Charlene Ann Parish

RAPID CITY -- Charlene Ann Parish, 63, Rapid City, died Dec. 30, 2001, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include two daughters, Lonnie Maye Almond, Alliance, Neb., and Peggy Ann Spindler, Rapid City; two sons, Richard Laine Parish, Cheyenne, Wyo., and David Lee Parish, Allen, Texas; five sisters, Louise Olson, Alice Birnbaum, Lucielle Anthony, Mary Haugen and Sharon Kuiper; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 4, at Olive Presbyterian Church in Platte, with Rev. Charles H. Aurand III. officiating. Inurnment will follow at Platte Catholic Cemetery.

Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Don Running

COLVILLE, Wash. - Don Running, 76, Colville and formerly of Spearfish, S.D., died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Spokane.

He was born Nov. 23, 1925, in Spearfish, son of Josef and Hazel (Varland) Running. He graduated from high school in Spearfish in 1943, then served in the U.S. Army in World War II and the Korean conflict. He worked as a draftsman in oil exploration for the Western Geophysical Company for five years.

He married Eloise J. Hanks on Nov. 3, 1951, in Tacoma. The couple moved to Forest Grove, Ore., where he joined his twin brother, Hans Running, in a photography business for 12 years. In 1964 they moved to Colville where they owned and operated Don's Studio and Camera Shop. Upon his retirement in 1997, their business was the longest operated single owner business on Colville's Main Street - 33 years.

Don was an avid sportsman and sports fan. He taught many kids to water ski, drive and swim, coached Little League baseball and golfed daily. He attended every single football, basketball and baseball game that his children were involved in. He was a handyman and could repair almost anything. He was also a great community supporter: member of the Colville Chamber of Commerce, Elks Lodge, Kiwanis Club and the Benchwarmers.

He is survived by his wife, Eloise, Colville; daughter, Kolette Bailey, Spokane; sons, Mark Running, Mission Viejo, Calif., and Kevin Running, Kennewick; sisters, Lois Henderson, Laguna Niguel, Calif., and Helen Wood, Littleton, Colo.; brothers, Raymond Running, Spearfish, and Hans Running, Hillsboro, Ore.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, James Running.

Services were held in Colville under the direction of Danekas Funeral Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Mount Carmel Hospital Foundation or Colville Food Bank.

Bryon L. Schuelke

BARNESVILLE, Minn. - Bryon L. Schuelke, 51, Barnesville, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo, N.D.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta; one son, Clifford J. Schuelke, Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D.; his mother, Edith Schuelke, North Ft. Myers, Fla.; one brother, David Schuelke, North Ft. Myers; and one sister, Lauren Schuelke, Lehigh Acres, Fla.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Barnesville, with the Rev. Tom Junkert officiating.

Dobmeier Funeral Home in Barnesville is in charge of arrangements.

Waldon Philip 'Wally' Thiel

STURGIS - Waldon Philip "Wally" Thiel, 80, Sturgis, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Fort Meade VA Medical Center.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a prayer service for close friends and family beginning at 7 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Howard Smith officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Wally was born April 23, 1921, at Aberdeen, S.D., to Harry and Orphah (Miller) Thiel. After graduating from Central High School, he studied journalism at Northern State College for two years. This was the beginning of a lifetime of writing for numerous publications and organizations. During World War II, Wally served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. After a medical discharge, Wally returned to South Dakota and was initially employed at the U.S. Post Office in Aberdeen. After marrying Elaine V. Wolter in July of 1945 at Aberdeen, Wally and Elaine farmed and fed beef cattle for 31 years. During that period, Wally was an officer and leader in the Jaycees, SD Livestock Feeders Association, Toastmasters Club, Brown County 4-H and Public Library and SD Quarter Horse Association. In addition, he was a leader in the Republican Party on state and national levels during the Eisenhower administration. Wally was an approved judge for seven breeds of horses and judged events throughout the U.S. and Canada.

In 1977, Wally and Elaine moved to Sturgis. He was employed with TriState Livestock News, traveled seven states as a field man, and wrote articles for the paper, including his popular "Hoss News" column.

Wally was a member and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, Sturgis, and lifetime member of the Elks and Kiwanis.

