HOT SPRINGS — Pauline Nash, 73, Hot Springs, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Castle Manor Nursing Home.

Survivors include one sister, Phyllis Keasling, Hot Springs.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.

Heather Jean Holt

RAPID CITY — Heather Jean Holt died peacefully Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital following a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family and close friends.

She was born May 30, 1973, at Rapid City, S.D., to Robert J. Grass and Margaret "Peg" (Dalzell) Grass. Heather spent her early years in Rapid City and Aberdeen, S.D. She grew up in San Diego, Calif., where she was graduated from Santana High School in Santee, Calif., in 1991. She attended Grossmont Junior College.

In 1996, Heather returned to Rapid City to live with and care for her Grandma Mary. She was a devoted granddaughter and loved caring for

others. On Dec. 5, 1998, she married the love of her life, Matthew J. Holt, at Atonement Lutheran Church. To this union was born Jasmin Fae Holt on Nov. 20, 2000. Heather considered this to be her greatest accomplishment!

In addition to being a wife and mother, she loved life to the greatest. She had a passion for animals as was evidenced by her many pets that were part of her life. She had a caring heart that always provided for others. She especially was drawn to children with special needs and to the elderly. She touched many and will be remembered for these gifts.

Education was an important part of life to Heather. She loved to read and learn. She recently took sign-language classes and hoped to become an interpreter. She also loved to teach and volunteered her time with preschoolers and youth group at Atonement Lutheran Church. She was a people person who made conversations easy and friendships lasting. At the time of her death, she was employed by Osteoporosis Screening Center as a Dexa Tech.

She is survived by her husband, Matt, and baby daughter, Jasmin, Rapid City; her parents, Peg Dalzell, San Diego, Calif., and Robert J. and Lynda (Lengkeek) Grass, Rapid City; two brothers, Gunnar Grass, Rapid City, and Robert C. Grass, stationed at Cherry Point, N.C.; one sister, Lyndsay Grass, Rapid City; paternal grandmother, Mary Grass, Rapid City; maternal grandmother, Alberta Dalzell, Lemmon; father and mother-in-law, Lonnie and Kathie Holt, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; and her extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Robert M. Grass, and her maternal grandfather, Hugh C. Dalzell, and one cousin, Brandon Dalzell.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, March 4, in the Chapel of Light at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City. A prayer service will follow at 7 p.m. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at Atonement Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jon Mapa and Pastor Joann Conroy officiating. Interment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for her daughter, Jasmin.

She had fought the good fight, she has finished the race, she has kept the faith.

Kenneth C. Johnson

FAITH — Funeral services for Kenneth C. Johnson, 81, of Faith, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the Community Legion Hall in Faith. Pastor Harold Delbridge will officiate, with burial at the Faith Cemetery.

Kenneth Cecil Johnson was born near Faith, S.D., on Jan. 27, 1921, to Chester Arthur and Kate (Spilman) Johnson. He spent his entire life on the ranch 18 miles southeast of Faith until ill health forced him and Carol to move into Faith two and one-half years ago.

He attended grade school at rural Mud Butte near his home, and, in 1940, graduated from a short course in Agriculture at SDSU in Brookings where he also participated in the ROTC Program.

Kenneth married Carol Frame on Nov. 21, 1940, at Sturgis. Their first home was a sheep wagon that they purchased, along with a few sheep and cattle. They lived and worked with Chester on the ranch until 1943 when the Chester Johnsons moved to the Black Hills. Later, Kenneth and Carol purchased the ranch and have operated it since that time, raising sheep and cattle for a number of years, then switching to only cattle.

Kenneth loved the ranch and tending to the livestock. He was a self-taught mechanic and could repair almost anything. He enjoyed visits from friends and family and a cup of coffee was always a must for anyone who stopped to visit.

He passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the Beverly Healthcare Center in Rapid City.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; two sons, Dennis and wife Welma of Arvada, Colo., and Dean and his wife Judy of Faith; two daughters, Arlyce Krause and husband Butch, Faith, and Cheryl Schmidt and husband Darold of Rapid City; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Beverly and husband Dan Lindblom, Rapid City, Gertrude Trask, Custer, Thelma and husband Jim Frame, Rapid City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His parents, two brothers, Daniel and Russell, one sister, Ethel Lammers, and one nephew preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, March 4, and from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, at Faith Area Memorial Chapel in Faith.

A memorial has been established.

Erlys M. Wenzlick

KEYSTONE — Erlys M. Wenzlick, 71, Keystone, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include five sons, Larry Wenzlick, Keystone, Richard Wenzlick and Gary Wenzlick, both of Johnson Creek, Wis., James Wenzlick, Hermosa, and Dale Wenzlick, Brunswick, Maine; two daughters, Vicki Wenzlick, Denton, Texas, and Kathleen Fisher, Burlington, N.J.; one brother, Gene Shirk, St. Louis, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Hermosa, with the Rev. Herb Cleveland officiating. Inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 8, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Magdalena ‘Maggie' Sathren

SHERIDAN, Wyo. — Magdalena "Maggie" Sathren, 85, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County, Sheridan, Wyo.

Mrs. Sathren was born on July 2, 1916, in Linton, N.D., to Frederich and Karolina (Frey) Schnaible. Maggie married Olvie B. Sathren in Willow City, N.D., in 1938. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City, S.D. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, dancing, music, cooking, baking and canning, and she loved her grandchildren.

Mrs. Sathren was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and eight sisters.

She is survived by her husband, Olvie, of Sheridan; her daughter Sandra Hoffman and husband Ernie of Sheridan; her granddaughter Traci Kroger and special friend Tony Christensen of Sheridan; and her grandson Todd Kroger and wife Spring of Rapid City.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, March 4, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with Rev. Don Brendtro and Rev. Al Jacobson officiating. Interment will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Sheridan Senior Center Day Break Program, 211 Smith Street, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Edgar Heer

BRUSH, Colo. — Edgar Heer, 81, Brush, and formerly of Rapid City, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Casa Grande Regional Medical Center in Casa Grande, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife, Grace; one daughter, Judy Hanby, Lewiston, Idaho; one son, Don, Brush; one brother, Walter, Bakersfield, Calif.; one sister, Mavis Ahartz, Edgemont, S.D., ; and five grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 7, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brush. Burial will follow at Brush Memorial Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Brush Senior Center in care of Heer Mortuary, 222 Cameron Street, Brush, CO 80723.

Katherine Weasel Bear

PINE RIDGE — Katherine Weasel Bear, 75, Pine Ridge, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

A two-night wake will begin at 11 a.m. today at Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9 a.m. Monday, March 4, at Billy Mills Hall, with Fr. Billy Pauly and Fr. Earl Kurth officiating.

Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Katherine Weasel Bear, "Wanahca Waste Win," was born on September 5, 1926, on Mission Flats to Fred and Susie (White Wolf) Waters.

On June 23, 1946, she married Cleveland Weasel Bear, and they were blessed with 14 children. Surviving her are two sons, Cleveland, Jr. of the Calico Community, and Benjamin of the #4 Community; seven daughters, Florita White Calf, Darlene, Karen, and Mary Weasel Bear, all of the #4 Community, Caroline Two Bulls of Rapid City, Carita Weasel Bear of Pine Ridge, and Trivian Bad Wound of Allen; one brother, Leroy Waters of Mission Flats; a half-sister, Jessie Left Hand of Martin; stepmother, Mary Bear Robe-Waters of Oglala; 22 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, four daughters, one son, and two grandchildren.

Katherine was a life-long resident of the Pine Ridge Reservation; she was a Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, and Best Friend to her family, relatives, and friends. In her younger days, she was a member of the Wild Bill's Wild West Show with her grandparents. She danced many years at the Cheyenne Frontier Days, and Days of '76 at Deadwood, South Dakota.

