Margaret was the second child in a family of five. Her childhood was filled with singing, and music gave her enjoyment her whole life.

Margaret earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and another in nursing from Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis, where she was selected as Nurse of the Year. On March 14, 1942, she married Reverend Norval Hegland in Spring Prairie, Wisconsin. The wedding was performed by her father.

The couple moved to Moorhead, Minnesota, where Norval served as Professor of Religion and Dean of Men at Concordia College. After World War II, the couple served in the Lemmon Circuit Air Parish in South Dakota, and then a nine-point flying parish based in Newell, South Dakota.

In 1951 Pastor Norval accepted the call to be Superintendent of the Lutheran Eskimo Mission and "flying pastor" based in Teller, Alaska. He also established a church at Nome. During their nine years of service in Alaska, Margaret's skills in nursing, administration and music were essential. In consultation with doctors in Nome by means of short-wave radio, Margaret administered to villagers' medical needs. She was president of the Ladies Aid, superintendent of Sunday School, choir director, director of Summer Bible School, coordinator of Luther League, and performed many other support activities in mission work. During the year when Pastor Norval convalesced from tuberculosis, and then when he flew to Nome for services, Margaret held church services in Teller. Along with her husband, Margaret reveled in the challenges and beauty of life in Alaska.

Rev. and Mrs. Hegland returned to the lower 48 states in 1960 and served parishes in Philip and Parker, South Dakota. In later years Margaret and Norval served as nursing home co-administrators for the Good Samaritan Society in St. Francis, Kansas, and Hermiston, Oregon, and finally served a parish in Wibaux, Montana. They retired to Hamilton, Mont., and later to Lakeside, Mont.

Margaret and Pastor Norval raised three children: Paul who lives in Arlington, Virginia; Mary who lives in San Jose, California; and Ruth, also of Arlington.

Margaret Hegland was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Helen Margarethe Hegland, who died September 13, 2000, exactly one year before Margaret, her brother Gerhard Brandt Naeseth, and her sister, Elaine Naeseth Lee.

She was survived by her loving husband Norval Hegland; her children Paul Hegland and his wife Kristen Puckett, Mary Hegland, and Ruth Hegland; grandchildren Mathew Puckett, Elizabeth and Ben Hegland, Karima Hooglund, and Allen Danze; great-granddaughter Nakeysa; and her siblings Louise and her husband Fred Hubbard, Erling Naeseth and his wife Sally, Milma Naeseth wife of the late Gerhard Naeseth, and Bob Lee, husband of the late Elaine Naeseth Lee.

Margaret is remembered for her love of family, her kindness to all, and her delight in even the small joys of life. Her family particularly appreciates her courageous effort to continue showing her love during her last long illness.

A memorial service was held Monday, September 17, 2001, at Eidsvold Lutheran Church in Somers, Montana. Any memorial gifts may be sent to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, P.O. 965, Nome, Alaska, 99762.
