Mary Urban
RAPID CITY - Mary was born May 17, 1918, to Charles and Caroline Moore at Highmore. She attended schools in Hyde County and graduated from Highmore High School in 1936. She worked for the State Highway Department in Pierre until 1939. She entered nurses training at St. Mary's School of Nursing in Pierre and graduated as an RN in 1942. She practiced nursing in Pierre and later in Rapid City.
She married Cecil Urban of Rapid City on July 3, 1943, and lived in Rapid City until 1950, when they moved to the Nemo area. She then retired from nursing. She devoted her life to caring for her family and those around her, and was deeply involved in hobbies and crafts.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil, on Nov. 7, 1995. She had lived in Rapid City since 1995. She is survived by her three children, Bill Urban, Nemo, James Urban, Manila, the Philippines, Sally Hernandez of Osceola, Ind., and her stepson, Kenneth Urban, Denver. She has 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three nieces and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held in Mary's honor at Nemo Community Church at 3 p.m. on Palm Sunday, April 8, 2001.
A memorial fund has been established for the Nemo Community Church.
Arrangements are with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
Lucille Skinner
GRANT, Neb. - Lucille Skinner, 91, Keith County, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant.
Survivors include one son, Leighton "Lee" Skinner, Rapid City; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Graveside memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 9, at Ogallala Cemetery, Ogallala, with the Rev. Ray Norris officiating.
Draucker Funeral Home, Ogallala, is in charge of arrangements.
Duane Good Voice Flute
OGLALA - Duane Good Voice Flute, 34, Oglala, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, in Oglala.
Survivors include his mother, Jeraldine Good Voice Flute; three brothers, Herman Good Voice Flute Jr., Bismarck, N.D., Abraham Big Crow, Minneapolis, and Reggie Big Crow, Sioux Falls; and two sisters, Hermina Good Voice Flute and Monica Good Voice Flute, both of Rapid City.
A two-night wake will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Oglala C.A.P. office.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 9, at the C.A.P. office, with the Rev. Earl Kurth, S.J., and the Rev. Steve Sanford, S.J., as celebrants. Burial will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Slim Buttes.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.
LaVerne Spain
RAPID CITY - LaVerne Spain, 92, Rapid City, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include one son, Ken Spain, Rapid City; and one daughter, Shirley Adams, Baton Rouge, La.
Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.
Whillina M. Teibel
RAPID CITY - Whillina M. Teibel, 98, Rapid City, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include one daughter, Isabelle Oubre, Rapid City; one sister, Bessie Jensen, Rapid City; and one grandson.
Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City.
Fredrick Norman Brown
BOX ELDER - Fredrick Norman Brown, 61, Box Elder, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at his home in Box Elder.
Memorial services will be Monday, April 9, 2001, at 9:30 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, with Pastor Roger Crowhurst officiating. Inurnment, with military honors provided by the Ellsworth Honor Guard, will be at 10 a.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Fred was born May 3, 1939, at Durham, N.C., to William Herbert and Pattie Mae (Pendergrast) Brown. He grew up in Durham and attended school there. He joined the Air Force and served his country honorably including two volunteer tours of Vietnam.
He retired from active duty on July 1, 1976, and moved from Japan to Box Elder, where he lived until the time of his death.
Fred was a member of the American Legion Post No. 315, Box Elder, and TREA No. A-29.
Survivors include his wife, Tsukiko Brown, Box Elder; one son and his wife, George and Rose Brown, Box Elder; one daughter and her husband, Traci and Cory Nims, Mountain Home AFB, Idaho; his mother, Pattie Mae Pendergrast, West Virginia; one brother, Kenneth Brown, West Virginia; one aunt, Alice Cook, Durham, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Jasemine and Geordan Brown, and Tyler Nims.
His father; one sister, Marilyn Rose Burgess; and one nephew, Joey, preceded him in death.
A memorial has been established to the American Legion Post 315 at Box Elder.
Charlotte Peyton
SPEARFISH - Charlotte Peyton, 86, Spearfish, and formerly of Deadwood, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.
Survivors include one daughter, Marlene Perry, Spearfish; one son, Richard Peyton, San Diego; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a stepsister, Rosadell Flaagen, Pekin, N.D.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 8, at Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 9, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead, with the Rev. Greg Kroger officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Deadwood.
