Frank Stanley Rothleutner

PRINGLE — Frank Stanley Rothleutner, 66, Pringle, died Jan. 29, 2002, at his home attended by his wife and children after a long battle with congestive heart failure and diabetes.

Frank Stanley Rothleutner was born July 16, 1935, at Douglas, Wyo., son of Frank A. and Clara (Withrow) Rothleutner. He grew up on the Rothleutner Ranch in Converse County near Bill, Wyo.

Frank served in the U.S. Army.

He was a heavy-equipment operator for Summit Construction and other private contractors.

He spent his life ranching, logging, custom haying, sawmill work and mechanic. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, camping, woodworking and gardening. He also enjoyed music and loved to dance.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Frank is survived by his wife, Ruby Rothleutner, Pringle; four sons, Lyle Rothleutner, Igloo, Randy Rothleutner, Chugiak, Alaska, Kurt Rothleutner, Sykesville, Md., and Eric Rothleutner, Pringle; two daughters, Melody Rothleutner and Rikka Rothleutner, both of Pringle; four brothers, Leo Rothleutner, Phoenix, Ariz., Robert Rothleutner and John Rothleutner, both of Gillette, and Fred Rothleutner, Douglas, Wyo.; six sisters, Barbara Caylor, Custer, Mary Jo Valentine of Wisconsin, Joann Apel, Mills, Wyo., Theresa England, Milford, Ind., Hatti Tanner, Bloomington, Ind., and Carolyn Conway of Oklahoma; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Bill Rothleutner and Dave Rothleutner.

Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Pringle Fire Hall. Doors open at 4 p.m. for visitation with friends and family. Meal will be provided by Pringle Fire Auxiliary. Inurnment will be at a later date at Pringle Cemetery.

Rooks-McColley Chapel of the Hills in Custer is in charge of arrangements.

Myrna Mordhorst Burns

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. — Myrna Mordhorst Burns joined her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, January 29, 2002.

Myrna was born July 28, 1938, to Charles and Anna Mordhorst in Rapid City, South Dakota, the ninth of ten children. She attended and graduated from Rapid City High School in 1956.

Myrna worked for Bell Telephone until 1972.

She moved to Tucson, Arizona, and with her husband Jack started a construction business. They moved to Sierra Vista, Arizona, in 1978, continuing in construction until retirement in 1995. Myrna was an active Realtor until retirement. Myrna and Jack purchased a home in the Black Hills in 1999 and spent summers here with her family.

She is survived by husband Jack; daughter Denise (Chuck) Haney of Phoenix; Jack's daughter Stephanie (David) Lamons and son Greg (Mimi) Burns; grandchildren Dutch and Remy Lamons and Emma and Irish Burns; sisters Jeanette Lindquist, Betty Grube, Mary Lou Balcom and Doris Shaub; and brothers Victor Mordhorst (deceased), Mern Mordhorst, Robert Mordhorst, Dale Mordhorst and Chuck Mordhorst.

Myrna's hope was that everyone would be encouraged to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior in order to know their future is secure and heaven will be their home.

A memorial service will be held Feb. 8, 2002, at First Assembly of God Church, 840 N. Lenzner, Sierra Vista, AZ 85635, with Pastor Erik Powell officiating.

Fannie Vina Chief Bear

ALLEN — Fannie Vina Chief Bear, 96, Allen, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in Scottsbluff, Neb.

Survivors include three grandsons, Roger LaPointe, Scottsbluff, and Joseph Chief Bear and William Chief Bear, both of Hisle, and two granddaughters, Susie Chief Bear, Scottsbluff, and Darlene Bull Bear, Kyle.

A one-night wake will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Inestimable Gift Church in Allen.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the church, with the Rev. Daniel Makes Good officiating.

Burial will be at the Chief Bear family cemetery in Hisle.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Teddy Robert Williams

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Teddy Robert Williams, 11, Great Falls and formerly of Rapid City, died Tuesday,

Jan. 29, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his father, Teddy Williams, Great Falls; his mother, Victoria Vaughn; his paternal grandparents, Lorraine and Ted Williams, Rapid City; and his maternal grandparents, Michael and Virginia Vaughn.

Visitation was Friday, Feb. 1, at Schnider Funeral Home in Great Falls.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Great Falls.

Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Marlene LaVonne Lammers

RAPID CITY — Marlene LaVonne Lammers, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter and sister passed away January 31, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Marlene was born September 28, 1935, in Crawford, Nebraska, and was raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. She attended Holy Rosary Mission, where she received her high school diploma. She is survived by her husband, Lloyd, whom she met in Boise, Idaho, while he was in the United States Air Force. Together they shared a whirlwind romance and were married November 3, 1955, for a total of 47 years.

She is also survived by her four children, their spouses, children and grandchildren, respectively: Colleen, her husband, Larry, her children Rose and husband Kevin and Joshua, Tim, his wife, Michelle, their children, T.J., his wife, Joy, Jeanette and Tashina, her husband, Ed, Michael, his wife, Candice Estes Lammers, their children, Ezra, Conan, Schuyler and Thorson, Ken and wife Linda, their children, Amanda and Tyler. Marlene also has four great-grandchildren, Leaha, Taylor, Megan and Ericka.

Marlene is also survived by her mother, Charlotte Pulliam Pourier, sister Loretta Smallwood of Rapid City, brother Robert Pourier and wife Barbara of Sierra Vista, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her father, Alfonso Pourier, and a brother, Leroy Pourier.

Marlene had a gusto for life, and she lived it with great enthusiasm. She was skillful in many crafts such as sewing, knitting and Indian beadwork. She loved to fish, loved to play bingo and was always ready for many trips to the casinos in Deadwood. She was completely full of fun and loved music. She laughed easily and often — a strong, contagious laugh that made people laugh with her. Being in her company was a complete joy.

Marlene took pride in her Native American heritage. She dearly loved traditional Indian drum music. She embraced the Lakota traditions and beliefs and encouraged her family to do the same. But for all that she was, her family was the center of her world. She adored and was so proud of each and every one of them.

Her passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, and her family and friends will miss her more than words can ever express. Heaven, however, is in for a wonderful treat.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2002, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, and one hour before services.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home, with Fr. Pat McCorkell S.J. officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Teresa A. Carley

RAPID CITY — Teresa A. Carley, 88, Rapid City and

formerly of Philip, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Merrill Carley, Rapid City; one daughter, Merrilyn Schroeder, Rapid City; one son, Philip Carley, Milesville; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at Rush Funeral Home in Philip and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, with a 7 p.m. funeral vigil service, at Our Lady's Chapel of Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City.

Visitation will continue for one hour before Mass of Christian Burial, which will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the chapel, with Msgr. Michael Woester and the Rev. Tony Grossenburg officiating.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Masonic Cemetery in Philip.

A memorial has been established.

Frank L. ‘Les' Hendrickson Jr.

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Frank L. "Les" Hendrickson Jr., 74, Kennewick and formerly of Spearfish, S.D., and Rapid City, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, in Kennewick.

Survivors include one sister, Edna Mae Phillips, Sheridan, Wyo.; seven children, Cheryl Horne, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Allen Hendrickson, Kennewick, Robert Hendrickson, Gillette, Wyo., Mike Hendrickson, Burbank, Peggy Armstrong, Ballwin, Mo., Crystal Long, Tyrone, Pa., and Gary Hendrickson, Pasco; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

His wife, Colleen E. Hopkins Hendrickson, preceded him in death.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947 and the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home in Kennewick.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Kennewick.

Peder Kaloides Ecker

SIOUX FALLS — Peder Kaloides Ecker, son of Peder Kornelius Ecker and Amalia Helena Kaloides, was born October 21, 1929, in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from Rapid City High School in 1947. Peder obtained his BS in Political Science and his JD from the University of South Dakota. He was admitted to the South Dakota State Bar in 1955, the Nebraska State Bar in 1958, and the U.S. District Court for South Dakota in 1960.

Peder was married to Dorothy Severson from March 18, 1951, until January 1986. They had five daughters, Diane (Dean) Jankord, New Prague, MN, Debra (Sam) Maniaci, Palm Harbor, FL, Dorothy Anne (Ross) Dupper, Naperville, IL, Dawn (Todd) Nelson, Sioux Falls, and Donna Ecker, Sioux Falls.

On February 14, 1990, Peder married Marjorie Bieber in Miami, Fla.

Peder served in the 2nd Infantry Division, U.S. Army, and as Captain of the Army JAGC Reserve.