Wally is survived by his wife, Elaine, Sturgis; one sister, Jan McCarthy, Rochester, Wash.; and four sons and their wives, Brian and Judith Thiel, Woodbridge, Va., Jayson and Kate Thiel, White Bear Lake, Minn., Mark and Vicki Thiel, Belle Fourche, S.D., and Brent and Nancy Thiel, Isabel, S.D. Grandchildren include Yvette, Kill Devil Hills, N.C., Todd, Baltimore, Md., Scott and Ryan, Chicago, Ill., Trevor, Kerbi and Tyler, Belle Fourche, and Skyler and Abbey, Isabel, S.D.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established through the Long Term Care Program, c/o Nancy Worth, Fort Meade VA Medical Center, Fort Meade, SD 57741.

Lou Anne Hopkins Weber

RAPID CITY - Lou Anne Hopkins Weber, 68, Rapid City, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include four children, Michiko Winona Sandman, Phoenix, Ariz., John Philip Weber, Rapid City, Ingrid Margaret Knox, Atlanta, Ga., and Anne Nicole Thares, Minneapolis, Minn.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Ida May Wicks

DUPREE - Ida May Wicks, 72, rural Dupree, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at PHS Hospital in Eagle Butte.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Wicks and LeRoy Wicks, both of Faith; four daughters, Louise Stapert, Aberdeen, Lucy Procopovici and Fay, both of Denver, Colo., and Fern Barrick, Kent, Wash.; one brother, Roald Mitchell, Dupree; and 11 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Faith, and one hour before services at the church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Faith, with the Rev. Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Floyd W. 'Shortie' Wilcox Sr.

RAPID CITY - Floyd W. "Shortie" Wilcox Sr., 83, Rapid City, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He was born on Dec. 14, 1918, at Stickney, S.D., the son of Lucius and Vera Margaret (Eads) Wilcox. Floyd attended school in Stickney and Timber Lake, S.D. He joined the CCC's at Fort Meade, S.D., and served in the CCC's from 1939 to 1941. While in the CCC Camps he learned his trade in welding and auto mechanics. Throughout his early years he worked in various South Dakota locations as an auto mechanic. In August of 1946 he started a lengthy career in road construction as a mechanic and welder for the Peter Kewitt & Lindekugel & Sons construction companies. For a few years in the 1960s he worked for the Boeing Co. as a welder on the missile sites throughout western South Dakota.

Floyd married Catherine Livermont on Aug. 17, 1942, at Dupree, S.D.

He served as the Business Agent for the Operating Engineer's for the State of South Dakota in the 1970s. He was a member of the Moose Lodge. His favorite enjoyments in life were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as hunting, fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife Catherine, Rapid City; his eight children, Jacqueline Huffman and her husband Richard, Gering, Neb., Rochelle "Rockie" Oakland and her husband Michael, Pierre, S.D., Cheryle Holvig, Rapid City, Gloria Brown and her husband Gary, Rapid City, Ronald Wilcox and his wife Ella, Rapid City, Patricia Phillips and her husband Don, Rapid City, Leslie Wilcox and his wife Joyce, Rapid City, and Floyd "J.R." Wilcox and his wife Robin, Box Elder, S.D.; twin brother Lloyd Wilcox, Ponchatoula, La., and brothers Jerome Wilcox, St. George, Utah, and Gary Wilcox, Rapid City; sisters, Norma Simmons, Salinas, Calif., Geraldine Heady, Phillipsburg, Mont., Nila Kolbeck, Drummond, Mont., Avenella Doell, Newcastle, Wyo., Marva Goodsell, Rapid City, and Carol Walker, Scottsburg, Ind.; 21 grandchildren; 14 step grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 12 step great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Arduth Wilcox; a brother, Bud Wilcox; a grandson, Eric Mathew Brown; a sister-in-law; and three brothers-in law.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan 2, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home, with Rev. Gerald Scherer officiating. Interment will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Crippled Children.

Mary Bettcher Horst

HOT SPRINGS - Mary Bettcher Horst, 97, Hot Springs, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs.

Survivors include her husband, Carl Horst, Plainview, Neb.; two daughters, Delores Raterman, Norfolk, Neb., and Bernice Landers, Hot Springs; one sister, Erna Bird, Redlands, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 2, at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Peter Dahlberg officiating.

Wilma Bell Johnson

RAPID CITY - Wilma Bell Johnson, 85, Rapid City, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Johnson, Rapid City; one brother, Ralph Snyder; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City.

William V. Coyle

RAPID CITY - William V. Coyle, 83, Rapid City, died Sunday, April 28, at a local nursing home. He had been in failing health for the past year.

He was born July 1, 1918, at Philip, S.D., where he grew up, the son of Ray and Anna (Hockel) Coyle. He had four brothers and three sisters. He graduated from Philip High School, after which he worked in the Court House in Philip in the Social Security Office in a youth program. Later, he attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, where he attained his B.S. degree in civil engineering.

