Wendlin E. Binfet

STURGIS - Wendlin E. Binfet, 73, Sturgis, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Binfet, Sturgis; one son, Michael Binfet, Bellefontaine, Ohio; one daughter, Julie Oeschger, Cascade, Iowa; one brother, Clem Binfet, Ipswich; three sisters, Josephine Tuscherer and Mary Molsom, both of Onaka, and Angeline Ryman, Redfield; and two granddaughters.

A Scriptural wake service will be at 7 p.m. Monday, April 1, at Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Gary Oreshoski as celebrant. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.

Memorials may be given to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church or the Meade County Senior Citizens Center in Sturgis.

Judith Kay Cleveland-Greenwalt-Larson

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Judith Kay Cleveland-Greenwalt-Larson went home on March 20, 2002.

She was born on November 14, 1940, in Chicago, Ill., to Sanford and Miriam Cleveland. She attended schools in South Dakota and Arizona.

Survivors include her three children, Cyndi of Jackpot, Nev., Tony and his wife, Anita, of El Reno, Okla., and Laura of Portland, Ore.; brothers Paul and David; sisters Elizabeth and Jane; nine grandchildren, Christina, Paul, Jason, Nicki, Emily, Sarah, Joshua Todd, Joshua Keith and Megan; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Lois.

Judy will be best remembered for her dedication to her family and compassion for others.

A memorial service will be held in San Diego on April 21, 2002.

LaVerne A. Mead

RAPID CITY - LaVerne A. Mead, 76, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at a Rapid City nursing home.

She was born March 28, 1926, at Lincoln, Neb., the daughter of Charles and Florence (Pickins) Griffin. She grew up and went to high school in Lincoln. LaVerne married Rollin D. Mead on Oct. 23, 1947, at Lincoln. The family moved to Rapid City in 1956. She worked for many years in dental hygiene, and as a salesperson at Bette's of Baken Park and at Blumenthals. LaVerne was an avid golfer and gardener. She was a member of the First Congregational Church where she enjoyed her Circle and camaraderie of friends.

Survivors include two children, Becky Sargeant and Griff Mead, both of Rapid City; a sister, Marjorie James, Chaparal, Texas; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, at the First Congregational Church, with Rev. Susan Huffman officiating.

Interment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Jean Maxwell

PIERRE - Jean Maxwell, 85, Pierre, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at Pierre.

Arrangements are pending with Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapels in Pierre.

Adele A. Hellesund

PHILIP - Adele A. Hellesund, 84, Philip and formerly of St. Onge, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Heltzel, Philip; one brother, Allen Tetrault, St. Onge; two grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin G. Hellesund.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, April 1, at Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, at United Church of Christ in St. Onge, with the Rev. Buck Malone officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery in St. Onge.

A memorial has been established for the St. Onge United Church of Christ.

Lyle Edstrom

HOT SPRINGS - Lyle Edstrom, 83, Hot Springs, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at his home.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Harrison, Fort Yates, and Mary Raymer, Slidell, La.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be one hour before services, which will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 1, at Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Raymond Adams officiating. Interment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors by Sturgis Honor Guard.

Ardys Swinson

PRESHO - Ardys Swinson, 78, Presho, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Pierre.

Arrangements are pending with Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapels in Pierre.

Clarence E. Kimball

RAPID CITY - Clarence E. Kimball passed away Friday, March 29, 2002, at his home after a lengthy

battle with emphysema. He was born February 27, 1920, in Hot Springs, South Dakota.

He grew up in Fairburn, South Dakota, and attended 12 grades of Fairburn Public School. Clarence worked for his grandfather, C.B. Smith, for two years on the ranch and in the family store. He attended the Lincoln Flying School in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1940-41. The Army Air Corps hired him to work at Patterson Army Air Corps Base at Patterson, Ohio, as an airplane mechanic servicing transit aircraft. When World War II broke out in December 1941, he volunteered for duty at Hickam Field in Hawaii, where he served for two years. During this time, he also made a 3-week trip to Canton Island in the Pacific, where he assembled P-39 Fighter Planes. After the two years duty in the Pacific, Clarence returned to Patterson Field in Ohio.

