Charles Christen

HOT SPRINGS - Charles Christen, 74, Hot Springs and formerly of Lemmon, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Hillcrest Care Center in Hettinger, N.D.

Survivors include his stepmother, Alta Christen, Lemmon; one son, Arden Saunders, Hettinger; one stepdaughter, Judith Randall, Prairie City; one stepson, Norman Woodbury, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; one brother, Dr. Arden Christen, Indianapolis; one half-sister, Dianne Helfeinstine, Aberdeen; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

His wife, Marjorie Woodbury Christen, preceded him in death.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947.

Graveside services, with military honors by Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with Chaplain Moe Greiner officiating. Family and friends may meet at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis before going to the cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Gideons International.

Jessie Beatrice Burton

GREELEY, Colo. - Jessie Beatrice Burton, 91, Greeley and formerly of South Dakota, died Nov. 9, 2001, in Greeley.

Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Wright, Long Beach, Calif., and June Clinebelle, Kennewick, Wash.; one son, William Jones, Marsing, Idaho; one daughter, Freda Dibble, Edgemont, S.D.; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

No services were held.

Burial was at Edgemont.

Orville Langdeau Sr.

LOWER BRULE - Orville Langdeau Sr., 75, Lower Brule, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include seven children, Orville Langdeau Jr., Joseph Langdeau, Stuart Langdeau, Steven Langdeau and Darla Langdeau, all of Lower Brule, Loye Lee Whitcomb, Griswold, Conn., and Diana Langdeau, Bagley, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

His wife, Velma Irene Langdeau, preceded him in death.

He served in the U.S. Army from December 1945 to January 1946.

A two-day wake will begin at 5 p.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lower Brule, with rosaries at 7 p.m. today and at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at the church.

Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel of Pierre is in charge of arrangements.

Albert Charles Lulow

RAPID CITY - Albert Charles Lulow, 80, Rapid City, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include six brothers, Guy Lulow, Corpus Christi, Texas, Glenn Lulow, Rushville, Neb., Floyd Lulow, Hay Springs, Neb., Kenneth Lulow, Gateway, Ore., Stanley Lulow, Dallas, Ore., and Melvin Lulow, Plymouth, Wis.; one sister, Doris Abbott, Gordon, Neb.; and two daughters, Barbara Jones, Rapid City, and Crystal Lulow, Gregg, Ind.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City, with the Rev. Brian Christensen officiating.

Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

James Alvah 'Babe' Reynolds Jr.

MURDO - James Alvah "Babe" Reynolds Jr., 86, Pierre and formerly of Murdo, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at St. Mary's Healthcare Center in Pierre.

Survivors include one son, Lyle Reynolds, Greeley, Colo.; two daughters, Linda Lee, Marietta, Georgia, and Lea Reynolds, Elk Point; one stepdaughter, Charlene Ortman, Sioux Falls; five grand-children; and several great-grandchildren.

His wife, Verna I. Newsam Reynolds, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. CST Friday, Feb. 8, at United Methodist Church in Murdo, with the Rev. Morris Nelson officiating.

Rush Funeral Home of Philip is in charge of arrangements.

Martin J. 'Bugs' Mesteth Sr.

MANDERSON - Martin J. "Bugs" Mesteth Sr., 33, Manderson, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, in Manderson.

Survivors include his parents, Max and Cecelia Mesteth, Manderson; one son, Martin Mesteth Jr., Wounded Knee; one daughter, Ashley Mesteth, Wounded Knee; two brothers, Marquis Mesteth Sr. and Winston Mesteth, both of Manderson; two sisters, Christina Bores A Hole and Carol Mesteth, both of Manderson; and three grandchildren.

A two-night wake will begin at 4 p.m. today at Wounded Knee District School in Manderson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at the school, with the Rev. Ted Zeurn and the Rev. Jim Ryan officiating. Orvile Looking Horse, Pete Catches and Wilmer Mesteth will officiate at traditional services.

