Charlotte Peterson

CUSTER - Charlotte Peterson, 62, Custer County, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Peterson; three sons, Mark, Steve and Michael Peterson; one daughter, Patricia Hoag; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at First Baptist Church in Newcastle, Wyo., with the Rev. Jim Jones officiating.

Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Worden Funeral Directors of Newcastle is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Missionary Fund.

Philomena Slow Bear

PINE RIDGE - Philomena Slow Bear, 49, Pine Ridge, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Rapid City Care Center.

Survivors include two sons, Trudell Slow Bear, Pine Ridge, and Lester Thunder Hawk, Rapid City; seven daughters, Melissa Shields, Vesta Packed and Sherry Slow Bear, all of Pine Ridge, Linda Thunder Hawk, Porcupine, Lois Clifford, Plattville, Wis., and Annie Slow Bear and Irma Last Horse, both of Kyle; two brothers, Benjamin Slow Bear and Floyd Slow Bear, both of Sioux Falls; one sister, Annie Mills, Minneapolis; and nine grandchildren.

A one-night wake will begin at 2 p.m. today at Brother Rene Catholic Hall in Oglala.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Brother Rene Catholic Hall, with the Rev. Bill Pauly officiating.

Burial will be at Our Lady of the Sioux Catholic Cemetery in Oglala.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Carroll Warren Dennis

RAPID CITY - Carroll was born Sept. 26, 1930, at Little Sioux, Iowa, to Lillie M. Warren and Thomas W. Dennis. He came to the Black Hills in 1942, attended Rapid City schools, and worked on Warren family ranches along Spring Creek. He enlisted in the Air Force in Jan. 1948. Carroll's overseas service included Guam, Japan, England, Germany, and Vietnam. While stationed in England he married Brenda E. Batten of London on March 14, 1953. Carroll retired from the Air Force in 1968, settling in Rapid City and working for Brekhus

International and Barber Transportation. He and Brenda started Traders Corner in June 1983, which they operated with their daughter Laura and Carroll's mother Lillie.

Carroll was an auction addict and enjoyed the friendships of his extended auction family. He was quick to laugh, loved sharing stories, and he was quick to lend a helping hand, although rarely asking for help himself. Carroll enjoyed the Black Hills, especially fishing and deer hunting (a great source of stories). He was forthright and square in his dealings and expected the same from others (he could be tough). Carroll passed from this world on Jan. 16.

Carroll's survivors include his wife Brenda Dennis, mother Lillie Groth, daughter Laura Kinser, and son Thomas Dennis (Suzy) of Rapid City; son Raymond Dennis (Marlene) of St. Cloud, Minn.; son Michael Dennis (Stephanie) of Los Alamos, N.M.; and grandchildren Tim Dennis, Melissa and David Kinser, Parker Dennis, Zach Roth, Rob and Matt O'Hotto, Jannell Boeckerman, and Amanda Due.

Services will be at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18.

Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by Ellsworth AFB Honor Guard.

A gathering of family and friends for lunch and fellowship will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Mother Butler Center by St. Isaac Jogues Church in Rapid City.

A memorial has been established.

Sylvester P. 'Sy' Steffes

APPLE VALLEY, Minn. - Sylvester P. "Sy" Steffes of Apple Valley passed away after a two-year battle with cancer on

January 12, 2002. Born in St. Cloud, Wisconsin on January 4, 1921. Preceded in death by parents, William T. and Mattie Steffes, and sister Lucy Steffes. Survived by wife of 55 years, Marjorie (nee Ham); daughter Carolyn Robinson and her husband Dan of Lakeville; and their children Jeff and Anne Robinson, Kimberly and Roger Shammas, and Cary and Kristin Robinson; son Phil Steffes and his wife Nancy of Bloomington; and their children Jim, Debra and Matt; daughter Kathy Valusek and her husband Skip of Eagan; and their children Trish, Karla, Andy, Dulcie and Eleni; Patti Kellum and her husband Bill of Apple Valley; and their children Paul, Jesse and Cory; daughter Joan Franks and her husband Jim of Apple Valley; and their children Mike and Chris; and son Ken Steffes and his wife Lisa of Apple Valley; and their children Danny and Elizabeth; brothers Al, Bob and Herb of Milwaukee; sisters Irene Gilgenback of Fon du lac, Wisconsin, Jane Hammer of Merrytown, Wisconsin and Joan Birkholtz of Milwaukee; and 6 great-grandchildren and dozens of nieces, nephews and many friends.

