Hugh Holwell

SUNDANCE, Wyo. - Hugh Holwell, 81, Sundance, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Crook County Memorial Hospital in Sundance.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Holwell, Sundance, and one brother, Gene Holwell, Newcastle, Wyo.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at Worden Chapel in Newcastle.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 15, at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Robert Firebaugh officiating.

Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newcastle.

Memorials may be made to Skull Creek Community Center or Sundance Ambulance.

Norma Scott Pattison

WICKENBURG, Ariz. - Norma Scott Pattison died March 29, 2002, at her home in Wickenburg, Ariz.

Norma Scott, the only child of Al and Gertrude Scott, was born February 19, 1928, in Hill City, and grew up in Rapid City, South Dakota.

After graduating from Rapid City High School in 1946, she attended the Barbizon School of Modeling in New York City, then went on to train as an airline stewardess.

She worked in the field for six years until her marriage to Bill Pattison on February 16, 1956, in Las Vegas, Nev. They lived in California and Idaho before locating in Wickenburg in 1987.

Norma is survived by her husband, Bill; three daughters, Linda, Lisa and Laurie; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services and burial were April 2, 2002, in Wickenburg.

Pauline Miles

ANDERSON, S.C. - Pauline Miles, 92, Anderson and formerly of Rapid City, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Hospice House of Anderson.

Survivors include one daughter, Juanita Watson, Liberty, S.C.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City.

Mildred A. Fink

BELLE FOURCHE - Mildred A. Fink, 95, Belle Fourche, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Lou Hespe, Belle Fourche; two sons, Glenn Fink, Yuma, Ariz., and Gary Fink, Bettendorf, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.

Lizzie Christine Bekken

BELLE FOURCHE - Lizzie Christine Bekken, 96, Belle Fourche and formerly of Newell and Zeona, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at the Belle Fourche Long Term Care Center.

Visitation will be Thursday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and Friday one hour prior to services at the church in Zeona.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 12, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Zeona. Burial follows at the Zeona Cemetery.

Lizzie was born March 31, 1906, at Mt. Vernon, S.D., to Osten Nelson and Anna Christine (Flugekvam) Orwick. She grew up in Butte County and attended the Ball country school. She later attended Spearfish Normal and received her teacher's certificate.

Lizzie married Donald Bekken at Lemmon, S.D., on March 16, 1934. The couple owned and operated a ranch south of Zeona for many years. Lizzie was a teacher for over 30 years in rural schools including the Opal School in Meade County, the Inland School District in Perkins County north of Bud Butte, the Sulphur school near Mud Butte, the Cottonwood School District at Fish Draw, and the Burke School.

Lizzie was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Zeona.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Nina Orwick, Spearfish, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son; her brothers, Oscar, Chris, Carl and Elmer; and her sisters, Clara, Lena, Nettie, Bertha and Ida.

A memorial has been established to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Zeona.

Hattie Kulm

AKASKA - Funeral services for Hattie Kulm, 84, of Akaska, South Dakota, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2002, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Akaska, the Rev. Michael Gorte officiating. Burial will be in the Akaska Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 11, 2002, from 4 p.m. until the conclusion of the prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Kesling Funeral Chapel in Mobridge and also one hour before the funeral service at the church in Akaska.

Hattie was born October 19, 1917, in Forsythe, Montana, to Phillip and Rosina (Harsch) Salzer. The family moved to a farm west of Pollock, South Dakota, where Hattie grew up and attended a country school. When she was 19 she moved to Selby and worked at Lakeman's Cafe and Hotel. Hattie met Albert Kulm in 1937 and continued to work for Lakeman's until she was united in marriage to Albert on October 18, 1938, in Herreid, S.D. After her marriage the couple lived on their farm north of Akaska that is now run by one of their sons. Hattie was active in the operation of the farm and also was active in her church, Zion Lutheran in Akaska, along with the church Ladies Aid and the extension club.

Hattie and Albert retired from farming in 1992 and enjoyed many winters together in Apache Junction, Arizona. In 1995 the couple returned to South Dakota after selling their Arizona home and chose to winter in South Dakota.

On December 8, 1998, Albert passed away and Hattie continued to live on their farm, where she was currently residing at the time of her death.

Hattie enjoyed flowers, reading, traveling and spending time with her sons and grandchildren.

