Judy R. Vidal

RAPID CITY - Judy R. Vidal, 76, Rapid City, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at the home of her stepdaughter.

She was born May 11, 1925, in Amherst, Ohio, to Harry and Esther (Plato) Ruth.

She was married to Paul Molitor in 1960 in California. Following the death of her husband, she met Henri C. Vidal. They moved to the Black Hills and were married in 1976. The couple resided at the Johnson Siding area since their return to the Hills.

Survivors include stepchildren, Mike, Pat and Cheryl Vidal, all of Rapid City, Chyree Hamiel, Reliance, and Nancy Hawks, Santa Barbara, Calif.; a sister, Virginia Schauss, Lorain, Ohio; and several step-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John Ruth; husbands, Paul Molitor and Hank Vidal; and her stepmother, Anne Ruth.

The family wishes to thank the many friends, extended family and medical personnel who have touched her life and helped her through her illness.

At her request, she was cremated, and graveside services and inurnment will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 25, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Hospice of the Black Hills and the Humane Society of the Black Hills.

Arrangements are with the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Earl B. 'Andy' Anderson

RAPID CITY - Earl B. "Andy" Anderson, 68, of Rapid City, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Fort Meade.

Andy was born June 24, 1933, in Spring Branch, South Carolina, the son of Leo and Inez (Harris) Anderson. He joined the Air Force in 1952 and was stationed at Lackland AFB in Texas. Andy was then stationed at Rushmore AFB in Rapid City. In 1953 he married Kay Jean Newton. He was at Rushmore AFB until 1956, when he spent a tour of duty in Korea, two tours in the Philippines and a tour in Vietnam. He retired from the Air Force in 1972 at Charleston AFB in South Carolina. Andy returned to Rapid City and worked for Boeing, was a policeman for a while and retired from the Rapid City School District.

He is survived by his wife, Kay, his son, Randall (Dana), his daughter, Paula Krueger (Butch), and three granddaughters, Shannon and Krista O'Neal and Amy Anderson; two sisters, Thelma Turner, Conway, S.C., and Ruth Coda (Billy), Clovis, N.M.; three brothers-in-law, Billy (Lillian), Gary (Mary) and Donnie (Jeannie) Newton; his mother-in-law, Inez Newton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 26, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City, with Chaplain Moe Greiner officiating. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Laura Pilloud

SPEARFISH - Laura Pilloud, 87, Spearfish and formerly of Belle Fourche, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.

Survivors include three daughters, Genevieve Aberle, Fort Collins, Colo., Caren Nelson, Maui, Hawaii, and Sonia Ainsworth, Spearfish; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Leona Bouchey, Washington; and three brothers, Ray Brost, Belle Fourche, and Walter Brost and Earl Brost, both of Washington.

Arrangements are pending with Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel of Belle Fourche.

Orlyn Lee Luckhurst

PIEDMONT - Orlyn Lee Luckhurst, 63, Piedmont, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Luckhurst, Piedmont; three sons, Bruce Luckhurst, Watertown, Scott Luckhurst, Rapid City, and Mark Luckhurst, Huron; one daughter, Susan Luckhurst, Chadsworth, Calif.; two brothers, Marlo Luckhurst, Watertown, and Romaine Luckhurst, Pierre; one sister, Baverly Jones, Ortonville, Mass.; and six grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Sturgis.

James Leslie Hoffman Jr.

WHITEWOOD - James Leslie Hoffman Jr., 58, Whitewood, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie Hoffman, Whitewood; his father, James Hoffman Sr., Deadwood; one son, Eric Hoffman, Whitewood; one daughter, Tonya Chapweske, Miles City, Mont.; one sister, Synva Chrysler, Cheshire, Conn.; and one granddaughter.

He served in the U.S. Army from March 9, 1965, to Feb. 24, 1967.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and for one hour before services Friday, March 22, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. David Baer officiating.

Burial will follow at Whitewood Cemetery.

Eric Brian Manus

PIPESTONE, Minn. - Eric Brian Manus, 27, Pipestone, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Pipestone County Medical Center.

