STURGIS - Wendlin E. Binfet, 73, Sturgis, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Binfet, Sturgis; one son, Michael Binfet, Bellefontaine, Ohio; and one daughter,

Julie Oeschger, Cascade, Iowa.

Arrangements are pending with Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Sturgis.

Glenn R. Ekstrom

OAKDALE, Calif. - Glenn R. Ekstrom, 84, Oakdale and formerly of Black Hawk, S.D., died Friday, March 15, 2002, at Oak Valley Hospital in Oakdale.

Survivors include his wife, Mazo Ekstrom, Oakdale; one brother, Lyle Ekstrom, Arizona; seven children, Alvin Ekstrom, New Mexico, Glenda Carlson, Jay Ekstrom and Robin Ekstrom, all of West Sacramento, Calif., Dena Edwards and Ramona Hirsch, both of Rapid City, and Dani Anderson, Huron, S.D.; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Services were private. Burial was in Washburn, N.D.

Oakdale Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Marlys Ann Cooley

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Marlys Ann Cooley departed this life on March 27, 2002. Memorial services are to be held at 2 p.m. on April 1 at the United Church of Faulkton in Faulkton, South Dakota.

Marlys was born February 20, 1948, to Ralph and Nina (Reed) Herman in Faulkton, S.D., where she grew to young adulthood. On September 18, 1964, she married Jim Roethler in Lawton, Oklahoma. Together in union they had a daughter, Trisha Ann. The three of them led an Army life for the next 18 years, living in Lawton, Oklahoma; twice in Germany; Rapid City, South Dakota; and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Marlys Ann moved to Rapid City, S.D., where she married Colvin "Spade" Cooley on October 10, 1984. They spent their retirement years there and had their family visit often. As they enjoyed travel, they also

frequently visited relatives. In September 1998 they moved to Colorado Springs to live with her daughter and family, Trish, Dave and John. She lost her husband on March 7, 2002.

Marlys suffered from Crohns for 35 years but never let her health get the best of her. She always thought of others, always remembering birthdays, anniversaries or a friend in need, always offering comfort. Her hobbies were needlepoint and cooking, which she enjoyed sharing with others.

Surviving her are her daughters, Tricia Meek, Theresa Meyer and Alberta Elsasser, and sons, Dale, Joseph and Chris Cooley. She had seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her mother, Nina Herman; a sister, Cherry Frasier; and three brothers, Gene, Gale and Glen Herman.

She joins in heaven her husband Spade, father Ralph, an infant brother, and an infant sister.

Vincent K. Derscheid

RAPID CITY - Vincent K. Derscheid, 87, Rapid City, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.

Betty Carol Sever

RAPID CITY — Betty Carol Sever, 63, Rapid City, died at the Rapid City Regional Hospital Tuesday, March 26, 2002.

Betty was born November 4, 1938, in Paris, Tennessee, to Floyd and Roxona (Mobley) Baker. She was raised in Hereford, S.D., and graduated from Sturgis High School in 1956. She continued her education in the accounting field, becoming a certified tax preparer and licensed investment counselor.

Betty was united in marriage to Milo Sever on July 21, 1956. They made their home in Rapid City, S.D.

Betty touched a lot of lives during her 30 years of business. She took pride in her work, knowing she made a positive difference for her clients. She was proud of her rural upbringing, which fostered a love of animals, especially horses. She also held dear her 30-year association with women's sorority. She was happiest helping others in need, but her greatest joy by far was her grandkids.

Life's lessons learned from Betty are to be quick to smile and laugh, slow to tear, take time with your family and friends, care for your community, and love your country.

Grateful for having shared her life is her husband, Milo Sever, Rapid City, S.D.; two sons and their wives, Jeffrey and Laura Sever, Rapid City, S.D., and Mark and Decima Sever, Scottsdale, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Tyler, Trent, Taryn, arena and Braeden; two brothers, Elroy Baker, Wecota, S.D., and Raymond Baker, Hereford, S.D.; two sisters, Beatrice Johnson, Hill City, S.D., and Mary Birdwell, Rapid City, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Florence Hemenway.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, with Deacon Virginia Bird officiating.

Interment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Barbara Ahonen Perrin

BRISBANE, Australia — Barbara Ahonen Perrin, 56, Brisbane and formerly of Newell, S.D., died Friday, March 22, 2002, in Brisbane.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Perrin, Brisbane; her father, Leo Ahonen, Newell; and four sisters, Beverly Winkler, Newell, Elaine Ainsworth, Piedmont, S.D., Susan Bulleit, New Albany, Ind., and Janette Ahonen, Aurora, Colo.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 1, at Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis, S.D.

Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Vora Jane Hurley

RAPID CITY — Vora Jane Hurley, 86, Rapid City, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

She was born on October 17, 1915, at Spearfish, S.D., the daughter of William Walter and Lillian (Waters) Driskill. During her adolescent years she lived in California, Florida and Wyoming before returning to South Dakota. She moved to Rapid City and graduated from Coolidge High School in 1933. She was employed as a secretary at Western Wholesale Liquor Co. in Rapid City, where she met her husband. Jane married M.S. "Prunes" Hurley on July 12, 1946. She loved her family and was especially proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Jeanette Moore and her husband Ron, Marshall, Minn., and their son Steve and his wife Holly, and their three children, Madeline, Andrew and Isaac, and Kathleen Vaughn and her son Nick Willan of Rapid City, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Arthea Gikling Sundstrom; and a granddaughter, Laura Moore.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Monday until service time at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. William C. Hibbert officiating.

Interment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the S.D. Association of the Blind.

