Carol Ruth Sander

SPEARFISH — Carol Ruth Sander, 79, of Spearfish, died Friday, January 25, 2002 at the Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Carol Ruth Bemmels was born on December 2, 1922, at Fairfax, Minn., to Gustav Adolph and Verna L. (Bothe) Bemmels. She grew up in Fairfax, Minn., area where she attended public schools, graduating valedictorian from Fairfax High School in 1940.

She attended St. Olaf College, Denver University and Black Hills State University.

Carol was joined in marriage to Harvey Harold Sander on June 14, 1944, at Fairfax, Minn.

She is survived by three children: Dale Sander and his wife Carol, of Spearfish, Laura Goodwin of Rifle, Colo., and Ruth and her husband Eric Grinager of Watertown, S.D.; one sister Dorothy Sander Fairfax, Minn.; seven granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Wanda; one great-grandson, Gabriel; her parents; three brothers; and one sister.

Being married to a United Methodist minister, Carol shared musically in his ministries as they served churches in Tulare/Crandon Settlement, Groton/Andover/Bath, Rapid City, Pierre and Spearfish.

In each community she was involved in civic and church activities including various choirs, United Methodist Women, PEO Sisterhood and Piano Guild. She served as church organist and choir director in several communities.

She taught piano, organ and voice lessons. She loved her family, church, music, sewing, quilting and gardening.

She was a superb cook, and her meals served as the focal point of countless family gatherings.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2002, at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish, with Rev. Kip Roozen officiating.

Memorial contributions will go to the building fund of the Spearfish United Methodist Church.

The Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Dorothy E. Sweet

UPTON, Wyo. — Funeral services for Dorothy E. Sweet, 88, of Upton will be held at Upton First Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Monday, January 28. Cremation will follow services; burial of the cremains will take place at a later date beside her husband in the Greenwood Cemetery, Upton, Wyoming. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Upton Ambulance Service.

Mrs. Sweet died Thursday, January 24, 2002, at Weston County Health Services in Newcastle, Wyoming.

Dorothy was born December 9, 1913, on Buffalo Creek west of Upton, the daughter of Eugene Ellsworth and Elizabeth Margaret (Schneider) Watt. Dorothy was raised on the ranch on Buffalo Creek. She worked hard as a child, being the oldest of nine children helping take care of them. She worked in the fields and starting at about 13 years old, she drove four head of horses on the disc among the farming and ranching jobs. She was also about eight years old when she and Brother Leslie trapped during the winter,

She was educated the first eight years in country school near the ranch. When a freshman in high school, she attended school in Buffalo for a year. She spent the next three years in Moorcroft High School. She also received her Wyoming State High School Normal Training certificate of graduation in May, 1932. She taught at the Douglas-Sweet school from the fall 1932 to spring of 1933, staying at the former Albert Douglas ranch. In the summer of 1933 she went to Chadron, Nebraska, and attended the Nebraska State Normal College. In the fall of 1933 she taught at the Watt school for one half a year. Then in January of 1934 went back to the Douglas-Sweet school. She taught here until spring of 1935. In the fall of 1935 to spring of 1936 she taught at the Oelker School.

Dorothy married Cecil Sweet April 25, 1936 at Custer, South Dakota. They began ranching and farming on the Wolhbrandt place east of Upton. They then moved to the Olsen place in the spring of 1946 where they lived until 1976 when their son Lee bought the ranch. They lived a couple of years at the Douglas Place and then moved to Upton in 1978.

She was a 4-H leader for many years, and in 1964 was named outstanding 4-H Leader. She was secretary for the Weston County Farm Bureau for several years. She also belonged to two women's clubs, the Skull Creek and ETC Women's Clubs. In June, 1994, Dorothy and Cecil were honored at the Perino Horse Sale for dedicating their lives to agriculture.

Surviving her are five children, Eugene of Gillette, Wyo., Lee of Katy, Texas, Robert of Upton, Wyo., Neil of Newcastle, Wyo., and Marilynn Overman of Gillette, Wyo. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by two brothers, Earl Watt and Bruce Watt, both of Upton, Wyo.; two sisters, Mildred Bliss of California and Lucille Darlington of Upton, Wyo.

Preceding her in death were her husband Cecil on February 1, 1996; two sisters, Esther Stevens and Beverly Thompson; two brothers, Leslie Watt and Art Watt; and two grandchildren, Christa Noel Sweet Cavender and Clinton Patrick Sweet.

Neil R. Hansen Sr.

