Leon E. Romey
BUFFALO GAP — Leon E. Romey, 81, of Buffalo Gap, died Friday, August 10, 2001, at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home, Hot Springs.
Leon was born June 19, 1920, at Scottsbluff, Neb., to Gus and Julie (Pederson) Romey, who were one of the first postmasters in Heppner, S.D. Leon lived most of his life in the Buffalo Gap area. Leon quit school at an early age to help work the farm and care for the younger siblings.
He then entered the service on May 5, 1942, and was assigned to the 507th Parachute Infantry, which was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. During combat duty, he was also attached to the 101st Airborne Division. Leon was one of the first paratroopers to parachute during D-Day to secure the bridges over the rivers behind Utah Beach. Leon experienced heavy combat fighting. While parachuting into a German Horse Calvary Unit, he was injured in the field by shrapnel, was bandaged and continued fighting.
Leon was awarded the prestigious Bronze Star Medal for his participation in the Rhine Conflict before D-Day. He was also awarded the Good Conduct Award, Bronze Arrowhead, Meritorious Award, and Combat Infantry Badge. Leo was proud to fight for his country and was a true patriot.
After returning home, Leon married his first wife, Alice Denton, and began a career of truck driving. This marriage ended in 1958.
Leon was never content away from the ranch and soon returned to South Dakota to begin a life-long career as a cowboy. Leon has worked for several area ranches around the Buffalo Gap area. Leon was happiest on back of a horse, living in the middle of the prairie miles from nowhere. Leon will forever be known as one of the grandest cowboys. He is one of the last of the "old" cowboys riding on the back of a horse for days, herding cattle and breaking horses. He was a strong statue of a man who was a gentleman, with tremendous pride.
