Audrey Conner

BELLE FOURCHE — Audrey Conner, 69, Belle Fourche, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Avera McKenna Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Conner, Belle Fourche; three daughters, Jeriann Birath, Sioux Falls, Tammy Bietz, Tripp, and Kim Mueller, Rapid City; and one brother, Jerry Thompson, Chino Hills, Calif.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Hans Sacrison officiating.

Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Harold D. Cone

LEAD — Funeral services for Harold D. Cone, 94, of Lead, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead. The Rev. Greg Kroger will officiate.

Harold died Monday, July 30, at Kirkwood Manor in Lead. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be in the Mountain Lawn Cemetery of Lead. Memorials have been established in his memory to either Trinity United Methodist Church or the Kiwanis Scholarship Fund.

Harold was born Nov. 10, 1906, at the home of his parents, Helon and Mabel (Bachtell) Cone, in Moody County. He attended school in Trent. Harold received his bachelor's degree from Dakota State University in Madison and his master's degree from Iowa University in Iowa City, Iowa. He did his postgraduate work in Colorado and South Dakota. Harold married Esther Heeren at Madison on June 30, 1932. The couple recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Harold's 41-year teaching career included positions in Elkton, Bridgewater, Clear Lake, Iowa, and Lead, where he taught biology from 1942 until his retirement in 1971. The National Association of Biology Teachers honored him as an outstanding biology teacher in 1968.

He was an active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school and served in many capacities throughout the years. Harold joined the Lead Kiwanis Club in 1957 and maintained a perfect attendance record until his death. He served as secretary for many years and was a recipient of the Cragon Thom Outstanding Kiwanis Secretary Award. He was also honored by his local Kiwanis Club with the prestigious Hixon award. Harold also belonged to numerous other organizations and was a dedicated member and volunteer. He was a Boy Scout leader, Beautification Committee treasurer, Library Board member, C.A.N. member, and professionally belonged to SDEA, NEA, the National Association of Biology Teachers, and the Northern Hills Retired Teachers Association. He was appointed to Gov. Ralph Herseth's Committee on Children and Youth.

He was awarded the 1989 Lead Volunteer of the Year medal by Gov. George Mickelson. In 1981, Harold received the Golden Star Masonic Lodge citation for community service. Most importantly, to family he was a kind, loving, and gentle husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed his family. He shared his love of gardening, wildflowers, travel, fishing, and reading with his family. With great patience, he attended hundreds of tea parties, and ordered hundreds of imaginary meals from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Esther, of Lead; two daughters, Rosalie Driscoll of Vermillion, and Kathryn Wanhanen and her husband, Wayne, of rural Deadwood; four grandchildren and their spouses, Whitney and Laurie Driscoll of Spearfish, Colleen and Dwight Carroll of Elk Point, Jodi and Steven Ryan of rural Deadwood, and Julie and Scott Shoop of rural Lead; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister-in-law, Ada Cone of Rapid City; and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Doris Lester, Ferna Stevens, and Ruth Nelson; his brother, Bernard Cone; and a great-granddaughter, Stacey Ryan. Arrangements are under the direction of the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.

Viola Merrill Misel

ATLANTA — Viola Merrill Misel, 81, Atlanta and formerly of Rapid City, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at her home in Atlanta.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Wilson, Swanne, Ga., and Sharon Shipley, Sebastian, Fla.; one son, Gerald Misel Jr., Marietta, Ga.; and one sister, Alice Merrill McDonald, Rapid City.

Graveside services were held at Arlington Memorial Park in Atlanta.

Sandy Springs Chapel Funeral Directors of Atlanta was in charge of arrangements.

Hedwig G. 'Hedi' Hilt

RAPID CITY — Hedwig G. "Hedi" Hilt, 75, Rapid City, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at a local nursing home.

Hedi was born April 12, 1926, in Silesia, Germany. During her early years, she loved to play basketball and also loved the great outdoors.

