Bobby Lee Withrow

RAPID CITY - Bobby Lee Withrow, 70, of Rapid City, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at home after a short battle with cancer.

Bobby was born March 27, 1931, in Farmersville, Texas, to Alvin and Roxie (Regan) Withrow. He graduated from Farmsville High School in 1948. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and served on active duty for four months, then changed to the Reserve, where he remained for six years. In 1952, he graduated from East Texas State in Commerce, Texas, to become a high school business teacher. Instead of teaching, he went to New Mexico to work for the Western Oil Well Co.

In 1954, Bobby changed from U.S. Navy Reserve to U.S. Air Force pilot training. He was in training at Lackland AFB, Texas, and Malden, Mo., and finally graduated as a 2nd lieutenant on Aug. 31, 1955, at Vance AFB in Enid, Okla. While in Enid, he met Myrlin Lively, who was in nurses training there. They married on Feb. 6, 1960, in Dallas, Texas.

Their first station was Offutt AFB, Omaha, Neb., where Bobby was in the 34th Air Refueling Squadron flying the KC-135. He also spent a short time at Pease AFB, New Hampshire, in the KC-97. While at Offutt, two daughters were born to Bobby and Myrlin, Leesha, on April 1, 1961, and Sharon, on April 30, 1962. In July of 1963, the family was transferred to Walker AFB, Roswell, N.M. On Dec. 15, 1966, Todd joined the family. January 1967 found the family moving to Plattsburg AFB, N.Y.

March through May 1968 Bobby spent in Thailand, only to receive a full transfer to Vietnam in December 1968. Before leaving in December, the family moved to Sherman, Texas, where Myrlin and the children stayed for the year of 1969 while Bobby was in Nam.

January 1970 found the Withrows on their way to Castle AFB, Calif. Bobby was an instructor pilot in KC-135s there. In July 1973, he was transferred to Ellsworth AFB, S.D., to be the Operations Officer and then squadron commander of the 28th Air Refueling Squadron. After he left the Tanker Squadron, he was in various other jobs at Ellsworth.

On Feb. 1, 1982, Bobby retired with 34 years of serving his country and 6,800 hours of flying time. After retirement, he held various jobs such as: substitute teacher, working for Black Hills Workshop, Black Hills Co-Op placement of students and, finally, driving every other morning for Airborne Express.

Upon arriving at EAFB, Bobby got his family into the horse business and remained there for the rest of this life. He was an active member in the EAFB riding club and served as president and board member. He loved team roping and participated in the sport as a heeler.

Bobby belonged to the pilot organization of Daedalians, Elks Lodge 1187, Western South Dakota Buckaroos, Black Hills Roping Club and Hermosa Roping Club. With all his activities, his favorite thing was being with and playing with his children and grandchildren.

Bobby is survived by his wife, Myrlin of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Leesha and Jon Orick of Sacramento, Calif., Sharon and Art Reistad of Minot, N.D.; one son and fiancee, Todd Withrow and Jennifer Maher of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister and brother-in-law, Jeraldine and Mel King of Lovington, N.M.; a niece, Chaney Rogers; and a nephew, Chris Coffman; four grandsons, Christian and Kyle Reistad, Jonah and Noah Withrow; and three granddogs, Sydney, Cassie and C.J. Orick.

A gathering with the family will be on Friday, April 6, 2001, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Behrens Funeral Home. Memorial services, with military honors, will be Saturday, April 7, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. in the Behrens Funeral Home Chapel, with Bob Bennett and Charlie Tutor officiating.

Inurnment will be Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Bobby was always willing to help anyone. He was a classy, fun-loving, happy man who loved a good joke, goof times, e-mail and computer games. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.

G. Edwin Schmitt

HOT SPRINGS - G. Edwin Schmitt, 91, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, of natural causes at Castle Manor Nursing Home, Hot Springs.

Services will begin at 1 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Bethesda Lutheran Church, with Pastor Dana Brooks officiating. Interment will follow at Custer Community Cemetery, Custer.

