Herbie Wayne Ruleau

COLLINSVILLE, Miss. — Herbie Wayne Ruleau of Collinsville, Miss., died on January 15, 2002, at Heartfelt Hospice in Meridian, Miss. He was 69 years old.

Herbie was born at Pine Ridge, S.D., where he attended boarding school. He then graduated from Gordon High School in Gordon, Neb., and afterwards joined the Marine Corps. While in the Marines, Mr. Ruleau fought in the Korean War and the Vietnam War and earned numerous medals, including the Purple Heart. After retiring from the Marines, he worked as a police officer in Clarksdale, Miss., and then as a federal probation officer at Pine Ridge, S.D. He went on to graduate from Delta State University and worked as a juvenile probation officer and counselor in Clarksdale. Mr. Ruleau also worked as a police lieutenant in Southhaven, Miss. He received a degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from Mississippi State University in 1984 and went to work for the Wyoming Division of Vocational Rehabilitation in Sheridan, Wyo. He was then employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Pine Ridge, S.D., as a mental-health counselor, a dormitory supervisor and counselor at Pine Ridge School, and as a vocational rehabilitation counselor.

Mr. Ruleau belonged to several organizations, including the Marine Corps Association, Fleet Reserve Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion Association, the Mississippi Association of the 1st Marine Division, and the USMC/Vietnam Helicopter Association. He was also a former member of the American Legion.

Mr. Ruleau is survived by his wife, Debra, of Collinsville, Miss.; three sons, Dale Ruleau and his wife Karla, of Rushville, Neb., Bruce Ruleau of Cuba, N.M., and Jon Ruleau of Falmouth, Mich.; five grandchildren, Kyla Vincent and her husband Clint, of Rushville, Neb., Karac Ruleau of Columbus, Ohio, Kalli Ruleau of Lincoln, Neb., Jessica Geiman of Tulsa, Okla., and Nikki Washowicz of Watervliet, Mich.; a great-grandson, Kendrick Vincent, of Rushville, Neb.; five sisters, Bette Trombley of Rushville, Neb., Laurine Ruleau of Albuquerque, N.M., Phyllis Ruleau and her husband Frank Walker, of Yakima, Wash., Nancy Stultz and her husband Jim, of Blairstown, Iowa, Ivis Molander and her husband Ronald, of Cornville, Ariz.; a brother, Donald Ruleaux and his wife Betty, of Chadron, Neb.; and a brother-in-law, Hank Scherbarth, of Hay Springs, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Helen Ruleau, of Gordon, Neb., and a sister, Geraldine Scherbarth, of Hay Springs, Neb.

A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Gordon, Neb., with visitation afterward. The funeral service is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Burial will be at Hay Springs Cemetery in Hay Springs, Neb.

Stephens Funeral Home in Meridian, Miss., and Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home in Gordon, Neb., are handling arrangements.

Charles Leon Summers

BLACK HAWK — Charles Leon Summers, 85, Black Hawk, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from March 1945 to Nov. 2, 1946.

Survivors include his wife, Alma, Black Hawk; one son, Roger Summers, Black Hawk; one daughter, Norma Jean Stufflebean, Chino, Calif.; two brothers, Bert of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Bill Summers, Baldwin Park, Pa.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Friends may gather at the funeral home before going to the cemetery. Graveside services, with military honors provided by the Sturgis Honor Guard, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with the Rev. Allen Bates officiating.

Rachel M. Bradley

BOULDER, Colo. — Rachel M. Bradley, 82, of 1710 Lehigh Street, Boulder, Colorado, died January 8, 2002, as a result of lung cancer. She lived in Boulder from May 1993 to January 2002.

She was born January 2, 1920, in Woodward, Oklahoma, to George Walton Tucker and Valley Beatrice Cane.

Survivors include a son, Jack W. Fitzsimmons of Boulder, Colorado; sister, Dorothy Barr of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Marjorie Brown Ihrig of Appomattox, Virginia; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Maitland Bradley, DDS, and three sisters, Betty Baird, Naomi Prola and Geneva Facundus.

