Larry G. Smith
CHINA SPRING, Texas — Larry G. Smith, age 66, of China Spring died Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at a local hospital. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, January 26 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Stephen Ramsdell officiating. Visitation with the family will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, January 25 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd.
Mr. Smith was born December 20, 1935 in Rapid City, South Dakota, the son of Clinton Clifford and Ethel Markhus Smith, who preceded him in death. He attended Montana State University, where he played football and was a member of the rodeo team.
He moved to Waco in the late 1960s to work in the construction industry and later became owner of his own business, Larry G. Smith Construction Machinery and also Waco Sand and Gravel. Most recently he was the owner of Waco-Austin Equipment Inc., a heavy-equipment rental company with offices in Waco and Austin. Over the years, he was involved in a number of local and civic organizations in Waco.
A towering presence at 6'6" tall, his many friends in Waco referred to him with simple affection as "Big." Mr. Smith was a horseman and hunter.
A member of the National Cutting Horse Association and the American Cutting Horse Association, he was the winner of many local and national championships. He was the Coors Cowtown Cutting Horse Open Champion at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth in 1997 and in 1989 placed in the Top 10 in the World Non-Professional Division. Many of his victories were aboard his favorite horse, "Hot Lynx."
Mr. Smith was known as a great storyteller and for his kindness and generosity, especially with his family members.
He is survived by his wife, Tonia Lynne Smith; daughters, Dawn Varie Smith of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Stephanie Jo Smith Herrick and husband, Mike of Hesperia, California and Shannon Marie Smith Kendrick and her husband, Kiley of Waco; sons, Scott Markhus Smith and wife, Nancy of Wacy, Corey Clinton Smith of Waco, and Cody Quiinton Ackors of Waco; stepdaughter, Suzanne Skie-Azizi of Houston; stepsons, Dr. Greg Skie of Dallas, Jack Skie of San Diego, California, and Brad Skie of Houston; brother, Clifford Glen "Bud" Smith and wife, Dorothy of Bryan; grandchildren, Tommy Peckinpaugh of Hesperia, California, Angela, Hannah and Mikayla Smith of Waco, and Hunter and Kolton Smith Kendrick of Waco; and one nephew and several nieces.
Lucella M. Niederworder
RAPID CITY — Lucella M. Niederworder, 91, Rapid City, died January 23, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Lucella was born in Philip, S.D., and raised on a farm near Philip. She graduated from Philip High School.
She attended Black Hills Teacher's College in Spearfish, S.D., for a year. She then received her Master's Degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo., by attending summer school.
She taught near Interior, S.D., at a country school, and taught at Leola, S.D., before coming to Rapid City, S.D. She began teaching first grade at Annie Tallent Elementary School in Rapid City. She retired after many years of teaching. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Lucella loved flowers, especially roses; plants; birds; painting; making dolls; school activities; traveling; photography; and teacher's tours through SDSU.
She is survived by one brother, Leslie Niederworder of Hot Springs, S.D.; one sister, Elnora Niederworder of New York City, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Viola Smith; and two brothers, Bayard Niederworder and Morris Niederworder.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 27, 2002, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary.
Funeral services will be Monday, January 28, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, with Reverend Duane Duley officiating.
Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Neil Hansen
RAPID CITY — Neil Hansen, 91, Rapid City, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Westhills Village Health Care Center in Rapid City.
Survivors include one son, Neil Hansen Jr., Rapid City; two daughters, Donna Eliason, Black Hawk, and Sharon Kovarik, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and nine grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.
Carol R. Sander
SPEARFISH — Carol R. Sander, 79, Spearfish, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.
Survivors include one son, Dale Sander, Spearfish, and two daughters, Laura Goodwin, Rifle, Colo., and Ruth Grinager, Watertown.

Maybelle Poore
HOT SPRINGS — Maybelle Poore, 89, Hot Springs, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs.
Survivors include her husband, Orville Poore, Hot Springs; two daughters, Mavis Dirksen, Phoenix, and Faye McIntyre, Escondido, Calif.; three brothers, Lawrence Kaitfors, Buffalo, Ray Kaitfors, Ralph, and Neale Kaitfors, Belle Fourche; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Seventh-day Adventist Church in Hot Springs, with the Rev. Max Singhurst officiating.
Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.
Darry Wagner
BELLE FOURCHE — Darry Wagner, 50, Belle Fourche, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Heather Wagner, Belle Fourche; his mother and stepfather, Judy and Bob Ramler, Onida; one stepson, Willy Maskovich, Pipestone, Minn.; five stepdaughters, Tina Rose, New Elm, Minn., Christy Maskovich, Pierre, Misty Berry, Bamberg, Germany, Brandi Olsen, Belle Fourche, and Danielle Parr, Sioux Falls; two sisters, Carla Wagner, Fort Pierre, and June Russell, Pierre; one stepbrother, Donnie Ramler; and one stepsister, Judy West.
Arrangements are pending with Funeral Home of the Northern Hills.
Glen L. Merriman
SMITHVILLE, Okla. — Glen L. Merriman, 67, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at his home in Smithville, Okla.
Born September 28, 1934, in Shadehill, S.D., he had lived in Lead and Spearfish, where he worked for Homestake Gold Mine. He lived in Sturgis, where he worked for Brown Swiss Creamery, and later worked in Rapid on construction jobs. He then moved to Hemmingford, Neb., Carrolton, Texas, and later to reside in Smithsville, Okla.
Survivors include his wife, Geri Merriman of Smithville, Okla.; his brother, Donald Merriman of Shadehill, S.D.; his sister, Lucille Lutz of Spearfish, S.D.; his sister Marvelyn Braaten of Locust Grove, Okla.; his sister Elizabeth Walker of Bowman, N.D.; his brother, Roger Merriman of Pierre, S.D.; daughter Cindy Wilson of Douglas, Wyo.; son Darol Merriman of Whittman, Ariz.; daughter Glenda Merriman of Rapid City, S.D.; son Todd Merriman of Rapid City, S.D.; four grandchildren; two stepsons, Jim and Jeff; and two stepdaughters, Jacque and Julie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith and Arthur Merriman, and his brother, Russell Merriman.
Burial will be held in Smithville, Okla.
Gilbert ‘Gil' Heiser
OSAGE, Wyo. — Funeral services for Osage resident Gil Heiser, 71, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 26, at Worden Chapel in Newcastle with Pastor Tom Miller and Bert Sutherland officiating. Burial will follow at the Upton Greenwood Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Osage Fire Department in Osage, Wyo.
Gilbert John Heiser died Monday, January 21, at Weston County Health Services in Newcastle, Wyo.
He was born April 23, 1930, in Tolstoy, South Dakota, to John and Anna (Lippert) Heiser. As a young man, he moved with his family to Watertown, South Dakota.
On January 10, 1947, he married Dorothy (Toodie) Hemstock in Milbank, South Dakota. The couple moved to Wyoming in 1954. Mr. Heiser worked mostly in the Osage Oilfield and was proud to be employed by Ted Sheehan and J.J. Klodt until he started his own business, Gil's Crude Transportation, in the 1960s.
He was a lifetime member of the Eagle Lodge in Watertown. Mr. Heiser was a boxer in his early years and always enjoyed the sport. He was a hunter, snowmobiler, accordion player and family man extraordinaire.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy (Toodie) of Osage; five daughters, Sherry (Mrs. Leonard) Waldron of Denver, Colorado, Dianne (Mrs. Ernest) Nelson of Newcastle, Wyoming, Julie (Mrs. James) Grebner of Rapid City, S.D., Amy (Mrs. Tony) Goebel of Upton, Wyoming, and Janice (Rich Mirich) Manders of Osage.
He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Carrie (Mrs. Bert) Sutherland of Upton, Wyoming, Pam Manders of Coral Springs, Florida, Steven Manders Jr. of Bismarck, North Dakota, Jennifer (Mrs. Larry) Liggett of Newcastle, Wyoming, Gilbert and Matthew Nelson, both of Newcastle, Kent and Kurt Goebel, both of Upton, Wyoming, and Tess Grebner of Rapid City, S.D. His great grandchildren include Trey and Summer Sutherland, and Lawson, Garrett and Nakala Liggett.
