Frank U. Gangone

MISSION - Frank U. Gangone, 65, Mission, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at the Sioux Falls Veterans Affairs Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Gangone, Mission; six sons, Frank Jr., Louis, Joseph, Steve, Rick and Danny; one daughter, Glenda; and seven grandchildren.

A one-night wake will begin at 7 p.m. today at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Rapid City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, at the church, with the Rev. Creighton Robertson, the Rev. Paul Sneve, the Rev. Robert Two Bulls and the Rev. Ken Owen officiating.

Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Holmes Funeral Home of Valentine, Neb., is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Josephine (L'Esperance) Apa

RAPID CITY - Helen Josephine (L'Esperance) Apa, 84, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

She was born to Joseph and Kathryn L'Esperance on November 11, 1917, in Pierre, S.D.

She married Frank Apa on May 22, 1939, in Rapid City.

She was a loving wife and mother, with an Irish temper to keep her seven children in line, which was often. She was a great cook and pie-maker. She loved to travel and visit her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Apa of Rapid City, S.D.; her children, Jerry Apa of Lead, S.D., Mike Apa of Chicago, Ill., Janet Avery of Las Vegas, Nev., Bob Apa of Boise, Idaho, Greg Apa of Moraga, Calif., Patty Larson of Rapid City, S.D., and Chris Apa of Rapid City, S.D.; one brother, Don L'Esperance of Rapid City, S.D.; two sisters, DeDe Binder of Rapid City, S.D., and Audrae Nichols of Atlanta, Ga.; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 6, 2002, from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary, with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, March 7, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral, with Msg. Michael Wooster as celebrant.

Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Lowell H. Shuck

RAPID CITY - Lowell H. Shuck, age 87, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born August 8, 1914, to George and Anna Shuck at Geddes, S.D. Lowell graduated from Geddes High School in 1932. Soon after he began a 43-year career with the Milwaukee Railroad, working in several eastern South Dakota and Iowa towns before moving to Rapid City in 1948.

Lowell married Wilma Wait of Chamberlain on March 26, 1950. Together they had three sons, Jim, Dan and John. At age 65, and upon his railroad retirement, Lowell and Wilma began a career in the travel business, and together they conducted tours all over the world, retiring from their second career in 1992.

Lowell was active with many organizations during his life, among them being a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a 50-year member of the Scottish Rite, and he was active in the Naja Shrine Temple and the Shrine Chanters. He was also a lifetime Lions Club member and lifetime Elks Club member, and he sang in the Golden Oldies Club and played the trumpet with the new Horizons Band and in the Rapid City Municipal Band. Lowell was a long-standing member of the First United Methodist Church in Rapid City.

Surviving Lowell are his wife Wilma; sons Jim (Debra) of Morrill, Neb., Dan (Judy) of Eau Claire, Wis., and John (Theresa) of Green Bay, Wis.; five grandchildren; brother G. Wayne Shuck of Belle Fourche; and sisters Marian Shuck of Wildwood, Fla., Eleanor Jackson of San Louis Obispo, Calif., and Jeanette Rude of Park Rapids, Minn.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Doug Diehl officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established to the First United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are with the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Marvin F. Swisher

SPEARFISH — Marvin F. Swisher, 78, Spearfish, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at his home.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1950.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Swisher, Spearfish; two sons, Darrell Swisher, Newcastle, Wyo., and Don Swisher, Douglas, Wyo.; four granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, with the Rev. Charley Conger officiating. Burial with military honors provided by Spearfish Honor Guard will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established to Banner Hospice.

Jim L. Marske

ABERDEEN — Jim L. Marske, 43, Aberdeen, died Friday, March 1, 2002, in an auto accident near Bath.

Survivors include two daughters, Erica Marske, Brookings, and Ashley Marske, Spearfish; two sisters, Dodie Bemis, Watertown, and Mary Lou Gauer, Bowdle; and his fiancιe, Lisa Reich, Aberdeen.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Ken Palmer officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Andover Cemetery in Andover.

Spitzer-Osthus Funeral Home in Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Irene Volker

ONIDA — Gladys Irene Housh Volker, 76, Onida, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Roy "Bud" Volker.

Survivors include four sons, Rodney Volker and Rocky Volker, both of Rapid City, Randy Volker, Agar, and Royce Volker, Onida; one daughter, Rebecca Graham, Helena, Mont.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a 5:30 p.m. prayer service today at First Presbyterian Church in Onida. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the church.

Burial will follow at Onida Cemetery.

Feigum Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lowell H. Shuck

RAPID CITY — Lowell H. Shuck, 87, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Shuck, Rapid City; three sons, Jim Shuck, Morrill, Neb., Dan Shuck, Eau Claire, Wis., and John Shuck, Green Bay, Wis.; one brother, Wayne Shuck, Belle Fourche; three sisters, Marion Shuck, Wildwood, Fla., Eleanor Jackson, San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Jeannette Rude, Park Rapids, Minn.; and five grandchildren.

