Lemoine Trout

RAPID CITY — Lemoine Trout, 58, Rapid City, died at his Rapid City residence Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002.

He was born March 24, 1943, at Lincoln, Nebraska, the son of Norval R. and Viola D. (Scott) Trout. Lemoine graduated from Alliance, Neb., High School in 1961 and received his BS Degree from Black Hills State University in 1966 and his Master of Education from Black Hills State University in 1971.

Lemoine married Shirley Waters on July 3, 1964, in Rapid City.

Lemoine began his teaching and coaching career in 1966 in McCook, Nebraska, moving on to North Platte for two years in 1967. In 1969 the Trout family came to Rapid City, where Lemoine coached and taught at Central High School for twelve years before coming over to Stevens in 1982. There he became head track coach in 1989, where his athletes won numerous conference, regional, and state championships, including six consecutive girls' state titles from 1996 through 2001 and the boys' title in 2001. Lemoine received many honors for his coaching duties, including conference and region Coach of the Year three times each, state girls' track Coach of the Year in 2001, plus several other regional and national coaching association awards. Hall of Fame inductions include the Black Hills State University Athletic Hall in 2000 and the Rapid City Sports/Officials Hall in 2001. He was named Teacher of the Year twice at Central and once at Stevens.

He was a member of Canyon Lake United Methodist Church, RCEA, SDEA, NEA, South Dakota Coaches Association, National High School Coaches Association and Elks 1187.

Lemoine recognized that as a father, teacher and coach, the most forthright way to instill his cherished values of hard work and personal integrity was to lead by example. He worked relentlessly even through the most taxing stages of his cancer treatment — preparing and grading assignments, creating workout schedules, attending student performances and events, raising funds. For his sons, students and athletes, as long as they put an honest effort into their tasks, no matter their level of aptitude or talent, he was proud of the outcome.

Lemoine was always willing to give credit where credit was due, except to himself; his profound sense of humility deferring to the efforts of his students and athletes, his fellow teachers and coaches. He loved what he did, though, and agonized over the decision to retire, realizing that it meant he would never be able to coach again.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley, Rapid City; son Greg, his wife, Tammy, and their children, Megan and Tyler, of Casper, Wyo.; son Tim of Waltham, Mass.; son Jeff, his wife, Tina, and their daughter, Sydney, of Sioux Falls; mother, Viola, of McCook, Neb.; and sister, Fauna Allen, and her husband, Jim, of Coleville, Wash. He was preceded in death by his father, Norval.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Carol Heier Gymnasium at Stevens High School, with Rev. Bob Ruedebusch officiating.