Hattie is survived by four sons, Darrell (Julia) of Rapid City, S.D., Wayne (Virginia) of Princeton, Indiana, Loren (Judith) of Akaska, and Keith of Princeton, Indiana; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Albert in 1998, her parents and two sisters.

Casket bearers will be Bryce Kulm, Thomas Kulm, Steve Mead, Von Ackerman, Jon Ackerman and Dan Hagel.

The organist will be Marie Starks. Congregational hymns will be "I Know My Redeemer Lives" and "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."

Charles H. 'Sarge' Mortensen

GILLETTE, Wyo. - Charles H. "Sarge" Mortensen, 77, Gillette and formerly of Rapid City, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Hospital in Sturgis, S.D.

Survivors include his wife, Delores Mortensen, Gillette; three daughters, Vicki Ware and Wendy Burch, both of Norfolk, Va., and Gail Korfiatis, Sherman, Texas; four stepdaughters, Rhonda Greenwaldt, Angel Philbrick, Audra Philbrick and Renee Champange; three stepsons, Gilbert Reif, Todd Champange and Chuckie Champange; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and 16 step-grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1971.

Visitation with family present was held Tuesday, April 9, at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home in Gillette.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the Rev. Martin Crump officiating.

Burial, with full military honors by American Legion Post No. 42, will follow at Mount Pisgah Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to American Legion Post 42 Drill Team.

Geraldine Ann Schiefer

RAPID CITY - Geraldine Ann Schiefer, 61, Rapid City, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at a Rapid City nursing home.

Survivors include one son, Ricky Schiefer, Spearfish; four daughters, Debbie Adams, Palmdale, Calif., Crystal Boyd, Fort Collins, Colo., Patricia Dela Cruz, Rapid City, and Jennifer Schiefer, Spearfish; her mother, Florence Bauer, Rapid City; two brothers, Ben Bauer, Rapid City, and Walt Bauer, Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Roberta Freeman, Sturgis, and Doris Ward, Deadwood; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 11, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Deadwood.

Joseph Henry Schneider

WHITEWOOD - Joseph Henry Schneider, 85,

Whitewood, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical

Center in Sturgis.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet Schneider, Whitewood; five sons, Roger Schneider, St. Onge, Henry Schneider, Spearfish, Leo Schneider, Lincoln, N.D., Dennis Schneider, Mitchell, and Marshall Schneider, New Salem, N.D.; three daughters, Barbara Schneider and June Schneider, both of Rapid City, and Diane Jordan, Sturgis; two brothers, Pete Schneider, Ohio, and John Schneider, Dickinson, N.D.; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be for one hour before services Friday, April 12, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Friends may gather at the funeral chapel before leaving for the cemetery.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with Mr. Randy McCormick officiating.

Mildred Sandal

PIERRE - Mildred Sandal, 98, Pierre and formerly of Hayes, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.

Survivors include two sons, Morris Sandal, Rapid City, and Don Sandal, Fort Pierre; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 19 stepgreat-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Art Sandal, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 11, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. CDT Friday, April 12, at Deep Creek Lutheran Church in Hayes.

Burial will follow at Deep Creek Cemetery in Hayes.

Feigum Funeral Home of Pierre is in charge of arrangements.

Ben Brozik

WINNER - Ben Brozik, 78, Winner, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at his home.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. rosary, at Mason Funeral Home in Winner.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 11, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner.

Burial will be at Winner Cemetery.

Gertie Martha Wallin

SPEARFISH - Gertie M. Wallin, 76, Spearfish, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Survivors include four sons, Keith Wallin, Belle Fourche, Randy Wallin, Sturgis, and Mike Wallin and Chuck Wallin, both of Deadwood; three daughters, Karen Ward, Hysham, Mont., Mary Wallin, Deadwood, and Marlene Selman, Lakewood, Colo.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Richard Ervin Wallin, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 11, and from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 12, at Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish, and for one hour before services Friday at Hillsview Church of the Nazarene in Spearfish.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Bill Boehm officiating.

Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Deadwood.

Arlie Mae Webb Stolley

PIERRE - Arlie Mae Webb Stolley, 83, Pierre, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.

Survivors include seven children, Merle Rada, Coos Bay, Ore., JoAnn Karsteller, Townsend, Mont., Diane Koch, Woodbridge, Va., Pat Elrod and Judy Rada, both of Murdo, and Jerry Rada and Ken Stolley, both of Pierre; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Alice Tornow, Collegedale, Tenn.

Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Murdo City Cemetery.