After graduation, he was commissioned in the Navy and was employed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics at Langley Field, Virginia, and at the David W. Taylor Model Basin, Washington, D.C., as a structural engineer for the next three years. He was also associated with a consulting engineering firm in Washington, D.C.

He returned to the School of Mines in 1947 as a member of the faculty and served as a professor, and in 1963-66 became Department Head of Civil Engineering for 18 years. Through a leave of absence he completed his Master's Degree at the University of Missouri in 1951.

On August 8, 1953, he was married to Myrna Carpenter Kimber in Rapid City, where the couple has resided since.

Through a Ford Foundation Grant, he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology the summers of 1962-1965, and then went on to Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and Purdue University in the summers of 1966-67-68, working on his Doctorate in Structural Design. Since that time, he had continued to teach in the Civil Engineering Department at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

During the summer vacation periods, he was employed as a consulting structural engineer for contractors, architects and engineers and other firms of attorneys-at-law. He prepared numerous engineering reports on structural analysis and design. He completed extensive sponsored research which related to buildings and structural materials for publication.

He was a member of the S.D. Engineers and Architects, a Registered Professional Engineer, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, American Concrete Institute, a national member of the Society of Engineering Education, and had served as a member of the Athletic Committee and S.D.I.C. and N.A.I.A. Code Committee, the Academia Advisory Council, the Scholarship and Loan Committee, Chairman of the Building Committee for Surbeck Center and was given honorary membership in Sigma Tau, Theta Tau and the Endowment Association. He had received many awards in recognition of his numerous professional activities, such as the Guy March Coveted Award, Meritorious Recognition Award for professional service to the city planning commission for seven years, National Athletic Recognition Award, Outstanding Teacher Award SDSM&T, Ford Foundation Award, American Concrete Institute Honorary Award and the Athletic (N.A.I.A.) Hall of Fame.

His interest and interaction extended well beyond the classroom. Over the years, many students came to Bill to seek his comments, advice, career planning, financial worries and many academic problems. He was always there to help.

He is survived by his wife, Myrna, Rapid City; two sisters, Dorothy Heidler, Faith, S.D., and Patty Shaffer, Englewood, Colo.; two brothers, Eugene "Sonny" Coyle, Rapid City, and John "Buddy" Coyle, Philip, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Ray Coyle; one sister, Nellie; and two brothers, Joe and Bob.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 1, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be Thursday, May 2, at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. David Miller officiating.

A private family burial will follow at the Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.

A memorial has been established to the Bill Coyle Scholarship Fund at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

William E. Gould

CUSTER - William E. Gould, 78, Custer, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Custer.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Custer.

Fred 'Fritz' Jockheck Jr.

HURON - Fred "Fritz" Jockheck Jr., 75, Huron and formerly of the Bonilla-Hitchcock area, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Huron Nursing Home.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Jockheck, Huron; three sons, Leland Jockheck, Lyons, Mich., Allen Jockheck, Pierre, and David Jockheck, Sioux Falls; three daughters, Vicky Kirby, Sioux Falls, Rita Wilhelm, Faulkton, and Marla Wolterstorff, Worthington, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Reno, Hitchcock, and Gladys Schilling, Huron; and one brother, Don Jockheck, Bonilla.

Visitation will be Wednesday afternoon and evening at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, and before services Thursday, May 2, at United Methodist Church in Hitchcock.

A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Winifred Rinehart and the Rev. Jan Price officiating.

Burial will be at Altoona Cemetery in Hitchcock.

Jerry R. Vitters

BURBANK, Calif. - Jerry R. Vitters, 55, Burbank and formerly of Miller, S.D., died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at a Los Angeles hospital.

Survivors include two daughters, Sherry Brown, Los Angeles, and Heather Schaffer, Wellsboro, Pa.; one son, Jared Vitters, Biddeford, Maine; two grandchildren; one sister, Mary Wilson, Watertown, S.D.; and seven brothers, Richard Vitters, Fremont, Neb., Donald Vitters, Bloomington, Minn., Wayne Vitters, Hibbing, Minn., Albert Vitters, Richland, Texas, David Vitters, Rapid City, Clifford Vitters, Milbank, S.D., and John Vitters, Columbia, S.C.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1970.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at Reck Funeral Home in Miller.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 3, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Kent Atkinson officiating.

Burial will be at St. Lawrence Cemetery.
