Patricia Joyce Ann Opsal

EL CAJON, Calif. — Funeral services for Patricia Joyce Ann Opsal, 59, of El Cajon, formerly of Sisseton, S.D., were held Aug. 3, 2001, at Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, with the Rev. Thomas Kuusisto officiating. Pallbearers were Dustin Opsal, Randy Deutsch, Kenny Seurer, Roger Nelson, Scott England and Tim Gunderson. Honorary pallbearers were Patricia's grandchildren, Dustin Opsal, Brett Opsal, Jerome Opsal, Justin Opsal, Derek Nieland and Melissa Nieland. Organist was Mona Griseth and soloist was Shanda Landis. Interment was in the Sisseton Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday, Aug. 2, and Friday, Aug. 3, at Cahill Funeral Chapel, and one hour before services at the church. Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton was in charge of arrangements.

Patricia was born May 14, 1942, in Sisseton, to Ole and Inga (Running) Nelson. Patricia grew up in the New Effington area, graduating from New Effington High School in 1960. After her education, Patricia was united in marriage to Allen Opsal in 1960 in Sisseton. The couple resided in Sisseton, where Patricia worked in the school system as the secretary to the superintendent. She also worked in the Roberts County Courthouse as a secretary in the Director of Equalization office. In 1985, Patricia moved to Rapid City, where she worked for the Eye Institute. In 1989, Patricia moved to El Cajon, where she worked for Long's Drug. Patricia passed away suddenly on July 30, 2001, in Sisseton, while home visiting family and friends. Patricia enjoyed spending time with family and friends and crocheting. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Patricia is survived by three children, Troy and wife Geraldine Opsal of Peever, S.D., Brent and wife Rose Opsal of San Diego, and Treva and husband Joe Nieland of Rapid City; six grandchildren, Dustin Opsal of Peever, Brett, Jerome and Justin Opsal of San Diego, and Derek and Melissa Nieland of Rapid City; one sister, Shirley England, of El Cajon, Calif.; and one brother, Virgil Nelson, of Longmont, Colo.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jerome Nelson.

Capt. Joseph Garrett

VENTURA, Calif. — Capt. Joseph Garrett, USN Retired, born in Zeona, S.D. on April 24, 1917, passed away in his Ventura, Calif., home on July 28.

Joe graduated from Spearfish High School in 1934 and S.D. School of Mines in 1939.

In 1935, Joe and his friend Earl Brockelsby founded Reptile Gardens, which they operated together until Joe left the Black Hills to join the Navy.

A naval aviator, Joe was stationed in Pearl Harbor at the outbreak of World War II. It was there that he met his wife of 58 years, Betty Anne Snodgrass, of Ventura County. His 23-year naval career culminated as Director of Range Operations, Pacific Missile Range, Pt. Mugu.

A resident of Ventura, since 1960, Joe, an avid golfer, was a Ventura City Councilman in the 1970s. He was respected for his common-sense approach to city government. He helped his sons, Spencer and Scott, found the Pierpont Racquet Club in 1975.

Preceded in death by his son Bruce and daughter Ginger White, Joe is survived by his brother Klink Garrett of Spearfish; his wife and two sons; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Burial will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery.

Ray C. Simpson

RAPID CITY — Ray C. Simpson, 78, Rapid City, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at his home.

Ray was born to Mr. and Mrs. Claude Simpson on Aug. 28, 1922, in Mitchell, Davison County.

He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1940. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Navy and served as an Aviation Machinist Mate in the Pacific during World War II.

On March 18, 1943, he married Hazel Hanson at Mitchell. Upon returning from the service, he graduated from DWU in Mitchell. His lifelong work involved the military, either in the National Guard or as a service officer for the South Dakota Division of Veterans Affairs. As a member of the National Guard, he achieved the rank of Warrant Officer. He dedicated his life to working for veterans' benefits. His Americanism and patriotism were apparent through the local and state offices he held in the VFW. Ray held all the chairs in the state VFW organization and served as State Commander in 1963-1964. As a lifetime member of the VFW, he remained active throughout his life.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, VFW Post 1273, American Legion, DAV, Cooties, and the State National Guard Enlistment Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Hazel, of Rapid City; his children, Dale and Kelly Simpson, Chelsea, Mass., Ronald and Glenda Simpson, Lakewood, Colo., and Linda and Steve Post, Aberdeen; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Ruth Falch, Brattleboro, Vt.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at Behrens Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 6, at 10 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, with Pastor Bruce Baum officiating.

Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Charles G. Geboe Sr.

RAPID CITY — Charles G. Geboe Sr., 63, Rapid City, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at his home in Rapid City.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Geboe, Rapid City; three sons, Charles Geboe, San Diego, Ben Geboe, New York, and Matthew Geboe, Rapid City; one daughter, Jeanette Geboe, Rapid City; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Gilbert Kills Pretty Enemy

BULLHEAD — Gilbert Kills Pretty Enemy, Sunka Gi Ite-Iya, 79, Bullhead, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, in Bismarck, N.D.

