Vera Cleveland

GILLETTE, Wyo. - Vera Cleveland, 84, Gillette, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include two sons, Tim Cleveland, Belle Fourche, S.D., and Tom Cleveland, Wayzata, Minn.; one daughter, Colette Haluzak, Gillette; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Her husband, Thomas Cleveland Sr., preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in Gillette.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday,March 28, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D., with a military chaplain officiating.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice and sent in care of Wilson Funeral Home, 210 W. Fifth St., Gillette, WY 82716.

Alvena M. FitzHenry

NEWNAN, Ga. - Alvena M. FitzHenry, 79, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at Emory University Hospital in Newnan, Georgia.

Born January 4, 1923, in Round Lake, Minn., she was a founding member and longtime resident of the city of Box Elder, S.D. Throughout her life she was involved in community projects, including annual Founders Day celebrations and clean-up efforts after the Flood of 1972. She worked in the area as a cook and caregiver.

Surviving are a son and his wife, Michael and Trudy FitzHenry of Newnan, Ga.; daughter, Mary Sears of McCanna, N.D.; brother, Carl Manitz of Round Lake, Minn.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial luncheon will be held at Box Elder City Hall on Saturday, March 30, at 1 p.m.

Roger Thomas Gamo

SIOUX FALLS - Roger Thomas Gamo, age 62, of 2812 W. Costello, Sioux Falls, passed away Monday, March 25, 2002, at his residence.

Roger was born November 27, 1939, the son of Douglas and Emma (Whitlock) Gamo, at Old Bridge, N.J. He grew up in Sparrowbush, N.Y., graduating from high school in Port Jervis, N.Y., in 1958. He continued his education at Dakota Wesleyan.

On September 11, 1960, he was united in marriage to Virginia Lee Metz at Miranda, S.D. The family lived in Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota. An entrepreneur, he owned and operated many restaurants in various states, including the Wrangler Drive Inn at Custer, S.D.

Blessed with an outgoing personality, he loved visiting with people. He could always find things in common with whomever he was visiting with and always saw the good in people. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed fishing in the Black Hills, Canada and Minnesota. He loved the outdoors and spent time both deer and pheasant hunting.

Roger unconditionally loved everyone. He always looked on the bright side of life and was willing to help anyone in a time of need. He had a natural way of rescuing people from struggles.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Virginia, Sioux Falls, S.D.; one son, Roger "Scott" Gamo and his wife Paige, Twin Falls, Idaho; two daughters, Barbara Antal and her husband Richard, Lampasas, Texas, and Kris Lutzwick and special friend Clay Rees, Sioux Falls, S.D.; three grandchildren, Brandon and Nicholas Antal and Taran Lutzwick; his mother, Emma Gamo, Port Jervis, N.Y.; one sister, Jane Husson, Sparrowbush, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Douglas.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Friday at Miller Funeral Home Valley View Chapel in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday with the family present 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Miller Funeral Home Valley View Chapel.

Gary Cooper

WHITEWOOD - Gary Cooper, 61, Whitewood, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Deanna Cooper, Whitewood; two daughters, Shelly Buchholz and Tracy Cooper, both of Lead; one son, Dean Cooper, Aberdeen; four stepchildren, Melany French, Sutherland, Neb., Britt Strickland, Lead, Darrin Strickland, Twin Falls, Idaho, and Leeyn Strickland, Whitewood; one sister, Mary Daniels, Deadwood; 20 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 28, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead, with the Rev. William Zandri officiating.

Burial will follow at Mountain Lawn Cemetery in Lead.

Lille J. Crandal

RAPID CITY — Lille J. Crandall, 84, Rapid City, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include six children, Mick Crandall, Centerville, Utah, Pat Gower, Albuquerque, N.M., Jim Crandall and Kay Crandall, both of Rapid City, Charyl Skates, Bozeman, Mont., and Clay Crandall, Council Bluffs, Iowa; one sister, Celestia Rees, Odessa, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis "Mick" Crandall in 1987, a World War II veteran as well as Lille.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home's Chapel of Light. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Frances Bessie Leberknight

RAPID CITY — Frances Bessie Leberknight, 93, died Sunday, March 23, 2002, at a local nursing home in Rapid City.

She was born April 10, 1908, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, to Arthur John and Bessie (Tierney) Engel.

On May 22, 1929, she married Floyd Leberknight at DeSmet, S.D. They made their home near Brookings, S.D., until they came with their family to the Black Hills in 1935. In their early years in the hills, Frances was active in having a new school built for the children of the area. She named it "Whispering Pines School." Though the school is closed the name lives on in the area. Frances loved the quiet of the home she shared with her husband and daughters. She enjoyed playing the piano, walks in the woods, bird watching, word games and brought an appreciation of good music to her children.

She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Graham of Custer, Jean and her husband Paul Jantz of Rapid City; two brothers, Curtis Engel of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Marshall Engel of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Leberknight, in 1997.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, at the Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Home in Rapid City, with Pastor Tim Coats officiating. A visitation will be held one hour before the service. Burial will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Phyllis J. Gerken

RAPID CITY — Phyllis J. Gerken, 76, of Rapid City, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at her home.

She was born Feb. 5, 1926, in Viborg, S.D., to Peter and Lilian (Midland) Peterson. She lived with her family in Viborg until graduation from high school. Phyllis then moved to Seattle, Wash., where she worked for the Boeing Company.