Burial will be at the Mesteth family cemetery in White Horse Creek.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Delores Gorman

HILL CITY - Delores Gorman, 62, Hill City, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include two sons, Gary Gorman, Rapid City, and Allen Gorman, Spanaway, Wash.; one daughter, Lynn Beasley, St. Robert, Mo.; one brother, Fred Schauer, Billings, Mont.; one sister,

Ramona Roll, Onalaska, Wis.; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Lyndell Smith

CUSTER - Lyndell Smith, 82, of Custer, died February 3, 2002, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Custer, S.D.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 7, 2002, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Custer, with Rev. Robert Anderson officiating.

Lyndell was born in Philip, South Dakota, on April 10, 1919, to Jacob W. and Elma (Bowman) Smith. He was raised in Philip and Grindstone, South Dakota, later moving to Stockton, California, in 1939. After high school, he went on to college for three and a half years, majoring in mathematics and receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree AB. Lyndell was a bookkeeper/cost accountant for the Continental Can Company JI Case for 5 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in New Zealand, New Caledonia, New Guinea, the Philippines and Okinawa from 1942 until his discharge in 1945. Lyndell married Evelyn Bateman on June 19, 1947, in Cottonwood, South Dakota. They have been living in Custer since 1965, when they moved from Stockton, California. Lyndell was an AACS high speed Ham Radio operator and an Amateur Radio Operator with the call letters WAONZA, and he was also a County Hunter.

Lyndell was a member of the Custer Senior Citizens Center.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; sons, Ronald Hill (wife Lana), Whitewood, Edward Smith (wife JoAnn), Hendrickson, Nev., Darcy Smith (wife Cynthia), Custer, Jerry Smith, Hot Springs, and Charles Smith, Custer; two nephews; one niece; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established in Lyndell's memory to benefit Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Custer.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Custer.

Franklin D. Whitaker

RAPID CITY - Franklin D. Whitaker, 68, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Black Hills Health Care in Fort Meade.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Jerred, Rapid City; four children, Randy Whitaker and Brenda Juers, both of Lake Forest, Calif., Frank Whitaker, Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., and Misha Manning, Las Vegas; two brothers, Amel Whitaker, Livermore, Calif., and Steve Whitaker, Albuquerque, N.M.; four sisters, Sharon Bilyeu, Buffalo, Ind., Ethel Gentner, Adrian, Mont., Barb McKnight, Valparaiso, Ind., and Carol Feltman, Fairfield, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

The body will be cremated.

Arrangements are pending with Kinkade Funeral Chapel of Sturgis.

John B. Heasley

ONIDA - John B. Heasley, 81, Onida, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta Heasley, Onida; two daughters, Janet Welborn, Agua Prieta, Mexico, and Judy Shafer, Boone, Iowa; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

His first wife, Dora Mae Perry, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Emanuel Mennonite Brethren Church in Onida.

Burial will follow at Onida Cemetery.

Florence Maxwell

RAPID CITY - Florence Maxwell, 90, Rapid City, died Monday, February 4, 2002, at a local nursing home.

Florence was born March 17, 1911, near Hoven, S.D. Her entire existence revolved around her family.

She loved to garden, bake, play bingo and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother to her husband, Dick; her children, Karolyn and her husband, Art Olmstead, Joe and wife Marlene, Richard (Dale) and his wife, Rogene, and Donald. She especially loved her grandkids, Ardee, Blake, Michelle, Brian, Kim, Molly, Megan and her great-grandchild, Zachary. She is also survived by two sisters, Adelaide Wiess of Hoven, S.D., and Ann Marsh of Montebello, Calif.

She was preceded in death by husband Dick, eight brothers and sisters and her parents.

Visitation will be Tuesday, February 5, 2002, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, February 6, 2002, at 10 a.m. at St. Therese the Little Flower Catholic Church, with Father Bryan Lane as celebrant.

Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.

A memorial has been established for Hospice of the Hills.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
