Ulalla Drake

RAYTOWN, Mo. -- Ulalla D. Drake, age 77, of Raytown, MO and formerly of Yankton, SD passed away early Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at her residence in Raytown, MO.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2005, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with Rev. Dave Lund officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories, Yankton, SD.

Visitations will be 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2005, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with the family present at 7:00 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Merkel, Nick Merkel, Alex Merkel, J.R. Crosley, Justin Crosley, Brandon Drake and Nathan Drake. Honorary pallbearer will be Herbie Knutson.

Ulalla was born November 22, 1927, to Theodore and Frances (Tobin) Buehler in Wilson, KS. Known as Lalla, after her marriage to Robert Drake on November 4, 1945, in Wilson, KS, she moved to Niobrara, NE and lived there for a number of years. Lalla and Robert raised 6 children in Niobrara, NE. She attended LPN school in Norfolk, NE. She then worked at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton for 18 years where they made their home after moving from Niobrara, NE. In 1993, Lalla moved to the Kansas City, MO area to be near family members and spend her remaining years. The last year of her life, she very much enjoyed the "Red Hat" Society at her residence, Elliot Place of Raytown, MO. Lalla enjoyed everything, but especially loved collecting dolls. She loved to visit with people and show them her dolls.

Her memory is cherished by two sons: Ken (Marian) Drake of Omaha, NE and Tom (Julie) Drake of Cincinnati, OH; four daughters: Karen (Chris) Christensen of Raytown, MO, Peggy (Dale) Terry Castle Rock, CO, Bonnie (Earl) Merkel of Zionsville, IN, and Barbara Drake of Teutopoles, IL; 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; four brothers: Dale (Edna) Buehler of Wilson, KS, Ted (Doris) Buehler of Russell, KS, Orval Buehler of Morrowville, KS, and Glen (Betty) Buehler of LaHabra, CA, and one sister, Joyce (Bill) Podlena of Wilson, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Memorials are directed to Kansas City Hospice, 3100 NE 83rd St., Suite 2300, Kansas City, MO 64119 or Cancer Action, 13905 E. 39th Street, Independence, MO 64055.

Edwin Koerner

Edwin Koerner, age 90, of Yankton, South Dakota died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2005, at Riverview Park Reformed Church in Yankton with the Reverend Rodney Veldhuizen officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton.

Visitation is from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with the family present from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Pallbearers are David Koerner, Jared Skarin, David Just, Dan Marostica, Dave Moore and Wayne Rames.

Edwin was born December 26, 1914, near Bridgewater, South Dakota to Frederick and Carolina Koerner. He was baptized on March 28, 1915, in the Hope Reformed Church at Emery, South Dakota and was later confirmed on June 22, 1930. He grew up on a farm near Bridgewater and graduated from Bridgewater High School on May 17,1934. He attended Nettelton Business College in Sioux Falls for a short time and then moved back home to help his dad on the farm. For a few years, he also worked at the Shanard Elevator in Bridgewater as a bookkeeper. On November 24, 1950, he married Agnes Buchholz at Avon, South Dakota. After their marriage, they farmed near Emery, South Dakota and later moved to Avon. Due to health reasons, he moved to Yankton in 1965. He worked at various jobs as a custodian until he retired from Kolberg Manufacturing in 1980. He was a member of Riverview Park Reformed Church. He loved his grandchildren and loved watching their activities as they grew up. He enjoyed music and was a volunteer for Fiddle Contest for many years.

Edwin is survived by one son and his wife, Raymond and Laurie Koerner of Yankton; two daughters and their husbands, Shirley and Dave Moore of Shenandoah, Iowa and Marlene and Wayne Rames of Yankton; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; one step-great-grandson; and one sister, Beatrice Koerner of Bridgewater, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Agnes on September 18, 2001; one son, William Koerner; six brothers and four sisters.

Marjorie Brunick

Marjorie M. Brunick, age 79 of Yankton, South Dakota died on Thursday, April 14, 2005, at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2005, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton with the Reverend David Wildermuth officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton.

Visitation is from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home, Yankton with the family present from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Brian Risling, Jack Frick, Ray Tweedy, Lloyd Brunick, Todd Brunick and George Brunick.

Marjorie M. Brunick was born on September 8, 1925, in Wynot, Nebraska, to Nels H. and Verna R. (Fueston) Johnson. She moved from Nebraska to South Dakota as a young girl and lived in the Vermillion and Meckling areas. She attended Westerville school, Spirit Mound School, Lincoln School southwest of Meckling and Gayville High School. She married Stanley B. Brunick on September 20, 1942, in Hartington, Nebraska. She and Stanley moved to Centerville, SD in 1946 and lived there until moving to Yankton in 1951. She worked as a cook at the Grove School in Yankton and also at Stuelpnagels. She then worked as the bookkeeper for her husband at Stan's Champlain Service Station. From 1975 to 1993 she worked as a bookkeeper for Jack Frick. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton.