During a leave of absence from Patterson Field, Clarence married Doris M. Trosper in Chadron, Nebraska, on November 20, 1943. They moved to Rapid City after their wedding and he was drafted by the Navy two months later. After Basic Training in Idaho, he was assigned to Norman, Oklahoma, where he taught various repairs of airplanes. After discharge in 1947, he returned to Rapid City, where he worked at Ellsworth Air Force Base on B-29, B-36 and B-52 Bomber aircraft; he also worked on the Titan Missiles. He was the "last civilian" connected with this program when it was updated to become the Minuteman missile program for the next four years. Clarence took an early retirement from Civil Service in the early 1970s and enjoyed hunting, fishing and model railroading.

Clarence is survived by his wife Doris; daughters Kathy J. Pfeiffer and Nancy J. Harper; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2002, at Behrens Mortuary, 632 St. Francis St. in Rapid City, South Dakota, Pastor Bruce Thalacker presiding. Viewing will be prior to the service. Burial will be at the Fairburn Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Fairburn Volunteer Fire Department in Fairburn, South Dakota.

Salome Yvonne Walking Bull Dodd

BELLEVILLE, Ill. - Salome Yvonne Walking Bull Dodd, 56, Belleville, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville.

Survivors include one sister, Wanda Walking Bull, Washington Park, Ill.

Arrangements are pending with Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, S.D.

Maynard Lavern 'Jim' Long

WINNER - Maynard Lavern "Jim" Long, 76, Winner, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Winner Regional Healthcare Center.

Survivors include his wife, Jennie Long, Winner; two daughters, Anita Schow, Provo, Utah, and Marla Liggett, Winner; one son, Lauren Long, Salem; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Alvin Long; and one sister, Verlene Kaiser.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from March 6, 1943, to July 23, 1946.

Visitation was Friday, March 29, at Mason Funeral Home in Winner.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Episcopal Church in Winner.

Burial will be at Winner Cemetery.

Barbara Ahonen Perrin

BRISBANE, Australia - Funeral services for Barbara Ahonen Perrin, age 56, of Brisbane, Australia, formerly of Newell, will be Monday, April 1, 2002 at 1 p.m. at the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis, with Rev. Moe Griener officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home beginning at 9 a.m. Monday until the time of the services. Memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association.

Mrs. Perrin died on Saturday, March 23, 2002, in Brisbane, Australia.

Barbara Ahonen was born December 11, 1945, in Rapid City, S.D., to parents Leo and Violette (Laumer) Ahonen. She grew up in Newell, S.D., on the family ranch. Barbara graduated from Newell High School and went to junior college in San Mateo, Calif. On September 30, 1978, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Perrin in Spearfish. Barbara loved to travel; she and Lloyd have made their home in the San Francisco Bay area, Casper, Wyo.; Aurora, Colo.; Allen, Texas; as well as South Africa and Australia. They had also loved France, Italy, Germany, Finland, Russia, Hong Kong, Tahiti, Hawaii, Tasmania, New Zealand, China, Denmark, Switzerland, Fiji, Zimbabwe and the Netherlands. Barbara had developed friendships worldwide and kept in contact with many over the years. Because of a donor family's love and generosity, Barbara had been a recipient of a lung transplant in July 1998.

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Perrin of Brisbane, Australia; her father, Leo Ahonen of Newell; sisters, Beverly and David Winkler of Newell, Elaine and Lincoln Ainsworth of Piedmont, Susan and Dan Bulleit of New Albany, Ind., and Janette Ahonen of Aurora, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews and a great-niece. She was preceded in death by her mother.

Arrangements are with the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis.

Lyle 'Gene' Edstrom

HOT SPRINGS - Lyle "Gene" Edstrom, 83, Hot Springs, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Harrison, Fort Yates, N.D., and Mary Raymer, Slidell, La.

Arrangements are pending with Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Chapel of Rapid City.

Donald 'Don' Nelson

SPEARFISH - Donald "Don" Nelson, 80, Spearfish and formerly of Mobridge, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at his home.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 31, with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, at Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge and for one hour before services Monday, April 1, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mobridge.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Brian Simon officiating.

Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Mobridge.

Warren S. Pearson

KADOKA - Warren S. Pearson, 92, Kadoka, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at Kadoka Care Center.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Boyer, Aberdeen, and Peggy Joseph, Marathon, Fla.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Dwight Pearson, Derby, Iowa.

His wife, Mae Flora Kukal Pearson, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, at Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 4, at Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with the Rev. Gary McCubbin officiating.

Burial will be at Kadoka Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Kadoka Ambulance.