A wake service will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, in the Rock Creek Day School gym in Bullhead.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, in the school gym, with the Rev. William O'Connell officiating. Mr. J.B. Kills Pretty Enemy will officiate over traditional services.

Burial will be at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Mobridge.

Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Wing

NEWCASTLE, Wyo. — Mary Wing, 89, Newcastle, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Weston Manor Nursing Home in Newcastle.

Survivors include one son, Charles Wing, Cheyenne, Wyo.; and one brother, Joseph Puricelli, Dickinson, Texas.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Worden Funeral Chapel in Newcastle.

A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Newcastle.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at the church, with Deacon John Aloisio and the Rev. Bruce Clapham officiating.

Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newcastle.

Ruth M. O'Haver

TERRELL, Texas — Ruth M. O'Haver, 87, Terrell and formerly of Hulett, Wyo., and Sundance, Wyo., died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at the Medical Center in Terrell.

Survivors include one son, Wayne O'Haver, Terrell.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler-Roberts Funeral Chapel of Sundance.

Bertha Davidson Spencer

PASCO, Wash. — Bertha Davidson Spencer, 72, was born July 30, 1929, at Eagle Butte, S.D., and died July 31, 2001, at Pasco, Wash.

Survivors include two daughters, Jeanie Percifield, Burbank, Wash., and Bonnie Stanley, Pasco; three sisters, Mary Ann Simon, Sturgis, S.D., Phyllis O'Leary, El Paso, Texas, and Patti Simon, Chandler, Ariz.; three brothers, James Davidson and Jerry Davidson of Eagle Butte, and Donald Davidson of Auburn; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Rick; her husband, Leroy (Red); her parents, James and Edith Davidson; and one brother, Bill Davidson.

The Bruce Lee Mortuary of Pasco is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial services will be held at the gravesite Saturday, Aug. 4, in Pasco.

Max N. Foster

CUSTER — Max N. Foster, 68, of Custer, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, near Hot Springs.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Rooks-McColley Chapel in Custer.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at Custer Community Church, with Pastor Joel Ziolkowski officiating.

Burial will follow at the Custer City Cemetery.

Max was born on July 2, 1933, to Doyle and Elsie (Ray) Foster in Gainesville, Mo.

Max Foster was raised in Tulare County, Calif., and attended Exeter Union High School, Mount San Antonio College in Los Angeles, the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, and Fresno State University, where he received a police science degree.

He graduated from the Los Angeles Police Academy in 1955 and served nine years with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office. He returned to Tulare County in 1965, joined the sheriff's office, and received various assignments including those of chief deputy coroner, detective lieutenant and captain. In 1971, he joined the U.S. State Department with the Agency for International Development (AID) and went to South Vietnam as a police adviser in the provinces of Quang Tri and Quang Nam.

He was awarded two police valor medals and the South Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with silver star by the national police for helping rescue other officers under gunfire while surrounded by hostile forces. In 1973, he returned to Tulare County and was appointed undersheriff, and in 1977, he attended and graduated from the 108th Session of the National FBI Academy. He retired in 1985 and moved to Custer, where he served as sheriff in 1994. During his 30 years of law enforcement service, Undersheriff Max Foster displayed courage and commitment to the highest ideals of law enforcement, and his extensive efforts brought honor to him, his family, and his Department.

Max is survived by his wife, Billye, of Custer; his children, Rebecca and Brian Prentice of LaCanada, Calif., Bruce and Sue Foster of Fallbrooke, Calif., and Greg and Diana Foster of Custer; and his five granddaughters, Brooke, Blythe, Chelsea, Taylor, and Haley Foster; and one brother, Don Foster.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Chapel of Custer, S.D.

Gretchen Elouise Serfling Erickson

RAPID CITY — Gretchen Elouise Serfling Erickson, 93, Rapid City, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include one son, Arno Erickson, Elkhart, Ind.; two daughters, Darlene Harris, Beach Park, Ill., and Jean O'Marah, Ogdensberg, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City.

Ray C. Simpson

RAPID CITY — Ray C. Simpson, 78, Rapid City, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at his home in Rapid City.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Simpson, Rapid City; two sons, Dale Simpson, Chelsea, Mass., and Ronald Simpson, Lakewood, Colo.; one daughter, Linda Post, Aberdeen; and one sister, Ruth Falch, Brattlebora, Vt.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City.

Opal Mae Kozel

BLUNT — Opal Mae Kozel, 98, Blunt, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at her home in Blunt.

Survivors include three children, Lorraine Cauthen, Clemson, S.C., Louise Kozel, Blunt, and Lavon Kozel, Huron; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ellen Tunnell, Rapid City, and Ruby Anderson and Ruth Shea, both of California.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, with a 7 p.m. prayer service and Order of Eastern Star service, at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at United Methodist Church in Blunt.

Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blunt.