Rebecca ‘Grandma' Dvorak

RIVERTON, Wyo. — Rebecca "Grandma" Dvorak, 85, Riverton, Wyo., formerly of Rapid City, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Wind River Health Care in Riverton, Wyo.

She was born June 25, 1916, in Rapid City, S.D., to Carl Behrens and Inez (Jones) Behrens. She was raised in Rapid City, S.D., in a large pioneer business and ranching family. Rebecca was educated in Rapid City public schools. She was among the first women to attend South Dakota School of Mines and Technology at Rapid City. She lived in numerous places around the country, where her husband was stationed during his military service and with his employment with the Soil Conservation Service and later the U.S.B.R.

She moved to Casper, Wyo., in 1947, where she raised her family. After her husband's retirement in 1974, she moved to Custer, S.D.; she remained there until 1991, when Rebecca and her husband returned to Casper and then Riverton to be near her children.

She was very active in First Baptist Church at Casper. She was Sunday school teacher, organist and pianist for youth choir at First Baptist Church, Casper, Wyo., and Messengers young adult group facilitator at First Baptist Church, Casper, Wyo. She was also very active in the Casper antique club and doll club; after retirement, she was active in the Christian Women's clubs at Custer, S.D., and Casper, Wyo. She was very active in PTA when the children were in school; "room mother" for years; den mother and other scouting activities. She was involved in the Casper, Wyo., Antique collectors club and doll collectors guild.

For many years during her teens and young adulthood she played organ or piano for services at her family's mortuary, Behrens Funeral Home, Rapid City, S.D.

She was an excellent seamstress who made most of her children's school clothes; sewed special occasion dresses for her grandchildren; collected antiques, especially crystal balls, glass kerosene lamps (100's); had 17 antique china cupboards, many music boxes; collected tea cups and always had a piano or organ; loved holiday decorating, especially Christmas.

She is survived by her son, Peter Dvorak of Riverton, Wyo.; one daughter, Judith M. Gillum of Casper, Wyo.; one brother, Jack Behrens of Mission Viejo, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Inez Behrens, Rapid City; brothers, Harry and George Behrens, Rapid City; her husband, Frank Dvorak, Casper, Wyo.; and son-in-law, Carl Gillum, Casper, Wyo.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 1, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Behrens Mortuary.

Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.

Maude Novella Carter

MILLER — Maude Novella Carter, 105, Miller and formerly of St. Lawrence, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller.

Survivors include six daughters, Leone Liebers, Winter, Wis., Dorothy Marshall and Evelyn Fanning, both of St. Lawrence, Lois Harris, Jonesville, N.C., Rachel Rediger, Mesa, Ariz., and Dixie Young, Edmonds, Wash.; three sons, James Carter, Rapid City, Roger Carter, Greensboro, N.C., and Dale Carter, Montrose, Colo.; and at least 250 descendants.

Her husband, James A. Carter, preceded her in death.

Services will be Tuesday, April 2, at St. Lawrence Community Church, with the Rev. Richard Ransom and the Rev. Ron Burkhalter officiating.

Burial will be at St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Robert Clarence Week

PRAIRIE CITY — Robert Clarence Week, 90, Prairie City, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Hillcrest Care Center in Hettinger, N.D.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Week, Prairie City; one daughter, Doris Crites, Otterbein, Ind.; three sons, David Week, Priest River, Idaho, Glenn Week, Leavenworth, Wash., and Ted Week, Prairie City; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Doris Peck, Sturgis.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon and for one hour before services Saturday, March 30, at Beckman Memorial Wesleyan Church in Prairie City.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Brad Burkhalter officiating.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hettinger Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Irvin C. Kringen

CUSTER — Irvin C. Kringen, 86, Custer and formerly of Aberdeen, died Monday, March 25, 2002.

Survivors include his wife Irene Kringen, Custer; two daughters, Charlene Larsen, Custer, and Debra Martin, Spring Branch, Texas; two grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Dahme and Harriet Heupel, both of Aberdeen; and three brothers, Maurice Kringen and Wallace Kringen, both of Bowman, N.D., and Harris Kringen, Spearfish.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until service time Saturday, March 30, at Miller-Huebl Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Harold Salem officiating.

Burial will be at Memorial Park in Aberdeen.

Kenneth O. Sisson

KETTERING, Ohio — Kenneth O. Sisson, 87, Kettering and formerly of Crook County, Wyo., and Belle Fourche, S.D., died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Oak Creek Terrace Nursing Center in Kettering.

Survivors include two sons, Leslie Sisson, Centerville, Ohio, and John Sisson, Greenville, S.C.; one daughter, Carole Mantey, Hinsdale, Ill.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Cecil Sisson, Painesville, Ohio, William Sisson, Belle Fourche, and Paul Sisson, Yucca Valley, Calif.; and one sister, Phyllis Eixenberger, Belle Fourche.

His wife, Geraldine Bailey Sisson, preceded him in death.

Routsong Funeral Home of Dayton, Ohio, is in charge of arrangements.

Esther C. Poshusta

RAPID CITY- Esther C. Poshusta, 97, of Rapid City died Monday, March 25, 2002, at a local nursing home.

She is survived by two nieces, Avanelle Pfenning and Candace Lancaster, both of Rapid City, and three nephews, Warren Pfenning of Rapid City, Bob Hede of Casper, Wyo., and Virgil Miller of Seattle, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two sisters.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 27, 2002, from noon until 4 p.m. at Kirk Chapel of Light in Rapid City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2002, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City, with Monsignor Michael Wooster as celebrant. Burial will follow at New Underwood Cemetery in New Underwood.

Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.