RAPID CITY — Neil R. Hansen Sr. died at Westhills Village Health Care on January 25, 2002.

Neil was born November 13, 1910, in Humboldt, Iowa, to Hans and Marion (Jensen) Hansen, the youngest of 12 children. The family moved to Wagner, South Dakota in December of 1919 where Neil attended school and graduated from Wagner High School.

On September 6, 1930, he married Olive Cron of Lake Andes, S.D., and the family lived in Wag-ner, where Neil worked for Fairmont Creamery until September, 1944. At that time the family moved to Rapid City where Neil was employed by E.C. "Ping" Murray and later joined Ping in a partnership of business ventures including Hills Gas & Appliance, Rapid Gas, and Home Gas. They had numerous propane plants throughout the state and sold the businesses to Cal Gas of California in 1964. Neil stayed on and worked as a consultant with Cal Gas until 1977 when he retired.

Neil and Olive moved to Tucson, Ariz., in 1978 where they enjoyed their home in Oro Valley, returning to their Rapid City home during the summer months. After some illness, they returned to Rapid City in September, 1988, to make their home at Westhills Village.

Neil had been active in numerous activities, among them being a member of the United Methodist Church in Rapid City and Tucson, Ariz., Royal Arch Masons of the Black Hills Chapter No. 25 of the Black Hills Council No. 3, and of Naja Shrine Temple in Deadwood, S.D., B.P.O.E. and Kiwanis of Rapid City.

Neil was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Olive, in November, 1997; his first son, Lowell Deane Hansen in November of 1996, his parents, brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his son Neil R. (MaryLou) Hansen Jr. of Rapid City; daughters Donna (Ronald) Eliason and Sharon (Joseph) Kovarik, and daughter-in-law LaVonne Hansen; five grandsons, four granddaughters, and numerous great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. today at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 1:3O p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Diehl officiating.

Interment will be at Pine Lawn Cemetery. The family requests no flowers. A memorial has been established to the First United Methodist Church.

Blanche Ames

BOWMAN, N.D. — Blanche Ames, 89, Bowman, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Belle Fourche Long Term Care Center.

Survivors include three cousins, Dean Tarter, Camp Crook, S.D., Thornton Vallery, Nisland, S.D., and Phyllis Godfredson, Newell, S.D.

Arrangements are pending at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, S.D.

Elliot MacGrath

HOT SPRINGS — Elliot MacGrath, 78, Hot Springs, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Hot Springs Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Survivors include four sisters; two brothers; and special friend, Dorothy Smith, Hot Springs.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.

Viola Marie Blair

STURGIS — Viola Marie Blair, age 78, Sturgis, died Friday, January 25, 2002, at her home in Pleasant Valley.

Visitation will be Monday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel and Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the church.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 29, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Howard Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the First Presbyterian Church.

She was born to Hobart and Nettie (Boese) Hays on April 21, 1923, at Comanche, Okla. She graduated as valedictorian of Deadwood High School in 1941. Viola received a Homestake scholarship and attended Black Hills State College in Spearfish for two years. During World War II, she worked at a Boeing plant in Washington state. On November 4, 1945, she married George W. Blair of Sturgis. They ranched in Harding County before moving to the ranch in Pleasant Valley in 1956.

Viola was inspired by the beauty she saw in nature. She enjoyed writing, painting, crafts, rock collecting, and family activities. Among her accomplishments, she hiked the Grand Canyon and published a book of poetry. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. Throughout the years, Viola enthusiastically participated in a wide variety of community and state activities.

Survivors include her husband, George, Sturgis; two sons, Jerry Blair, Las Vegas, Nev., and Jeff Blair, Newton, Iowa; six daughters, Janet Pharr, Spearfish, Mary Beth Cornelius, Scottsdale, Ariz., Nancy Remington, Sturgis, Gayle Urban, Woodbridge, Va., Kathleen Skalbeck, Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Ann Blair, Coon Rapids, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, Richard Hays, Ft. Meyers, Fla., Robert Hays, Nampa, Idaho, and Russell Hays, Belle Fourche, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Joanna; two brothers, Harold and Johnny; and her son, John.

A memorial has been established to the First Presbyterian Church,

Darry Wagner

BELLE FOURCHE — Darry Wagner, 50, of Belle Fourche passed away Thursday evening, January 24, at his home.

Visitation will be Monday, January 28, from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and one hour prior to the service at the church. A memorial has been established.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 29, at the Belle Fourche United Methodist Church with Pastor Steve Olson and Hospice Chaplain Charlie Conger officiating. Interment with full military honors will be in Black Hills National Cemetery.