Among the many jobs Rachel held, her two favorites were as Dental Hygienist with her husband, Maitland, and as Sales Associate at Bear Country.

Rachel was an active participant in the American Legion during her 30-year-plus association. She held several officer positions, chaired several committees and volunteered her time on various projects. When her son, Jack, became a veteran of Vietnam, she joined the VFW and began an active association as a VFW member.

Rachel was a resident of Rapid City for 54 years, until her husband passed in 1991. She moved to Boulder to live with her son, Jack Fitzsimmons and wife Bonnie. Rachel enjoyed traveling and was able to continue this pursuit for approximately six years following her move to Boulder. Her family enjoyed her many stories of interesting people and places she had visited.

A memorial service will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery on January 24, 2002, at 1:30 p.m.

Rachel will be interred with her husband, Maitland Bradley, following the memorial service.

Contributions may be made to Dorothy Thompson and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, Rapid City, South Dakota.

Luverne ‘Smokey' Louder

PIERRE — Luverne "Smokey" Louder, 93, Pierre and formerly of Draper, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Maryhouse Nursing Home in Pierre.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Louder, Pierre; one son, Ron Louder, Draper; two daughters, Shirley Wood, Rapid City, and Yvonne Laur, Sioux Falls; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Louder, Pierre, and Keith Louder, Rapid City; and one sister, Maxine Curtis, Rapid City.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Draper Methodist Church.

Burial will be at Draper Cemetery.

A memorial will be established as a scholarship fund at Jones County High School.

Samuel Isaac Bacon

NATCHITOCHES, La. — Samuel Isaac Bacon, infant son of Jeanie and Brent Bacon of Natchitoches, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

Survivors include his parents of Natchitoches; one brother, Kenneth Bacon, Natchitoches; his maternal grandparents, Sam and Kathy Bell, Carmel, La.; and his paternal grandparents, Bill and Barbara Bacon, Rapid City.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today at Spring Ridge Cemetery in Pleasant Hill, La., with the Rev. Doris Sheppard officiating.

Rose-Neath Funeral Home of Mansfield, La., is in charge of arrangements.

Lois E. Holbrook

HOT SPRINGS — Lois E. Holbrook, 75, Hot Springs, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmie Holbrook, Hot Springs; four sons, Kenneth Kietzke, Albuquerque, N.M., Karl Kietzke, Fort Worth, Texas, Kelly Kietzke, Swanee, Tenn., and Kirk Kietzke, Silver Creek, Neb.; one daughter, Karen, Calgary, Alberta; one sister, Margaret, Hamilton, Mont.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

At her request, there will be no services.

Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs is in charge of arrangements.

James L. Morris

CASPER, Wyo. — James L. Morris, 72, Casper and formerly of Sundance, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Life Care Center in Casper.

Survivors include two sons, Ken Morris, Sundance, and Louis Morris, Florence, Mont.; three daughters, Doris Backus, Casper, Wanda Hulit, Laramie, and Shelly Morris, Sheridan; five brothers, Robert Morris, Wickenberg, Ariz., Henry Morris, Glendive, Mont., Bill Morris and Ben Morris Jr., both of Newcastle, and Richard Morris, Osage; and two sisters, Helen Knipp, Osage, and Joyce Hammell, Casper.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler-Roberts Funeral Chapel of Sundance.

Donald Floyd Reslock

RAPID CITY — Donald Floyd Reslock, 73, Rapid City and formerly of Devils Lake, N.D., died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.

Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Leet, Devils Lake, and four brothers, Harold Reslock, Seattle, Phil Reslock, Devils Lake, Millette Reslock, Myrtle Point, Ore., and Caryl Reslock, Mandan, N.D.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict.

Visitation began Friday, Jan. 18, and continues from 9 a.m. until service time today at Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel in Devils Lake.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Harold Ovre officiating.

Burial, with military honors by Neathery-Simensen Post No. 756, Devils Lake VFW, will be at Devils Lake Cemetery.