Marjorie is survived by her son, Clifford C. Brunick of Yankton; three grandchildren: Susan LaFave of Pierre, South Dakota, Brian Risling of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Todd Brunick of Yankton; three great-grandchildren; and a special son-in-law, Dallas Risling of Yankton.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley on January 18, 1988; and daughter, Karen Risling on October 23, 1998.

Deanna Thompson

VERMILLION -- Deanna K. Thompson, 64, of Vermillion died Friday, April 15, 2005, at Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital.

Deanna was born September 25, 1940, at Vermillion, SD, to Clifford Brunick and Opal Lethcoe. She received a GED from Vermillion High School. She married Millard Thompson Dec. 22, 1956, Vermillion. She retired in 1992 from USD Food Service as a baker. She was a member of Eagles Auxiliary since 1983, where she was a Trustee from 1986-89; and was named Mrs. Eagle in 1989. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Vermillion. She loved Bingo, playing cards and her dog, Aska.

She is survived by her husband, Millard "Sonny" Thompson, Vermillion; two daughters: Teresa Hays, Vermillion and Brenda Sealey of Volin; son, Keith Thompson of Vermillion; foster daughter, Merri Kissick of Cheyenne, Wyo.; brother, Richard Brunick of Anaheim, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather, Alvin "Swede" Johnson.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at First Baptist Church, Vermillion, with the Rev. Sandy Aakre officiating. Burial is in the Bluff View Cemetery, Vermillion, SD.

Visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2005, at the Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion, and from 6 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the church.

Levi Palmlund

DESMET -- Levi Palmlund, 83, of DeSmet died Friday (April 15, 2005) at the Good Samaritan Center, DeSmet.

Services are pending with the Osthus Funeral Home, DeSmet.

Sanford Ufford

VERMILLION -- Sanford C. Ufford, 71, of Vermillion, SD, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital.

Sanford was born March 7, 1934, at Vermillion, SD, to Frank S. Ufford and Glenna Hastings. He attended Vermilllion High School. He farmed with his father and brother for 68 years. He was a member of Missouri River Valley Association of the Deaf and the South Dakota Association of the Deaf. He was also a member of First Baptist Church, Vermillion.

He is survived by his brother, George (Gladys) of Vermillion; his sister, Margaret (Bert) Weinstein of Santa Ana, Ca.; nephews: Don and Alex Ufford and Greg and Eric Weinstein; and niece, Gail (Mike) Cutler.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2005, at First Baptist Church, Vermillion, with the Rev. Sandy Aakre officiating. Burial is in the Bluff View Cemetery, Vermillion.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion.

Memorials may be directed to Missouri River Valley Association of the Deaf, the South Dakota Association of the Deaf or Sioux Valley Hospice.

Eleanor Conway

WAGNER -- Eleanor Conway, 90, of Wagner died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at the Bormann Manor in Parkston, SD.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2005, at St. John the Baptist in Wagner, with burial in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to noon on Monday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner.

Eleanor Conway, daughter of William and Bridget (Kavaney) Conway, was born October 16, 1914, in Kimball, SD. .

Eleanor grew up in the Plankinton and Kimball areas. She graduated from Plankinton High School and then worked in the Aurora County Treasurer office. Eleanor later worked in various theaters for many years. Her later years were spent doing something she so enjoyed ... helping the elderly as a companion and housekeeper. Eleanor also enjoyed listening to music and music boxes. Eleanor retired in May of 1988 and returned to Wagner to be close to her sister, Loretto, who passed away November 7, 1990.

Thankful for having shared her life are a nephew, Ronald and wife, Mary Anne of Slayton, MN; and niece, Mrs. Edward (Beverly) Conway of Bridgewater, SD; and many great nieces, nephews and friends.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: William and Sylvester; three sisters: Loretto Conway, Ethelrita McShane and Clarissa French; two sisters-in-law: Violet Conway and Nila Conway; and several nieces and nephews.

Roy H. Nielsen

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Former Yankton businessman Roy H. Nielsen, 86, died Friday morning in San Diego CA.

He was born in Yankton on Aug. 27, 1918, in Yankton to Mr. and Mrs. Niels Nielsen. After graduating from Yankton High School in the Class of 1937, Roy attended the University of South Dakota, earning a BS in Business Administration in 1941.

Roy immediately left for service with the Army Air Corps and graduated as a pilot in February, 1942. Later that year, in July, he flew with the 97th Bomb Group to England. He was among the first pilots to guide a B-17 in combat over occupied Europe, flying on 8th AF commander General Ira Eaker's wing in the first American raid flown by USA planes out of England. Later that summer his group took part in the bloody invasion of North Africa.

After returning to the United States, he was married to Valborg Johansen in Tyler, Minn. on Oct. 3, 1943. They had two children, Carol Lisbona, who with her husband Linn, resides in Prescott AZ, and his son, Bob, and his wife Annete, who reside in Fallbrook CA. Their two grandchildren, Nils and Birke also reside in Fallbrook.

