Richard ‘Dick' Howe

RAPID CITY — Richard D. Howe, 67, of Rapid City died Thursday, February 14, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Dick was born March 19, 1934, in Pine Ridge, S.D., to Marvin and Hazel (Bowman) Howe. When Dick was a small boy, he and his sister Marva and parents lived in Lance Creek, Wyo., which at that time was a booming oil field. Dick's father and mother owned and operated a drugstore and pharmacy in Lance Creek. Dick attended the elementary schools in the Lance Creek area and went his freshman year at Manville, Wyo. During the summer of 1949, Dick and his parents and sister moved to a country home a few miles southeast of Martin to live at what later became known as the headquarters of the Howe ranch. Dick finished his three years of high school at Bennett County High School, where he was active in sports and various other school activities. Dick and his girlfriend, classmate Lois Smith, graduated in May 1952 and were married on September 14, 1952, at St. Katharine's Episcopal Church. Dick and his lovely bride, Lois, went to work for Dick's grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Tom Bowman, on their Hereford cattle ranch about 30 miles southeast of Martin in the sandhills. In the early summer of 1956, Dick and Lois moved to the Howe ranch just southeast of Martin on Little White River, where they ranched with Dick's parents for many years and ended up on their own ranch northeast of Martin on Bear Creek. In 1987, Dick and Lois leased their ranch and moved to Martin, where Dick worked at the Bennett County Hospital and Nursing Home, Martin Auction Company, and Audiss Aviation until August 1989, when they moved to Rapid City, where they were employed as assistant managers of LaCrosse Estates Apartments, of which they later became managers, before leaving LaCrosse Estates and becoming managers of Storage Unlimited. Due primarily to medical reasons, Dick retired from working at Storage Unlimited on April 13, 2001. Lois had previously retired on October 1, 1999.

Over the years, Dick has kept abreast of the changes in the cattle and aviation industries by attending short courses and seminars of both industries. Dick was an E.M.T., a member of the Bennett County Ambulance Association, and a certified Ground and Flight Instructor. Dick was active in the Episcopal Church over the years and was also active in Hospice of the Hills as a Hospice Volunteer from November 1993 to April 2000.

Survivors include his wife, Lois, of Rapid City, S.D.; daughter Dicksy Noyes and husband Harvey of Marshall, Minn.; sons Craig of Rapid City and Kent of Escondido, Calif.; sister Marva Hicks and husband Ross of Martin, S.D.; and mother Hazel Howe of New Underwood, S.D. Ruby Alice Wilson

RAPID CITY - Ruby Alice Wilson passed away Monday afternoon, February 11, 2002, at Westhills Village Care Center in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Ruby was born September 8, 1907, in Elm Creek, Nebraska, to Ed and Maude Sandstead, the fifth of six children. She grew up in Bethany, near Lincoln, Nebraska. She attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a teaching degree.

After graduation, she taught music in the public school system in western and central Nebraska. In the early 1930s, she met Don Wilson, and the couple was married in 1932.

After several years in Nebraska, where Don worked with the telephone company (Omaha, North Platte and later Grand Island), the family, then including sons Don and Mark, was transferred to Rapid City, South Dakota, where they lived the next 20 years. Here a son, Roger, was born. It was during this period that Ruby made many life-long friends in western South Dakota, often while playing cards. She and Don played well as a team and won several contract bridge trophies in South Dakota during the 1950s.

In 1963, Don was transferred to Sioux Falls, and in 1965, the couple retired to Paris, Illinois. They found a century-old Victorian home, from which they operated an antiques business for several years. After Don's death in 1973, Ruby returned to Rapid City, where she continued in the antiques business for the next 15 years.

In addition to being in the antiques business, Ruby was an accomplished musician (violin and piano). She taught music in the school systems as well as being involved in the church and youth choirs. She was an expert seamstress, often sewing many of her own clothes. She mastered the art of colonial rug-braiding to the level that for many years she taught classes to people as far away as 75 miles. She decorated not only her own home but her children's homes with these unique and beautiful rugs. She was a person of uncommon creative talents.

Ruby enjoyed reading and flower gardening. However, one of her favorite pastimes was any card playing, especially bridge, poker and gin rummy. She loved to travel, making many trips abroad to purchase antiques as well as to explore the world.

Ruby is survived by three sons, Don Jr., Rapid City, Mark, Spokane, Wash., and Dr. Roger (wife Diane), Rapid City; two granddaughters, Dr. Elizabeth Kieffer (Dr. Joseph), Lakenheath AFB, England, and Katherine Kieffer (Chris), Lawrence, Kan.; one brother, Russell Sandstead, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, February 18, 2002, 2 p.m., at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, with Fr. David Cameron officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Emmanuel Episcopal Church and the Rapid City Public Library.

Arrangements are with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
