Vincent K. Derscheid

RAPID CITY - Vincent Kenwood Derscheid, 87, died March 29, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Vince was born July 18, 1914, on the Beadle County, S.D., farm of his parents, George and Ida Anderson Derscheid. As a young child he moved to a farm in Omro, Wis., with his divorced mother and brother, Lowell.

After graduating from high school at 16, he "hired out" to farmers for a couple of years until he could scrape together enough money to enter Wisconsin State Teachers College at Oshkosh (now University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh). He graduated in 1936 with a Bachelor of Education degree.

He taught high school and coached basketball and boxing in Bancroft, S.D., and Tomahawk, Wis., for five years and then worked for Wasau Insurance in Kansas City. Prior to enlisting in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II, he was married and had two children, Carol and Gordon. Vince and his wife divorced prior to the war's end.

He served as an ensign aboard PT boat 375 in Squadron 27, seeing action off the coast of Balikpapan, Borneo. His Navy experiences were a highlight of his life.

Before separation from the service he was sent to duty in Washington, D.C. where he met Carolyn Bludorn, a Navy WAVE lieutenant, whom he married in September 1946.

The couple moved to Madison, Wis., where Vince received his Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting in 1948 from the University of Wisconsin.

Vince and Carolyn then settled in Appleton, Wis., where they raised three children, Eric, Christine and Julie. He received his Certified Public Accountant certificate and pursued an accounting career. He co-founded the Schenck, Derscheid, Kuenzli & Sturtevant accounting firm now known as Schenck & Associates. He loved his profession and was very active in the Wisconsin Institute of CPA's, serving on many committees and as president in 1979-80. He also chaired a committee of the American Institute of CPA's.

Vince was vitally interested in the education of young people and was happy to establish two foundations that continue to grant scholarships to graduates of Omro High school and Wisconsin college students pursuing accounting degrees. He served as a Little League manager and as skipper of the Sea Explorer Ship Northern Light.

Vince enjoyed skiing at dozens of ski resorts in America, and was the proud possessor of gold NASTAR medals for downhill. He was an avid outdoorsman who had successfully hunted and fished throughout the Midwest, western United States, Canada, Alaska and the Bahamas. He and Carolyn enjoyed traveling

nationally and internationally, and he was proud of having visited all 50 states. He was a 50-year member of the Wisconsin Institute of CPA's and a life member of both the National Rifle Association and Optimist International.

Following retirement in 1980, Vince and Carolyn moved to Rapid City, where he participated in the Canyon Lake Senior Citizens Center, the Noon Optimist Club, the 7th Cavalry Drum and Bugle Corps and the Shrine of Democracy Chorus. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Rapid City Club for Boys. He suffered strokes in 1982 and 1995 and fought back courageously against these misfortunes.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Derscheid of Rapid City; children Carol Farnum (Dan), Aurora, Ill., Gordon, Pahrump, Nev., Eric, Seattle, Wash., Christine McKelvie (Bill) Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Julie Claire, New York, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Royal Tice, Omro, Wis. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

His family will conduct a memorial service on May 17, 2002, at Behrens Mortuary before proceeding to Black Hills National Cemetery, where he will be buried with full military honors.

Memorials to either the Rapid City Club for Boys, 320 N. 4th St., Rapid City, SD 57701 or Canyon Lake Senior Citizens Center, 2900 Canyon Lake Drive, Rapid City, SD 57702, would be sincerely appreciated.