Col. Steffes graduated from Fond du Lac High School in 1938. He was a World War II P-38 fighter pilot who completed 50 combat missions and destroyed two enemy planes in aerial combat and assisted on another combat victory. While stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in 1946 he met his wife-to-be, Marjoire P. Ham, whose parents (Eardley and Pearl Ham) were lifelong residents of the Rapid City area. He concluded a 26-year military career as Chief of the EDPE Selection Office for the Air Force, the organization that selects computers for the Air Force. He retired as a Colonel in 1968. Following his retirement from the military Col. Steffes joined Control Data Corporation, where he worked for 17 1/2 years until his retirement in January 1986. Prior to leaving CDC Col. Steffes was Vice President of Control Data Middle East, with responsibility for operations in Iran (prior to the revolution), Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other mid-eastern countries, and managed several other major CDC projects. He was a graduate of the U. of Maryland and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and received numerous military awards including several Bronze Stars and the Legion of Merit.

During retirement he was President of The Retired Officers Association located at Ft. Snelling, a presenter on P-38 aerial combat and fighter tactics at the Planes of Fame at the Flying Cloud Air Port, and a frequent classroom presenter at area elementary schools.

Memorials preferred to the Minnesota Oncology Hematology Professional Ass'n in Burnsville or to the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

Carl E. Blessing

STURGIS - On January 16, 2002, our beloved Carl finished his journey through this life. He began his life on March 25, 1923, in Wrightsville, Pa., the son of Mary (Spence) and Jack Blessing, where he lived and worked until he went into the Army Air Corps. In January 1945, he met Orein Dumcke at Ellsworth Air Force Base. They were married on March 24, 1945, in Sturgis, and shared nearly 57 years of love and togetherness.

Carl worked very hard to care for his family. He was a simple man who enjoyed bowling, having coffee with friends, traveling to visit family, and just being around those he loved.

He retired from Fort Meade VA Hospital and J.U. Dixon Sawmill, where he made numerous friends.

Very grateful for sharing this wonderful man's life are his beloved wife, Orein Blessing, Sturgis; his children, Larry Blessing, Newcastle, Wyo., Michael Blessing, Peoria, Ill., R. Keith Blessing, Texas, Jeff Blessing and his wife, Judy, Belle Fourche, and Gisele Rodgers and her husband, Bill, Detroit, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, Tonya, Carl "Mickey," Kathy, Joy, Jackie, Jesse, Jordan, Melanie, Monica and Vanessa; six great-grandchildren; his favorite aunt, Elsie (and George) Unger, Red Lion, Pa.; two brothers, Edwin Blessing and his wife, Wilma, Louisville, Ky., and William Blessing, Vienna, W.V.; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Private family services will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery. Kinkade Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

The family extends an invitation to all Carl's friends to join them for fellowship and lunch at the Sturgis VFW Club on Tuesday, January 22, 2002, at 2 p.m.

Carl will truly be missed by one and all.

Pearl Violetta Brown

RAPID CITY - Pearl Violetta Brown, 94, Rapid City, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, in Rapid City.

Survivors include one brother, John Wastlund, Vermillion.

Her husband, William Brown, preceded her in death.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at Chapel of the Whispering Pines at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.

Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Service of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Casey J. Snyder

RAPID CITY - Casey J. Snyder, 15, of Rapid City, died Monday, January 14, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his mother, Carla Snyder, Rapid City; his father, Charlie Snyder, Rapid City; three sisters, Juanita Gorder, Fargo, N.D., and Duanna Beebe and Jessica Snyder, both of Rapid City; maternal grandparents, Robert and Marge Beebe, Burnsville, Minn.; and paternal grandparents, Tom and Jan Snyder, Rapid City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today, January 17, at the funeral home, with Evangelist Jeff Reed officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Gladys M. Varns

BELLE FOURCHE - Gladys M. Varns, 90, Belle Fourche and formerly of Lead, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Belle Fourche Health Care Center.

