Lane Johnston

INTERIOR - Lane Johnston was born on April 21, 1930, at Dalzell, South Dakota, the son of William and Cecil (Richards) Johnston. He grew up in the Elm Springs area and attended grade school there, and high school in New Underwood.

He was united in marriage to Carol "Midge" O'Rourke on May 20, 1950. They lived in the Interior area for over 50 years.

Lane loved ranching and was a charter member of the Family Wagon Train. He and his wife hosted numerous family trail rides at the ranch. In 1989 he and his team and wagon traveled the entire Centennial West River Wagon Train route. He was a charter member of the Interior Roping Club, served as Jackson County deputy sheriff in the 1960s, and hosted the Crossroads of America Children's tour for underprivileged children for several years.

Lane took great pride and was very active in all of his grandchildren's accomplishments.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Midge Johnston of Interior; three sons, Jerry Johnston and his wife Fae of Interior, South Dakota, Stacey Johnston of Rapid City, and Charles "Chick" Johnston of Interior; four daughters, Terry Jo McDonnell and her husband Steve of Quinn, Angie Charlson and her husband Don of Rochester, Minnesota, Joyce Benne and her husband Sam of Rapid City, and Lila "Lulu" Johnston of Interior; 20 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Johnston of Wall, and Gary Johnston of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and three sisters, Joann Olien of Rapid City, Jean Colvin of Rapid City, and Sharon Maasch of Sheridan, Wyoming.

Lane was preceded in death by one grandson, Chris "Bubba" Smoot; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Johnston; and two sisters, Mary Remer and Carol Handley.

Funeral services for Lane Johnston, age 72, of Interior, will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2002, at the Interior school, with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating.

Lane died of cancer on April 22, 2002, at his son Stacey's home in Rapid City.

Visitation will be held 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.

Interment will be in the Interior Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Hospice of the Black Hills.

Reece Craig Trautwein

RAPID CITY - Reece Craig Trautwein, 5 months, Rapid City, died April 22, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Reece was born October 25, 2001, in Rapid City.

His parents, Kiley Steffen and James "J.C." Trautwein, Rapid City; maternal grandparents, Doug and Cindy Steffen, Gregory, S.D.; paternal grandparents, Sue Trautwein, Wheatland, Wyo., survive him, and Bart Trautwein, Cheyenne, Wyo.; six great-grandparents; three aunts; and two uncles.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at Behrens Mortuary. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Westside Baptist Church in Rapid City, with Pastor Russ Grim officiating.

Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials would be appreciated by the family to the Neo-Natal ICU at Rapid City Regional Hospital in c/o First Fidelity Bank, 113 East 6th, Gregory, SD 57533 or First State Bank, P.O. Box 39, Wheatland, WY 82201.

Ruth Anna (Beth) Grauel

SEMMES, Ala. - Ruth Anna (Behl) Grauel, 91, passed away Friday, April 19, 2002, in Mobile, Alabama.

She was born in Teton, S.D., on September 16, 1910, to Alvin C. and Mary (Becker) Behl. They moved to Midland, S.D., where she was raised and graduated from Midland High School. She then moved to Pierre, where she was employed.

On July 7, 1934, she was united in marriage in Philip to Charles C. Grauel of Pierre.

She resided in Rapid City until June 1997, when she moved to Semmes, Ala., to reside with her daughter until her death.

She is survived by daughter, Rose Marie (Grauel) Musgrove of Semmes, Ala.; daughter-in-law, Verna (Black) Grauel of Black Hawk, S.D.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother, husband, brother, sister and son.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 25, 2002, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 26, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Behrens Mortuary.

Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Toni Eberle

EDGEMONT - Toni Eberle, 54, Edgemont, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs.

Michael Harrison Young

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. - Michael Harrison Young, 53, Castle Rock and formerly of Rapid City, died Friday, April 19, 2002, in a motor-vehicle accident.

Survivors include three sons, Michael Young Jr., Seattle, and Jamie Young and Joshua Young, both of Hines, Minn.; his parents, Wayne and Wilma Young, Haines City, Fla.; one brother, Patrick Young, Haines City; and two sisters, Colleen Brooks, Castle Rock, and Shannon Jensen, Rapid City.

Services will be held in Black Duck, Minn.

Dundee-Haines City Funeral Home of Dundee, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

Jule Trode

CUSTER - Jule Trode, 63, Custer, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Custer.

Lemoin A. Ohlen

RICHMOND, Calif. - Lemoin A. Ohlen, 86, Richmond and formerly of Rapid City, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002.

Survivors include his wife, Louella Storm Ohlen; one son, Darrel; one daughter, Karen; one grandson; and three sisters, Phyllis Herman, Lois Dyce and Mavis Sorensen, all of the Puget Sound, Wash., area.

He served in the U.S. National Guard before WWII, and during the war served in the U.S. Navy Seabees.

Private services were held in Richmond.

John W. Crowson

HOT SPRINGS - John W. Crowson, 80, Hot Springs, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs, with the Rev. Lyle Spicer officiating.

Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs is in charge of arrangements.

Clifford Harry Watts

RAPID CITY - Clifford Harry Watts, 74, died on April 21, 2002, in Rapid City.