Dorothea D. Woodward Anderson

SPEARFISH — Dorothea D. Woodward Anderson, 86, Spearfish, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility.

Survivors include two sons, James Anderson, Spearfish, and Jack Anderson, Virginia Beach, Va.; three daughters, Joan Follette and Janet Ladson, both of Spearfish, and Jean Faucheux, Luling, La; two sisters, Juanita Winters, Rapid City, and Arle Christensen of Arizona; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew A. Anderson.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, March 5, at Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish, and one hour before services at the church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at United Methodist Church in Spearfish, with the Rev. Kip Roozen officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.

Helen J. Apa

RAPID CITY — Helen J. Apa, 84, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband Frank, Rapid City; five sons, Jerry Apa, Deadwood, Mike Apa, Chicago, Ill., Chris Apa, Rapid City, Bob Apa, Boise, Idaho, and Greg Apa, Moraga, Calif.; two daughters, Janet Avery, Las Vegas, Nev., and Patty Larson, Rapid City.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.

Robert G. Van Ness

RAPID CITY — Robert G. Van Ness, 97, Rapid City, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Rapid City Care Center.

Survivors include one son, Daryl W. Van Ness, Galt, Calif.; two daughters, Joyce L. Davis, Harrisville, R.I., and Carolyn M. Harris, Rapid City; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Van Ness.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at Skylawn Memorial Park, San Mateo, Calif.

Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Lora Lingren

SPEARFISH — Funeral Services for Lora Lingren, 87, Spearfish and formerly of Deadwood, will be 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead. Pastor Pat McBride will officiate. Visitation will be on Monday, March 4, 2002, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead. Burial will be in the Oakridge Cemetery of Deadwood. A memorial has been established to the First Baptist Church of the Northern Hills.

Lora was born March 8, 1914, at Clarkston, Wash., to John R. and Maude (Wells) McCamish. She moved to Deadwood at the age of eight with her family in a covered wagon. She graduated from Deadwood High School in 1933. Lora worked for F. L. Thorpe and was manager for 31 years. She married Herman Daniels in 1943, and he preceded her in death in 1956. Lora married Lloyd Lingren in 1964, and he preceded her in death in 1978. Lora moved to Spearfish in 1990.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of the Northern Hills, enjoyed fishing in "Jim" Creek, Black Angus cattle, and the beautiful Black Hills. Besides her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by her adopted family, Darrell and LeAnne Hohn and Emily of rural Deadwood; grandchildren, John and wife, Jennifer Hohn, Marion and Madeline of Deadwood, Paul and wife Teisha Hohn and Jared and wife Jill Hohn of Boise, Idaho, Joyce Glatt of Rapid City, Linda and husband Denny Pierson of Sioux Falls, Kristina Pierson of Burnsville, Minn., and Angela Pierson of Bozeman, Mont.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.

Thelma M. DeJong

WINNER — Thelma M. DeJong, 89, Winner, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Winner Regional Healthcare Center.

Survivors include three children, Gary DeJong, Rapid City, Luella DeJong, Winner, and Andella Leavitt, Wickenburg, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

A prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, at Mason Funeral Home in Winner. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Winner. Visitation will be one hour before both services. Burial will be at Winner Cemetery.

Ramona Ellen Marple

DEADWOOD — Ramona Ellen Marple, 77, Deadwood, died Feb. 28, 2002, at her residence in Deadwood.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, at United Methodist Church in Lead, with the Rev. Greg Kroger officiating. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

In keeping with Ramona's wishes, her body was cremated, and there will be no visitation.

A memorial has been established for the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Ramona was born Feb. 28, 1925, in Bixby, S.D., to Kenneth and Zelda (Deming) Day. She was raised and attended country school near Bixby.

On Sept. 1, 1948, Ramona married Robert Marple in Eagle Butte, S.D. The couple lived in Dupree until 1950, when they moved to Lead. In 1955, Ramona went to work for the Red Owl grocery store and Piggly Wiggly as a checker and produce manager. In 1975, her health forced her to retire. She continued living in Lead until 1989, when she moved to Deadwood.

Ramona took great pride in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she spent every chance she had with them. She enjoyed bowling, camping and social gatherings with friends and family. She was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge, Lead.

Grateful for having shared in Ramona's life are two sons, Kenneth and Barbara Yates, Sturgis, and Robert and Sheila Marple Jr., Spearfish; one daughter, Ella and Glen Everhard, Lead; one sister, Thelma McGinnis, Sturgis; one sister-in-law, Irene Webb, Spearfish; four grandchildren, Ryan and Crystal Yates, Amanda Everhard, Brandie Everhard and Aaron Marple; and two great-grandchildren, Lauren McKenzie Omberg and Keegan Huntington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, Burdette Day and Glen Day.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish and Lead.
