Anita Avis McCoy

NEWCASTLE, Wyo. - Anita Avis McCoy, 60, Newcastle, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Wyoming Medical Center, Casper.

Survivors include two daughters, Jodie Schossow, Casper, and Donnette Alm, Gillette; one son, Benny Dial, Newcastle; four sisters, Ila Cornelias, Oklahoma, Alice Smith, Oregon, and Edith Inich and Jane Oleson, both of Newcastle; two brothers, Ken McCoy, Gillette, and Rusty McCoy, Newcastle; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Don Dial, preceded her in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Worden Chapel in Newcastle, with the Rev. Brotzman officiating.

Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newcastle.

Donald E. Scott

RAPID CITY - After a long battle with cancer, Donald E. Scott, 68, of Rapid City passed away at his home on Sunday, April 14, 2002.

Don was born September 3, 1933, in Buffalo, Ind., to Raymond and Helen Scott.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth L. Scott of Rapid City; daughter Diana Turner and husband Michael of Hot Springs; son Donald E. Scott II and wife Nancy of Rapid City; four brothers, Orlo Scott of Monticello, Ind., Robert Scott and O. Richard Leis, both of Buffalo, Ind., and William Leis of Norway, Ind.; two sisters, Charlotte Rater of Monon, Ind., and Linda (Sue) Delk of Daleville, Ind.; one very special aunt, Iva Jean Holsema of Monticello, Ind.; five grandsons, Ross Turner of Phoenix, Ariz., Carl Turner of Minneapolis, Minn., and Nathaniel Scott, Matthew Scott and Lucas Scott of Rapid City; one granddaughter, Jessica Scott of Rapid City; and special friends, Carpus Radcliff of Denton, Texas, and Rick Myers of Booneville, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Scott, and his mother, Helen Leis.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, and then on Thursday for one hour before services.

Services will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2002, at noon, with the Rev. Tim Coats officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, with military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard.

Douglas Mark Ellison

RAPID CITY - Douglas Mark Ellison, 45, beloved husband, father, son and brother, left this world unexpectedly on Friday, April 12, 2002. He died of a heart attack at his home.

He was born on June 25, 1956, in Rapid City, S.D., to M.F. "Doc" and Betty Ellison, He grew up there with his three brothers and two sisters.

He married his wife, Tammy Borszich, on September 9, 1978. They shared 23 years together along with their treasured daughter, Heather, who is 15 and a freshman at Central High School.

Doug was employed at Merillat and was with that company for 15 years. His favorite things to do included jet skiing at Sheridan Lake, bowling, playing cribbage with family members and spending time with Harley and Quita, his canine pals.

He is preceded in death by his father, M.F. "Doc" Ellison. He is survived by his wife, Tammy, and daughter Heather; mother Betty of Mesa, Ariz.; sisters Lynn Huntington of Camarillo, Calif., and Janet Costello of Sioux Falls, S.D.; brothers Jim of Cary, Ill., Scott of Sioux City, Neb., and Craig of Nashville, Tenn.; and 19 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will begin on Wednesday, April 17, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kirk Funeral Home, followed by a rosary service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, at St. Therese Catholic Church. Interment will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the church.

Memorials may be addressed to the Heather Ellison College Fund, 3927 S. Winfield Ct., Rapid City, SD 57701.

Vera F. Harris

BLACK HAWK - Vera F. Harris, 91, Black Hawk, died at Beverly Healthcare of the Black Hills, Sunday, April 14, 2002.

Vera was born March 20, 1911, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Clarence and Francis Utter. In 1939, she married Ross Logue in Creston, Iowa. To this union two children were born, John and Mary.

Vera married Clarence Harris on October 23, 1957, in Sturgis, S.D. Clarence Harris adopted John and Mary. Vera and Clarence owned and operated the Black Hawk Cafe in the late 1950s and early 1970s.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Spencer and her husband Mike of Helena, Montana; stepdaughters, Colleen Ohrtman and her husband Harry of Rapid City, S.D., and Hallie Hunt and her husband, Rob, of Dixon, Iowa; stepson John Midey and his wife, Debra, of Davenport, Iowa; and daughter-in-law Sherri Harris-Dunne and her husband, Dick, of Rapid City. Vera has been blessed with 19 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Vera was fortunate to receive love and care from her caregivers at Beverly Healthcare of the Black Hills. She was a loving, kind and gentle lady who will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Both husbands and son, John Harris Sr., her parents and three sisters preceded Vera in death.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City. Services will be held at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Allen Bates officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hawk Cemetery. A gathering with the family and friends at the home of Harry and Colleen Ohrtman, 3581 Mill Rd., Rapid City, will follow the burial.