In the spring of 1947, she married Jack A. Gerken. They lived in Minnesota and South Dakota, were blessed with six children and just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

She worked for 27 seasons at Reptile Gardens at the front ticket counter and gift shop. There she enjoyed greeting and talking to the guests from all over the world. The governor honored her with a citation for her special work with the public.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Jack A. Gerken of Rapid City; son John C. Gerken, Rapid City, daughter Gayla Goldsmith of Los Angeles, Calif., daughter Jacklyn J. Williams of Malibu, Calif., son Daniel P. Gerken of Lake Arrowhead, Calif., daughter Jana J. Fields of Oak Park, Calif., and son Michael M. Gerken of Valley Glen, Calif. She is also survived by four sisters, Bertha Bogard of Orange County, Calif., Naomi Flyger of Viborg, Elma Helgager of West Hills, Calif., and Evelyn Van Gorkom of Rapid City; a brother Duane Peterson of Viborg; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Myrtle Olson and Bernadine Peterson; and one brother, Wesley Peterson.

Phyllis was a wonderful, caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She added so much joy and fun to everyone's life. She was so full of energy and spunk and there was nothing she couldn't do. She had such a love for people and an interest in everyone. She will be greatly missed.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 25, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City, with Pastor Darrell Wagner officiating. A private family interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.

A memorial has been established for cancer research.

Jewell Hale

BOULDER, Colo. — Jewell Hale, 79, Boulder and formerly of Rapid City, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Boulder.

She is survived by her husband, Norman Hale, Boulder; three sons, Doug Hale, Alexandria, Va., Gregory Hale, Tempe, Ariz., and Lindsay Hale, Austin, Texas; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, at the Interment Service Center at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis is in charge of local arrangements.

Mary B. ‘Bonnie' Rock

KADOKA — Mass of Christian Burial for Mary B. "Bonnie" Rock, age 81, of Rapid City and formerly of Kadoka, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka.

Mary died early Sunday morning, March 24, 2002, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital after a brief bout with cancer.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a vigil service scheduled for 7 p.m., on Tuesday, March 26, all at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka.

Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.

A memorial is established to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka.

Mary B. "Bonnie" Goodnight was born Oct. 10, 1920, at Kit Carson, Colo., the daughter of James E. and Mary E. (O'Keefe) Goodnight. She grew up in Colorado and attended parochial school in Kit Carson and Cheyenne Wells. After graduation from high school, she worked as a secretary at Chevrolet Motors in Denver.

Bonnie was united in marriage to Kenneth Paul Rock in 1943. They began their married life in Florida where Ken was serving as a Captain and pilot in the U.S. Air Force. They later moved to Denver, Colo., then to Kadoka, S.D., where they settled and raised their family.

Bonnie and Ken owned and operated Rock Insurance Agency for many years. After Ken's death in 1968, Bonnie continued to operate the insurance agency until she sold it to Bank West in 1979. She continued to work as an insurance agent for Bank West until her retirement.

In 2001, Bonnie moved to Rapid City, S.D., where she lived until her death.

She was an active member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church and Altar Society in Kadoka until moving to Rapid City where she became a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Bonnie will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, quick wit, infectious laugh, sparkling green Irish eyes, feisty temperament, her kindness, and her deep faith in God.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her eight children, Paula (Conrad) Vogelgesang of Wanblee, S.D., Terry (Claire) Rock, Pat Rock, Mary Ellen Rock, all of Dallas, Texas, Jayne (Steve) Rock Gilbertson of Minneapolis, Minn., Jim (Kathy) Rock of Longvalley, S.D., Kris Rock (Randy Connelly) of Rapid City, S.D., and Linda (Tim) Thomas of Rapid City, S.D. In addition to her children, Bonnie is survived by 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Kenneth Rock, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Deborah Ann Rock; her parents; and four sisters, Helen McKown, Hazel MacGinnis, Evelyn Stroup and Retha Goodnight.

Paul Brownlow

RAPID CITY — Paul Brownlow, 51, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Deerfield Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Brownlow, Hoffman, Minn.; his mother, Hazel Nighbert, Glendale, Ariz.; four children, Paul J. Brownlow, Elbow Lake, Minn., Sherry Brownlow and Andy Brownlow, both of Hoffman, Steven P. Brownlow, Rapid City; five brothers and sisters, Jamie A. Brownlow, Monroe, Wash., Janice Durst, Mantorville, Minn., David Brownlow, Glendale, Ariz., Richard Brownlow, Denver, Colo., and Maxine McGhan, Box Elder; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Ann V. Bruce

SPEARFISH — Ann V. Bruce, 94, Spearfish and formerly of Hot Springs, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include three sons, Gerald Bruce, Spearfish, Robert Bruce, Madison, Minn., Arthur Bruce, Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A Christian Wake service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hot Springs. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, at the church, with the Rev. Peter Kovarik as celebrant. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.

Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Launer

CHADRON, Neb. - Donald Launer, 85, Chadron, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Hot Springs Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He served in the Army Air Force as an airplane mechanic in England, North Africa and Italy in World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta Launer, Chadron; three sons, Curt Launer, Everett, Wash., Clint Launer and Bruce Launer, both of Chadron; one daughter, Donetta Schroeder, Everett; one brother, Jerry Launer, Sun City, Ariz.; one sister, Elayne Bloom, Somis, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with the Rev. Moe Griener officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.

Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis is in charge of arrangements.

Carol Bradley

BELLE FOURCHE - Carol Bradley, 61, rural Belle Fourche, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Leslie Bradley Sr., Belle Fourche; three sons, Leslie Bradley Jr., Lead, Tony Bradley, Deadwood, and Daniel Bradley, Belle Fourche; three brothers, Robert Schallenkamp and Larry Schallenkamp, both of Deadwood, and Fred Schallenkamp, Ontario, Calif.; one sister, Kay Gibbons, Bellingham, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.
