Angeline Murray Cimino

TEMPE, Ariz. - Angeline Murray Cimino, Aug. 14, 1911 to March 24, 2001. Angeline's parents were Mary Little Thunder Murray and Stephen K. Murray.

Preceding her in death were her sisters, Lydia M. Little Thunder, Laura M. Heminger, Virginia M. Miller, Viola M. Johnson, Harriett M. Burnette; her brothers, Wallace Murray and Larvo Murray.

Surviving her are a son, Robert Cimino of Tempe, Ariz.; and grandchildren, Lori Cimino and Christopher Cimino of Tempe, Ariz.; a sister, Olive Pretty Bird of Rosebud, S.D.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She died at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Tempe, Ariz., and will be buried at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D.

Angeline had a happy childhood with her extended family on a farm near Parmelee, S.D.

Her formal education began at the little one room log house in Parmelee, followed by Rapid City Indian School, Genoa Indian School, Haskell Institute in Kansas and Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia. After graduation, she continued working there for a year and then went to Lawton, Okla., where she enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the hospital ship Hope, and in 1943 she was sent to North Africa.

Angie was assistant chief nurse in a 750-bed mobile evacuation hospital. "I knew all about making and moving camp. I knew how to chop wood also, our tent was always warm," she said. Angie was later on the USS Newfoundland off the shore of Italy, when an enemy plane bombed the bridge deck and set it on fire. Seventeen doctors, nurses and crewmen were killed, but Angie and the others were rescued by the USS Andrew and brought back to Biserte, North Africa. "We could hear the bombing and see the firing on shore. Every morning, I searched the roster for familiar names from the rez and sure enough there was one. I found him on his cot with eyes closed so I said in Lakota, "Kikta hiya, wana anpa ye," Jake thought he died and was in Heaven. "I slowly opened my eyes and there stood the most beautiful sight I have ever seen - a Lakota Nurse," he said.

When the war ended, Angie was in the north of Italy and helped close down the hospital before boarding the USS Valencia to sail back to the United States. When the Statue of Liberty came into view, there were shouts of joy. She was discharged at Fort Dix in 1946. At one of the military extravaganzas over there, she was spotlighted while she was waltzing to the tune of "Indian Love Call" with a tall, handsome officer. "I never saw him again," she said.

Over the next several years, Angie worked for Indian Health Services, first at Old Cheyenne Agency, Lawton, Okla., and Tacoma, Wash., where she met and married Louis Cimino, a railroad mail clerk in 1950.

She accepted a two-year temporary job as director of nurses at Winslow, Ariz., before enrolling at Arizona State University to earn her B.S.N. in 1965. She worked at Pine Ridge, was assistant director of nurses at Fort Defiance, Ariz., and later became Director of Nurses at Sacaton on the Gila River Pine Reservation.

Angie retired in 1972 but was offered a part-time position as academic adviser at ASU's College of Nursing. After three years, she retired again, but the president of the National Native American Nurses Organization asked her to work as a recruiter in their Washington, D.C., office. A year later, she was ready to return home to the quietude of Arizona.

After Louis died in 1984, she moved in with her son. Robert left his job three years ago because he wanted to be his mother's sole caregiver.

Angie gave generously of her time, encouragement and money to many of her nieces, nephews, other relatives and anyone else who sought shelter under her enormous umbrella.

She suffered with arthritis for so long. In our last conversation, she decided against a knee replacement saying, "No thank you. I'll take my wounded knee with me," and so she did. A truly remarkable American Christian Lakota lady is leaving a vast void in our lives.

Services are set for 12 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapid City, with Father David A. Cameron officiating.

She will be buried among the bravest at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis at 2 p.m. Friday, April 6, with a salute befitting a fallen hero.

Kirk Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ZoeZella Bartels

RAPID CITY - ZoeZella Bartels, 70, of Rapid City, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

When she knew her time was short, her last request of me, her youngest child, was to write her obituary. I could make a list of her hobbies, activities and accomplishments, but that doesn't define her as a person.

She was a contradiction. She was at once hard and demanding, tender and thoughtful. She was inquisitive and intelligent, patient yet impulsive. You may not understand if you didn't know her, but if you did, you would understand her.

She was born May 29, 1930, in Alpena, to William (Bill) and Zoe (Coursey) Kelly. She grew up in Alpena with the exception of a few years when she was a child and the family lived in California. Other than four years spent in Laramie, Wyo., she lived in Rapid City with her husband and children since 1954.

ZoeZella was a member of First Evangelical Free Church for many years. She was the owner of Yarn Crafts in Rapid City. At the age of 37, with five children and a full-time job, she went back to high school and graduated cum laude. For many years, she was an active member of the Women of the Moose, holding several different offices. While her children were in school, she was a Girl Scout leader, a Boy Scout den mother, and active in Rebekkahs and Theta Rho. She loved crafts of all kinds, especially knitting, and she enjoyed camping before her illness prevented that activity.