In addition, Mr. Sutherland is survived by five sisters and two brothers: Lillian (Mrs. Harvey) Remington of Rapid City, S.D., Vivian (Mrs. Robert) Kline of Mesa, Ariz., Shirley (Mrs. Millard) Roe of Belle Fourche, S.D., Dorothy Swenson of Watertown, S.D., Phyllis (Mrs. De Wayne) Hartwig of Lake Norden, S.D., Donnie (Mrs. Margie) Heiser and Jerome Heiser of Watertown, S.D.
Pallbearers are grandsons Steve Manders Jr., Gilbert and Matthew Nelson, Kent Goebel, Larry Liggett and Bert Sutherland Jr. Honorary bearers include David, Danny, John, Joe, Steve and Jim Bau; Bill and Jim Barker; Mike Ankeney; Billy Price Jr.; Tommy Hansen; Lyle Benz; Duane Carlson; and anyone he ever taught how to drive a truck.
Charles W. Swallow
RAPID CITY — Charles W. Swallow, 71, of Rapid City, died Wednesday, January 23, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
He was born June 30, 1930, at Oelrichs, S.D., to Charles Swallow and Zoe Monroe Swallow. He grew up and attended school in Pine Ridge, S.D. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and traveled around the world on a goodwill tour. On July 25, 1952, he married Gladys Gray Day and together they raised two children.
Charles worked for the Federal Home Loan Bank Board as a bank examiner in Denver, Colo., where he was the only Indian Bank Examiner in the United States. Next, he accepted the position of Area Supervisory Investment Company Examiner for the Small Business Administration in San Francisco, Calif.
In 1970 he relocated to Washington, D.C. where he worked as the Division Chief for Finance and Credit for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He retired from the U.S. Government in 1973 and accepted a position with the American Indian National Bank in Washington, D.C., where he later became their President and CEO.
Seven years later, Charles retired to Phoenix, Ariz. He and his wife were avid golfers and he won many golfing tournaments in Arizona and North and South Dakota, including the Cave Creek Men's Club Senior Club Championship in Arizona in 1992 and two Hole-in-One trophies.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Charles will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Survivors include his sisters, Berniece Swallow Stone of Pine Ridge, S.D., and Marie Scherer of Monrovia, Calif.; his brothers, Woodrow "Babe" Swallow of Houston, Texas, and James Swallow of Green Briar, Ark.; his son, Michael T. Swallow of Bismarck, N.D., and daughter Adrienne Swallow of Sedona, Ariz.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, at Behrens Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Holy Rosary Mission, Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge, S.D., on Monday, January 28, 2002, at 11 a.m.
Raymond L. Davidson
RAPID CITY — Raymond L. Davidson, 53, Rapid City, died Thursday, January 24, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Raymond was born September 27, 1948, to Donald and Wilma (Mattox) Davidson in Hot Springs, S.D. He lived in Custer, S.D., for 41 years, and Rapid City, S.D., for 12 years. He attended Custer Elementary and Custer High School, and graduated in 1966.
He spent most of his life in logging and construction as a truck driver and a heavy-equipment operator.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3555, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and a life member.
He is survived by his mother, Wilma Davidson of Custer, S.D.; two sons, Jason W. Davidson of Rapid City, S.D., and Clifford W. Zeimet of Rapid City, S.D.; one daughter, Angela K. Doll; one brother, Gary Davidson of Edgemont, S.D.; one sister, Karen Davidson of Columbus, Mont.; seven grandchildren; two nieces; three great-nephews; and a multitude of good friends.
He was preceded in death by all grandparents; his father, Don; and his very special stepson, Tony.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, January 29, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Behrens Chapel.
Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Danny Gene Smith
WITTEN — Danny Gene Smith, 55, Witten, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Winner Regional Healthcare Center.
Survivors include one daughter, Danielle, California, and two sisters, Bonnie Dreyer, Winner, and Belva Smith, Rapid City.
He served in the S.D. Army National Guard.
Visitation will be for one hour before services, which will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Mason Funeral Home in Winner.
Burial will be at Winner Cemetery.
Michael Barber
RAPID CITY — Michael Barber, 50, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include his parents, Glen and Jean Barber, Rapid City.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Wicksville Church, with the Rev. Jim Patrick officiating.
Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery.