Alvin Morris Sundall

MARION — Alvin Morris Sundall, 78, Marion and formerly of Presho, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Survivors include six daughters, Sharon Weber, Marion, Patricia Mercer, Blunt, Pamela Niles, Plankinton, Jolene McManigal, Presho, Laurie Sundall, Pakwood, Iowa, and Lisa Dismont, Sandy Hook, Conn.; two sons, James Sundall, Kennebec, and Edwin Sundall, Presho; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carl Sundall, Chamberlain, and Robert Sundall, Rapid City; and two sisters, Anna Rumsey, Rapid City, and Cathryn Sundall, St. Paul, Minn.

His wife, Norma Ilene Hintz Sundall, preceded him in death.

He served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 30, 1944, to July 23, 1946.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Presho.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at Zion Lutheran Church in Presho.

Burial will be at Kennebec Cemetery.

Clyde F. Peters

SOAP LAKE, Wash. - Clyde F. Peters, 80, of Soap Lake, Wash., and formerly of South Dakota, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at McKay Memorial Nursing Home in Soap Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian, Soap Lake; three sons, Rodney Peters and Mark Peters, both of Ephrata, Wash., and Clayton Peters, Soap Lake; three daughters, Cincy Millican, Moses Lake, Wash., Jody Swem, Soap Lake, and Mary Ramirez, Bothell, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; four brothers, Olin Peters, Pierre, S.D., Fred Peters, Kadoka, S.D., Allen Peters, Murdo, S.D., and Alvin Peters, Rapid City; and three sisters, Grace Carney, Maryland, Betty Borders, Colorado, and Ethel Oldenkamp, Okaton, S.D.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until February 1946.

Services were held Dec. 28, 2001, at Nicoles Funeral Home Chapel in Ephrata.

Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D., at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation, 120 Gate Plaza, Suite No. 316, Seattle, WA 98125.

Raphael Bartholomew Long

PINE RIDGE - Raphael Bartholomew Long, 34 years old, was born November 11, 1967.

Raphael died on January 12, 2002, at Pine Ridge Hospital.

Raphael worked at OST Tribal Office for six years and OST Housing Authority for six years. He also worked at Ashland, Montana. Raphael attended high school at Red Cloud School and graduated from 12th grade there. He also attended Oglala Lakota College.

Survivors include his mother, Cynthia Catches, from Mission Flats, and his father, Bartholomew Long; one sister, Shannon Long Two Bulls; and two brothers, Xavier Long and Adrian Long; also his best friend and adopted brother, James White Face.

Wake services will be at the Catches residence in Mission Flats. Burial will be at the Catches residence.

Peter Catches Jr. will officiate at services.

Aloysius Thomas Yellow Boy

PINE RIDGE - Aloysius Thomas Yellow Boy, 44, Pine Ridge, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, in Pine Ridge.

Survivors include his wife, Irma Red Ear Horse, Pine Ridge; two sons, John Yellow Boy, Scottsbluff, Neb., and Aaron Yellow Boy, Denver; two daughters, Alysa Yellow Boy, Scottsbluff, and Danae Yellow Boy, Oglala; two brothers, James Yellow Boy, Calico, and Philip Yellow Boy, Pine Ridge; and four sisters, Mary Mousseau, Theresa Claymore and Darlene Yellow Boy, all of Calico, and Lorraine Richards, Pine Ridge.

A one-night wake will begin at 2 p.m. today at Wakpamni CAP in Pine Ridge.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Holy Rosary Mission Catholic Church in Pine Ridge, with the Rev. Peter Klink officiating.

Burial will be at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Pine Ridge.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth H. Galloway

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. - Ruth H. Galloway, Lake George, N.Y., died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, after a lengthy battle with Huntington's Disease. Her brain has been donated for research to the Harvard Medical School.

She is survived locally by her daughter, Jan (LaGrande) Leigh, and son-in-law Steve Leigh. Ruth dearly loved her grandsons, Matthew Ramos and Cody LaGrande.

A memorial service and burial will be at Lake George in the spring.