A memorial has been established at the Black Hawk Community Church for the Outreach Ministry.

Robert F. Hogarth

STURGIS - Robert F. Hogarth, 77, of Sturgis, died at the Rapid City Regional Hospital on Saturday evening, April 13, 2002.

Funeral services will be Thursday, April 18, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church.

Bob was born February 18, 1925, at Deadwood, S.D., to Robert Roy and Millie (Franks) Hogarth. He grew up in Deadwood and graduated from Deadwood High School in 1944. He was drafted and sent to the Philippines. After the war, Bob worked for Homestake Gold Mine for 40 years. He later operated the Montgomery Ward Store in Sturgis from 1973 until 1985.

Bob was married to Beverly Scott in Spearfish, S.D., on March 19, 1948.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Hogarth, Sturgis; one son and his wife, Rev. Randy and Terri Hogarth, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and one daughter and her husband, Kay and David Meyers of Laramie, Wyo. Survivors also include five grandchildren,

Lindsey and Andy Meyers, and Ashley, Ben, and Taryn Hogarth.

His parents and two sisters, Doris Kennedy and June Smith, preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established to the United Methodist Church.

Michael Rollo Larsen

FARMINGDALE - Michael Rollo Larsen, 46, Farmingdale, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at his home as a result of a heart attack.

He was born October 27, 1955, at St. John's Hospital, Rapid City, S.D., to Rollo A. and Katharina (Knappe) Larsen. He attended Farmingdale schools and graduated from Central High School, Rapid City, S.D., in 1973. He then worked at various jobs.

He married Faye Aker and to this union two sons, Travis Michael and Curtis Carl, were born.

He is survived by two sons, Travis Larsen, Black Hawk, S.D., and Curtis Larsen, U.S. Navy stationed at Virginia Beach, Va.; a grandson, Kilan Sky Larsen, Black Hawk, S.D.; parents, Rollo and Katharina Larsen, Farmingdale, S.D.; brother, Carl and wife Barbara Larsen, Rapid City, S.D.; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins; a very close friend, Rod Ness, Rapid City, S.D.; and many, many other friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Rapid City, S.D., with Rev. Raymond Adams as officiant. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Larsen Cemetery, Farmingdale, S.D. Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Behrens Mortuary, Rapid City, S.D.

A memorial has been established in Mike's name.

Behrens Mortuary is in care of arrangements.

Muriel Barns-Francis

MITCHELL — Muriel Barns-Francis, age 79, of Mitchell, died April 12, 2002 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Visitation will be at the Will Funeral Chapel Monday from 4-8 PM with an Order of the Eastern Star service at 7:30 PM. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.

She was born April 3, 1923 in Wessington Springs, SD to James and Meta (Lawson) Carson. Muriel graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1941. She then entered nurses training at the Methodist Hospital graduating as a registered nurse in 1944. In the fall of 1944 she entered the U.S. Army Nurses Corp. Muriel served one year in the states and then one year in an evacuation hospital in Germany. After her honorable discharge she returned to the Wessington Springs area.

Muriel married Jay M. Barns on June 23, 1946 in Wessington Springs. The couple made their home in Mitchell, SD in 1956. Muriel was employed at Firesteel Healthcare for 16 years as a nurse and then as director of nursing. Muriel married Albert Francis on Jan. 19, 1985, in Mitchell, SD. After her retirement she served as a county commissioner in Davison County for eight years. She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, PEO Chapter J member since 1941, the Order of the Eastern Star, VFW and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by four children, James Barns and his wife, Sharlene, Allen, TX, Steven Barns and his wife, Sherry, Rapid City, SD, Jayne Jonasen and her husband, Mike, McCook, NE, Stuart Barns and his wife, Cindy, Mitchell, SD; a stepdaughter, Diana Klinghagen, Tulsa, OK; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Elder, Lincoln, NE, and Mary Beth Carson, Seattle, WA.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jay, on Sept. 3, 1977; her second husband, Albert, on Feb. 11, 1993; and a granddaughter, Amanda Barns.