After WWII, Roy returned to Yankton and went into the sporting goods business in partnership with his brother, Howard. in 1956 he had the opportunity to return to flying and he became a corporate pilot for Air Research and Development in Los Angeles, where he became a well-known pilot for many dignitarties including Ronald Reagan (before he became president,) the Barron Hilton family, Howard Hughes and many movie stars, flying throughout the world.

He retired after 20 years and became a resident of the Rancho Bernardo district of San Diego, where he passed away.

Roy was preceded in death by his father, Niels, a well-known Yankton businessman in 1946; his mother, Ida, who died in 1983; his brother, Bob, who also was an 8th Air Force B-17 pilot, but was killed while on a raid over Germany in early November, 1944; and another brother, Willard, who died in Yankton in March, 1998.

In addition to his wife, Valborg, his daughter, Carol, and son Robert and his family, Roy is survived by his sister, Viginia (Don) Couch and brother, Howard, of Yankton.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Carl Neth

SCOTLAND -- Carl Neth, 97, of Scotland, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at the Scotland Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral service is 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005, at United Church of Christ, Scotland, South Dakota, with Pastor Del Neumeister officiating. Music will be provided by organist Cindy Hight and soloist David Finck, accompanied by Shelley Finck. Interment is in the Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, South Dakota.

Casketbearers are Steve Neth, Mike Neth, Roger Neth, John Neth, Richard Neth and Paul Neth.

Visitation is from 3:00 p.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2005, at Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel, Scotland, South Dakota.

Carl Neth, son of John and Barbara (Gall) Neth, was born on December 7, 1907. Carl grew up in rural Scotland on the family farm homesteaded by his grandfather. He was baptized and confirmed in the Odessa Lutheran Church in rural Scotland. He married Ruth Gemar on September 16, 1932. Carl and Ruth raised their daughter, Norma, on the family farm where he continued to farm until 1970 when he sold the farm to his nephew, Elmer Neth, and moved to the city of Scotland. During his life, Carl served on a local rural school board and numerous boards and commissions related to rural and agricultural concerns. All through his life, he was an active member of Bethany Reformed Church and later the Scotland United Church of Christ. He served on the consistory of both Bethany Reformed Church and the Scotland U.C.C. He also served as a member on the building committee for the Scotland U.C.C. Carl continuously volunteered for many extra tasks around the church building and grounds. After moving to town in 1970, he worked for Redi-Mix and Cargill for a number of years. He developed a liking for wood refinishing, which he continued to do until 1999. He had many interests and enjoyed music, traveling and gardening. Carl was always willing to lend a helping hand. He had a very keen memory and was a storehouse of local history. His church and his faith were always very important in his life. Carl became very aware of what a great asset the Scotland Good Samaritan Center was to the community when his wife, Ruth, entered the center following a stroke. For almost 4 years, he faithfully visited her every day, especially in the evening, until her death in April 2000. Shortly following Ruth's death, Carl moved into the Good Samaritan Assisted Living Center that had newly opened. He was a textbook advocate for the Good Samaritan Center.

Carl is survived by his daughter, Norma (Henry) Heinbuch of Burnsville, Minnesota; three grandchildren: Kevin, Denise and Janelle; three great-granddaughters: Nicole, Bethany and Alexa; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, his parents, four brothers and six sisters.

Geraldine 'Deanie' Fitch

Geraldine (Deanie) Fitch, age 70, of Yankton passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2005, at the Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Paul Opsahl officiating.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Geraldine (Deanie) Fitch was born in Perkins, SD to Herbert and Fern (Lange) Fitch on October 3, 1934. She attended grade school in Springfield, SD and high school in Wagner, SD. She married Jamie Bebout in which three children were born, Carol Ann, Derald George and Anita Fern. Her education continued at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and she later joined the Peace Corps serving in the Philippines in 1984. When she arrived back in the United States, she used her Masters degree in Psychology and Sociology at the VA in Hot Springs, SD. Upon retiring, she returned to Yankton due to failing health and to be near her daughter, Carol Ann and family. Deanie suffered a brain aneurysm on Saturday, April 16th and was flown to Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls where her family gathered to be at her side at the time of her death.

Those who will cherish her memory are her children: Carol Ann (Larry) Olson of Yankton, SD, Derald George (Julie) Bebout of Woonsocket, SD and Anita Fern (Ed) McKinney of Arizona; her precious grandchildren: Michele Kay (BJ) Shelton of Arizona, Tanner James Berle (Lisa) Olson of Yankton, SD, Anne Bebout of Woonsocket, SD and Tanner Jay McKinney of Arizona; three sisters: Doris Kulhavy of Coleman, SD, Dianne Knigge of Fort Pierre, SD and Yvonne Lee (Keith) Franke of Belle Fourche, SD; and one brother, Derald (Shirley) Fitch of Lombard, IL; many nieces and nephews and a host of loving relatives and friends.