Survivors include his parents, Louis and Pauline Manus, Rapid City; his sister, Tanya Manus, Rapid City; his maternal grandmother, Helen Prather, Poulsbo, Wash.; and his paternal grandparents, Louis and Frances Manus, Marysville, Wash.

Visitation is from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Hartquist Funeral Chapel in Pipestone.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 22, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Pipestone. Burial will be at New Woodlawn Cemetery in Pipestone.

Herb Claseman

BILLINGS, Mont. - Herb Claseman, 89, Billings and formerly of Scenic, S.D., died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, in Billings.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Claseman, Billings; one brother, Don Claseman, Clinton, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews, including Jay Morey, Belle Fourche, S.D., and Karen Busch, Rapid City.

Services were held Saturday, March 16, in Billings.

James B. 'Jim' McGinnis

FAITH - James B. "Jim" McGinnis, 88, Faith, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Sturgis Community Health Care Center.

Survivors include three sons, James McGinnis, Prescott, Ariz., and Richard McGinnis and Alan McGinnis, both of Faith; two daughters, Renay Plummer, Phoenix, and Charlotte Green, Aberdeen; one brother, Norman McGinnis, California; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His wife, Lorraine, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 22, with a 7 p.m. time of remembrance with the family, and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 23, at Faith Area Memorial Chapel.

Visitation will continue for one hour before services, which will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Faith Community Legion Hall, with Calvin Chapman and the Rev. Larry Wilson officiating.

Burial will be at Faith Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Hilda Rathke

PIERRE - Hilda Rathke, 82, Pierre, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Beverly Health Care in Pierre.

Survivors include her husband, John Rathke, Pierre; three daughters, Priscilla Olson, Rapid City, Shirley Becker, Pierre, and Donna Fischer, Mobridge; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 22, at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Pierre.

Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre.

Kathyleen V. Jeffery

SPEARFISH - Kathyleen V. Jeffery, long-time Spearfish Valley resident, 83, died March 18, 2002, at Lookout Memorial Hospital, Spearfish.

Visitation will be held Thursday, March 21, 2002, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2002, at the United Methodist Church, Spearfish, with Rev. Kip Roozen officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Spearfish United Methodist Church, VFW Women's Auxiliary, Lower Valley Extension Club, and Spearfish Volunteer Fire Department.

Kathyleen was born July 4, 1918, in Spearfish, to Nels and Katie (Evers) Andersen. She was raised and attended school in Spearfish, graduating from Spearfish High School.

On August 30, 1936, Kathyleen married Albert Jeffery in Spearfish. The couple lived north of Spearfish on the family farm. They worked side by side for over 63 years farming and ranching.

Kathyleen enjoyed cooking and baking and she made many beautiful wedding cakes. She was always there when her family, friends, and neighbors needed a helping hand.

Kathyleen was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church. She was also a 60-year member of the Lower Valley Extension Club, she was an active member of VFW Post No. 5860 Ladies Auxiliary, and was an honorary member of the Spearfish Volunteer Fire Department.

Grateful for having shared in Kathyleen's life are one son, Jerry Jeffery, Spearfish; three brothers, Junior (and Bette) Andersen, Spearfish, Dr. Roger (and Charlotte) Andersen, Centennial, Colo., and Nels (and Margaret) Andersen, Rapid City; several nieces and nephews; and special friend Gladys Nicholas, Spearfish.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Albert, one infant daughter, five sisters and three brothers.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish.

Harold D. Bentsen

RAPID CITY - Harold D. Bentsen, 94, of Rapid City, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Wesleyan Health Care Center.

He was born Oct. 10, 1907, to Niels and Christina (Anderson) Bentsen in Kenmare, N.D. The family later moved to the Danish community of Brorson, north of Sidney, Mont. Later he farmed with his brothers until 1929. He met Goldie Bender, who was a schoolteacher in Brorson, and they were married in May of 1929 in Long Beach, Calif. The couple returned to Brorson, where they continued to farm until 1936. At this time they moved to Long Beach, where Harold worked for Douglas Aircraft until 1942. Farming was still Harold's first love, so once again, he, Goldie, and their two children, Rodell and Carolyn, moved back to Sidney, where he farmed until 1983. He and Goldie moved to Sun City, Arizona, living there until his wife Goldie passed away in 1995. Harold then moved to Rapid City, living with his daughter and son-in-law.