She married Warren Hilt in 1948 and came to the United States. Her husband was a 30-year career man in the Air Force, and their travels eventually brought them to Rapid City in 1965, where they remained ever since. She is a life member of the Order of Eastern Star in Rapid City.

Hedi enjoyed flower gardening, music, sewing and life in general. She had a delightful laugh, great sense of humor, and a quick smile that always made you feel good. She was an excellent cook and also took great pleasure in caring for and loving her family. Throughout her long struggle with muscular dystrophy and strokes, she always remained cheerful and never complained. She was a great inspiration to others, a blessing to everyone who knew her, and had a deep abiding faith in the Lord. We will deeply miss her and her loving spirit.

Hedi was preceded in death by her husband, Warren; two sons, Francis William "Bill" and John; her mother, Adelheid, and father, Leopold Wilczynski, in Germany; and one brother, Arthur Wilczynski, and one sister, Gretel Von Der Lippe, in Germany.

She is survived by a daughter, Ginny Heidgerken (Bernard) of Rapid City; two sons, Don Hilt (Nancy) and Thomas Hilt (Genelita), both of Rapid City; also three sisters, Hildegard Pockette of New York, and Ilse Mandt and Elsbeth Wiedenfeld, Germany; and one brother, Hans Wilczynski, Germany. She has three grandsons, four granddaughters, one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter — also many nieces and nephews in the United States and Germany, and our special family friend, Richard Lurth of Mankato, Minn.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Behrens Funeral Home, and for one hour before services.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Behrens Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Bob Beck officiating.

Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Irvin T. 'Sandy' Sanderson

CANTON — Irvin T. "Sandy" Sanderson, 80, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at the Canton-Inwood Memorial Hospital in Canton.

Sandy was born March 9, 1921, in Canton, to Palmer and Alice (Huddleston) Sanderson. Sandy married Gladys M. Lund on July 12, 1945. From this union two sons were born, Craig and Thomas. His 20-year military career and service as a Congressional Liaison Officer with the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C., brought them to numerous parts of the world and the United States before retiring in Rapid City in 1986. After Gladys' death in 1999, Sandy moved to Canton and resided at Hiawatha Heights.

Sandy will be greatly missed by his family of two sons, Craig and his wife, Patty, Sturgis, and Thomas and his wife, Lena, Harrisburg; and grandsons Aaron, Ryan, Cody and Jason; and his special friend Becky Silbernagel. His parents; a brother, Donald Sanderson; and a sister, Florence Wallquist, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, with burial at 10 a.m. Friday at the Black Hills National Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home, with family present from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Charles Lee ‘Billie' Knapp

SUNDANCE, Wyo. — Charles Lee "Billie" Knapp, 70, Sundance, died

Thursday, July 26, 2001, at his home.

Survivors include his mother, Marie Knapp, Belle Fourche, S.D.; one son, Bill Knapp, Belle Fourche; two daughters, Arleta Couch, Belle Fourche and Melody Loken, Ekalaka, Mont.; four brothers, Silas Knapp, Ekalaka, Dutch Knapp, Mills, Jerry Knapp, Hulett, and Don Knapp, Camp Crook;

three sisters, Shirley Wood, Hulett, Janice Bush, Sundance, and Linda Abelseth, Rapid City, and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be for two hours before the service, which will be at 1 p.m. today at Hulett High School Gymnasium.

Burial will be at Moor Hill Cemetery in Sundance.

Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker is in charge of arrangements.

Helen L. Rypkema

RAPID CITY — Helen L. Rypkema, 78, Rapid City, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Westhills Village Assisted Living Facility.

Survivors include her husband, Milo C. Rypkema, Westhills Village, her sons, Mike Rypkema, Mount Rushmore Angus Ranch, Marty and Eddie, and her daughter, Marsha Gemeny, all of Rapid City.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at First Presbyterian Church, with Dr. David Miller and the Rev. Steve Rhodes officiating. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Hilda M. Leslie

HOT SPRINGS — Hilda M. Leslie, 93, Hot Springs, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Fall River Hospital.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.

