Albin Herman 'Swede' Olson

ONIDA - Albin Herman "Swede" Olson, 82, Onida, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare in Pierre.

Survivors include one daughter, Patty McGee, Onida; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ella Brehe, Pierre, and Anna Mae Weischedel, Agar; and one brother, Royal Olson, Agar.

His wife, Irene C. Rogers Olson, preceded him in death.

He served in the U.S. Army from April 8, 1942, to Jan. 12, 1946.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Onida.

Burial will follow at Onida Cemetery.

Patricia A. Olic

PHOENIX - Patricia A. Olic, 71, Phoenix and formerly of Rapid City, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix.

Survivors include three sisters, Marie Tedrow, Murdo, Helen Miller, New Underwood, and Bessie Konvalinka, Czechoslovakia, and two brothers, Frank Olic and Tony Olic, both of New Underwood.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Helen M. Gambs

RAPID CITY - Helen M. Gambs, 87, Rapid City, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Westhills Village Health Care in Rapid City.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Rhoades, Rapid City, and Susan Gasele, Duluth, Minn.; one sister, Irva Justice, Fort Worth, Texas; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Andrea Lynn Davis

RAPID CITY - Andrea Lynn Davis, 50, Rapid City, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at a Rapid City nursing home.

Survivors include her special friend, Robert Hanel, Rapid City; two sons, Jeremy Davis, Rapid City, and Eric Davis, Vermillion; two daughters, Abbey Davis and Becca Davis, both of Rapid City; her parents, John and Marnie Cherven, Mountain Home, Ark.; two sisters, Yvonne Pepperman, Roscommon, Ark., and Jacqui Ponkey, Traverse City, Mich.; two brothers, Dale Cherven, Roscommon, and Mark Cherven, Mountain Home; and one grandson.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. David Cameron and the Rev. Ann Barton officiating.

Private burial will be at a later date.

Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

Vernes Turnbull

CUSTER - Vernes Turnbull, 91, Custer and formerly of Hot Springs, died Saturday,

March 16, 2002, at Custer Community Hospital.

Survivors include one brother, James Calagan, Worthington, Minn., and one sister, Inez Peschel, Stillwater, Minn.

A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hot Springs.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 21, at the church, with the Rev. John Heying officiating.

Inurnment will be at a later date.

Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs is in charge of arrangements.

Robert A. Barclay

PHILIP - Robert A. Barclay, 86, Philip, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Kadoka Care Center.

Survivors include three daughters, Roberta Bandi and Marline Gerlach, both of Philip, and Sandra Petrovich, Virginia Beach, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Elizabeth Holbert, Marie Oliver and Mary Westerwick, all of Pittsburgh.

His wife, Margot Barclay, preceded him in death.

Services and burial will be at a later date at Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh.

Rush Funeral Home of Philip is in charge of arrangements.

Timothy Dale Grause

BISMARCK, N.D. - Timothy Dale Grause, 48, of Bismarck, died March 15, 2002, in a Sioux Falls, S.D., hospital. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Rimrock Evangelical Free Church, Rapid City, S.D.

Timothy was born on July 26, 1953, the son of Paul and Ann (Arnett) Grause, in Sgt. Bluff, Iowa. He played football and graduated from Sgt. Bluff High School in 1972. He then attended Western Iowa Tech, graduating in 1973. Tim started working as a hired hand at the age of 13 on Bob Rogers' farm. He met Connie Tschetter in 1970 and they were married in November of 1973. Tim worked for Dick Morgan Appliance Shop and Monroe Welding. In 1978 he worked for the U.S. Gov't GSA in Casper, Wyo., transferred to Pierre, S.D., in 1987 and then to Rapid City, S.D., in 1990. In January of 1999 he transferred to Bismarck to become a N.D. Automotive Inspector. He was a member of Rimrock Evangelical Free Church of Rapid City and was currently attending First Evangelical Free Church of Bismarck. He assisted with running the sound system in both churches. He also coached for his son's soccer teams in Rapid City and Bismarck. He loved camping, John Wayne movies, motorcycles, auto maintenance, CB radios and horses.

He is survived by his wife, Connie, and four children, Christopher John "C.J." and wife, Heather, of Rapid City, S.D., Becky of Bismarck, Kristina of Spearfish, S.D., and James of Bismarck; two grandsons, Donovan and Damien; his parents, Paul and Ann Grause of Sioux City, Iowa; two brothers, David and Cindy of Sioux City, Iowa, and James Grause of Plano, Texas; and four sisters, Teresa Grause of Sioux City, Iowa, Linda and Mike Olsen of Sioux City, Iowa, Marsha and Paul Drieman of Wright City, Mo., and Vicky Grause of Sioux City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ellie and Agnes Arnett; paternal grandparents, Oscar and Martha (Grause) Smith; and several aunts and uncles.

Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association (315 N. 4th St., Grand Forks, ND 58203) or the American Cancer Society (523 E. Bismarck Expressway, Bismarck, ND 58504).

Winnie L. Smith

RAPID CITY - Winnie L. Smith, 95, Rapid City, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Wesleyan Health Care Center.

She was born on May 5, 1906, to Hudson Horsley and Lela (Hill) Horsley in Wessington Springs, S.D. She was raised in Jones County and graduated from Murdo High School in 1924. She attended college at Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, S.D., for two years.

She married Chester W. Smith on March 31, 1929, in Alexandria, S.D.