Sioux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James E. Borchert

RAPID CITY — James E. Borchert, 75, Rapid City, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He was born May 10, 1926, at Mankato, Minn., the son of Max and Oddny (Askdahl) Borchert. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from June 7, 1944, until July 26, 1946. He served on Okinawa, Iwo Jima and was on the Cleanup Task Force to Nagasaki two weeks after it was bombed. After the war, he attended S.D. School of Mines and Technology and earned a degree in metallurgical engineering. He worked in concrete and related products, living in various parts of the United States until settling in Rapid City in 1986. He was married to Charlene Mattson August 28, 1952, in Rapid City. Since returning to Rapid City he has worked with Borchert Financial Planning Services and was still active in the business.

He was a member of the Naja Shrine, Masonic Temple, SDSM&T Foundation Board, was on the Rapid City Planning and Zoning Board for many years, a member of the Elks Lodge and was a faithful member of Calvary Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife, Charlene M. Borchert, Rapid City; a son, Stephan J. Borchert and his wife Jan, Rapid City; a daughter, Michaela M. Hoss and her husband Chris, Denver, Colo.; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 4, at Calvary Lutheran Church, with Rev. Dwight Stensgaard and Rev. Tanya Rist officiating. Inurnment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to SDSM&T Foundation Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Naja Shrine Travel Fund.

Arrangements are with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

James P. Peterson

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — James "Pete" P. Peterson, 82, passed away at his home Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002.

He was born Jan. 21, 1920, in Pennington County, S.D., and was the son of the late Lars and Elida Peterson. He had been a Peninsula resident since 1944. He graduated with honors from the South Dakota School of Mines, with a degree in civil engineering. He retired in 1980, after 36 years with NACA/NASA. During his last 16 years of service at NASA, he was a chief engineer in the Aircraft Energy Efficiency Project Office at Langley. From 1981 to 1985, he was a consultant to Newport News Industrial Corp. Jim was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, where he served as treasurer under four pastors. He was an avid square dancer for more than 30 years and a member of the Swinging Squares. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Mr. Peterson is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mildred "Millie;" two children, Russell Peterson and his wife, Sandra, of Seaford and Beverly Wood and her husband, Dale, of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Ryan Wood and his wife, Jen, of Plainfield, Ill., Cristy Wood of Portsmouth, and Douglas and Billy Peterson of Seaford. He is also survived by his brother, Edward Peterson, and his wife, Rose Marie, of Rapid City, S.D.

The family received friends on Thursday, Feb. 21, at Peninsula Funeral Home. The funeral was held Friday, Feb. 22, at Resurrection Lutheran Church by the Rev. Hank Hollar. A graveside service was held after the funeral in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.

Expressions of sympathy may be in the form of memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, 895 Middle Ground Blvd., Suite 154, Newport News, VA 23606; Resurrection Lutheran Church, 765 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601; or Riverside Hospice, 500 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

Molly Rose Onken

RAPID CITY — Molly Rose Onken, 6 months, Rapid City, died Thursday, February 28, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include her parents, Timothy and Victoria Onken and her sister Morgan Onken, all of Rapid City; her maternal grandparents, Marlowe and Betty Lindstrom of Tracy, Minn.; her paternal grandparents, Les and Rose Onken of Tracy; her great-grandmother, Evelyn Yahnke of Westbrook, Minn.; several aunts and uncles, Kathy and Gary Wittnebel of Burnsville, Minn., Marc and Patty Onken of Auburn, Wash., Jim and Diane Onken of Eagle Lake, Minn., Barb and Don McKee of Albany, Minn., Brian and Linda Onken of Marshall, Minn., Brent and Julie Lindstrom of White Bear Lake, Minn., Grant and Jane Lindstrom of Knoxville, Tenn., and Brad and Elsa Lindstrom of Pensacola, Fla.; and 20 cousins.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 4, at South Canyon Lutheran Church, with Rev. Layne Nelson officiating.

A second service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Tracy Lutheran Church in Tracy, with interment at Tracy Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to Storybook Island, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Rapid City Regional Hospital, and Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