Harold was a longtime member of Pella Lutheran Church in Sidney and the American Lutheran Church in Sun City. His love was for his family, and he had a strong faith in his Lord. He enjoyed working in his shop and visiting with his grandchildren and friends. He has a special friend, Jerry Wilson, from the senior companion program. He loved his pet poodle, Katie.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Carolyn "Kelly" Donohoe, and son-in-law, Gordon, of Rapid City; four grandchildren, Jamie Piearson, Mike Donohoe and his wife Laurie, Cindy Byre and her husband Scott, and Michelle Donohoe; and seven great-grandchildren, Matt, Amy, Kaitlin, Patrick, Connor, Zachary and Kellien.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Goldie; three brothers; one sister; and a son, Rodell, in August of 1997.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, with Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiating.

Inurnment will be at a later date in the American Lutheran Church Cemetery in Sun City, Ariz.

A memorial has been established to the Senior Companion Program of the Black Hills.

Diane M. Bean Kuper

CUSTER - Diane M. Bean Kuper, 49, Custer, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Randy Kuper, Custer; her parents, John and Dorothy Patton, Custer; one son, Billy Bean Jr., Cresco, Iowa; three daughters, Debra Mashek, Lawler, Iowa, Trisha Bean, Alpha, Iowa, and Kelly Martinez, Custer; two stepdaughters, Comfort Doe, Minnesota, and Corrina Webb, Arkansas; and seven grandchildren.

A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, March 22, at St. John's Catholic Church in Custer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at the church, with the Rev. Peter Kovarik officiating.

Burial will be Wednesday, March 27, at St. Mary's Cemetery in Waucoma, Iowa.

Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Custer is in charge of arrangements.

Romayne Opoien

CUSTER - Romayne Opoien, 77, Custer and formerly of Dell Rapids, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Custer Community Hospital.

Visitation will be today at Kahler Funeral Home in Dell Rapids, with the family present at 7 p.m.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Lutheran Church in Dell Rapids.

Burial will be at West Nidaros Cemetery near Baltic.

Paul R. Rollins

RAPID CITY - Paul R. Rollins, 85, Rapid City, died at the Westhills Village Health Care Center Tuesday, March 19, 2002.

He was born Oct. 25, 1916, at Draper, S.D., the son of Ralph E. and Rachael (Moon) Rollins. He grew up at Draper and graduated from Draper High School. Paul received his BA degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1940 and his Master's degree from the University of Nebraska in 1941. He married Esther Blessing on Nov. 26, 1941, at Dallas, S.D. The couple resided at Bellwood, Neb., for a period of two years. He taught school at Bellwood. In 1943 they moved to Flandreau, where Paul taught high school history for a period of 14 years. During the summer months he was employed at the grain elevator in Draper, S.D. The family moved to Rapid City in 1959 and from 1959 until 1979 he was the principal at Annie Tallent Elementary School. Paul was active at the First United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school, was a member of the Men's Club and served on the Administrative Board. He was a longtime supporter of the Rapid City Boys Club and was given several recognition awards by the Boys Club. He was a Life member of the S.D. Education Assn. He received the Principal of the Year Award and the Dakota Wesleyan University Distinguished Service to College and State Award in 1975. In 1982, Paul and his wife Esther started the Rapid City Parkinson's Support Group in Rapid City, and they were active in the group for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Roger Rollins and his wife Barb, Aiken, S.C., and Dale Rollins, Nigeria, Africa; two daughters, Annette Ransom and her husband Jeff, Princeton Junction, New Jersey, and Beth Merkel and her husband Gary, Hot Springs; a brother, Gordon Rollins, Mitchell, S.D.; a sister, Doris Frederickson, Pierre, S.D.; seven grandchildren, Keri and Kim, Sara, Rachel and David, Travis and Mirra; and a great-granddaughter, Teri Lynn. He was preceded in death by his wife Esther in October of 2001.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Doug Diehl officiating. Interment will be at the Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Dakota Wesleyan

University and the First United Methodist Church.