He worked as an adjuster and Assistant Claims Superintendent for United States Fidelity & Guaranty Company in Omaha, Neb. In 1959, he joined the law firm of Dana, Golden, Moore & Rasmussen and became a partner in 1961. In 1969, he was appointed as a part-time Bankruptcy Referee and part-time U.S. Magistrate. Peder was appointed as a full-time U.S. Federal Bankruptcy Judge in 1973. He served as a referee and judge for 25 years, until his retirement in October of 1994.

Peder was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Masonic Bodies, El Riad Shrine, and El Riad Clowns. He served as the Big Clown in 1983 and 1995.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Peder was active in numerous civic organizations and served as founding director and board chairman of SunBank of South Dakota, chairman for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, vice-chairman of the Minnehaha County March of Dimes, president of the Noon Toastmasters, president of Sioux Falls Fraternal Order of Eagles, member and director of Downtown Kiwanis, member and director of Sioux Falls Civic Fine Arts Association, member and president of Sioux Falls Park & Recreation Board, member of and chairman, South Dakota Governor's Advisory Council, and membership-drive chairman for the YMCA in 1976. He also served as the president of the South Dakota Young Democrats, chairman of the Minnehaha County Democratic Party, chairman of the South Dakota Lawyers for John F. Kennedy, state chairman for the South Dakota Democratic Party, South Dakota Delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1968, and South Dakota co-chairman, Robert F. Kennedy for President in 1968.

Peder is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his five daughters; 13 grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; a sister, Sally (Norm) Griggs of Rapid City, SD; and a brother, Eugene (Karen) of Lakewood, CO; and a brother-in-law, Paul Torgerson, Rapid City. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Phyllis Torgerson.

Visitation began at noon Friday, February 1, at Miller Funeral Home with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2002 at First Presbyterian Church, Sioux Falls.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be directed to El Riad Shrine Transportation Fund or First Presbyterian Church.

William Louis Sowden

BOX ELDER — William Louis Sowden, 52, of Box Elder, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He was born on September 22, 1949, in Lynnwood, California, to Walter and Louise Sowden. As a young boy he lived with his family in Downey, California. He attended Orange County public schools, and while he was in high school, he participated in and excelled at a variety of sports. He was a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams. He received a variety of accolades to include all city and state honors in football and baseball. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1968. William attended initial entry training in San Antonio, Texas, and was assigned as a personnel specialist at Hoff Air Station, Italy. He returned to the United States in 1971, where he was stationed at Vance Air Force Base (AFB), Oklahoma.

On June 16, 1972, he married Gaiola Eileen Tompkins in Enid, Okla. On November 4, 1972, Walter James Sowden was born at Enid Memorial Hospital. The family stayed in Oklahoma until January 1973; from there they were assigned to Mather AFB, Sacramento, California. On Christmas Day, 1976, William and Gaiola's second son, Gregory, was born in Sacramento, Calif.

William's Air Force career spanned over 24 years. During this time William served in a variety of challenging leadership positions in the U.S. Air Force all over the world. Some of the positions William held during his career included Non-commissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC) of personnel records, Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadet administration section NCOIC at Washington State University, NCOIC of promotions and testing, Greenham Command AFB, England, Chief of Career Progression, Sembach AFB, Germany, and NCOIC of personnel retirement and separation, Ellsworth AFB, S.D. During his military career William earned several awards, to include the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Air Force Achievement Medal. William retired from the Air Force in 1992 at Ellsworth AFB. After his retirement from the Air Force, William served as a Teniner Operator at Merillat Industries from 1993 until 1999. William also worked as a convenience-store clerk at the Mini Mart in Box Elder, S.D., from 2000 until 2001.

William dedicated his life to two things: his country and his family. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. He was an avid sports fan. His favorite teams included the St. Louis Rams and the Los Angeles Dodgers. His main hobby was collecting sports cards and memorabilia. During his life William took special interest in anything and everything his two sons participated in; he coached his sons' sports team and supported his boys in all their endeavors, to include a multitude of sports and activities in theater and music.

He is survived by his wife, Gaiola, from Box Elder; his son Walter, his wife, Shawndel, and their two children, William and Georgia, from Fort Hood, Texas; his son Gregory and his wife, Denise, from Portland, Ore.; his mother, Louise Goff of Auburn, Calif.; and three sisters, Dianne LeCoq of LaMirada, Calif., Vicky Beaudoux of Fountain Valley, Calif., and Linda Easterly of Oakhurst, Calif.

Funeral services will be Monday, February 4, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Behrens Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Bruce Baum officiating.

Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
