Warren Kyle Pellegrin

SENECA, S.C. — Warren Kyle Pellegrin, 75, Seneca and formerly of Enning, S.D., died peacefully at his home Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002.

He was born August 14, 1926, at Sturgis, S.D., to Germain and Lydia (Cox) Pellegrin. He graduated from Sturgis High School in 1944, and enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Pellegrin proudly served as an FC3, fire-control man and gun director aboard the USS Fred T. Berry DD-858, a newly launched destroyer-class ship which saw frequent battle throughout the Pacific campaign. After the war, Mr. Pellegrin returned to his beloved South Dakota to pursue a college education at South Dakota State University, Brookings. There, he spent three-and-a-half years pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacology and Economics. After obtaining his Associates degree in 1950, Mr. Pellegrin, whose parents homesteaded near Enning, S.D., returned to Meade County and began a promising career teaching grades one through eight at several rural schools. Mr. Pellegrin taught in rural Meade County until the mid-1950s. In 1956, Mr. Pellegrin moved to Las Vegas, Nev., where he was employed as a plant manager at the Henderson Titanium Plant.

After a lengthy hiatus from teaching school, Mr. Pellegrin returned to South Dakota and finished his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics at SDSU in 1971. Before graduating, Mr. Pellegrin obtained his teaching certificate, and resumed his teaching career as a student teacher at a school for wayward boys in Plankinton, S.D. After graduation, Mr. Pellegrin taught sixth, seventh and eighth grades at Elm Springs, S.D., until 1975, when he returned to his hometown of Enning, where he remained for the rest of his career. There, Mr. Pellegrin found true joy in teaching a generation of rural-school students.

Mr. Pellegrin received many teaching and community accolades during his tenure at Enning, including a citation for his organization and implementation of rural Oratory and Math contests between several country schools. Even with all of his success teaching, nothing pleased Mr. Pellegrin more than simply seeing his students grow to adulthood to be good quality citizens. Mr. Pellegrin will be long remembered as a true friend and dedicated educator to many in the Meade County community.

Mr. Pellegrin, also a cattle rancher, was active in many rural community activities, including team-roping announcing, basketball coaching, and student ski trips to the Black Hills. Mr. Pellegrin was also a proud member of the Sturgis VFW, Paha Sapa Chapter. Mr.Pellegrin's hobbies included ranching, reading Western novels and listening to Big Band music. However, his greatest pastime, which brought him much joy, was the planting of trees. Mr. Pellegrin could usually be found tending to saplings at one of the many tree patches on his ranch southeast of Enning. In several areas, which were once empty plains, now stand several groves of mixed hardwood, a testament to his quiet patience and ability to gently nurture.

Mr. Pellegrin is survived by his beloved wife Francine, Seneca, S.C.; son Warren G. Pellegrin, Stafford, Va.; daughters Danielle Pellegrin, Napa, Calif., and Michelle Pellegrin, Berkeley, Calif.; and sister Gwen Simons, Spearfish, S.D.; and grandchildren Megan Garcia, Cambridge, Mass., and Lindsey, Sydney, Kyle and Shanna Pellegrin, Stafford, Va. Also surviving Mr. Pellegrin are his stepchildren Sylvia (Likes) Aldrich, Sandusky, Ohio, and Christopher Likes, Bradenton, Fla., and Steven Likes, Sandusky, Ohio.

Mr. Pellegrin was preceded in death by his parents Germain and Lydia Pellegrin; brother Eugene; sister Wanda; son Douglas; daughter Marlyn "Molly"; and recently by stepdaughter Corinne.

Family and friends will be received at Carlsen and Aldinger Funeral Home, 1440 Junction Avenue, Sturgis, on Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1319 Junction Avenue, Sturgis, at 1 p.m., with internment to follow at the Bear Butte Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rapid City chapter of the American Heart Association, at (800) 437-9710.