Ed was born to Johann and Friederika (Lammle) Schmitt in rural McPherson County near Long Lake on Oct. 21, 1909. He graduated from Eureka High School and attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, where he studied pharmacy. After two years, the Great Depression interrupted his formal education, and he returned to Eureka, where he worked as a pharmacist at Eureka Drug Store. He became a high school basketball referee, officiating for several years throughout eastern South Dakota. In 1938, he married Josephine (Jo) Carlson in Eureka. To this marriage, their son, Vern, was born.

The family moved to Aberdeen in 1947 and lived there until 1953, where Ed worked as a pharmacist at Woodward Drug Store. He was active in community affairs, including the Aberdeen Lion's Club, where he became president. In 1953, Ed decided to change his life, quit the pharmacy business and moved to Custer, where he bought the Home Auto Court. He loved running a motel and made friends throughout the United States and Canada. After selling the motel, he and Jo bought a cabin southeast of Custer and enjoyed retirement. The cabin was retreat for family and friends and offered rest and relaxation for many. After selling the cabin, he and Jo moved to Hot Springs, where Jo worked as a nurse at the veterans hospital now known as the VA Medical Center.

Ed was a kind and gentle husband and a loving father and grandfather. He was active in the Lutheran Church, holding many lay positions. He had a passion for fishing and looked forward each year to his September trip to Saskatchewan with friends. He also loved bowling and competed in tournaments throughout the state. After moving to Hot Springs, he swam and exercised most mornings at Evan's Plunge. His other interests included gardening, golfing and traveling.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Jo, of Hot Springs; son, Vern, and his wife, Cheri, of Littleton, Colo.; grandson, Rich Schmitt, and his wife, Mary; granddaughters, Morgan and Andrea of Sioux Falls; grandsons, Lt. Jim Schmitt of Norfolk, Va., and Jason Schmitt of Aurora, Colo.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Bethesda Lutheran Church in Hot Springs.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks, Isburg, McColley's Chapel of Hot Springs.

Ida 'Scotty' Melvin

RAPID CITY - Ida "Scotty" Melvin, 92, of Rapid City, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include her daughter, Carole Preszler, Rapid City; her son, Tom Melvin, New York; a grandson; and two sisters.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Byron A. 'By' Hazeltine

CUSTER - Byron A. "By" Hazeltine was born July 8, 1923, in Minneapolis to Byron and Beatrice Hazeltine. The family returned to the Custer, area that following year.

Byron attended school in Custer, graduating in 1942. He joined the Navy right after graduation, serving in the Pacific aboard the USS Granville during the war years.

Byron returned to Custer after his discharge from the service and attended South Dakota State College. He worked for the Forest Service, then joined the National Park Service.

During various tours at our national parks, he was chief ranger at Badlands National Park, S.D.; Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah; and Gran Quivira, N.M.; and was superintendent of the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, Salem, Mass.

On his retirement from the Park Service, his family returned to Custer, helping manage the Stockade Co.

On Monday, April 2, 2001, Byron died after a lengthy illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Stillman and Douglas Hazeltine.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Hazeltine of Prescott, Ariz.; a son, Robert (Margaret) Hazeltine of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; a sister, Wealthy Ann Rigter of Aberdeen; two brothers, John of Oxnard, Calif., and David (Joyce) of Custer; and numerous nieces, nephews and their families around the United States.

Memorial/visitation services will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Rooks, Isburg and McColley's Chapel in Custer. There will be a family burial at Custer City Cemetery.

Warren D. Webb

RAPID CITY - Warren D. Webb, 80, passed away April 2, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born in Newell on March 30, 1921, to Harry and Leora (Livingston) Webb.

He spent three years in the United States Navy, from 1942 to 1945, and over 40 years in the Johnson Siding area west of Rapid City, where he was a land developer.