She taught in Jones County, was a Red Cross Nurse's Aide during World War II in Huron, S.D., until 1947 when she moved to Mitchell, where she studied and was one of the first LPN's in the state of S.D. to get a license in Mitchell. She moved to Rapid City, S.D., in 1950 and nursed at B.H. General, Ellsworth AFB, and then moved back to Mitchell in 1960. She returned to Rapid City in 1980 and has lived here since.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Mitchell and Rapid City, S.D. She enjoyed crafts, such as needlepoint and embroidery. She also enjoyed her grandchildren very much.

She is survived by two daughters, Kay Phelps of Rapid City, S.D., and Veo (Milo) Jacob of Ft. Pierre, S.D.; a very special friend, Weldon Welch; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chester; five brothers; and five sisters.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 19, 2002, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary, with Pastor Dale Bartscher officiating.

Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for First Christian Church Elderly and Shut-In Fund.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Esther H. Petersen

SPEARFISH - Esther H. Petersen, 80, Spearfish, S.D., died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with Rev. Gene Bauman officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish and one hour prior to the service at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche, S.D.

Esther Helen Sipila was born on April 30, 1921, at Nisland, S.D., the daughter of Vaino and Fannie (Jarvila) Sipila. She was raised on a ranch east of Belle Fourche, S.D., and attended grade school in Arpan. She attended three years of high school at Nisland, S.D., and graduated from Belle Fourche High School. She then attended Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, receiving her two-year teaching certificate. She was the Swarm Day Queen in 1939. She taught school in Arpan for two years. On May 26, 1942, Esther married Lloyd L. Petersen at Iowa City, Iowa. She taught elementary school in Custer, S.D., from 1946-1951. She also taught school in Puerto Rico from 1953-1956 when Lloyd was stationed there. They traveled various places in the states when Lloyd was recalled to the service. She also taught school in California and Florida. Esther enjoyed sewing and made many of her own clothes.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Spearfish. A memorial has been established by the family to the Alzheimer's Association.

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd L. Petersen of Spearfish, S.D., and one son, Donald L. Petersen of Garland, Texas, and several nieces and nephews.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Segrid and Lola; and two brothers, Harold and George Sipila.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish.

Melvin J. Barney

NEWCASTLE, Wyo. - Melvin J. Barney, 40, Newcastle, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, en route to Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his mother, Ione Barney, Amery, Wis.; two brothers, Charlie Barney, Clear Lake, Wis., and Jim Barney, Amery; and one sister, Kathy Nelson, Amery.

Services will be Thursday, March 21, in Wisconsin.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Worden Funeral Home in Newcastle, followed by a reception at Old Mill Inn, Newcastle.

Cards may be sent to Ione Barney, Golden Age Manor, 220 Schott Court, Amery, WI 54001.

Arthur E. Mischke

RAPID CITY - Arthur E. Mischke, 75, of Rapid City, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Sturgis Community Healthcare Center.

He was born April 18, 1926, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Albert and Dora Mischke. Boyhood life was spent on the family farm in Opdahl Township, Hamlin County, S.D. He attended South Dakota State in Brookings on a 4-H scholarship. He was baptized, confirmed and married in Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grover, S.D.

He farmed on the family farm for 10 years and was County Assessor in Hamlin County for two years, and in Meade County for four years. Arthur started employment with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1961 on the Missile Sites in Rapid City, S.D. He transferred to the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver, Colo., in 1966, Bismarck, N.D., in 1972, Huron, S.D., in 1972, and back to Denver in 1974. He was reassigned to Billings in 1986. He then transferred back to the Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1988 as Chief of the Real Estate Division. He retired in 1994 and moved to Rapid City, S.D.

He was active in the community and was past president of Sturgis Jaycees, the South Dakota Assessor's Association and the Green Mountain Optimist Club in Lakewood, Colo. He served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Denver Credit Union. He was a past Distinguished Lt. Governor of the Wyoming and Colorado Optimist District.

He is survived by his wife, Monica L.; six daughters; one son; and 13 grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2002, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. David Maertz officiating.

Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth E. Call

RAPID CITY - Ruth E. Call, 73, of Rapid City, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at a local nursing home.

She was born April 5, 1928, in Denver, Missouri, to Fred and Goldie (Sowards) Hill. She graduated from Rapid City High School. She worked for Ewing and Forrette Architects in Rapid City. Ruth married Everett Call on May 13, 1949, in Rapid City, where she had resided since.

Ruth devoted her life to raising her three children and later became a local realtor.

She is survived by her husband, Everett; daughter, Vicki Krugman and her husband Jim of Lakewood, Colo.; son, William Dana Call and his wife Vicki of St. Charles, Mo.; brother, Robert Hill of Rapid City; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; one sister; and a daughter, Karen Call.

Services will be Wednesday, March 20, at 1 p.m. at Kirk Funeral Home, with Rev. Arthur Johns officiating.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kirk Funeral Home.

Burial will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Pearl E. Peterson

UNION CENTER - Pearl E. Peterson, 94, Union Center, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include one son, Jim Peterson, Union Center; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mary Crown, Corona, Calif., and Artie Kitterman and Orrey King, both of Benson, Ariz.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, and for one hour before services Thursday, March 21, at Central Meade County Community Center in Union Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the community center, with the Rev. Harold Delbridge officiating.

Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Quinn Cemetery.