Robert F. Hogarth

STURGIS — Robert F. Hogarth, 77, Sturgis, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Hogarth, Sturgis; one son, Randy Hogarth, Sioux Falls; one daughter, Kay Meyers, Laramie, Wyo.; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Vera F. Harris

BLACK HAWK — Vera F. Harris, 91, Black Hawk, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at a Rapid City nursing home.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Alma Van Ness

PIERRE — Alma Van Ness, 94, Pierre, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.

Survivors include two daughters, Lila Laham, Wichita, Kan., and Carol Eisenbraun, Tucson, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, today at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at Fort Pierre United Church of Christ. Burial will be at Scott Philip Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Fort Pierre Congregational United Church of Christ.

Irene H. Ressl

RAPID CITY — Irene Helen Ressl went with God on April 13, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

She was born May 9, 1916 to Emil Matt and Mary (Bren) Matt. Irene (Matt) married Frank R. Ressl on April 11, 1942, in Rapid City.

She loved teaching for the Meade County School System. She enjoyed rummage sales, babysitting, gardening and canning, baking, cooking, collecting cookbooks, rock hunting and collecting and going out to eat. Irene was always giving and a friend to all. She was a devoted mother, grandmother to all that knew her. She loved her sister dearly and her "special" friends, Boots the cat, Harriet Sowards, Shirley Wheelhouse, Ginny Tallman and Barb Horton.

She is survived by her daughters, Evelyn Yarrow and her husband Gene of Rapid City, Diana Clark and her husband Mike of Tacoma, WA; sister Marjy Mann of Rapid City; two granddaughters, Gina Hedstrom of Hot Springs and Rae Ann Egan of Elgin, TX; great-grandchildren, Stashia Yarrow, Marissa Hedstrom, R.J. Hedstrom, all of Hot Springs, SD; and her nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Frank Ressl.

Visitation will be from 4-7 pm on Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at Kirk Chapel of Light in Rapid City. Services will be held at Kirk Funeral Home at 10 am Wednesday, April 17, 2002, with Rev. Allen Bates officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, and a luncheon at Black Hawk Community Church.

A memorial has been established to Black Hawk Community Church.

Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred P. Grosz

RAPID CITY — Mildred P. Grosz, 84, Rapid City, died at a Rapid City nursing home Saturday, April 13, 2002.

She was born Feb. 13, 1918 at Mitchell, S. Dak., the daughter of George & Mary (Marion) Snell. She grew up in the Mitchell area and married Herbert E. Grosz Sept. 2, 1937 at Armour, S. Dak. The couple resided in Mitchell prior to moving to Rapid City in 1962. She was a member of South Canyon Lutheran Church for a number of years and was very active in Church activities.

Survivors include three Sons, Duane Grosz and his wife Kathy, Rapid City, Rodell Grosz, Rapid City and Gene Grosz and his wife Marnie, Denver, Colo.; two granddaughters, Michelle Tschetter, Denver, Colo. and Patti Harris, Santa Cruz, CA; a niece, Clo Ellen Trout, Black Hawk, S. Dak. and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989 and a daughter in infancy.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM today at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Services will be at 1:30 PM Tuesday at the South Canyon Lutheran Church with Rev. Layne Nelson and Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiating. Interment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery.

Donald E. Scott

RAPID CITY — Donald E. Scott, 68, Rapid City, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth L. Scott; one daughter, Diana Turner, Hot Springs; one son, Donald E. Scott II, Rapid City; four brothers, Orlo Scott, Monticello, Ind., Robert Scott and O. Richard Leis, both of Buffalo, Ind., and William Leis, Norway, Ind.; two sisters, Charolette Rater, Monon, Ind., and Linda Delk, Daleville, Ind.; and six grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Elmer Rosenboom

EDNA, Iowa — Elmer Rosenboom, 79, Edna, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids.

He served in the Navy Seabees from 1943 until 1946.

Survivors include two sons, Randy Rosenboom, Edna, and Ron Rosenboom, Sturgis, S.D.; three sisters, Helen Busse, Rock Rapids, Lorraine Hanson, Philip, S.D., and Mae Pfau, Albuquerque, N.M.; and three grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with family present from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, at Hope Reformed Church of George. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the church, with the Rev. David Vander Laan officiating. Burial will follow at Hope Reformed Cemetery.

Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