Throughout his life, Warren was fascinated with fishing and gardening. His interest in animals was focused on the wildlife on his property and family pets that included dogs, cats, birds, rabbit, ducks and a fox. The array of tame and wild ducks found at the family home resulted in his grandchildren giving him the name "Grandpa Duck." He taught his sons the value of hard work and shared his abilities to build or fix anything.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Webb; sons, Brant Webb and his wife, Cheryl, of Rapid City, and David Webb and his wife, Kristine, of Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters, Lois Bach of Ventura, Calif., Barbara Karinen of Belle Fourche, Zona Maronek of Chicago, Yvonne Grey of Kansas City, Mo.; grandchildren, Jason, Mike and Eddie Webb of Phoenix, Nikla Webb of Jacksonville, Fla., David and Mindy Copeland of Rapid City; great-grandchildren, Sierra and Jessica Newton of Phoenix.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Leroy Webb and Glen Webb; sister, Lurene McCullough; and his parents.

Memorials may be made to the Johnson Siding Fire Department.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 5, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City, with the Rev. Charlie Hunt officiating. Graveside rites will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273.

Mario 'Migs' Miglia

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa - Mario "Migs" Miglia, 89, Marshalltown, Iowa, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Lorene Miglia, Marshalltown; two children, Carole Nelson and Duane Miglia, both of Montour; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Joe Miglia, Newcastle, Wyo.

Services were held Thursday, March 29, at Estel-Perrin-Avey Funeral Home of Marshalltown. Burial was in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Marshalltown.

Clara Rowena Phillips

RAPID CITY - Clara Rowena Phillips, 88, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Alfred Phillips, Rapid City; four daughters, Helen Holzer, Myrna Berman and Rita Collins, all of Rapid City, and Lois JoAn Place, Mitchell, Neb.; a sister, Gertrude Gleason, Tyndall; 14 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday, April 3, at the Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Home in Rapid City. Burial was at Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Rapid City.

Arthur D. Taggart

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Arthur D. Taggart, 80, formerly of Vine Grove, Ky., died March 29, 2001, at VenCor Rehab Hospital in Louisville, Ky., having never fully recovered from injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Oct. 26, 2000.

Visitations will be from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Rooks, Isburg, McColley's Chapel, Hot Springs, S.D. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 p.m., with full military honors, at Evergreen Cemetery, Hot Springs.

Arthur D. Taggart was born Sept. 22, 1920, in Hay Springs, Neb., the son of William and Viola (Thompson) Taggart.

Art proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served 27 years in various branches of law enforcement, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Radcliff Lincoln Trail Motorcycle Club, associated member of Harley Owners Group and Kentucky Chapter 1, Rolling Thunder Organization of POW/MIA, Veterans Affairs.

Art is survived by daughters, Virginia (David) Montgomery, Vine Grove, Ky., Marlene (Jay) Kelso, Green River, Wyo., Patty (Mike) Mitchell, Green River; sons, Gary (Coral) Taggart, Clearfield, Utah, Stephen (Terry) Taggart, Evansville, Ind.; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Art was preceded in death by his wife and one son.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks, Isburg, McColley's Chapel of the Hills, Hot Springs.

Elinor Elaine Carr

COLUMBUS, Mont. - Elinor Elaine Carr, 63, Columbus, Mont., formerly of Sturgis, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include a son, John Carr, Columbus, Mont.; three daughters, Patricia Silvernagle, West Point, Utah, Michelle Fleming, Columbus, and Crystal Johnson, Sturgis, S.D.; a brother, Robert Schar, Shelbyville, Tenn.; a sister, Rosetta Hotchkin, Rapid City; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, April 6, at Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Sturgis, and one hour before services at the church.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 6, at First Baptist Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Roger Crowhurst officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.

Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Sturgis is in charge of arrangements.

Harley E. 'Gene' Shevling

NISLAND - Harley E. "Gene" Shevling, 69, Nisland, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Shevling, Nisland; two daughters, Susan Porter, Geddes, and Erin Oehler, Maryville, Mo.; a son, James Shevling, Gladstone, Mo.; two step-daughters, Angalena Quinn of Kansas City, Mo., and Yvette Mitchell, Springfield, Mo.; six grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and one hour before services at the church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 6, at Belle Fourche United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Steve Olson officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be at 1 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche is in charge of arrangements.