ZoeZella was the beloved wife of Lloyd H. Bartels of Rapid City, with whom she was united in marriage on June 25, 1948, and devoted mother of two sons, Kenneth Bartels of Bismarck, N.D., Richard Bartels of Sioux Falls; three daughters, Rebecca Huwe and her husband, Thomas of Rapid City, Barbara Corder and her husband, Steven of Hanover Park, Ill., Melanie Graw and her husband, Thomas, of Vernon Hills, Ill. She was the proud grandmother of Jason Bartels and his wife, Christin, of Sioux Falls, Elizabeth Herschberger and her husband, Glenn, of Terrell, Texas, Kenneth Corder of Austin, Texas, Bobbi Jo Bartels of Rapid City, Janet, Russell, Kelly and Levi Bartels of Canton; and the fond great-grandmother of Jacob Bartels. ZoeZella was also the dear sister of Betty Gordon of Ojai, Calif.; and half-sister of Clair Crawford of Denver. Also sharing her life are Gloria Bartels, Ella Bartels and John Schnose, all of Canton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant twins, Robert and Roberta Bartels; one grandson, Jeremy Bartels; one brother, Bill Kelly of Alpena; and one half-brother, Harry Crawford of West Lake Village, Calif.

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kirk Funeral Home, 1051 E. Minnesota St., Rapid City, and then at the church on Thursday for one hour before services.

Services are set for 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, at First Evangelical Free Church, 1124 Kansas City St., in Rapid City, with the Rev. David Greenhood and the Rev. Tim Coats officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.

Willis 'Dale' Pattinson

SPEARFISH - Willis "Dale" Pattinson, 69, Spearfish, died March 30, 2001, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 25, 1931, in Sundance, Wyo., to Ernest William and Effie Estelle (Hauer) Pattinson. He attended school in Aladdin, Alva and Sundance, Wyo.

Dale married Alice Lorraine Larive on April 14, 1950. He and his family lived in Sundance, Newcastle, Casper, Midwest and Sheridan, Wyo., as well as Belle Fourche and Spearfish, S.D., where they gained many wonderful lifetime friends.

Dale was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish, the Sheridan (Wyo.) Elk's Lodge No. 520 and was a longtime member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed reading, telling and hearing good stories, hunting and rodeos. He especially looked forward to attending the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nev., every December with friends Karen and Randall Davis.

Dale's teen-age years were spent working on ranches in Crook County, Wyo. One of his most memorable times was living and working with Tom and Dave Seeley on the Todd Seeley Ranch near Sundance. He started with them when he was 10 years old. He raked hay with a team of horses and drove a shot-stacker team to put up hay as a teen-ager. He also herded sheep and drove cattle to the summer range on National Forest Land in the spring. Additionally, he milked cows, fixed fence, plowed, disked, cut and stacked hay, shocked grain and helped with thrashing on other local ranches, all of which he enjoyed. He also worked for several local construction companies in that area.

In 1950, Dale was employed by C.D. Robert's Construction Company in Sundance, operating a front-end loader. He participated in the building of the face of Keyhole Dam northeast of Moorcroft, Wyo., by helping load two trucks a day by hand with sand and rock. Eventually, a conveyor belt was made available, making loading easier. He worked for Hart Brother's Lumber Company in Sundance, in 1951, hauling lumber. From 1951 to 1953, he hauled petroleum from Newcastle, Wyo., to Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City, S.D., for MJB, a lessee of Johnson Fuel Liners. He skidded and hauled logs for the Homestake Sawmill in Spearfish in 1954. From 1955 to 1957, Dale drove a bulk fuel truck, delivering fuel to Crook County ranches for Big D Oil Company in Sundance. He always enjoyed visiting with area ranchers. Dale was a field foreman and gauger for Tomlin Transportation and then Consolidated Freightways from 1957 to 1969. He was the first gauger in the oil field on the Robinson Ranch at Moorcroft, Wyo., and he gauged for several oil companies in the Powder River Basin as well as in Midwest, Wyo., oil fields. He was a member of the Consolidated Freightways Million Mile Club. From 1969 to 1971, he was employed by American Colloid of Belle Fourche, S.D., stripping bentonite. From 1971 to 1973, he drove a logging truck for Tongue River Logging in Sheridan, Wyo. He enjoyed the challenge of driving off of the Big Horn Mountains in the winter. In 1974, he and his wife, Alice, moved to Gillette, Wyo., where he went to work for Amax Coal Company at the Belle Ayr Mine as an Oiler and then Shovel Operator. He retired from Amax Coal in 1994. Dale made many special friends during those years.

Dale is survived by his wife, Alice of Spearfish; a daughter, Sheryl Alice Howell of Sheridan; a son, Michael "Mick" Dale Pattinson and wife, Stacy Sue of North Logan, Utah; three granddaughters, Gwen Howell, Piper Howell and Sara Pattinson; three grandsons, Lucas Howell, Joel Pattinson and William "Bill" Ebeling. He is also survived by three sisters, Gladys Landers and husband Leland of Gillette, Opal Smith of Black Hawk, S.D., and Juanita Erdman and husband Gene of Spearfish. His stepfather, Jesse Janes, also resides in Spearfish. He has several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and one nephew.

At Dale's request no services will be held. Cremation has taken place. Private interment services will be held at Green Mountain Cemetery in Sundance at a later date, with Reverend Kerry Prendiville officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Banner Hospice of Spearfish.