Adelaide Marion Brodsky

SIOUX FALLS — Adelaide Marion Brodsky, 89, Sioux Falls, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls.

Adelaide Marion Topp, daughter of Fred and Mary Topp, was born Jan. 24, 1912, in a sod hut on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation near McIntosh, S.D. She moved to Lemmon, where she graduated from high school.

Adelaide was united in marriage with Jerry Brodsky on Nov. 11, 1932, at Lemmon. The couple owned and operated a meat market in Lemmon until 1945. They moved to Aberdeen and Huron before eventually settling in Rapid City.

In Rapid City, the couple owned Brodsky's Red-E-Mix Cement Plant. They then moved to Grand Island, Neb., for five years, where they owned Red-E-Mix Cement Plant. They returned to Rapid City in 1973, where Jerry went into the mobile home business.

Her husband, Jerry, died Dec. 6, 1981. Adelaide moved to Sioux Falls shortly after his death and lived at Charleston Court until October of 1997. She then moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, Jeralyn and Gary Meier.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, K. Fred Brodsky and his wife, Carol, Rockton, Ill., J. Edward Brodsky and his wife, Gisela, Friedricksdorf, Germany, Jeralyn Meier and her husband, Gary, Sioux Falls, Mike Brodsky and his wife Judy, Grand Island; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two nieces, Carol Brodsky, Portland, Ore., and Vonnie White and her husband, Craig, Doniphon, Neb.; and one sister, Marion Sanford and her husband, Sandy, Detroit Lakes, Minn.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at George Boom Funeral Home, with the family present to greet friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 30, at Peace Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.

George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls and Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City are in charge of arrangements.

Vivian Haukaas

CARTER — Vivian Haukaas, 83, Carter, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at the Indian Health Service Hospital in Rosebud.

Survivors include her children, Henrietta Joens, Eagle Butte, Patricia Hall, Winner, Pete Haukaas, Okreek, Cora Dale, Hill City, Dorothy Nelson, Carter, Jaycee Sokol, Valentine, Neb., Sidney Haukaas, Minneapolis, and Nels Haukaas, Portland, Ore.; five brothers; five sisters; 30 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, today at Mason Funeral Home in Winner. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 30, at Okreek School Gymnasium in Okreek.

Burial will be at Calvary Episcopal Cemetery in Okreek.

Billye Jo Hubbard

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. — Billye Jo Hubbard, 54, of Bullhead City, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Sturgis, S.D., March 11, 1947. She spent her early childhood at Vale, S.D.

She is survived by her father, Mark Hubbard, and one sister, Linda Hubbard, both of Bullhead City, and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Edna (Honey) Hubbard.

Arrangements are being handled by Desert Lawn Funeral Home in Mohave Valley, Ariz.

Marvin C. ‘Bush' Lockhart

HOT SPRINGS — Marvin C. "Bush" Lockhart, 87, Hot Springs, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs.

Survivors include his wife, Blanche Lockhart, Hot Springs; two sons, Dale Lockhart, Hot Springs, and Keith Lockhart, Oral; one daughter, Doris Merrill, Pine Ridge; one sister, Florence Brown, California; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, July 30, at Rooks-Isburg Chapel in Hot Springs.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the chapel, with the Rev. Bill Martin officiating.

Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.

Lula Mae Shaffer Springer

GREGORY — Lula Mae Shaffer Springer, 96, Gregory, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Rosebud Country Care Center in Gregory.

Survivors include three children, Merrill Springer and Verlyn Springer, Gregory, and Marcellene Springer, Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and three half-brothers, Harold Shaffer, Lyle Shaffer and Bill Shaffer, all of Gregory.

A prayer service was held Friday, July 20, at Kotrba Funeral Home in Gregory.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at St. John Lutheran Church in Gregory.

Burial was at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Gregory.
