Mildred O. 'Millie' Kirkeby

RAPID CITY - Mildred O. "Millie" Kirkeby, 83, Rapid City, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at a local nursing home.

Mildred Olivia Stevens was born on August 23, 1918, in McIntosh, S.D. She was the third daughter in a family of five children, the youngest child, the "golden girl." Her parents, John and Ida (Hulm) Stevens were immigrants from Sweden and Finland who homesteaded in North Dakota. Millie grew into young womanhood and was united in marriage to Hank Kirkeby in 1936. This endearing union produced four children.

At a young age Hank and Millie forsook the windswept Dakota prairie for life in the big city, Chicago, Ill. Millie always recalled those challenging years in Chicago with fondness. However, as the Great Depression came to an end, this young family returned to their Dakota roots and Hank resumed life as a cowboy, rancher and farmer. The family lived in Morristown and Timber Lake, where Hank was the "Standard Oil Man." Later, the family relocated to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Auburn, Washington, but the emotional ties to South Dakota were too strong and they returned to Rapid City and were welcomed into the expanding Kirkeby Enterprises founded by their eldest son, Ken, who assumed loving responsibility for his aging parents. Hank died in 1984 and Millie lived out her remaining years of widowhood surrounded by an extensive, loving family. She was the epitome of a loving and supporting wife, nurturing mother and grandmother. Millie suffered with enormous pain from arthritis for many years, but she radiated joy and compassion for others. Her passing creates an enormous void in the lives of her many friends and family. She was the glue that bonded the widely separated family members together and her example of genuine Christian principles are worthy goals for all of us to pattern our lives after.

Millie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hank Kirkeby; her sisters, Inez Kirkeby and Elsie Chilson; and her brothers, Nester Stevens and Ivers Stevens.

Survivors include her four children: son Ken Kirkeby, his wife Vicky, of Rapid City, S.D., son Larry Kirkeby, his wife Sue, of Haughton, Louisiana, son Lenny Kirkeby, his wife Carol, of La Canada, California, and daughter Susan Beebe, her husband Frank, of Voorhees, New Jersey; her 13 grandchildren: Randy Kirkeby, his wife Valarie, of Eagle River, Alaska, Beth Peiffer, her husband Ted, of Rapid City, S.D., Pam Carlyle, her husband Keith, of Rapid City, S.D., Mark Kirkeby, his wife Sheryl, of Rapid City, S.D., Lynette Kirkeby of Lead, S.D., Mike Kirkeby, his wife Rocky, of Rapid City, S.D., Sheree Kirkeby of Pacifica, Calif., Larry Don Kirkeby, his wife Gail, of Little Rock, Arkansas, Elizabeth Butler, her husband Barry, of Bossier City, Louisiana, Stephanie Halbert, her husband Darryl, of Dallas, Texas, Karl Kirkeby of San Diego, California, Konita Kirkeby of San Diego, California, and Kirsten Beebe of Voorhees, New Jersey; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