Clarence B. Tammi
SPEARFISH - Clarence B. Tammi, 74, Spearfish, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.
Survivors include his wife, Paulette Tammi, Spearfish; two daughters, Jeneen Mack, Lead, and Jenelle Fode, Byron, Minn.; three brothers, Howard and Leo Tammi, both of Sturgis, and Melvin Tammi, Deadwood; two sisters, Irene Karinen, Livingston, Mont., and Lillian Tammi, Redfield; and five grandchildren.
There will be no services.

Rayland Bender
RAPID CITY - Rayland Bender, 58, Rapid City, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include three sons, Trenton Bender, Minneapolis, and Dean Bender and Rayland Bender, both of Rapid City; and two daughters, Nanette Argon, Fowler, Colo., and Hope Witte, Hot Springs.
Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.
Casey H. Christopher
RAPID CITY - Casey H. Christopher, 82, of Rapid City, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Casey was born Jan. 1, 1919, in Cokato, Minn., to Edwin and Ida (Hurley) Christopher. He grew up and attended schools in the Cokato area. On Nov. 18, 1939, he was joined in marriage to Catherine Gans. Casey then joined the U.S. Navy and served in the construction battalion (Seabees) in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
After Casey's service to his country, he returned to the Minneapolis area, attended trade school and served his plumber's apprenticeship. He was then employed by the city of Minneapolis for 30 years as a plumber. After his retirement from the city, Casey continued his work with a private plumbing company for several years.
He was a member of and served on the executive board of the Plumbers & Pipefitters Union, Local 15, in Minneapolis. Casey was also a member of the VFW and American Legion, and he was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by Catherine, his beloved wife of 60 years, who passed away in April of 1999.
Survivors include their son, Kim, his wife, Rita, and four grandchildren, Dawna, Megan, Kelsa and Jonathan Christopher, all of Rapid City. Casey is also survived by his brother, Earl Christopher of Cambridge, Minn., his sister, June Garner and her husband, Russell, of Minneapolis.
Visitation will be one hour before services, which will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, at South Canyon Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in St. Paul, Minn.
A memorial has been established.

Orville L. Hurst
DRAPER - Orville L. Hurst, 93, Draper, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.
Survivors include seven children, Russell Hurst, Farmington, Minn., Joyce Drabek, Belle Fourche, Norman Hurst, Mobridge, Dwight Hurst, Murdo, Nancy Nugent, Greeley, Colo., Marlyce Miller, Elk Grove, Calif., and Muriel Schroeder, New Hampton, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Murdo Cemetery. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Draper.
Hofmeister Chapels of Pierre is in charge of arrangements.
Louis S. Kovar
NEWELL - Louis S. Kovar, 87, Newell, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Sturgis
Community Health Care Center.
Survivors include three sons, Donald Kovar, Sheridan, Wyo., Neil Kovar, Newell, and Raymond Kovar, Buffalo, Wyo.; one daughter, Florence Hatzenbuhler, Buffalo, Wyo.; one brother, Bud Kovar, Flasher, N.D.; one sister, Bonnie Brilz, Bismarck, N.D.; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 8, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and one hour before services Monday at Newell Community Church in Newell.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 9, at the church, with the Rev. Tom Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Hope Cemetery.
Dean J. VanCleave
COBB, Calif. - Committal services for Dean J. VanCleave, age 56, of Cobb, Calif., will be Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Interment Service Center at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with the Rev. Harold Brink officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Volunteer Honor Guard. Family and friends may gather at Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis before going to the cemetery.
Dean J. VanCleave was born June 30, 1946, at Sturgis; he attended school in Sturgis. He served 10 years in the Navy, receiving the Navy Ribbon of Commendation. He worked as a power-plant operator for 37 years.
He married Lynne Taylor of El Cajon, Calif., on March 30, 1966.
He was preceded in death by his father, Milo; brothers, Raymond and Randy; and one granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife, Lynne; son, Wayne; daughters, Gina Holgerson, Diana and Angie; and seven grandchildren, all of California; his mother, Marjorie of Whitewood; brothers, Robert and Galen; sisters, Donna Rice and Anita Kline; sister-in-law, Alberta VanCleave; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are with the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis.
