Grace Darlyn (Sullivan) Blare

MARTIN — Funeral services for Grace Blare, 87, were held at the American Legion in Martin, South Dakota on January 11, 2002, with Irvin Putzier officiating. Burial followed at the Martin Cemetery.

Mrs. Blare died Monday, January 7th at the home of her daughter, Jeri Blare-Bartlett, in Fruitdale, South Dakota, of natural causes.

Grace Darlyn Sullivan was born August 8, 1914, on a homestead and ranch near Interior, South Dakota, to Joshua and Clara (Moser) Sullivan. She was their youngest child.

At the age of one year, she moved with her parents to a homestead near Martin, South Dakota. Later, after her father died, she moved in to Martin, with her mother and sisters. She attended grade school in Martin and graduated in 1932, a member of one of the first graduating classes from Bennett County High School, in Martin.

Her favorite class was journalism and telling stories to her children and grandchildren was a life-long passion.

She also studied violin and piano as a child from her father who was an orchestra leader. Grace very much enjoyed attending her high school class reunions and stories of her high school years and friends were always a part of her life.

On January 10th, 1932, she married Doc Blare in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Grace and Doc were married for 66 years. Grace hauled mail and freight while she lived in Martin and helped her husband build Blare Truck Line. In 1938 she moved with her family to Merriman, Nebraska where she also hauled freight and mail and continued working with her husband.

In 1948, Grace and Doc moved back to Martin and Grace helped her husband continue to build Blare Truck Line, which remained in business until 1994. Grace, along with her husband, were rural route mail carriers between Martin and Batesland for 34 years until they retired in 1974. She truly lived the slogan, "rain, nor sleet, nor hail" and added a few words of her own, such as "skunks, rattlesnakes, bad bridges..." Grace was well known for "getting the mail through" no matter what the condition of the roads, or the weather, or the people. Many farmers and ranchers would come to her aid if she did not seem like she would make it and many remember her serving her community in this fashion.

Grace lived her life serving her family and her secular and spiritual communities with grace, faith and commitment. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses for over 40 years and enjoyed sharing her faith with all who would listen.

Grace also sold Avon for many years.

In the year 1994 Grace and Doc moved to Spearfish, South Dakota due to health reasons. They lived together in assisted living facilities and with their daughter, Jeri Blare-Bartlett.

For a short while she lived in nursing homes but the family preferred to have the greater and more loving care of living at home with her family in her final years as that was her life long desire. For the last two years, Grace lived comfortably and happily with her daughter, Jeri.

Grace loved to dance, paint pictures, grow flowers, plant gardens, cook, can produce, rock hounding, music, decorating her home and yard, reading, writing, music (especially Big Band and Swing), her dog "Bear," and sewing. She made many beautiful quilts for her family over the years and sewed most of her children's clothes as they grew.

She also loved studying the Bible, attending Bible studies, and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She also loved visiting her extended family.

She is survived by three children, J. Darlene Muller of Spearfish, South Dakota, Linda Blare of Gillette, Wyoming and Jeri Blare-Bartlett of Fruitdale, South Dakota, brother-in-law, Francis Blare of Chico, California and sisters-in-law, Helen Blare of Chico and Percy Blare of Reliance. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Iris Stanton, Joan Muller-Lyons, Monty Blare, James Blare, Jr., Katie Randich, Travis Blare-Coats, Mikal Bartlett, Jayde Bartlett, Maxx Blare-Bucklin, Mariah Bartlett, Jordan Welling, and Tell Bartlett. In addition, she is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and son-in-law, Mike Bartlett, who loved Grace as his mother, plus many, many nieces and nephews and their families, and her faithful dog, "Bear."

She was preceded in death by her husband Doc in 1998, one son, James Donald Blare, Sr. (J.D.) who preceded her in death by twenty-six hours, her parents, 5 sisters and one brother, one grandson, and one son-in-law.

Jane was born in Toronto, Canada, on February 26, 1917. Her parents, Charles and Marjorie (Wagner) McClung, along with her grandparents and uncle, were homesteaders in the Newell area. After her mother's death in 1921, Jane was raised by her stepmother, Ernestine (Sieler) McClung.

After graduating from Spearfish High School in 1933, Jane earned a teaching certificate at the Black Hills Teachers College and a pilot's license. She taught school in Bowdle, Dupree and Rapid City before her marriage to Howard W. Ice (her flight instructor) on March 25, 1942. They enjoyed 23 years in the Air Force, stationed in various states, Panama and Japan. After Howard's Air Force retirement in 1964, they spent 18 years in Pierre, where Howard flew for the state. They have made their home on Sandcreek in Beulah, Wyo., since 1982.

All her life, Jane gave the gift of music to her family and community. She played the alto horn in the Belle Fourche Cowboy Band, which her father organized in 1931. She was a talented pianist and organist, having studied with Zona White in Rapid City and at the university in Boulder, Colorado. She contributed her talents as church organist whenever she was needed and was an active member of church choirs.

Wherever she was, Jane was an enthusiastic volunteer. During WW II, she worked as an aide in military hospitals until her first child was born. Later, she spent many years working as a "Gray Lady" in base hospitals. She was a dedicated leader for both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, staying active in the latter long after her daughter had grown. She was a contributing member of the ladies' guild at every church to which she belonged. While in Japan, she helped with English language classes in Japanese schools.

Jane's hobbies included playing bridge, painting, reading, and gardening. She took pride in her home, her cooking, her garden, and her family and supported numerous musical and environmental causes.

Jane will be greatly missed by her beloved husband, Howard; by her children, Charles and Jo Ann Ice of Lemoore, Calif., and Diana and Philip Filner of Danville, Calif.; by her grandchildren, Daniel Filner of Oakland, Calif., David Filner of Birmingham (Alabama Symphony Orchestra), Ethan Filner of Daly City, Calif., (Cypress String Quartet) and Shelly Ice of Aurora, Colo.; by her in-laws, Cecil and Marge Ice of Pierre and Virginia Ice Miller of Pinedale; and by cousins and numerous nieces and nephews, including Vernelle (Sam) and Clare Armstrong of Spearfish, Linda and Galen Theobald and Jeff and Bonnie Ice, all of Pierre. Jane was blessed with many loving friends — including her sisters in PEO, Eastern Star, and Trinity Guild and the staff at Garden Hills Assisted Living, Lookout Memorial Hospital and the Dorsett Home — who supported both her and her family during her long illness. Those wishing to commemorate her life may consider the Charlie McClung Memorial Scholarship for the Belle Fourche Cowboy Band or the Charlie McClung bandshell fund, Spearfish.