Cliff was born on June 2, 1927, to Mollie Lessert Watts and Claude Watts in Omaha, Nebraska. After his mother's death in 1929, he was raised by his grandmother, who died in 1931. Cliff moved to Kilgore, Nebraska, at age four to be raised by an aunt and uncle. He was a good student and loved playing basketball in high school.

After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Cliff attended Chadron State College. He married Dorothy Diane Severns from Cody, Nebraska, on April 17, 1948. They recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.

Cliff worked in the banking industry for 20 years in Chadron, North Platte, and Cody, Nebraska, and was Bank President in Cody for seven years. The family moved to Rapid City in 1969, where Cliff worked at the stock brokerage B.C. Christopher. After leaving B.C. Christopher, he owned and operated Taco John's franchises, at one time owning three. At the time of his death he owned two Taco John's in Chadron, where he also kept his membership in the Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Watts of Rapid City; two daughters, Mollie Kathleen Pettigrew of Rapid City and Janice Calvert of St. Cloud, Minnesota; two sons, Craig Watts of Petaluma, California, and Chris Watts of Milford, Iowa; six grandsons; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his three sisters, Geneva Getzinger, Vera Watts and Velma Nelson; his brother, Don Bauer; and a granddaughter, Sylvia Calvert.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapid City, with The Rev. David A. Cameron officiating.

Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.

Gerald Gene Gilbert

SAN ANTONIO - Gerald Gene Gilbert died at San Antonio, Texas, on March 28, 2002. Jerry was born to Freeman J. and Ethel J. (Sornson) Gilbert on July 17, 1937, in Belle Fourche. He graduated from Maplewood Academy in Hutchinson, Minnesota, in 1955. In 1960 he received his Degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska. He married Lois Ann Finck in Boulder, Colorado, in 1962. Their son Freeman Jay was born in Boulder in 1964.

Jerry spent most of his career in government service, much of which was in Germany. He and his family loved the twenty-one years that they lived and worked in that country. In 1995, they returned to the United States and made their home in San Antonio, where he worked at Ft. Sam Houston.

Throughout his life he continued his education and his love and cultivation of music and photography. He earned a Master's Degree in Systems Management through the University of Southern California. As a youth he had learned to play clarinet, oboe, flute, alto and bass recorders and guitar, and played in the Belle Fourche Cowboy Band during high-school and college summers. As an adult he learned trumpet in Germany, and he and his son played in a band which performed at the Martin Luther Monument during a Reformation Day Commemoration. He organized and directed church choirs, singing both English and German hymns. Photography was also a lifelong pursuit, and he was about to begin repairing his father's antique 35mm Kodak just days before his battle with cancer came to an end.

He is survived by his wife Lois, a tireless caregiver during his illness; his son Freeman Jay of Berrein Springs, Michigan; his father Dr. Freeman Gilbert of Spearfish; his sister Ardyth Helmer and husband Larry Helmer of Belle Fourche; and his brother Wayne Gilbert and wife Kris Thielen of Rapid City. He was preceded in death by his mother Ethel Gilbert in 1997 and his brother Jim Gilbert in 2001.

A memorial service will be held at the Spearfish Seventh-day Adventist Church on April 27, 2002, at 2:30 p.m.

Arthur F. Sigler

RAPID CITY - Arthur F. Sigler, 76, Rapid City, formerly of Oregon, Illinois, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at his Rapid City residence after a brief illness. Arthur was born Feb. 26, 1926, at Oregon, Illinois, the son of George and Mary (Buse) Sigler.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and retired in 1963 after serving for 21 years. Following retirement, he served for 10 years in the Air Force reserves. He retired from civil service in 1993. He was a Prisoner of War for two years in Korea during World War II.

He was a member of St. Therese the Little Flower Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Mary Sigler, Rapid City; two sons, David Sigler, Atlanta, Georgia, and Ian Sigler, Rapid City; a daughter, Yvonne Morris, San Francisco, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Carol Remp, Cortland, Ohio, and Cheryl Freeman, Spearman, Texas; three stepsons, Robert Gaede, Rapid City, David Gaede, Spearman, Texas, and Gary Gaede, Rapid City; a sister, Betty Tapp, Machesney Park, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vera, in 1978; a stepson, Richard Gaede, in 1985; eight brothers; and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. today, with a Christian wake service at 8 p.m., at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of St. Therese the Little Flower, with Rev. Brian Sorensen and Rev. Bryan Lane as concelebrants. Deacon Claude Sauer will be assisting.

Interment will be at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, with military honors provided by TREA.

A memorial has been established.

Judith Helen 'Judy' Cole

SUNDANCE, Wyo. - Judith Helen "Judy" Cole, 46, Sundance, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include one daughter, Tami Weaver, Aladdin, Wyo.; three grandsons; and one sister, Janet Lake, Sundance.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Fidler-Roberts Funeral Chapel in Sundance.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, at Sundance United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ed Bollack officiating.

Burial will follow at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Sundance.

Memorials may be made to the Cardiac Rehab Unit of Crook County Medical Services District or to a memorial of the donor's choice.
