevens, age 80 of Hartington, NE died on Sunday, December 19, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington, NE with the Rev. John Pietramale officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's cemetery in Hartington, NE.
Visitation will be on Tuesday from 1:00 - 9:00 p.m. with a 2 p.m. rosary and a Vigil Service at 8:15 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, NE.
Donna Mary was born on August 15, 1924, in Hartington, NE to Andrew S. and Anna M. (Backman) Foulk. She grew up in Hartington and attended Hartington High School and worked for the cafe at the Hartington Hotel until moving to Sioux City, Iowa. Donna was a waitress for Green Gables and graduated from Edwards Business School. She began working for Hansen Glass and Paint. She was married on February 26, 1945, to Roger G. Lindberg in Hartington, NE. She and Roger then moved to Hartington where she worked for Tina's (Perk) New Time Dress Shop. She worked there until moving to Norfolk, NE in 1952. In Norfolk, Donna worked at Mary's Cafe and Silikes Dress Shop. She moved to Sioux City, Iowa in 1960 and worked for Wagner, Johnson & Rasmus Orthodontists for more than 25 years. Roger died in December 1962 at the age of 41. Her second marriage was to Anthony Stevens in 1971 in Las Vegas, NV. Anthony died on January 10, 1991, at the age of 78. Donna then moved back to Hartington in 1992.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and its Perpetual Adoration; she loved music, bowling, dancing, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by four children: Connie Dyer of Tampa, Florida; Vickie and husband, Norman Hoopingarner Jr., Sioux City, Iowa; Charles Lindberg, Tucson, Arizona; Sandy and husband Charles Xikes, Leigh Acres, Florida; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister and her husband, Delores and Harvey Summers, Hartington, NE; one brother and his wife, Chalmer and Irene Foulk, Hartington, NE; one niece, Pam Mohr, Sioux City, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Roger and Anthony and one sister, Blanche Burns.
Greg Hoch
TYNDALL -- Greg Hoch, 57, of Tyndall, died Monday (Jan. 10, 2005) at St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall.
Funeral mass is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Tyndall. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Visitation is from 1-5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel, Tyndall, followed by a wake service at 7:30 p.m. at the church.
James Hayward
TYNDALL -- James Hayward, 82, of Tyndall, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2005) at St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at the United Methodist Church, Tyndall.
Visitation is from 3-9 p.m. Thursday at the Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel, Tyndall. Visitation will resume from noon until time of service Friday at the church.