Survivors include two sons, Harvey Varns and Orville Varns, both of Belle Fourche; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gerald Smith, Sioux Falls.

There will be no visitation.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead, with the Rev. Dan Varns officiating.

Inurnment will be at a later date at Custer Cemetery.

Linda Lorena (Meints) Miner

PAHRUMP, Nev. - Linda Lorena Miner, 60, of Pahrump, Nev., died on Friday, January 11, at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas, Calif.

Linda was born on August 3, 1941, in Columbia, S.D., to Fred E. and Adina W. (Lunzmann) Meints. She was raised on the family farm near Columbia, S.D., where she graduated from Columbia High School with the class of 1959. She then attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, S.D.

On February 27, 1965, Linda married Allen Kent Miner in Rapid City, S.D. The couple moved throughout most of the West and Midwest over the next 20 years with the Boeing Company. She retired from Boeing in Everett, Wash., in 1997, and the couple moved to Pahrump, Nev., where they completed a new home in 2000.

Linda was a devoted wife and loving mother who took great pleasure in creating a comfortable and caring home for her husband, children, grandchildren and many friends. She was fond of cooking and traveling, and enjoyed her retirement by journeying with her husband to New England, Alaska, England, Scotland and Wales.

Linda's survivors include her husband, Allen Miner of Pahrump, Nev.; eldest son, Jeff Miner of Renton, Wash.; daughter, Lori Wade of Lancaster, Calif.; youngest son, Todd Miner of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two sisters, Anita Hagen of Seattle, Wash., and Marlene Wockenfuss of Ft. Meyer, Fla.; and her four grandchildren, Tyler, Sarah, Aaron and Grace.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and three brothers.

Visitation will be Friday, January 18, at Behrens Funeral Home from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Linda's funeral will be held at Behrens Funeral Home in Rapid City, S.D., on Saturday, January 19, at 11 a.m. The burial will follow at the Piedmont Cemetery located in Piedmont, S.D.

Pallbearers will be Stanley Miner, Virgle Miner, Vernie Miner, Richard Wade, Steve Heidzig and Steve Lessleyoung.

The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Lucille Campbell

SPEARFISH - Helen Lucille Campbell, 84, Spearfish, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Survivors include two brothers, Floyd Campbell, Sturgis, and Ross Campbell, Riverton, Wash.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Hillsview Church of the Nazarene in Spearfish.

Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.

Wilbur Frederick Beisner

RAPID CITY - Wilbur Frederick Beisner, 94, Rapid City, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include four daughters, Jacqueline Neill, Cozad, Neb., Marilyn Eberly, Lincoln, Neb., Janice Peel, Indianapolis, and Linda DeMaro, Belvidere, N.J.; two sons, John Beisner, Bloomington, Ill., and Ron Thompson, Wasilla, Alaska; one brother, Elmer Beisner, Lexington, Neb.; two sisters, Esther Moore and Fern Cameron, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

His wife, Erma Beisner, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be for one hour before services, which will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Duane Duley officiating.

Burial will be at Pine Lawn Cemetery in Rapid City.

Lloyd E. Looking Elk

BATESLAND - Lloyd E. Looking Elk, 53, Batesland, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, in Rapid City.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Standing Bear, Batesland; one stepson, Charles Standing Bear, Batesland; one stepdaughter, Harriet Wilson, Pine Ridge; his father, Stanley Looking Elk Sr., Oglala; three sisters, Debbie Jensen, Pine Ridge, Karen Eagle, Fort Yates, N.D., and Heather Looking Elk, Oglala; one brother, David Looking Elk, Rushville, Neb.; and five grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran.

A one-night wake will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at Loneman School in Oglala.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the school, with the Rev. Simon Looking Elk officiating.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.