Darry was born July 31, 1951, in Hoven, S.D., to Clarence and Judy (Long) Wagner. He grew up on a farm east of Agar. While growing up, he attended the West Harrison School near their home through the 7th grade. He continued his schooling in Agar, graduating from Agar High School in 1969. Following graduation, he attended college at South Dakota State and Black Hills State, one year each.

Darry enlisted in the U.S. Army in July of 1972, serving in Korea. Following his discharge, he returned to central South Dakota where he made his home, working as an independent salesman for various companies. Darry moved to Belle Fourche in December of 1996. He attended Black Hills State University, earning as B.S. Degree in Psychology in 1998. At the time of his death, Darry was employed by Lawson Products.

Survivors include his wife, Heather Wagner of Belle Fourche. His mother and stepfather Judy and Bob Ramler of Onida, S.D. Stepson Willy and Nicole Maskovich of Pipestone, Minn.; five stepdaughters Tina Rose of New Elm, Minn., Christy Maskovich of Pierre, Misty and Justin Berry of Bamberg, Germany, Brandi and Gurne Olsen of Belle Fourche and Danielle Parr of Sioux Falls. Sisters Carla Wagner of Fort Pierre and June Russell of Pierre. Stepbrother Donnie and Wendy Ramler and stepsister Judy and Steve West all of Onida; 16 grandchildren; one nephew and five nieces.

Walter M. Oyler

RAPID CITY — Walter M. Oyler, 85, Rapid City, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Oyler, Rapid City; three daughters, Marilyn Warren and Judith Bergman, both of Rapid City, and Sharon Paule, Piedmont; one son, Michael Oyler, Rapid City; five brothers, John Oyler, Lemul Oyler, Louie Oyler and Joe Oyler, all of Rapid City, and Albert Oyler, Merino, Colo.; two sisters, Millie VanVickle, St. Cloud, Minn., and Grace Jensen, Carrollton, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Charles F. ‘Chuck' Humiston

RAPID CITY — Charles F. "Chuck" Humiston, 78, Rapid City, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Humiston, Rapid City; two sons, Charles Henry "Hank" Humiston, Albuquerque, N.M., and Gene Earl Humiston, Edgemont; one daughter, Patti Kay Rudge; two sisters, Marilyn Greenwood, Cartwright, N.D., and Loralyn Riley, Norway, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Chamberlain Funeral Chapel in Chadron, Neb. Burial will follow at Oelrichs Hillside Cemetery in Oelrichs.

A memorial has been established to Oelrichs Senior MEALS program.

Kraig Black Horse Farland

WAKPAMNI LAKE — Kraig Black Horse Farland, infant son of Frederick and Nora Farland of Phoenix, was born and died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, in Phoenix.

Survivors include his parents; his paternal grandparents, Ned and Nadine Farland, Phoenix; his maternal grandparents, William and Nadine Blue Bird, Batesland; and one brother, Kane Farland, Phoenix.

A one-night wake began Friday, Jan. 25, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Wakpamni Lake.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the church, with the Rev. Cordelia Red Owl officiating.

Burial will be at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cemetery.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Marvin P. Hofer

FREEMAN — Marvin P. Hofer, 77, Freeman, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Hofer, Freeman; one son, Don Hofer, Freeman; two daughters, Priscilla Hofer, Alexandria, and Ann Marie Reiling, Rapid City; four grandchildren; one brother, Leroy Hofer, Freeman, and one sister, Vivian Epp, Minneapolis.

Visitation was held Friday, Jan. 25, at Walter Funeral Home in Freeman.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Hutterthal Mennonite Church in Freeman, with burial at the church cemetery.

William Dale ‘Tuck' Lutes

LAS VEGAS — William Dale "Tuck" Lutes, 83, Las Vegas and Hot Springs, S.D., died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in Las Vegas.

Survivors include his wife, Marian Lutes, Las Vegas and Hot Springs.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Custer.

Johnny V. Renaud

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Johnny V. Renaud, 47, Colorado Springs, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in Hot Springs.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Renaud, Colorado Springs; one daughter, Danielle Renaud, Colorado Springs; one stepson, Ray Thompson, Longmont, Colo.; three brothers, Lonnie Renaud, Egan, Minn., Jeff Renaud, Oklahoma City, and Jerry Renaud; one sister, Charlotte Showalter, Florissant, Mo.; and one grandchild.

No services will be held.

Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs is in charge of arrangements.
